Method for the electrophoretic deposition of coatings from a bath The invention relates to a method for the electrophoretic deposition of coatings from a bath.
In the known electrophoretic deposition of resins, plastics, oils, metals, minerals and the like on objects to be coated, these substances are finely dispersed in a liquid medium to form the disperse phase. The medium forms the dispersion medium. The dispersion of disperse phase and Dispers.ionsmittel is given as a bath liquid in an electrolytic cell. Two electrodes are immersed in the cell.
If a direct voltage is applied to the electrodes, the disperse phase is deposited on the cathode or anode, depending on its charge with respect to the dispersant. If you now make an object to be coated for the deposition-receiving electrode, the substances mentioned at the beginning can be deposited on the object in this way.
In this deposition process, the material required for deposition is accumulated in front of the deposition electrode and only deposited in a certain coagulated state (agglutination and electrocoagulation). This coagulation process has the consequence that the deposited coating is not uniform and that local field and current concentrations arise on the deposition electrode. These current concentrations can trigger undesired electrolytic processes on the separation electrode, which can occur even without local current concentrations in the case of unfavorable potential positions.
Such processes can lead to further disturbances of the deposited coating through the development of gases and the dissolution of electrode material. All of these processes disrupt the formation of the deposition layer and lead to holes in the film-like layer, to discoloration and to corrugated, uneven layer surfaces.
It is known that one tries to suppress these errors by temporarily reversing the polarity of the direct voltage applied to the electrodes, thereby depolarizing the electrodes. Even if these measures have brought a certain improvement, very often they are unable to destroy the coagulates and, in addition, various defects can adhere to them, such as B.
Onset of counter-electrolysis processes, the formation of layers on the counter-electrode to the object, which then detach when the polarity is reversed and disturb the homogeneity of the bath. In addition, the time and magnitude of the polarity reversed direct current directly represent a loss of electrical energy, which is all the more disadvantageous as it has been shown in the course of development that reversing the polarity of the direct current in the usual sense with amplitudes symmetrical to the zero line occurs directly can have an unfavorable effect, especially when the cathode processes caused by polarity reversal are subject to low overvoltages.
Gas developments and unsteady surfaces have recently appeared. In addition, the polarity reversal of high direct currents places high demands on the switching devices and thus makes the system more expensive.
The present invention aims to eliminate the disadvantages mentioned. It has been shown that you get much better results if you start with alternating current instead of using direct current. If one considers that the materials mentioned at the beginning are accumulated in front of the deposition electrode during the deposition process, where agglutinates (i.e. loose packings) and agglomerates (i.e. denser packings) form, so-called.
Electro-coagulates and thereby disturb the uniform, beautiful deposition, it is understandable that the formation of a better, finer and denser layer can be brought about by destroying the accumulation structure again by alternating field vibrations or ultrasonic vibrations. Their frequency is to be chosen so that the structures are maximally shaken, ie. H. absorb a maximum of vibration energy.
These frequencies are known as so-called relaxation frequencies, which were first demonstrated by Debye in the molecularly disperse systems and then by Oesterle in the coarsely disperse systems of lacquers and enamels.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the electrophoresis is carried out in an electrical field which changes periodically over time and whose mean field strength value is not equal to zero. The frequency preferably corresponds at least approximately to the relaxation frequency of the molecular associates of the substance to be deposited. The following information is exemplary. The particle agglomerations are broken up by vibrations and deposited in a new state of order. These vibrations can be caused by mechanical forces, e.g. B.
Ultrasound, or by electromechanical forces, e.g. B. alternating electric fields.
Depending on the substance, very specific frequencies can be determined at which the separations are most beautiful. These frequencies can be determined empirically on the bath itself or determined using the dielectrographic method given by Oesterle in 1962.
Once you have found the appropriate frequency, you need, if you z. B. works with alternating current to only give it a polarization asymmetry in order to allow the fine separation of the fine debris of the destroyed agglomerates and agglutinates to be perfect.
The polarization asymmetry of the alternating current can be imparted to the alternating current in a known manner by superimposing direct current or by transductive transformation.
Depending on the properties of the particles to be separated, the alternating current with a small part of its amplitude can fall into the oppositely polarized area with a view to optimum separation, or a wave component of the alternating current can coincide with the potential zero line or the alternating current falls, as a further possibility with no wave component in the oppositely polarized area.
Actual switching processes are not necessary here, and there is also the additional advantage that the counter-electrophoretic, uneconomical current component can be completely eliminated or reduced to a vanishing minimum that is far from the amplitudes of a reversed direct current.
A numerical example is intended to explain the substance-dependent relationships in more detail.

The separation of an effective alternating field can also be generated by generating the alternating field by means of an additional auxiliary electrode which is in direct contact with the bath and which is connected to a corresponding alternating voltage.
However, this circuit is bound to proportionally equal proportions of direct and alternating voltage, otherwise electrophoretic or electrolytic side effects are obtained between the non-deposition electrode and the auxiliary electrode.
It is therefore also interesting to generate the electrical vibrations using a high-voltage field that is applied to the electrophoresis bath. For this purpose, an insulated high-voltage electrode is introduced into the electrophoresis bath, which is connected as an additional counter-electrode to the separation electrode.
The field emanating from the high-voltage electrode is now inhomogeneous in that the electric field strengths are inversely related to the dielectric constants of the high-voltage electrode insulation and the various bath zones. Depending on the concentration of particles in the deposition material in front of and on the deposition electrode, the field strengths are increased in these zones.
If these field strengths are now allowed to vary, it is thus possible to bring about electromechanical alternating forces, the triggering field strength of which increases automatically as the electrocoagulation increases.
