Z' kann also Methyl, ¯thyl, Isopropyl, tert.
Dia Äthylenglykolmonoäther erhält man z.
Vorzugsweise verwendet man Athylpolysilikat.
(Literatur : Ravlin and Thomas, J. Poly. Sci., 10, 291 (1953) und Greensmith and Thomas, J. Poly. Sci., 18, 189 (1955).

Thermosetting mixture
The present invention relates to a thermosetting composition and its use for the production of vulcanized silicone rubber.
Various types of silicone rubber are on the market today. They are made from organosiloxane polymars or copolymers. by adding fillers and catalytic hardening. However, these products show a relatively poor tear resistance. Despite their good heat resistance. they are therefore not usable at high levels of tear stress; so z. B. not for aircraft tires.
So far, two difficulties have arisen in the peroxide vulcanization of silicone rubber.
First, the interior of massive pieces (e.g. of
2.5 cm diameter) difficult to vulcanize, d. H. inside, the strength is worse than on the surface. Sometimes the inside of the material remains completely unvulcanized. There is a theory that this condition is mainly due to the chemical action of the decomposition products of the peroxide.
Secondly, when peroxide is used in the vulcanization of silicone rubber in the presence of oxygen, so-called inhibition occurs. If, for example, vulcanization is carried out in a convection oven at 150 C, the material is only hardened inside, but not at all on the surface.
It is therefore the aim of the invention to provide silicone rubber with improved tear strength and high tensile strength which are uniformly vulcanized on the inside.
The thermosetting mixture which is the subject of the present invention is characterized in that it contains the following components:
1. Organosilicon polymers, (a) built up from siloxane units, in which the organic groups are monovalent, optionally halogenated hydrocarbon radicals with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or (b) polymers with building blocks of the formula
EMI1.1
in which X is a divalent one, optionally with oxygen in the form of the group
EMI1.2
uninterrupted hydrocarbon radical Y means a monovalent hydrocarbon radical with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, the component (l)
has at least two silicon OH groups per molecule and, based on the total amount of (1), on average 1.95 to 2.05 monovalent silicon organic radicals per silicon atom, and component (l) has an average of at least 400 Si atoms per molecule .
2. At least 10% by weight, based on. on the amount of component (1), finely divided hydrophobic solid particles of a polymeric, silicon-containing filler with 50 to 100 mol% SiO2 units, with a surface area of at least 100 m2 / g, in which organosilyl units of the formula
EMI1.3
oderR'zR "Si- in which R 'is an alkyl radical with less than 6 carbon atoms or the phenyl radical and R" is an alkyl radical with less than 6 carbon atoms, d?, r is 3, 3, 3-trifluoropropyl radical or the phenyl radical , with Si atoms in the filler surface over the oxygen atoms in such a.
Quantity are connected so that the molar ratio of the organosilyl units to the sum of the organosilyl units and SiO2 is not higher than 0.6;
3. At least 0.1% by weight of cyanguanidine, based on the amount of belt part (1).
Such mixtures are preferably cured or vulcanized at 160-200 C for 10-15 minutes.
The term raw rubber or "thermosetting mixture" is understood to mean the uncured mixture.
The organosilicon polymers used must contain at least 2 silicon OH groups per molecule; these hydroxyls can be bonded to central or terminal Si atoms of the polymer; they are preferably terminal. The polymers must also have at least 400 Si atoms per molecule. They can be either liquids or viscous benzene soluble gums. The choice of polymer for its physical properties is determined by the intended use of the finished elastomer; liquid polymers e.g. B. serve for painting or putty purposes. Are against it. If highly tear-resistant materials are desired, high-molecular, non-flowing rubbers are used.
They must also contain on average 1.95 to 2.05 monovalent organic radicals per Si atom based on their total amount, and they can also contain a relatively small amount of mono- and triorganosilyl radicals, the latter having a degree of substitution of 1.95-2 .05 practically does not affect.
The silicon-attached organic radicals of the polymers composed of siloxane units, e.g. B. are alkyl radicals such as methyl, ethyl, tert. Butyl and octadecyl; Alkenyl groups such as vinyl, allyl and butadienyl; Cycloalkyl groups such as cyolobutyl, cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl; Cycloalkenyl groups such as cyclopentyl and cyclohsxenyl; Aryl groups such as phenyl and xenyl; Aralkyl groups such as benzyl and xylyl and alkaryl groups such as tolyl, which are optionally halogen-substituted such as chloromethyl, bromophenyl, trifluorotolyl, CF3CH2CH2 and C3F6CH2CH2. These polysiloxanes are known compounds.
They can be homopolymer; H. have similar building blocks or be copolymer, d. H. have different building blocks. Finally, a mixture of homo- and / or copolymers can be present. The siloxanes can contain one or different silicon organic radicals. For example, homopolymers such as phenylmethylpolysiloxane with terminal hydroxyls are suitable, but it is preferable to use organopolysiloxanes which contain at least 75 mol-11/0 (CH3) 2SiO groups, the remainder from groups n (C6H3) 2SiO "(F3CCH2CH2) (CH3) SiO, (CH3) 2 (CH2 = CH) SiO and (C6H5) (CH3) SiO.
You can use the hydroxyl-containing siloxanes u. a. Prepare as follows: Cyclic siloxanes are heated with steam under pressure and the alkoxysilams are subjected to careful hydrolysis in a neutral medium; or the corresponding chlorosilanes are produced and the chlorine is then hydrolyzed.
The organosilicon polymers alternatively consist of building blocks of the formula

where X is a divalent interrupted hydrocarbon radical and Y is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms. Examples of the latter are given in the description of the polysiloxanes. As mentioned, n 1.95-2.05 monovalent organic radicals (here Y) must be bonded per Si atom.
Examples of X are methylene, ethylene, p-phenylene, 4,4'-diphenylene, p-xylylene, 4,4'-diphenylene ether and 4,4'-dimethylenediphenyl ether. As Hcmopolymers, the polymers can only consist of the above components or! he represent block copolymers from both types of polymer. Silarylene-siloxane block copolymers are the subject of Swiss Patent No. 436 731. These are elastomers with unusually high tensile strength.
The surface of the filler must be at least 100 m2 / g, measured according to the nitrogen absorption method ASTM Special Technical Bulletin No. 51, page 95 ff (1941), in particular in order to obtain a satisfactory elastomer. Fillers with 300 to 400 m2 / g are preferably used. The surface does not have a critical maximum, but can be 900 m / g and more.
Suitable raw fillers include silica gels made from vaporous calcium compounds, airgel, hydrogels, organogels and xerogels of silica.
The raw materials. can only consist of SiOg components but consist of 100-50 mol% SiO2 plus 0-50 Molto RSiO1,3 components. be constructed, where R is an alkyl with fewer than 6 carbon atoms or phenyl; d. H. R can be methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl or pentyl.
If RSiO1,3 residues are present, they are usually referred to as cogels. Their production is known.
The organosilyl pests are linked to silicon atoms on the substrate surface via oxygen. You are either
EMI2.3
or R'2R "Si radicals R 'is alkyl with less than 6 carbon atoms or phenyl, and R" is alkyl with fewer than 6 carbon atoms, phenyl or -CH2-CH2-CF3. The silicon-containing filler can have diorganosilyl, tricganosilyl groups or mixtures thereof with a limited proportion of mono-organosilyl radicals. The organosilyl radical also has a 3, 3, 3-trifluoropropyl group per Si atom. Examples are: dimethylsilyl, trimethylsilyl, dimethylphenylsilyl. 3, 3-trifluoropropyldimethylsilyl, dimethylbutylsilyl and triethylsilyl.
The molar ratio of organosilyl to total SiO2 plus organosilyl is at most 0.6/1. It is best when the surface of the substrate is saturated with organosilyl building blocks while maintaining this molar ratio, i. H. when all reactive sites (mostly SiOH groups) on the substrate surface are occupied by organosilyl residues. The amount of organosilyl groups required for this depends on the nature of the filler, its surface and pretreatment, etc.
For the production of finely divided silica one burns z. B. a volatile silane and treats the silica obtained with a reactive organosilicon compound to achieve the surface saturation mentioned. There are u. a. Chlorosilane, silanols or alkoxysilanes.
Another method is to convert a SiO2 hydrogel or organogel with organosilicones. In detail, a silica gel is precipitated from an alkali silicate and treated with one of the above organosilicon compounds. If you use a siloxane, you have to work under acidic conditions for complete conversion.
In a third process, an SiO2 hydrogel or a hydrogel-airgel mixture is treated with isopropanol and a siloxane until the water in the gel is replaced by the siloxane. Then remove the excess of alcohol and siloxane.
To obtain a satisfactory elastomer, at least 10 parts by weight of filler must be used per 100 parts of organosilicon polymer; Depending on the filler, preferably 30-100 parts of the same. The filling power depends u. a. on the particle size and the degree of agglomeration of the filler. The amount of filler also depends on the type of polymer. Polymer viscosity and amount of filler are usually inversely proportional to each other. If necessary, small amounts of a joining additive, such as diatomaceous earth, with less than 100 m2 / g can be added to the filler.
At least 0.1, preferably 0.25-1.0% by weight of cyanguanidine (dicyandiamide), based on the weight of the polymer, is added as the hardening agent.
According to Table II, Example 11 below, an excellent elastomer is obtained if 0.01-2.0% by weight of organic peroxide is added in combination with cyanguanidine. Even the small amount of 0.01-0.2% by weight of peroxide in certain types of raw rubber in combination with cyanguanidine provides a higher tensile strength than the two hardening agents would give on their own. Suitable peroxides are: tert-butyl perbenzoate, benzoyl peroxide, dicumyl peroxide, bis (2,4-dichlorobenzoyl) peroxide and 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di-t-butylperoxydhexane.
Preferably, 0.3-0.06 parts of the mentioned peroxides are used. Cyanguanidine alone also gives excellent results.
You can also add 0.1-50.0% by weight of the following silicates to the mixture: Orthosilicates with monovalent alkyl radicals with less than 7 carbon atoms, e.g. B.
Methyl orthosilicate, ¯thyl orthosilicate, n-propyl orthosilicate, pentsnyl orthosilicate, hexyl orthosilicate and diethyl dipropyl orthosilicate.
Examples of partial hydrolysates of such orthosilicates are polysilicates such as methyl polysilicate, ethyl polysilicate, isopropyl polysilicate and n-butyl polysilicate.
This class includes compounds of the formula Z4mSi (OCH2CH2OZ ') m, where Z is a monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with fewer than 7 carbon atoms, and Z' is a monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with fewer than 6 carbon atoms and m is 3 or 4. Z 'can therefore be methyl, ¯thyl, isopropyl, tert.
Butyl, pentyl, vinyl, allyl, methallyl and butadienylsain. Such a silicate can be obtained by reacting a chlorosilane with the corresponding monoethers of ethylene glycol or mixtures thereof with elimination of HCl. The ethylene glycol monoether is obtained z. B. by etherification of ethylene glycol with the corresponding alcohol Z'OH in a molar ratio of 1: 1. It is possible to introduce different - (OCH2CH2OZ ') radicals on the same Si atom.
The mentioned, optionally added silicates serve to improve the thermal stability of the elastomer and support the curing process. Ethyl polysilicate is preferably used.
Further additives of the composition according to the invention are deformation additives, heat stabilizers, antioxidants, plasticizers, pigments, hydroxy-hardened resins, etc. However, these additives must preferably be at least as heat-stable as the basic components.
The compositions according to the invention are vulcanized by heating and optionally under pressure. This is usually done for 10 to 15 minutes at 160 to 200 and on, then for post-curing for 1-24 hours at 200 to 250. Oxygen in the air does not interfere, so that you can vulcanize in an air oven. An autoclave is also suitable as a reaction vessel during the hardening process.
Hot air vulcanization with large amounts of cyanguanidine produces a tough sponge; Usually at working temperatures of 150 to 200, if necessary with the addition of a foam.
The rubbers obtainable according to the invention have high tensile strength and can therefore be used to produce tire treads.
Cyanguanidine enables homogeneous deep vulcanization. Raw rubber hardened in this way can be stored for a long time at room temperature without suffering premature post-hardening. Excellent elastomers result from air hardening.
In the following examples, the tear strength was determined on a long rectangular sample (1.59 X 12, 7 X 101.6 mm) with a 38.1 mm long razor cut (¸trouser leg leg pattern). The measured values are expressed in kg / cm2 of the tensile force required to continue the crack. (Literature: Ravlin and Thomas, J. Poly. Sci., 10, 291 (1953) and Greensmith and Thomas, J. Poly. Sci., 18, 189 (1955). The "B" tensile strength was determined according to ASTM D 624 -54 definitely.
The following materials were used in the examples:
A. High molecular weight dimethylpolysiloxane with terminal hydroxyls and a content of 0.142 mol% vinylmethylsiloxane.

A marked elastomer is also obtained if the filler in sample 2, table III is saturated with one of the following organosilyls instead of diphenylmethylsilyl, as provided in the context of the invention.
Triethylsilyl, di-n-propyhnethylsilyl, dimethylbutylsilyl, phenylmethylsilyl and dimethyl-3, 3, 3 trifluoropropylsilyl; Likewise, when using a filler of the following production method instead of the 35 parts of the filler sample 2, Table III: 61.4 g of a ball with an average surface of 700 m2 / g made of 80 mol of SiO2 and 20 mol% of CH3SiO1.5 is stirred for one hour long with 230 ml isopropanol and 165 ml 38% hydrochloric acid, 10 g trimethylchlorosalane are added and stirring is continued for a further 1 1/2 hours.
The organic phase is separated off and the solvent is completely evaporated. The modified organic filler is then heated to 110 for 40 hours. The powdery material has (CH3) 3SiO0.5 building blocks which are bonded to various Si atoms via siloxane building blocks so that the organosilyl substrate surface is as saturated as is provided within the scope of the invention. The filler has a surface area of 700 m2 / g.
If a kogel of 50 mole / o SiO2 and 50 mole CH3SiO1.5 is treated as above and used in place of the filler in Sample 2, Table III at the same concentration ratios, an excellent elastomer is also obtained.
