Description

Medical tampon for the treatment of human body cavities
Tampons are known intended to serve as a support for medicaments in the treatment of cavities of the human body, in particular in the treatment of diseases of the anus. A tampon of this type comprises a body, of elongated shape, constituted by an absorbent material, said body being fixed by means of a cellulose adhesive to a support formed by a rod engaged by one of its ends in the body of the pad. pad and along the axis of this body and ending at the other end, held outside the cavity to be treated, by a button, in order to prevent the pad from sliding completely inside.

This pad has revealed in use some drawbacks, in particular that of being difficult to introduce into the cavity to be treated, its peripheral surface being not very slippery. Another drawback lies in the fact that certain medicaments contained in the tampon diffuse only with difficulty, or very partially, into the mucous membrane of the cavity to be treated.

The present invention, which aims to obviate these drawbacks, relates to a medical tampon for the treatment of human body cavities comprising a support formed of a rod ending in a button at one of its ends intended to be held in place. out of said cavity, an absorbent material having an ogival shape being fixed by means of a cellulosic adhesive on said rod, characterized in that the absorbent material surrounding the rod of the tampon is covered with a lubricating layer of small thickness, formed a mucilaginous substance capable of transforming into slippery mucilage upon moistening of the tampon, said lubricating layer being intended to facilitate the introduction of the tampon into the body cavity to be treated.

The medical tampon which is the subject of the invention comprises a rod forming a support for a body of absorbent material and terminating at one of its ends with a button integral with the rod and serving to prevent the tampon from sliding completely inside. of the cavity to be treated. The ogival-shaped absorbent material of the body is, for example, cotton wool, synthetic foam, wool or the like, which is impregnated with a solution of a salt. alginic and which is then dried, said body adhering to the rod of the support by means of a cellulose glue.

The body of the tampon is then covered with a thin lubricating layer formed of a mucilaginous substance transforming into slippery mucilage as soon as the tampon is moistened during its use so as to make the lubricating layer slippery, which facilitates greatly the introduction of the tampon into the cavity to be treated. The mucilaginous substance used is, for example, gelatin, agar-agar, guargum, alginates, carboxymethylcellulose, or the like.

The lubricating layer is intended to contain medicaments, which, remaining on the surface of the tampon, would be absorbed very quickly without causing significant losses of substances. These medicaments may consist of substances, either soluble or insoluble in water. By adding a soluble substance, for example glucose, in sufficient quantity to the medicaments contained in the buffer, one creates, during the immersion, a hypertonic solution which causes the penetration of the medicaments into the superficial cells of the mucosa.

By adding substances insoluble in water, for example hydrocortisone, said substances, finely distributed, then act on the mucosa by contact. The lubricating layer allows these substances to be effectively fixed to the surface of the tampon.

In order to make the medicinal solutions contained in the tampon and on its surface communicate with the cellular liquid of the mucosa, it is necessary, in order to take account of the osmotic pressure, for the total solution to be hypertonic with respect to the blood serum.
