Abstract

A lottery ticket having a substrate layer with game data elements printed in a game area and an opaque scratch-off layer applied over game area is modified by game data elements being formed with a four color design. Each game data element can be formed by a game symbol with the design surrounding the game symbol where the design contains graphics which are associated by a theme with the game symbol. Alternatively each game data element can be formed by a game symbol where the design is a background scene on which the game symbol is printed or each game data element can be formed by a game symbol as an integral part of the design.

Description

LOTTERY TICKET WITH A MULTI-COLOUR IMAGED GAME AREA

The present invention relates generally to the field of game or lottery tickets which include a scratch-off layer covering game indicia which can be exposed by the player removing the layer for playing of the game or lottery.

The game provided on each substrate sheet may be for prizes both monetary and product related or may be merely for entertainment where no gambling or prize is involved. The type and value of any prizes can vary widely.
The games may be pre-determined, otherwise known as "instant win" tickets or may include elements of skill or chance.

The games concerned are preferably instant win type games where the result is entirely predetermined, since such games are generally preferred in a lottery situation in order to ensure that the total winnings is predetermined.
However the present invention is not limited to the type of game to be played and can include probability or other games which include game indicia to be exposed.

The construction may also be used in situations where the main objective is for other purposes than gambling such as in promotional games or games of fun for children or others where no gambling or prizes are involved.

Many such tickets are used directly in a lottery situation so that the tickets have no other relevance other than the playing of the lottery or game by which the player may win monetary or other prizes as part of the lottery or gaming situation. However attention has been recently given to other uses of such tickets such as promotional items used by manufacturers of other products to enhance the . .. . . . . ~.. . . . . ....... ... . .... _ . . ....... . . . . .
sale of the product, or as part of packaging or in other situations where the substrate acts in another capacity and the lottery ticket aspect is merely one part of its function.

The marketing of iottery tickets is primarily based on the psychology of impulse buying so that the ticket itself must be inherently attractive to the potential customer sufficiently to trigger the sale.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is one object of the present invention therefore to provide an improved fottery ticket.

According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a lottery ticket comprising:

a ticket substrate having a front surface;

game information printed on the front surface of the ticket substrate;
a game area defined on the front surface;

game data elements printed on the front surface in the game area;

the game area being divided into an array of locations each for receiving a respective game data element;

the game data elements being covered in a manner such that the game data elements are arranged to be exposed by a player;

at least some of the game data elements each including a four colour graphics design in which the design is applied in four colors which have been separated into screened half tone images of each color and then said images are . . , ... . .. .. .. . .. . .. , . . . .
superimposed in separate printing steps to form said image in said game data element.

According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a lottery ticket comprising:

a ticket substrate having a front surface;

game information printed on the front surface of the ticket substrate;
a game area defined on the front surface;

game data elements printed on the front surface in the game area;

the game area being divided into an array of locations each for receiving a respective game data element;

at least one fixing layer applied over the game data elements in the game area which is arranged to prevent release of the printed game data elements from the substrate layer;

at least one opaque scratch-off layer applied over the sealing layer, the scratch-off layer being arranged such that it separates from the sealing layer and breaks down into fragments when scratched by a player;

at least some of the game data elements each including a four colour graphics design in which the design is applied in four colors which have been separated into screened half tone images of each color and then said images are superimposed in separate printing steps to form said image in said game data element.

Preferably the four colors are the conventional colors used in four color printing of yellow, magenta, cyan and black.

In one arrangement, each game data element comprises a game symbol with the design surrounding the game symbol.

In another arrangement, each game data element comprises a game symbol where the design is a background scene on which the game symbol is printed.

In yet another arrangement, each game data element may comprise a game symbol as an integral part of the design.

In all arrangements, the design may contain graphics which are associated by a theme with the game symbol.

Preferably all of the game data elements each comprise a respective design. However in some arrangements some of the game elements may comprise conventional simple symbols.

Preferably the game data elements combine to substantially fill the game area.

Preferably the game information printed on the ticket is associated by a game theme with at least some of the game data elements.

Preferably the ticket has a printed layer over the scratch-off layer which contains a design which is associated by a game theme with at least some of the game data elements. ' Thus the important new step is to image the game data with four colour graphics. The graphics may be consistent with the game symbol, that is for example , a lake scene surrounding a black boat, or tied into the game concept such as a slot machine background with three black symbols to match showing in a window.

Alternatively the imaging in the game area could be done in advance of the actual symbol imaging and would form more of a background type of scene with 5 no particular correlation to the actual game symbol which is printed after the variable imaging, in multiple colours, is applied A third variation is to run the actual symbol in high resolution, using multiple colours to achieve a greater aesthetic effect. For example a currently available conventional ticket, entitled Flaming 7s, uses a symbol printed in either red or black. Using the new concept, the same game could be printed using a graphical font in multiple colours showing a stylized 7" surrounded by flames in red/orange/yellow. This style of symbol would be very effective and provide increased player recognition of the various symbols. Similarly a Gemstones or similar ticket style could use actual images of various types of gems including rubies, emeralds, diamonds, etc.

Many other types of variations are possible of a similar mature to that described above.

Technological advances in variable imaging systems have resulted in finer resolution graphics being commercially available. This enhanced resolution is coupled with cost reductions in terms of the costs to apply the various images onto the substrate.

The primary advantages of this method are the following:
1. Increased security. One known form of attempted compromise of a ticket is based on the susceptibility of the game symbols to be removed from one ticket being pasted down on another ticket creating an apparent winner. In the past this has been partially defeated by the use of "Benday" patterns which are a coloured line pattern printed beneath the game symbol. This approach has been of limited success because of the limitations of the printing process. Typically there is only a limited number of different patterns in a row (4 - 12) on a 24" repeat so therefore a match of the correct game symbol and pattern can be done. With the addition of variable imaging in accordance with the present invention behind the symbol it could be virtually impossible to find the correct match in order to create an apparent winner.

Another known form of attempted compromise of a ticket is based on Micro-Scratching which is the process by which very small, pin-hole marks may be made through the scratch-off to try to identify what the hidden symbol is. Use of full graphics, with a high degree of variability, makes this process much more difficult.
In the past security against this method has been achieved by keeping the symbols similar in appearance and by moving the location of the symbols (bounce) over the game area. This has been effective however in order to create the area for the movement of the symbols, the game areas have been increased. With this enhanced method the use of bounce can be eliminated because the use of colour makes the symbols more difficult to ascertain correctly using Micro-Scratching.

2. Increased marketability. The addition of enhanced variable imaging behind the symbols increases the apparent value of the ticket in the eyes of the player. For example in a non-lottery game ticket, instead of saying "Big Mac" to denote a winner the ticket can include an actual photograph of the prize.
Similarly in a lottery ticket the game data may comprise an image of a picture of the Eiffel Tower for a travel based lottery ticket. This has an aesthetic impact for the player.

BRIEF DESCRlPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

DETAILED DESCRIPTfON

A book 10 of lottery tickets 11 includes a plurality of the lottery tickets 11 in a row commonly fan folded as shown at 12.

Each ticket is formed from a ticket substrate supplied to the printer in a roll 16. This can be a card stock only or may be of a card stock 13 on which is applied a foil layer 14 covering the front surface.

On the foil is printed a game area 17 defined on the ticket substrate and indicia defining game data 18 is printed over the ticket substrate in the game area either directly on to the ticket substrate or more usually onto a white lily pad printed onto the ticket substrate and formed from a series of security layers well known in the art.

At least one fixing layer is applied over the game data in the game area which is arranged to prevent release of the printed game data from the substrate layer and at least one opaque scratch-off layer 19 is applied over the sealing layer, the scratch-off layer being arranged such that it separates from the sealing layer and breaks down into fragments when scratched by a player.

In addition to the game data in the game area, the ticket has printed onto the front face over the ticket substrate various game information 20 and a bar code or security code 21.

During the printing, the ticket substrate 22 is supplied in a continuous strip having a front surface. The various materials identified above are printed onto the ticket substrate using printing systems 26, 27, 27 which provide variable image printing commonly using ink jet processes in single color or multicolour processes.

During the printing process the printing is repeatedly registered along the strip by a reader 31 detecting registration marks on the ticket substrate.

The ticket also has a printed layer 30 over the scratch-off layer which is associated with the pattern 15 on the foil thereon.

The length of the tickets between ends 33 and 34 formed by a die cutter 35.

The design printed in the game locations comprises an overprint layer.
This layer comprises an image obtained from a design in which the colors in the design have been separated into half tone images of each color which are used to provide the overprinting layer. The colors are then printed on to the lottery ticket one over the other using the printing devices 26, 27, 28. The overprinting layer is comprised of four overprint layers which correspond to four different process colors such as yellow, magenta, cyan, and black.

The lottery tickets of the present invention can be produced by a three section printing operation in which in a first section printed indicia is printed on the graphic area of the lottery ticket. Such printed indicia for this region of the lottery ticket includes, but is not limited to, the name of the lottery game, illustrations, textual material, issue numbers, background colors and the like. The back surface can also be printed with printed indicia such as instructions for claiming a prize, and the like. The printing is carried out using known technologies such as flexography, gravure printing, screen printing, lithography, dry offset printing and the like.

The four colors used for the game data elements in a typical four color process are yellow, magenta, cyan and black. The order of printing of the colors can vary but the preferred order of printing is yellow, magenta, cyan and black.

The images provide tremendous detail so that counterfeiting is . . . .. . . ... . . .. . .. , rendered difficult if not impossible. In addition, alteration of the multi-coloured game images on the lottery ticket is made practically impossible because of the complexity of the image. Alteration is a technique in which counterfeiters attempt to alter a game symbol to create a different value. For example changing a $1000 symbol to 5 a $100 by removing a 0 in order to make an apparent winner out of a loser.

In carrying out the process of the present invention, in order to ensure proper alignment of each of the printing layers, photocell devices installed in each of the stations of the press may be linked to various controls of the paper feeding mechanism of the press. Preferably, the registration devices in the flexographic 10 press should allow for no more than a 0.005 inch variation on each station.
In addition the use of camera-based vision inspection allows for the capture, display and examination of individual, variable game symbols to ensure that they meet the requirements as specified and do not contain any defects such as missing or surplus ink.

In Figure 4 is shown schematically a ticket of a game relating to travel where each of the game elements includes a four colour graphics design in which the design is applied in four colors which have been separated into screened half tone images of each color and then said images are superimposed in separate printing steps to form said image in said game data element. In this example, the game elements relate to travel and include an image of a mode of travel such as a train, boat, airplane or automobile. In the game a number of the images are matched to find a winner where sufficient matches are found. The images of the mode of travel are printed in the four color graphics to provide an attractive appearance and the advantages set forth herein.

In Figure 5 is shown a Tic Tac Toe type game where each of the X and 0 symbols carries a background in the four color image process.

In Figure 6 is shown a number matching game where each of the number symbols carries a background in the four color image process.

Since various modifications can be made in my invention as herein above described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without department from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
