Description
METHOD AND DEVICE FOR ANTIROTATION LOCKING OF A NUT ON A THREADED ROD
The present invention relates to a device for locking a nut on a threaded rod against rotation.
There exist nuts that have orifices formed through their side faces through which it is possible to pass a braking filament, generally a metal wire.
This braking filament is to provide a rigid connection between a nut and a lock nut adjacent thereto so as to prevent either one of them from becoming lose relative to the other.
However, when the tightening torque is insufficient or when the filament is not tight enough, that solution does not make it possible to ensure that the nut and the lock nut do not loosen together.
Document FR539919 discloses a locking device comprising firstly a washer provided with an antirotation element in the form of a straight edge that comes into contact with a flat carried by the rod, and secondly a tightening nut. However neither the tightening nut nor the washer are suitable for co-operating with a braking filament. Consequently, the locking of the connection is not very reliable.
An object of the present invention is to resolve this technical problem in satisfactory manner.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by means of a device for locking a nut on a threaded rod, the nut being pierced by an orifice for a braking filament, the device being of the type comprising a washer provided with a central orifice, at least one peripheral orifice for passing said braking filament, and an antirotation element for co-operating with an element of complementary profile formed on the rod, the device being characterized in that said antirotation element of the washer is constituted by a straight edge for co-operating with a flat formed on the rod parallel to its generator lines, and in that the orifice of the nut opens out laterally in two adjacent f aces .
According to an advantageous characteristic, the diameter of the central orifice of the washer is slightly greater than the outside diameter of the threaded rod.
According to another characteristic, the diameter of the washer is greater than the diameter of the nut.
The invention also provides a method of locking a nut on a threaded rod by means of the device, the method being characterized in that:
said washer is mounted on the rod and is positioned in the selected location;
the nut is screwed on and tightened so that it is in contact with the washer; and ~ one of the ends of the braking filament is attached in at least one of the peripheral orifices of the washer and the other end is attached in one of the side orifices of the nut, with the filament being put under tension.
In a variant implementation:
- a nut and a lock nut are screwed on and tightened on opposite sides of said washer; and the ends of the braking filament are attached in respective side orifices of the nut and/or of the lock nut, while also passing through at least one of the orifices of the washer.
The device of the invention prevents any possibility of the nut becoming loose because the washer is provided with means that prevent rotation.
In addition, the washer is a reusable part since its assembly and use are not accompanied by any deformation or damage.
The invention will be better understood on reading the following description accompanied by the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the washer of the invention shown on its own;
The present invention relates to a device for locking a nut on a threaded rod against rotation.

According to an advantageous characteristic, the diameter of the central orifice of the washer is slightly greater than the outside diameter of the threaded rod.
According to another characteristic, the diameter of the washer is greater than the diameter of the nut.
The invention also provides a method of locking a nut on a threaded rod by means of the device, the method being characterized in that:
said washer is mounted on the rod and is positioned in the selected location;
the nut is screwed on and tightened so that it is in contact with the washer; and ~ one of the ends of the braking filament is attached in at least one of the peripheral orifices of the washer and the other end is attached in one of the side orifices of the nut, with the filament being put under tension.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the washer of the invention shown on its own;
Figures 2 and 3 are respectively a perspective view and a side view of a threaded rod fitted with the nut-locking device of the invention; and Figure 4 is a fragmentary section view through a variant implementation of the method of the invention.
The washer 1 shown in Figure 1 has at least one, and in this case a series of eight, through peripheral orifices 10 through which it is possible to pass and/or anchor a metal braking filament 2 (shown in Figure 3).
The washer 1 also has a central orifice la defined at least in part by an antirotation edge 11 implemented in this case as a rectilinear or straight edge. As shown in Figure 2, the edge 11 is designed to co-operate with a face of complementary profile formed on the threaded rod T and implemented in this case in the form of flat M.
The flat M extends longitudinally parallel to the generator lines of the rod T.
A set comprising a nut E and a lock nut E' each having side orifices a is designed to be mounted on the rod T. The orifices a open out laterally in two adjacent faces of the nut E.
The diameter of the central orifice la of the washer 1 is slightly greater than the outside diameter of the threaded rod T.
The rod T can be inserted through the central orifice la of the washer 1 until the washer becomes positioned at a selected location on the rod. The washer 1 is mounted by taking care to screw and tighten the nut E against the lock nut E' on either side of the washer and in contact therewith. Since the diameter of the washer 1 is greater than the diameter of the nut E and E', one of the ends 2a of the braking thread 2 is passed through one of the peripheral orifices 10 of the washer and the other end 2b is passed through one of the side orifices E of one of the nuts E, E', preferably putting the filament under tension.
A variant configuration consists in attaching the ends of the braking filament 2 in respective side orifices E of the nut E and of the lock nut E', with the filament passing through one or more orifices 10 of the washer 1.
Another variant as shown in Figure 4 consists in mounting the washer 1 on the threaded rod T until it comes into abutment against a bearing face A carried by a wall P. In this case, the bearing face A is constituted by the edge of a cylindrical bushing surrounding the rod T. The nut E is screwed along the rod T and tightened in contact with the washer 1. The braking filament (not shown in this figure) is then inserted respectively in orifices e_ of the nut E and in orifices 10 of the washer 1 and is then put under tension and locked. By way of example, this configuration can be used for fixing a control cable to a feedthrough passing through a wall, while avoiding any risk of subsequent looseness.
