FIELD OF TH . TNV 'NTION
This invention relates to the field of sport vehicle luggage bags and more particularly to a sport vehicle handlebar bag.
BACKGROUND OF TH TNVFNTION
Sport vehicle handlebar bags are relatively small pouches or bags which can be secured to the handlebars of a sport vehicle such as a snowmobile or motorcycle to store various small items such as a camera, film, lip balm, chewing gum, snacks, keys, etc.
Handlebar bags are often preferred when only limited storage capacity is needed because larger bags such as trunk bags may partially obstruct a sport vehicle operator's rearview, and saddle bags and tank bags may, such as in the case of snowmobiles, reduce available seating area.
Sport vehicle handlebar bags typically include a first handlebar strap of adjustable-length which extends from the handlebar bag and is wrapped around a portion of the handlebar to the right of the steering column, and a second handlebar strap of adjustable-length which extends from the handlebar bag and is wrapped around a portion of the handle bar to the left of the steering column. The free end of each of the handlebar straps typically includes a buckle connector which is releasably attached to a complementary connector affixed to the handlebar bag. Quick-connect buckles including a male connector having resiliently flexible prongs which engage a socket of a female connector have been used to allow quick and easy securement of the handlebar bag to, and removal of the handlebar bag from, the handlebar of a sport vehicle. Available handlebar bags having quick-connect buckles have included the same type of connector at the free end of the each of the straps, and two connectors of the same type attached directly to the handlebar bag with a short loop of fabric having a fixed length.
Typically, a male connector is located at the free end of each of the adjustable-length straps, and the female connectors are each attached to the handlebar bag with one of the short loops of fabric.

On occasions, a sport vehicle operator may want to park his/her vehicle and walk to a location remote from the vehicle. On these occasions, the sport vehicle operator may wish to remove the handlebar bag from the vehicle and carry it with him/her.
The invention pertains to a sport vehicle handlebar bag which can be easily removed from the handlebars of a sport vehicle and comfortably worn around the waist of a person.
The handlebar bag includes a plurality of panels defining a pouch, a first adjustable-length strap connected at a first end to the pouch and having a first male quick-connect buckle connector at a second free end, and a second adjustable-length strap connected at a first end to the pouch and having a first female quick-connect buckle connector at a second free end. The first male quick-connect buckle connector is releasably securable to the first female quick-connect buckle connector to allow use of the sport vehicle handlebar bag as a body pack which is wearable around the waist of a person. The sport vehicle handlebar bag also includes a second female quick-connect buckle connector secured to the pouch, and a second male quick-connect buckle connector secured to the pouch. The first male quick-connect buckle connector is releasably securable to the second female quick-connect buckle connector, and the second male quick-connect buckle connector is releasably securable to the first female quick-connect buckle connector, to allow the sport vehicle handlebar bag to be secured to the handlebar of a sport vehicle.
BRIEF D . rPTION OF TH 1~RAWTN(IS
FIG. 1 is a front perspective view of a sport vehicle handlebar bag according to the invention strapped to the handlebar of a snowmobile;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the rear and top of the sport vehicle handlebar bag shown in FIG. 1; and FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the sport vehicle handlebar bag strapped around the waist of a person.
In FIG. 1, there is shown a sport vehicle handlebar bag 10 strapped around the handlebar 11 of a snowmobile 12. Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, handlebar 10 is comprised of a plurality of panels, including a front panel 14, a rear panel 16, and a top panel 18. Panels 14, 16, and 18 are secured together generally along their edges to form a bag or pouch defining an
2 enclosed storage space for holding items which a sport vehicle operator may wish to carry on a trip, such as cameras, film, lip balm, chewing gum, snacks, keys, etc. Panels 14, 16 and 18 are preferably flexible fabric panels. Examples of suitable flexible fabric panels include a variety of woven or knitted fabrics, with fabric made from synthetic fibers being preferred. A
suitable commercially available material for panels 14, 16 and 18 is polyurethane coated CORDURA~ nylon fabric. Panels 14, 16 and 18 may be connected together to form a bag or pouch 10 by sewing, stitching, thermally fusing, or otherwise joining the panels together.
Sport vehicle handlebar bag 10 is provided with one or more zippers 20 to allow the storage space defined by bag 10 to be opened or closed as desired. Sport vehicle handlebar bag 10 may be provided with a separate compartment 22 joined to the exterior of front panel 14, and having its own zipper 24.
Sport vehicle handlebar bag 10 includes a pair of adjustable-length handlebar straps 26 and 27 for securing bag 10 to handlebar 11. The length of each of straps 26 and 27 can be adjusted independently by folding the fabric strip end 28, 29 of each strap 26, 27 respectively over upon itself and holding the ends 28, 29 at a desired position using sliding retainers 30, 31.
Adjustable straps of this type are well known in the field of sport vehicle luggage and will not be described in any further detail.
Straps 26 and 27 are each connected at a first end 32, 33 respectively to sport vehicle handlebar bag 10. A male quick-connect buckle connector 36 is connected to the free end 34 of strap 76. A female quick-connect buckle connector 40 is connected to the free end 38 of strap 27. Attached to sport vehicle handlebar bag 10 is a second male quick-connect buckle connector 42. Male connector 42 is secured to bag 10 by a relatively short loop of fabric 44 of fixed length. A second female quick-connect buckle connector 46 is attached to bag 10 with a short loop of fabric 48 of fixed length. Suitable quick-connect buckle connectors are well known in the field of sport vehicle luggage. An example of this type of connector is, for example, disclosed in U.S. Patent No. 4,712,280.
The provision of two adjustable-length straps 26, 27, one of which includes at its end a male connector 36, the other of which includes a female connector 40, allows bag 10 to be either releasably secured to the handlebar of a sport vehicle as shown in FIG.
1, or strapped around the waist 50 of a person 52 as shown in FIG. 3. More specifically, bag 10 can be
3 secured to a handlebar 11 by wrapping strap 26 around a left-hand portion of handlebar 11 and connecting male connector 36 to female connector 48, and wrapping strap 27 around a right-hand side of handlebar 11 and connecting male connector 42 with female connector 30.
Alternatively, straps 26 and 27 can be wrapped around a waist 50 of a person 52 and secured around the person's waist by inserting male connector 36 into female connector 40.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications to the preferred embodiment of the invention as described herein can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
