A circuit and method for receiving and sequentially decremen-ting the x and y coordinates of a desired cursor location so as to produce in a raster-scan display system a cross-hair cursor the component parts of which extend the full height and width of the display area.

Claims (30)

PF 2662 TS/? 10/12/78 I claim as my invention:
1. A circuit for producing a full-screen cross-hair cursor in a display system including a display screen and means for producing a raster-scan image thereon, said circuit comprising;
(a) positional means for producing first and second digital signals representative respectively of first and second coordinate values of a desired location on said screen of a cursor to be produced;
(b) first counter means for receiving and selectively decre-menting said first digital signal and for producing a first indication when said signal has been decremented to zero;
(c) second counter means for receiving and selectively decrementing said second digital signal and for producing a second indication when said signal has been decremented to zero; and (d) means responsive to said first and second indications for producing an illuminated spot on the screen of said display system whenever either, but not both, of said digital signals have been decremented to zero.
2. The cursor producing circuit of claim 1 wherein said image produced by said display system is composed of a plurality of sequentially generated frames each of which is composed of a plurality of sequentially generated, mutually parallel raster-line segments divided into a plurality of equally spaced, sequentially occuring time divisions, and wherein said first counter means includes means for decrementing said first digital signal at a rate of one digital unit per said time division.
3. The cursor producing circuit of claim 2 wherein said second counter means includes means for decrementing said second digital signal at a rate of one digital unit per said line segment.
4. The cursor producing circuit of claim 2 wherein said first counter means includes means for receiving said first digital signal prior to the beginning of the production of each said line segment.
5. The cursor producing circuit of claim 3 wherein said second counter means includes means for receiving said second digital signal prior to the beginning of the production of each said frame.
6. The cursor producing circuit of claim 2 wherein the raster-line segments of every other said frame are interlaced with the raster-line segments of the immediately preceding said frame, and wherein said circuit further comprises means for disabling the operation of said second counter means during the production of every other said frame.
7. A method for producing a full-screen cross-hair cursor in a display system including a display screen and means for producing a raster-scan image thereon, said method comprising the steps of:

(a) producing first and second digital signals representative respectfully of first and second coordinate of a desired location on said screen of a cursor to be produced;

(b) receiving and selectively decrementing said first digital signal and producing a first indication when said signal has been decre-mented to zero;
(c) receiving and selectively decrementing said second digital signal and producing a second indication when said signal has been decremented to zero; and (d) producing an illuminated spot on the screen of said display system whenever either, but not both, of said digital signals have been decremented to zero.

The cursor producing method of claim 7 wherein said image produced by said display system is composed of a plurality of sequentially generated frames each of which is composed of a plurality of sequentially generated, mutually parallel raster-line segments divided into a plurality of equally spaced sequentially occuring time divisions, and wherein said step (b) includes the step of decrementing said first digital signal at a rate of one digital unit per said time division.
9. The cursor producing method of claim 8 wherein said step (c) includes the step of decrementing said second digital signal at a rate of one digital unit per line segment.
10. The cursor producing method of claim 8 wherein said step (b) includes the step of receiving said first digital signal prior to the beginning of each said line segment.

11. The cursor producing method of claim 9 wherein said step (c) includes the step of receiving said second digital signal prior to the beginning of the production of each said frame.

The cursor producing method of claim 8 wherein the raster-line segments of every other said frame are interlaced with the raster-line segments of the immediately preceding said frame, and wherein said step (c) includes decrementing said second digital signal only during the production of every other said frame.
13. A circuit for producing a full-screen cross-hair cursor in a display system including a display screen and means for producing a raster-screen image thereon, the circuit comprising:
(a) first counter means responsive to a first input signal for selectively stepping a first initial value and for producing a first indication when said initial value has been stepped an amount equal to said first input signal;
(b) second counter means responsive to a second input signal for selectively stepping a second initial value and for producing a second indication when said initial value has been stepped an amount equal to said second input signal; and (c) means responsive to said first and second indications for producing an illuminated spot on the screen of said display system whenever either, but not both, of said indications are present.
14. A method for producing a full-screen cross-hair cursor in a display system including a display screen and means for producing a raster-scan image thereon, said method comprising the steps of:
(a) receiving a first input signal and selectively stepping a first initial value thereby producing a first indication when said first initial value has been stepped an amount equal to said first input signal;
(b) receiving a second input signal and selectively stepping a second initial value thereby producing a second indication when said second initial value has been stepped an amount equal to said second input signal; and (c) producing an illuminated spot on the screen of said display system whenever either, but not both, of said indications are present.

CLAIMS SUPPORTED BY SUPPLEMENTARY DISCLOSURE
15. A circuit for producing a full-screen cross-hair cursor in a display system including a display screen and means for producing a raster-scan image thereon, said circuit comprising:
(a) means for receiving first and second input signals representative, respectively, of first and second coordinate values of a desired location on said screen of a cursor to be produced;
(b) first counter means responsive to said first input signal for receiving and selectively stepping a first initial value and for producing a first indication when said value has been stepped an amount equal to said first input signal;
(c) second counter means responsive to said second input signal for receiving and selectively stepping a second initial value and for producing a second indication when said value has been stepped an amount equal to said second input signal; and (d) means responsive to said first and second indications for producing an illuminated spot on the screen of said display system whenever either, but not both, of said indications are present.
16. The cursor-producing circuit of claim 15 wherein said image produced by said display system is composed of a plurality of sequentially generated frames each of which is composed of a plurality of sequentially generated, mutually parallel raster-line segments divided into a plurality of equally spaced, sequentially occurring time divisions, and wherein said first counter means includes means for stepping said first initial value at a rate of one unit per said time division.
17. The cursor-producing circuit of claim 16 wherein said second counter means includes means for stepping said second initial value at a rate of one unit per said line segment.
18. The cursor-producing circuit of claim 16 wherein said first counter means includes means for receiving said first initial value prior to the beginning of the production of each said line segment.
19. The cursor-producing circuit of claim 17 wherein said second counter means includes means for receiving said second initial values prior to the beginning of the production of each said frame.
20. The cursor-producing circuit of claim 16 wherein the raster-line segments of every other said frame are interlaced with the raster-line segments of the immediately preceding said frame, and wherein said circuit further comprises means for disabling the operation of said second counter means during the production of every other said frame.
21. The cursor-producing circuit of claim 15 wherein said first and second initial values are equal, respectively, to said first and second input signals, and wherein each said indication is produced when its associated initial value is stepped to zero.
22. The cursor-producing circuit of claim 15 wherein said first and second initial values are zero, and wherein each said indication is produced when its associated initial value is stepped to a value equal to a respective one of said first and second inputs.
23. A method for producing a full-screen cross-hair cursor in a display system including a display screen and means for producing a raster-scan image thereon, said method comprising the steps of:
(a) producing first and second input signals representative, respectively, of first and second coordinate values of a desired location on said screen of a cursor to be produced;
(b) receiving and selectively stepping a first initial value and producing a first indication when said value has been stepped an amount equal to said first input signal;
(c) receiving and selectively stepping a second initial value and producing a second indication when said value has been stepped an amount equal to said second input signal; and (d) producing an illuminated spot on the screen of said display system whenever either, but not both, of said indications are present.

The cursor-producing method of claim 23 wherein said image produced by said display system is composed of a plurality of sequentially generated frames each of which is composed of a plurality of sequentially generated, mutually parallel raster-line segments divided into a plurality of equally spaced, sequentially occurring time divisions, and wherein said step (b) includes the step of stepping said first initial value at a rate of one unit per said time division.
25. The cursor-producing method of claim 24 wherein said step (c) includes the step of stepping said second initial value at a rate of one unit per line segment.
26. The cursor-producing method of claim 24 wherein said step (b) includes the step of receiving said first initial value prior to the beginning of each said line segment.
27. The cursor-producing method of claim 25 wherein said step (c) includes the step of receiving said second initial value prior to the beginning of the production of each said frame.
28. The cursor-producing method of claim 24 wherein the raster-line segments of every other said frame are interlaced with the raster-line segments of the immediately preceding said frame, and wherein said step (c) includes stepping said second initial value only during the production of every other said frame.
29. The cursor-producing method of claim 23 wherein said first and second initial values are equal, respectively, to said first and second input signals, and wherein each said indication is produced when its associate initial value is step to zero.
30. The cursor-producing method of claim 23 wherein said first and second initial values are zero, and wherein each said indication is produced when its associated initial value is stepped to a value equal to a respective one of said first and second input signals.
