Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A support for the human head primarily intended for use to maintain and preserve a coiffure. A person using the support lies face down and the face and head is supported by flexible sheet material which is supported by a peripheral frame which preferably is of general oval configuration and which is supported in elevated position by downwardly depending support legs. In use the coiffure is supported in a position to avoid disturbance during sleep. In a preferred embodiment the support legs are adjustable as to height to enable the device to be comfortably used by people of varying size and weight.

Description

The present invention relates to a support for supporting the human head in an elevated position and is primarily intended for use to maintain and preserve a coiffure from disturbance. While the invention is primarily intended for this use, it is apparent that the support can be used to support the head of a person for whatever reason and while for coiffure maintenance the user will lie face down on the support, for other usage such as for supporting the head of a bed-ridden patient the support would support the back of the head in a comfortable manner and provide a support which comfortably holds the head in a proper position.
10 It is often that a person wishes to be carefully coiffured in the morning or after rest but sleeping or resting using a pillow alone results in a disturbance or messing of the coiffure and even though care may be taken upon arising to rearrange the hair to the original coiffure the result is never exactly the same.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a comfortable and elevated support to receive the Face of the user and to maintain the coiffure in undisturbed manner during sleep.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a comfor-table but at the same time fully supporting device to hold the head of the 20 user in a desired position and which may be used either in the face down or face up position depending upon the reason for the use of the device.
The device may find particular application for use by people encountering neck or back difficulties and which will function to maintain the head during sleep or rest in a comfortable and yet properly supported position to relieve discomfort.
To achieve the above objects the present invention specifically relates to a support for a human head and which is primarily intended to preserve a coiffure and comprising an upper peripheral frame and support legs extending downwardly therefrom to support the frame in elevated 30 position, and flexible sheet material carried by the upper peripheral frame to comfortably support the head of a human.
In order to provide for comfort of use when the head is in the face down position the flexible sheet material is elastic and is made of porous material which enables the material to l~breathell during use to .

prevent irritation to the user.
The flexible and elastic sheet material may be ribbed or corrugated or of other non-planar configuration provided with a plurality of spaced small openings to facilitate ~breathing~ and provide maximum comfort without irri- ;
tation.
The upper peripheral frame of the support is preferably of oval configuration and of a shape generally conforming to the frontal shape of the human face, al~hough other configurations are oF course possible within the inventive concept.
The peripheral frame is supported by support legs which extend downwardly at spaced distances around the peripheral frame and which are adjustable as to height whereby the elevation of the upper peripheral frame can be varied and portions of the upper peripheral frame can have varying elevations. In one embodiment this variation of elevation can be achieved by having the supporting legs comprise hollow upper sections and lower ~, sections with the lower sections being telescopically received in the , . .
hollow upper sections and with means to secure related sections in desired telescopic relationship to vary the elevation of the upper peripheral frame.
In a further preferred embodiment the flexible sheet material has an opening 20 which may be of general triangular configuration and which is adapted to receive the nose and mouth of the user. -The support may also be provided with a lower frame to which the lower ends of the support legs are secured.
The upper peripheral frame is preferably inclined with respect "~ , to the lower frame to increase comfort during use.
In a preferred construction the flexible sheet material is removably fastened to the upper peripheral frame to facilitate cleansing care.
These and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description taken in coniunction with the attached 30 drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of the support according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is a side view of the support shown in Figure 1 but which shows the support in use supporting the head of a coiffured person.

12~
The support has an upper peripheral frame 2 (shown in broken lines in Figure 1) to which is removably fastened a flexible and elastic sheet material 4 and as indicated in Figure 1 the fastening may be accomplished by a cord 6 which extends around the periphery of the material 4 and is adapted ~ -to be tied as at 8 to secure the material around the upper peripheral frame 2.
The material 4 may be provided with spaced small openings 10 to facilitate ~breathing~ of the material to avoid irritation to the user and additionally may be provided with a generally triangular opening 12 adapted to receive the nose and mouth of the user (see Figure 2). Additionally the material 10 4 may be provided with eye openings such as shown in broken lines at 14 in Figure 1. Figure 1 illustrates the eye openings 14 only in broken lines and it will be appreciated that these openings could actually be cut from the material if it was preferred by the user. -The support has a lower frame 16 and in preferred construction the support legs generally indicated by numeral 18 are in the form of lower sections 20 and hollow upper sections 22. The lower sections 20 are slidably received within the hollow upper sections 22 and it will be appreciated that the elevation of the peripheral frame 2 can be selected as desired. This selection of elevation may be accomplished by providing thumb screws 24 on 20 two, three or more of the legs, and threaded portions 26 secured to the thumb screws 24 are then threadedly received within the hollow upper sections 22. `
It will thus be appreciated that by rotation of the thumb screws 24 that the elevation of the peripheral frame 2 can be precisely positioned to the desired height. After the desired height has been selected set screws 28 carried by the upper sections of some of the legs would then be tightened to hold the peripheral frame in the desired elevation.
Of course other ways of adjusting and securing the height or elevation of the peripheral frame with respect to the lower frame 16.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 for maximum comfort the peripherai 30 frame 2 should be inclined or angled with respect to the lower frame 16 and of course the supporting legs 18 will vary in height to accomplish this desired incl ination.

The upper peripheral frame 2, lower frame 16 and support legs can of course be made of any suitable material and a strong, light weight, . .

non-corrosive material such as magnesium or aluminum or alloys thereof may be used~ or alternatively these components may be macle from suitable plastics material by known methods.
The material 4 which supports the head of the user is as indicated flexible and somewhat elastic and may be made of suitable synthetic or natural material such as rubber, porous rubber, and synthetic rubber and plastic formulations which provide the necessary flexibility and elasticity and support and also have sufficient porosity to avoid discomfort to the user. -The attached figures are directed toward the use of the support 10 by a person in a face down position but as indicated the support is also useful as a support for the back of the head9 and in this particular use the openings such as 12 and 14 may not be desired or necessary, or alternatively the material could be selectively provided with apertures to provide maximum comfort for the back of the head.
As clearly shown in Figure 2 the mouth and nose of the user projects downwardly through the opening 12 so that the head of the user is supported by the bones (jaw, cheek, ~forhead, etc.) of the user and that "soft" parts of the face (nose, lips~ are free from any supporting contact which renders the structure more comfortable in use.
