Each of the devices includes a time-lapse memory, a backup memory, and a device processor. Data is transmitted from the mobile switching center to the reserve memory of the designated device, while the device is operating from the elapsed time memory. In a first run, the data is copied from the backup memory to the elapsed time memory when the device is idle. In a second embodiment, the device's operations are switched to "run" from the backup memory when the device is idle. Subsequent software loads will cycle between time-lapse and backup memories. In a third embodiment, a single memory bank comprises both color-time memory and backup memory. The reserve memory area is located in a different location, in the memory bank, than the time bank memory area. The software data is written to the backup memory in the background, without disturbing the device traffic. When the device is idle, the location indicator is switched to the reserve memory area so that the device "runs" the newly loaded software. The inventive concept allows for efficient software loading that reduces downtime and is transparent to the user.
