<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to bedside tables, sofas and similar furniture.
According to the present invention, a bedside, sofa or the like which can be adjusted to a position in which it can serve as an inclined backrest, is hinged to the part of the main frame which supports it and is wedged by devices which include one or more fixed length links pivoting at one end on the part of the main frame which supports the bedside and at the other end on the bedside itself (or on a member attached to it), the devices ensuring the articulation of the bedside to the part of the main frame which supports it having a shape which allows the bedside to move in a limited way in both directions with respect to the pivot axis.
The bedside must in fact be able to move in both directions in a limited manner with respect to the pivot axis since the length of the connecting member or members which wedge the bedside is fixed.
The devices which ensure the articulation of the bedside to the part of the main frame which supports it preferably comprise a pair of slotted plates fixed to the upper part of the bedside, the plates each being arranged in a vertical plane perpendicular to the plane. general of the bedside and each near each lateral member (or at least on each side) of the part of the main frame which supports the bedside, the slot of each plate receiving

-when using the bedside as a sloping backrest, each lug or equivalent is at or near the upper end of the slot in the corresponding slit plate and when actually used as a bedside , each pin is at or near the lower end of the slot. Other devices used to provide the above-mentioned articulation include groove and lug devices similar to the slot and lug devices just described, as well as swivel rod and tube devices. , or telescopic devices analogous to slot and pin and groove and pin devices.
Other devices used to ensure the articulation of the bedside to the part of the main frame which supports it are devices comprising two metal bands bent at each end and fixed to the bedside in a position similar to that of the shelves. As the aforementioned slits, the spaces separated these bands from the bedside corresponding to the slits of the slit plates and receiving a horizontal bar or the equivalent, which corresponds to the lugs or the like mentioned in conjunction with the slit plates.
The fixed length link (s) mentioned above preferably comprise two link members formed by the two lateral parts of a U-bar or the equivalent, the middle part of which is substantially equal in length to the width of the bed, sofa or similar piece of furniture, and which is mounted so as to be able to pivot either on the part of the main frame which supports the bedside, or on the bedside itself. A variation comprises a wooden block pivoting on one side on the part of the main frame which supports the bedside and on the other side on the rear face of the bedside.
The two pivot axes of the connecting members must obviously be horizontal, when the bed, sofa or other similar piece of furniture is in its normal position, but it is also necessary, when the bedside table is used as such and not as a backrest , that the pivot axis which is on the bedside is located above the pivot axis located on the part of the main frame which supports the bedside rather than below this axis, since it is obviously desirable that the bedside be at a higher level when used as such than when used as a backrest.
It is possible, if desired, to use the bedside with a spring or a counterweight acting against the weight of the bedside and thus facilitating the passage of the bedside from one of its two extreme positions to the other. Thus, one can for example mount a tension spring between the pivot axis of the bedside and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of the connecting member and a point located at an upper level on the part of the main frame which supports the bedside.
The bedside can be wider than the bed, sofa: or other piece of furniture itself.
The front face of the bedside is preferably padded.
Beds, sofas and the like can be provided with bedside tables according to the present invention which a person who is resting on the bed, sofa or the like can easily move from one position to another.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, each of the two figares of which is a fragmentary schematic vertical section of the bedside and the part of the main frame of a bed, sofa or similar piece of furniture which supports the bedside, provided with a following bedside table invention.
In the figure the bedside itself is shown at 11, and one of the two uprights constituting the part of the main frame which supports the bedside is shown at 12. The device ensuring the articulation of the bedside to the part of the bed. main frame which supports it comprises a pair of slotted plates, one of which is shown at 13, fixed to the upper part of the bedside in a vertical plane perpendicular to the general plane of the bedside, and located near the post 12; the slot in the plate 13 receives a lug 14 mounted on the adjacent part of the upright 12. A connecting member of length fie constituted by a U-bar, shown at 15, pivots as shown at 16, on the upright 12, and as shown in 17, in sockets fixed to the bedside 11.
A tension spring 18 acting between the pivot axis indicated at 17 and the lug 14, is provided to facilitate the passage of the bedside 11 from one position to another. The position of the various elements when the bedside table is used as an inclined backrest is shown in dotted lines.
In FIG. 2, the bedside itself is shown at 21, and one of the two uprights constituting the part of the main frame which supports the bedside is shown at 22. In this case, the device ensuring the articulation of the bedside table. bedside to the part of the main frame which supports it comprises two metal bands bent at each end, one of which is shown at 23. It can be seen that the spaces located below these bands (or strictly speaking between the bands and the bedside) correspond to the slots in the plates 13 of FIG. 1. A bar 24 placed below the strips 23, on which the strips pivot, corresponds to the pins 14 of FIG. 1.
The fixed length connecting member, in this case formed by a block of wood, shown at 25, pivots at one end 26 on the uprights of the main frame and is fixed at the other end 27 by hinges at the bedside. . As in the case of} figure the position of the various elements when the bedside table is used as an inclined backrest is shown in dotted lines.
For clarity, the tension spring is omitted in Figure 2, and the padding which preferably lines the front face of the bedside is omitted in both figures.
