Abstract

When transmitting television signals with a 4:3 picture format for reception on a standard receiver and additional information, which may consist of additional lateral picture portions produced in the transmitter, for a 16:9 picture format for reception on a receiver which decodes this picture format, the additional information in a PAL signal is modulated to the colour information present in the PAL signal in such a manner that spectral spaces of the colour information (U, V) are doubly occupied. Cross-talk from the recognizable picture content (ghost image) is prevented by additional scrambling of the additional information. Parts (32, 33, 34) of the PAL decoder in the 16:9 receiver can be used advantageously at the same time to demodulate the additional signals.
