Description

1 Electrical terminal device and electrical connection element for employment in an electrical terminal device The present invention relates to an electrical terminal device in accordance with the preamble of claim 1.
In particular, the invention relates to an electrical terminal device for the connection of electrical connector lines to an electronic operating apparatus for a lamp.
As a connection element for electrically connecting a connection line with the electronic operating apparatus there is known a terminal clamp which is built into its own injection moulded plastics housing as a clamp insert, whereby subsequently the complete arrangement is soldered on to a circuit board to be contacted. On the other hand, the electrical connection line is connected with the terminal clamp, so that the terminal clamp serves as connection element between the electrical connection line and the circuit board or the circuit sub-board.
Such a terminal device or such a connection element has, however, the disadvantage that the terminal clamp together with its plastics housing must be soldered on to the circuit board. The automatic mounting of such clamp inserts is thus very complex and therefore expensive. Further, the dimensional exactitude with soldered terminal clamps is not satisfactory, since inexactitudes arise due to the combination of several tolerance values which must be allowed for between the terminal clamps and the circuit board, and between the circuit board and the housing of the operating apparatus, and between the housing and the place of installation of the lights. Sufficiently high dimensional accuracy is, however, of great importance in particular for applications in which electronic operating apparatuses are to be automatically wired in a light.
A terminal device of the kind mentioned in the introduction is known for example from US-A-5,490,044. This publication discloses an electrical terminal device for connecting at least one electrical connection line with an electrical circuit board, the terminal device having a housing, connection means for electrically connecting the connection line with the electrical circuit board and retaining means for securing the electrical circuit board. The connection means include a terminal clamp which is bent C-shaped from a strip of electrically conductive material and retained in a corresponding receiving space in the housing. This terminal clamp is on the one hand contactable with the connection line, from the outside, by way of an opening formed in the housing, with the aid of a cutting clamp contact, and on the other hand automatically contacts the installed electrical circuit board.
According to the invention, there is provided an electrical terminal device for connecting at least one electrical connection line with an electrical circuit board, having a housing, and having connection means for the purpose of electrical connection of the connection line to an electrical circuit board, having retaining means for securing the electrical circuit board in the housing, the connection means including a terminal clamp, which is bent of a strip of electrically 20 conductive material and retained in the housing in a corresponding receiving space, and the terminal clamp being on the one hand contactable with the i:..°connection line, from the outside, through an opening formed in the housing and on the other hand contacting the electrical circuit board, wherein the terminal clamp forms a plug clamp contact for contacting the electrical connection line and ~25 is retained in the receiving space by press-fitting, and wherein terminal clamp is so bent from the strip that the one end of the strip forms, with a transitional region connecting the two ends of the strip, the plug clamp contact, and the other end of the strip automatically electrically contacts the electrical circuit board after installation thereof in the terminal device.
The invention therefore provides an electrical terminal device with which the p- lectrical connection or the electrical contact of the connection line with the Slectrical circuit board is facilitated.
C:\WINWORDUANELLESPECI\25078.DOC 2A Further, with regard to known terminal devices, the invention affords a simpler and cheaper manufacture of the device.
The invention also provides a use of an electric terminal device as described above, in an electronic operating apparatus for at least one lamp, for connecting at least one connection line with the electrical operating apparatus.
The configuration of the terminal device in accordance with the invention makes possible the installation of the terminal clamp in the housing before the installation of the electrical circuit board, so that after the installation of the electrical circuit board this is automatically contacted by means of a spring contact of one end of the terminal clamp, whereby the electrical connection is facilitated. Further the configuration of the terminal clamp, in accordance with the invention, in the form of a plug clamp contact, ensures a significantly lesser work effort for the contacting of the connection line than does, for example, a cutting clamp contact.
The reliable contacting of the connection line is further ensured by the terminal clamp retained in the receiving space by means of press-fitting, since with corresponding action of pressure the terminal clamp thus can no longer be displaced inwardly in the housing.
o a a a a 3 The subclaims indicate advantageous developments of the terminal device, and of the connection element, in accordance with the invention.
The invention will be described below in more detail with reference to the drawings, which show: Figs. 1 and 2 a first exemplary embodiment of the terminal device in accordance with the invention, whereby Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view along the line AA' of the terminal device illustrated in Fig. 2 and Fig. 2 shows from below the terminal device illustrated in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 and Figs.
4a 4c an exemplary embodiment of the connection element in accordance with the invention, Fig. 5 a second exemplary embodiment of the terminal device in accordance with the invention, in a cross-sectional view, and Fig. 6 a third exemplary embodiment of the terminal device in accordance with the invention, in a cross-sectional view.
Fig. 1 shows a first exemplary embodiment of the terminal device in accordance with the invention in a partial crosssectional view along the line AA' illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 shows the first exemplary embodiment from below.
In Fig. 1 there is illustrated an electrical terminal device for an electronic operating apparatus for lamps. The terminal device includes a housing consisting of a housing upper part 3 and a housing lower part 2, having a receiving space 9 for an electrical connection element 1. The connection element 1 is constituted as a terminal clamp or as a clamp insert and is placed in the corresponding receiving space 9 and held there preferably by means of press-fitting due to friction or adhesion. Equally, retention of the terminal clamp in the receiving space 9 with the aid of a screw connection is conceivable. The w a.

a *e r• o e terminal device has at least one opening 8 for the introduction of a connection wire 19.
The bent clamp insert 1 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is illustrated more closely in Fig. 3. Figs. 4a and 4b show the terminal clamp 1 un-bent, in the original strip form.
Fig. 4a shows the strip in a side view and Fig. 4b shows the strip in view from above. Fig. 4c shows the strip, of an electrically conductive material, illustrated in Fig.
4b, in a cross-sectional view along the line BB'.
The strip shown in Figs. 4a to 4c is so bent that the terminal clamp has the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
The terminal clamp is formed as a plug clamp having a plug clamp contact for a connecting wire. The connecting wire is thereby held between upturns 13 of a bearing surface 12, which connects the two ends 10 and 11 of the terminal claim 1, and the one end 11 of the terminal clamp, whereby this end 11 has a V-shaped punched-out part 14. The other end of the terminal clamp serves for contacting an electrical circuit unit 4 illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The circuit unit 4 may be in particular a circuit board of an electronic operating apparatus for lamps. It can be seen from Fig. 1 that the terminal clamp or the clamp insert 1 is so formed and so placed in the corresponding receiving space 9 of the housing 2, 3 that the free end 10 of the terminal clamp 1 automatically contacts a corresponding contact field of the circuit board 4, when this circuit board is placed in the housing of the terminal device. For this purpose, the free end 10 of the terminal clamp 1 is so bent that it lies upon the floor of the housing lower part 2 and electrically contacts the corresponding contact field or a corresponding conductor path of the circuit board, in sprung fashion.
Thus, without soldering, there is ensured an always reliable electrical contact of the circuit board 4.
Further, the contacting of the circuit board 4 is effected only upon the final installation of the electronic operating apparatus, i. e. automatically upon placement of the circuit board 4 in the housing of the terminal device.
As can be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, the terminal device has snap hooks or other retaining means 6 for holding and fixing the circuit board 4 in the housing lower part 2.
Further, there is provided an additional opening 7 in the housing 2, 3 which allows the introduction of an appropriate tool in order to release the clamp contact between the terminal clamp 1 and the connection wire 19.
For this purpose, with the tool, a pressure must be exercised on the one end 11 of the terminal clamp 1, in order to release again the clamped connecting wire.
Likewise, the terminal device for the housing lower part 2 has a recess 5 for receiving appropriate retention means e. g. a screw connection which connects the housing or the electronic operating apparatus with a light housing.
Fig. 2 shows that advantageously a plurality of clamping inserts or terminal clamps 1 are arranged one next to the other. Thus, in dependence upon need, i.e. in dependence upon the apparatus type, the desired number of poles can be selected at the time of final installation. Thereby, in dependence solely upon the chosen number of poles, the necessary number of terminal clamps or the clamp inserts 1 are placed into the corresponding receiving space 9 of the housing 2, 3 of the terminal device. The not needed receiving spaces remain free and are sufficiently narrow that it is not necessary to close off these spaces. As a result of this possibility of selection during the final installation of the electronic operating apparatus, the Sinstallation is significantly facilitated, since there is no need to pre-fabricate different kinds of terminal clamps for different apparatus types.
Fig. 5 shows a second exemplary embodiment of the invention in cross-sectional view. It can be seen from Fig. 5 that the plug clamp of the exemplary embodiment shown in Figs.
1 to 4 is replaced by a screw clamp 16. Through actuation of the screw, a connection line to be introduced through the opening 8 is clamped between the cheeks of the screw clamp and the actual contact spring 1. The contact spring 1 contacts in turn a corresponding contact field 15 of a circuit board 4 held by snap hook 6.
Finally, in Fig. 6 there is illustrated a third exemplary embodiment of the invention, whereby the terminal clamp 1 along with a plug clamp contact 17 in its lower region has a cutting clamp contact 18 in its upper region. In this manner, connection lines can be contacted in different ways or a plurality of connection lines can be simultaneously contacted. In other respects, the working of the terminal clamp 1 shown in Fig. 6 corresponds to the working of the above-described terminal clamps. In particular the free end of the terminal clamp 1 in turn provides a sprung electrical contact with the circuit board 4.
