Description

WO 01/08941 PCT/DEOO/02321 1 Device for user-specific enabling of a vehicle 5 Prior Art The invention relates to a device for the user-specific enabling of a vehicle according 10 to the type of the independent claims. An anti-theft system for a vehicle is known from DE 197 07 058 C1. The vehicle can be used only for a certain period of time with an operating key. Before the expiry of the period in which use is permitted, an enable signal must be generated, by means of which the period of use can be prolonged. This takes place by means of speech input. When the spoken keyword or 15 the speaker is recognised as authorised, the enable signal is generated. To generate this enable signal however, the speech reference number, on the basis of which the authorisation is checked, must already be stored in the vehicle. The object of the invention is to provide a user-specific antitheft system, which can be 20 adapted quickly to various user profiles. The object is achieved by means of the characteristics of the independent claim. Advantages of the invention 25 The device of the invention for user-specific enabling of vehicles has a first biometric data detection device, which detects user-specific biometric information as reference biometric information. The reference biometric information is relayed to a receiver in the vehicle. The reference biometrics information is stored in a memory. A second 30 biometric data detection device, which detects user-specific biometric information as actual biometric information is planned for the vehicle. A control arrangement compares the actual information with the reference biometric information and emits an enable signal to a component of the vehicle when the actual biometric information WO 01/08941 PCT/DEOO/02321 2 matches the reference biometrics information. By means of recourse to the biometric identification process such as the detection of fingerprints, the iris of the eye or speech, it is determined than only this person, demonstrated in this way as authorised, has the right to drive or have access to the vehicle. The proposed device makes 5 possible, in particular for car rental companies with frequently changing drivers, a simpler detection and storage of person specific recognition data and a guarantee that only the renter can operate the vehicle (liability, recovery of damages). Here the first biometric detection is installed, preferably permanently, by the rental company. By this means the reference biometric information is read in under the supervision of the 10 rental personnel and is relayed to the vehicle to be rented. In an advantageous further extension the transmission path is designed bidirectionally. By this means the input process of the reference biometry information can be monitored in the memory of the control arrangement, in that after successful reading 15 in an acknowledgment signal is transmitted back to the data processor of the first biometry detection device or the stored data is sent back to the first biometry data detection by means of checking for correctness. An advantageous design provides for the transmission of resource information. This 20 can be the permitted period of use, the route, etc. By this means the resource is clearly allocated in connection with the reference biometry information to the authorised user. The enable signal provided dependent on the comparison between reference biometric information and actual biometric information activates, for example, the opening procedure of a locking system or isolates a motor controlling 25 device necessary for operation, as long as the resource is not used. The biometric data detection can be used both as access authorisation and as driving authorisation. In the case of access authorisation, the second biometric data detection is to be arranged outside of the vehicle, preferably in the door handle. 30 Further advantageous further developments result from further independent claims and from the description.
WO 01/08941 PCT/DE00/02321 3 Drawing An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing and is described in some detail in the following. A block diagram of the embodiment is shown in Figure 1. 5 Description of the embodiment A first biometric data detection device 10 detects user-specific biometric information 10 as reference biometric information, which processes the permanent data processing 12. The reference biometric information is transmitted via an inductively operating antenna 17, to a transmitter/receiver 18 in the vehicle. The transmitter/receiver 18 exchanges data with a control arrangement 20, which comprises a memory 22. The reference biometric information is read into this memory 22. In or on the vehicle is a 15 second biometric data detection device 24, which detects user-specific biometrics information as actual biometrics information and relays it to the control 20. Dependent on the comparison of the actual biometrics information and the reference biometric information, the control arrangement 20 emits an enable signal to a component 26 necessary for operation. 20 The first biometric data detection device 10, the data processing device 12 and the first transceiver 14 are permanently installed at a car rental company. When a client would like to rent a vehicle, his user-specific biometric information is detected. This can be a fingerprint, an iris pattern or a speech signal. The data processing unit 12 25 assigns resource information to the detected reference biometric information, which is provided by the car rental company. The maximum permissible duration of use, the route allowed or similar serve as examples of resource information. Reference biometric information and resource information is transmitted via the first transceiver 14 and, here, a bidirectionally operated data line to the second transceiver 16. The 30 second transceiver 16 is arranged at a distance from the data processing unit 12 in the vicinity of the rental vehicle. The second transceiver 16 controls the bidirectional inductively operating antenna 17 designed, eg. as a loop, to transmit the reference biometric information and the resource information to the vehicle.
WO 01/08941 PCT/DE0O/02321 4 The transmitter/receiver 18 arranged in the vehicle receives the reference biometric information and the resource information and relays it further to the control arrangement 20. Both these data are stored in the memory 22. As soon as it is read 5 in, the control arrangement 20 causes the transmitter/receiver 18 to return an acknowledgment signal to the inductive antenna 17. This acknowledgment signal is returned to the data processing unit 12 via the transceiver 16 coupled to it and the bidirectionally designed data line. By this means the vehicle is prepared for the user, who has previously identified himself by means of the first biometric data detection 10 10. The reference biometric information stored in the memory 22 is used for drive authorisation and/or access authorisation. The second biometric data detection 24 is preferably arranged in the interior of the vehicle. In order to be able to operate the 15 vehicle the new user must have himself identified by means of the second biometric data detection detecting actual biometric information, which compares the control device 20 with the reference biometric information stored in the memory 22. In the case of a match, an enable signal is generated to a component 26 necessary for operation, such as a motor control device. The control arrangement 20 queries the 20 resource information also stored in the memory 22 anew with every start procedure as to whether the resource is not yet exhausted. The current kilometre reading or the date and time serve as examples of comparison parameters. Only when sufficient resources are present will the start process of the vehicle be made possible by means of the corresponding generation of the enable signal. 25 In an alternative design the biometric data detection 24 can be positioned outside the vehicle. If reference biometric information and actual biometric information match, the locking system of the vehicle is controlled in that it is unlocked. 30 A simpler design sees to it that the inductively operating antenna 17 is coupled with the first transceiver 14, so that the data line between the first transceiver 14 and the second transceiver 16 is superfluous as is the second transceiver 16 itself.
WO 01/08941 PCT/DEOO/02321 5 If the acknowledgment is dispensed with, the data line can be designed unidirectionally and the first transceiver 14 can be replaced by a pure data transmitter, the second transceiver 16 by a pure data receiver with a connected amplifier to operate the inductively operating antenna 17. 5 The exchange of data between the vehicle and the permanent biometric data detection / management can of course take place in other ways - eg. by means of radio, infrared or direct connection to eg. a diagnostic plug and socket connection of the vehicle. 10 15 20 25 30
