Abstract

Magnetic clamps used to secure Pilot Ladders to ship's hulls and having a roller and lever mechanism to assist deployment and removal are known art. Atypical example is the commonly used Pilot Ladder Magnet known as Yellow Mag II. A disadvantage of this lever/roller removal method is that the magnets are always 'on' or active necessitating care with handling so that injury to the user is avoided. With the advent of switchable permanent magnets, a safer and more convenient method can be devised provided that the switchable magnet with its internal moving parts and moisture-sensitive rare earth magnet elements can be rendered relatively waterproof. This innovation discloses a Switchable Permanent Pilot Ladder Magnet assembly which is resistant to the ingress of sea water and which also retains, whilst not limited to, a reasonable similitude in shape, style and colour to the above-mentioned Yellow Mag II. The plate through which the switchable permanent magnet is mounted for the aforementioned purpose of similitude also provides an extended footprint for the assembly to provide additional stability in use. Additionally the switchable permanent magnet is mounted somewhat flexibly within and through the aforementioned plate to ensure full face connection with the ship hull or other object when the magnet is turned on.

Brief Description of Drawings
Referring to FIG. 1Item A is a high-density polyethylene or other material plate into which is mounted
through a clearance hole through its thickness a switchable permanent magnet Item B using non
magnetic brackets Item C being secured to both the magnet body and the plate using bolts with rubber or other spring or absorbent material washers (not shown). The switchable magnet Item B is mounted
to the plate Item A to enable the bottom face of the magnet to be flush with the underside face item
D of the plate Item A. Item E is a flexible rubber or similar boot enclosing the magnet. A handle Item F
having an optional safety lanyard Item G is secured to the plate Item A for ease of handling. Items H
are at least one stainless steel eye or loop for tie-off to Pilot ladder or other item.

EDITORIAL NOTE 2021102331 THERE IS ONE PAGE OF CLAIMS ONLY Claims
1. A Switchable Permanent Magnetic Clamp assembly to be used for but not limited to securing
marine pilot ladders and accommodation ladders to a ship's hull by means of a stainless-steel
eye or loop attached to the said clamp.
2. A Switchable Permanent Magnetic Clamp assembly as described in Claim 1 and having at least
one switchable permanent magnet mechanism enclosed and sealed in a flexible boot of
material such as but not limited to rubber to render the magnet interior at least water
resistant.
3. A Switchable Permanent Magnetic Clamp assembly as described in the above Claims and
having the enclosed at least one Switchable Permanent Magnet mounted preferably
somewhat flexibly to a preferably but not limited to yellow high-density polyethylene plate
with typically brackets, bolts and rubber washers and with the switchable magnet passing
through a hole in the plate and secured as above so that the magnet face is flush with the
underside of the said plate so that the plate provides an overall larger footprint than that of
the switchable magnet itself.
4. A Switchable Permanent Magnetic Clamp assembly as described in the above Claims and
having adhering to or coated on the underside of the said plate a film of non-slip material such
as but not limited to rubber.
5. A Switchable Permanent Magnetic Clamp assembly as in the above Claims and having a handle
attached to the plate or alternatively to the switchable magnet for ease of carrying and an
optional safety retention lanyard with clip.
