Description

2020100035 08 Jan 2020
A MODULAR BED FRAME FOR SECURING ITEMS TECHNICAL FIELD [0001] The invention relates to a modular bed frame for securing items. In particular, the invention relates, but is not limited, to a modular bed frame having at least three modules for securing items.
BACKGROUND [0002] Any references to methods, apparatus or documents of the prior art are not to be taken as constituting any evidence or admission that they formed, or form, part of the common general knowledge.
[0003] Existing safes and strongboxes (and other secure lockable boxes) are useful for securing valuable objects against theft and damage from fire. However, in order to provide such security, safes must be constructed from strong and heavy materials (such as steel, for example). A significant problem with heavy metals is that, as the physical dimensions of the safe grow, the safe can become extremely heavy, resulting in logistical issues with regards to transport and installation. This has created limited mainstream adoption in the past for beds incorporating a security safe.
OBJECT [0004] It is an aim of this invention to provide a modular bed frame which overcomes or ameliorates one or more of the disadvantages or problems described above, or which at least provides a useful commercial alternative.
2020100035 08 Jan 2020 [0005] Other preferred objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS [0021] The preferred embodiments of the invention described herein include a modular bed frame having three or more modules.
[0022] In Figure 1, there is shown a first embodiment of a modular bed frame 10 having three modules for a single bed configuration. The modules take the form of a door module 100 centrally located between two end modules 110. Each module 100, 110 is bolted, or otherwise securely connected, to each adjacent module 100, 110 along an elongate side parallel to a longitudinal axis of each nodule 100, 110 such that the modules 100, 110 are arranged in a side-by-side configuration.
[0023] The door module 100 has an elongate, rectangular shaped body 101 defining a substantially hollow internal space for storage. The walls and floor of the internal space may be lined with a fireproof material, carpet or other soft material.
[0024] The door module 100 also includes a hinged, lockable door 102 that closes an opening 103 located on an upwardly facing portion 104 of the elongate, rectangular body 101. In the illustrated embodiment, the hinges 102a are located on an external surface of the body 101.
[0025] The door 102 of the door module 100, in a preferred embodiment (such as that shown in Figure 2), can include a lock, which may take the form of a digital keypad lock, a mechanical combination lock or a standard key lock, and a handle for actuating said door. In some embodiments, the lock may be installed in aperture 106 formed in the door 102.
[0026] The door module 100 further includes feet 105 for supporting the body 101. While only one foot at an end of the door module 100 is shown, it will be appreciated that a second foot is located at an opposite end of the door module 100 to provide
2020100035 08 Jan 2020 stable support. Furthermore, a third foot (not shown) may be located intermediate the first and second feet toward the centre of the door module 100.
[0027] Similar to the door module 100, each end module 110 is also defined by an elongate, rectangular body 111 defining a substantially hollow internal space. However, the end modules 110 have no door. The end modules 110 also include feet 112 which support the body 111 and elevate the body 111 above a resting surface, such as a floor. While only one foot at an end of the end module 110 is shown, it will be appreciated that a second foot is located at an opposite end of the end module 110 to provide stable support.
[0028] Adjacent side walls of each module 100, 110 include apertures which provide fluid communication between adjacent modules and creates a single, larger internal storage compartment spread across the multiple modules. As it will be appreciated, the door module includes apertures formed in both side walls while the end module only has apertures formed in one side wall, which abuts the door module when the modular bed frame is assembled. Advantageously, this increases total storage capacity of the modular bed frame.
[0029] The walls and floor of the internal space of the end modules 110 may also be lined with a fireproof material, carpet or other soft material.
[0030] An alternative embodiment of a modular bed frame 20 is shown in Figure 2. This embodiment is substantially similar to modular bed frame 10 shown in Figure 1 having a door module 200 and two end modules 210.
[0031] Door module 200 includes an elongate, rectangular shaped body 201 defining a substantially hollow internal space 201a (see Figure 3) for storage. The door module 200 also includes a hinged door 202 that closes an opening 203 located on an upwardly facing portion 204 of the elongate, rectangular body 201. The door 202
2020100035 08 Jan 2020 of the door module 200 includes a recessed combination lock 205 and a recessed handle 206 for actuating said door 202. The recessed combination lock 205 and handle 206 ensure these components do not interfere with a mattress that is placed on top of the modular bed frame 20.
[0032] In contrast to the modular bed frame 10, the hinges (not shown) of the door 202 are located internally to provide additional security. In particular, this provides improved security for the door module 200 as the hinges will not be accessible unless access to the internal storage compartment has already been granted or attained.
[0033] As shown, the door module 200 includes gas struts 202a which extend when the door 202 is open and ensure the door 202 does not slam shut.
[0034] The door module 200 does not include feet and thus the body 201 rests on the ground, in use.
[0035] Similar to the end modules 110 described above, each end module 210 is also defined by an elongate, rectangular body 211 defining a substantially hollow internal space. However, the end modules 200 have no door and no feet.
[0036] As can be seen in Figure 3, the door module 200 includes apertures 207 formed in both side walls 208. As it will be appreciated, end module 210 only has apertures formed in one side wall (not shown), which abuts the door module 200 when the modular bed frame 20 is assembled. Thus, adjacent side walls (such as side walls 208) of each module 200, 210 include apertures (such as apertures 207) which provide fluid communication between adjacent modules 200, 210. Advantageously, this increases total storage capacity of the modular bed frame 20.
[0037] Some further embodiments 40, 50, shown in Figures 4 and 5, respectively, include a third type of module, a middle module 120.
2020100035 08 Jan 2020 [0038] In an assembled form of one preferred embodiment of a modular bed frame 40(see Figure 4) includes five modules (for a queen bed configuration): two door modules 100, two end modules 110 and a middle module 120. The middle module 120 is located between two door modules 100 which, in turn, each adjoin an end module 110.
[0039] In an assembled form for another preferred embodiment of a modular bed frame 50 (see Figure 5) includes six modules (for a king bed configuration): two door modules 100, two end modules 110 and two middle modules 120. The middle modules 120, which are adjacent each other, are located between two door modules 110 which, in turn, each adjoin an end module 110.
[0040] The middle module 120 is defined by an elongate, rectangular body 121 having no door, similar to the end module 110. However, the middle module 120 also includes apertures (not shown) located on both side walls, similar to the door module 100. The middle modules 120 shown in Figures 4 and 5 also include feet 122, however, these are optional.
[0041] Similar to the door module 100 and the end module 110 described above, the walls and floor of the internal space of the middle module 120 may also be lined with a fireproof material, carpet or other soft material.
[0042] In use, a number of modules are connected together to form a base suitable for supporting a mattress. A user can then access the internal storage compartments of the modules through a door module (or multiple door modules) and the apertures formed in walls of adjacent modules.
[0043] Each of the modules described herein is preferably constructed from steel. However, the modules may be constructed from other, durable, but lighter
2020100035 08 Jan 2020 materials. Embodiments of the invention may also be constructed from fireproof materials.
[0044] In some further embodiments, an additional, lockable compartment may be located within the internal storage compartment of the door module. In an example, this additional, lockable compartment could be used to store ammunition alongside a firearm to comply with ammunition and firearm storage legislation that is enforced in some countries (such as Australia, for example). A gun rack may also be located or installed within the internal storage compartment.
[0045] While certain combinations of modules have been described, it will be appreciated that modules could be utilised in a large number of combinations. For example, an embodiment having six modules arranged in the following order - end module, door module, end module, end module, door module, end module - falls within the scope of the invention.
[0046] Embodiments of the invention described herein include feet for supporting the bed frame above a surface or as having no feet. However, it should be appreciated that some modules may also include wheels or other support mechanisms known in the art. Embodiments of the invention may also include means for bolting or otherwise securing the bed frame to the floor for increased security.
[0047] As noted above, a prominent problem for larger safes is that increased storage capacity necessarily comes with increased weight which introduces logistical issues. As the modular bed frame utilises a number of assemblable modules that are joined, these logistical issues (such as carrying, transport and installation) are largely mitigated as the complete storage unit can be transported in a number of modules and assembled on-site.
2020100035 08 Jan 2020 [0048] Advantageously, any number of modules can be combined to create a desired bed size. For example, while not shown, a double bed frame may be assembled using a combination of the modules described above.

Where the context permits, reference to an integer or a component or step (or the like) is not to be interpreted as being limited to only one of that integer, component, or step, but rather could be one or more of that integer, component, or step, etc.
[0050] The above detailed description of various embodiments of the present invention is provided for purposes of description to one of ordinary skill in the related art. It is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to a single disclosed embodiment. As mentioned above, numerous alternatives and variations to the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art of the above teaching.
