Description

ADHESIVE GENITAL PATCH
Technical Field [0001] The invention relates to a protective genital patch for a female, male or transgender user. More particularly, the invention relates to a genital patch 5 constructed from bio-organic materials to provide a discreet cover over the genital region, minimise the risk of irritation and damage to the skin and genitals of the user, and minimise environmental damage upon disposal post use.
Background Art [0002] The following discussion of the background art is intended to facilitate 10 an understanding of the present invention only. The discussion is not an acknowledgement or admission that any of the material referred to is or was part of the common general knowledge as at the priority date of the application.
[0003] For most people the genital area is a highly sensitive and private area that should be covered at all times. Ensuring the area is secure with light weight 15 material and the need for feeling fresh is highly desired by the general population. Discreet, light weight, easily removable options are not currently readily available on the market. When travelling long distances and the use of public bathrooms, being very confined with no showering options available (i.e aeroplanes), feeling fresh and providing a clean environment in the genital area 20 becomes a challenge. The use of sanitary wipes are often infused with perfumes and dyes that can cause the PH balance of the vaginal area to be affected causing irritation and infections.
[0004] While there a numerous underwear options, being discreet is rather difficult with the use of these items. Furthermore, the bottom clothing must be 25 completely removed in order to change these items, when in a confined cubicle this is not ideal. The present invention resolves everyday issues presented to females, males and the transgender population with the use of a one-step, onepiece and one-time wear device that is discreet in nature. This item can be removed and replaced without any item of clothing being removed and is easily discarded discreetly. The light weight and ultra-thin nature ensures a discreet look and feel.
[0005] The patch must be designed and manufactured with the consumer in mind. Limiting the amount of materials used per patch to ensure a transparent and non-complex product for consumers. The patch is designed to bring to the consumer world a product that is not readily available to purchase. The patch does not provide for an abundance of confusing choices with overly complex ingredients and materials rather a simple patch, with simple ingredient information conveyed on packaging for the consumers, with the most basic of knowledge, will understand their product materials.
Summary of the Invention [0006] The present invention provides a genital patch comprising:
inner surface of a patch comprises bamboo and corn fiber materials with a obround/round top section and v shaped rear end, with these areas divided for adhesive application to avoid adhesive contact within the sensitive genital area. The patch is adhered to the female user’s mons pubis and just above the anterior commissure for male/transgender users which extends down toward the perineum and/or buttocks of the user.
the outer surface of patch comprises any coloured materials more preferably black, brown and nude.
[0007] The inner patch surface preferably comprising soft, non-allergenic materials which are biodegradable and/or compostable upon disposal.
[0008] The inner patch surface layer of a soft, hypo-allergenic material preferably comprises at least one material in the group comprising: bamboo fibre, corn fibre, banana fibre, or organic cotton. At least one inner patch surface layer may further comprise activated charcoal or baking soda.
[0009] In a preferred embodiment, the genital patch of the invention is adhered to the skin of a user temporarily and may be replaced when desired, for example, when changing clothing or post use of spray tan.
[0010] There is provided a genital patch comprising: a patch comprising an inner surface, an outer surface and adhesive for attachment to wearer’s skin.
[0011] The present invention further provides a process of manufacturing a genital patch as described herein.
Brief Description of Drawings [0012] The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 4 is an illustration of strips inserted into a patch comprising activated charcoal or baking soda;
Figure 5 is an illustration of the top view of a patch;
Figure 6 is an illustration of the patch adhered to wearer; and
Figure 7 is an illustration of (A) magnetic glue applied to wearer’s skin, and (B) micro magnetic adhesive applied to the adhesive area of the patch.
Description of Preferred Embodiments [0013] The genital patch is designed to be used outside the menstrual cycle as it is not intended to provide absorbency cover or be water proof. If the user
2019101037 10 Sep 2019 comes into contact with water and/or fluids it is likely an immediate replacement is required. The very cost effective nature of the product allows the user to change as often as required without the great expense.
[0014] The patch surrounding the genital area comprises bio organic 5 properties that are easily applied and disposed of without multiple pieces or entering into the anus.
[0015] The fibers directly in contact with the genital area are critical to the invention and must not mix or comprise any pharmaceutical agents, deodorants, perfumes, dyes, talc powder, cosmetic agent, essential oils, man10 made anti-bacterial agents or the like. The use of any of these agents may render the patch non organic and must also not construe to the user that the patch is a medical device in anyway. The patch fibers may only comprise a strip ranging 4cm - 5cm in length and 1cm - 1.5cm in width with activated charcoal or baking soda. The strip must only contain one or the other and not to be mixed 15 together.
[0016] Furthermore, the patch fibers in contact with the genital area must preferably comprise bamboo and corn fibers. The inner surface patch fibers must not mix synthetic materials such as latex, silicon, nylon, spandex or the like. The inner surface top sheet must comprise bamboo and corn fibre and be 20 chlorine and dioxin bleach free. The patch must be ultra-thin for discreet wear.
The patch comprises 1 - 8 layers of fiber ranging from 0.5mm to 8.0mm in thickness.
[0017] Another very popular and also unregulated product is the spray tan. The use of spray tans is a popular and safer alternative to using sun beds or 25 sunbaking to attain a look of consistently tanned skin with minimal or, preferably, no tan lines. The main ingredient in many spray tans is dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which produces the colour of the tan. Other common ingredients in spray tans include alcohol, parabens, and artificial preservatives. DHA as used in spray tans is currently under investigation as to its safety due to common complaints 30 of skin irritations and rash, along with other health issues arising from use of these toxic chemical compounds directly onto the body. However, more spray
2019101037 10 Sep 2019 tanning products are becoming available that use organic and natural ingredients, and no toxic chemicals, artificial colourants or synthetic orange or green dyes.
[0018] Woman usually wear some form of underwear when having a spray tan applied to their body. The purpose of the patch, in addition to modesty when the tan is being applied, is to prevent spray tan entering inside the very sensitive vulva and vaginal and male genital area to avoid unwanted rashes or skin irritations inside the walls of the vagina. It also minimises the risk of the chemicals in the spray tan from contacting and altering the pH of the vaginal 10 area which can increase the growth of bacteria in the region. Disposable underwear of paper or cotton in the form of a G-string/thong is commonly used to minimise the amount of body surface that isn’t tanned. However, this underwear usually causes a tan line around most of the circumference of the waist and down the lower back towards the buttocks of the user which is 15 undesirable.
[0019] The spray tan industry targets mostly women and rarely considers men’s private genital area to be just as sensitive when exposed to high chemical treatments. All genders and ages seek to use spray tans at one time or another, the patch allows men to adequately protect their regions in the same way as 20 woman.
[0020] The removal of pubic hair in the genital area is very common with consistent advertising of painless laser removal for permanent hair reduction. The pubic hair acts as a barrier for preventing unwanted bacteria to enter the vaginal area, when removing the body’s natural ways of protecting the human 25 body this can present unwanted health issues, which may be unbeknown to the average female. The patch with the preferred ingredient of bamboo and corn fiber, acts as a protective layer that rests against the vaginal or male genital area. Bamboo’s natural anti-bacterial properties can help reduce the risk of bacteria and infection and therefore the material ingredients are critical to this 30 invention. The one time wear and disposal means no washing in synthetic detergents that further the risks of unwanted health issues.
2019101037 10 Sep 2019 [0021] The marquise diamond shaped patch can allow users who continue to wax, aids in the protection of the urethral, vagina opening and labium minus from hot wax and provides for a guide for the beautician as to which area can be waxed and which area be left untouched. The body adhesive allows for 5 adhesion where hair has not been removed.
[0022] Plastic Surgery, such as mummy makeovers and gender re-assignment are common in today’s society. The surgeon must mark out the section of body which generally includes abdomen and lower pelvic area. Most woman still consider the vaginal area to be a very private region that can be embarrassing 10 for anyone, including doctors, to view whilst being exposed in their presence.
The patch allows for discreet coverage of the vaginal area without interfering with marking out the patient or the need to remove or lower underwear. Pre and post- surgery, removable surgical underwear is commonly used. Post-surgery the patient is likely to experience a lot of discomfort, therefore bending down to 15 place on underwear is not ideal. The patch allows for minimal, if any, bending of the patient to apply to vaginal area. The patch can also be utilised during gender re-assignment procedures as a protective genital patch cover.
[0023] The present invention attempts to present a solution, at least in part, to the above disadvantages, by providing a gender neutral protective patch for use 20 outside the menstrual cycle which covers the genitalia, but avoid the lines and bulkiness and some materials with use of underwear and other products.

The invention also includes all of the steps, features, compositions and compounds referred to or indicated in the specification, individually or collectively and any and all combinations or any two or more of the steps or features.
[0025] The present invention is not to be limited in scope by the specific 30 embodiments described herein, which are intended for the purpose of
2019101037 10 Sep 2019 exemplification only. Functionally equivalent products, compositions and methods are clearly within the scope of the invention as described herein.
[0026] Throughout this specification, unless the context requires otherwise, the word comprise, or variations such as comprises or comprising, will be understood to imply the inclusion of a stated integer or group of integers but not the exclusion of any other integer or group of integers.
[0027] Other definitions for selected terms used herein may be found within the detailed description of the invention and apply throughout. Unless otherwise defined, all other scientific and technical terms used herein have the same 10 meaning as commonly understood to one of ordinary skill in the art to which the invention belongs.
[0028] Features of the invention will now be discussed with reference to the following preferred embodiments.
[0029] The genital patch 100 according to a preferred embodiment of the 15 invention is shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. The genital patch 100 comprises an outer surface 202 and inner surface 102 attached as one piece 204.
[0030] Figure 1 shows the patch outer surface 202 which is garment facing when in use by the wearer.
[0031] The patch 100 comprises a thin obround or round top end 101 with long 20 sides 110, and a substantially V-shaped cut portion at the patch rear end 114.
The inner patch surface 102 is between approximately 0.5 to 8.0mm thick.
[0032] The shape of the patch 100 is designed to attach to the body and skin of user with the rounded patch top end 101 in the region from the mons pubis and pubic region for males, along the length of and adjacent the labia majora 25 and overlay the scrotum for males, to end on the perineum just before the anus and end on the perineal raphe for males, therein surrounding and covering the pudendal cleft and entire male genital area. The purpose of the V-shaped cut portion at the rear end 114 is to avoid covering the anus with the patch and ensure ease of lifting for removal without the need for a tab. The patch ideally adheres to the wearer’s perineum or to the inside of the buttocks cheek, right or left will be dependent on the user. The patch is not designed to cover the anus area or extend past this region. The adhesive should not enter the anus for avoidance of contamination.
[0033] The patch 100 comprises adhesive 116 for attaching the patch 100 to the body and skin of the user. In the preferred embodiment, the adhesive 116 comprises a line of body-adhesive tape, preferably 100% acrylic or 100% silicon, other examples include Hollywood Fashion Tape®, foam fashion tape or a similar adhesive tape which is situated on the inner adhesive surface area 120 at the rounded/obround top end 101 of patch 100 and rear v shape 114.
[0034] Other types of suitable adhesives may be used for attaching the top surface 101 and rear surface 114 of the inner adhesive surface 120 to the user’s skin by relatively new methods using micro magnets with magnetic glue similar to the application method of false eyelashes. Preferably, a relatively thin diagonal strips of 100% acrylic or silicon adhesive is applied to the entire adhesive surface area 120 at the top end 101 and v shaped rear area 114 which is preferable for the invention as this can releasably attach to the skin of the user, only detaches when desired by the user with physical force, and minimises the chance of irritating the user’s skin the adhesive is in contact with.
[0035] Figure 5 shows the top view inclusive of measurements of the preferred embodiment. The top section shall be rounded or obround 101 measuring between 40-190mm B1. The overall patch measurement shall be between 200300mm H4. The inner surface patch 102 measures between 140-230mm P3. The top section 101 to top section of inner surface patch 206 measures between 20-60mm V2 with the bottom v shape 114 to the v shape of inner surface patch 108 measures 50-130mm K4.
[0036] Materials [0037] Selection of materials for construction of the genital patch of the invention inner surface 102 is very important and can comprise materials as described as follows.
[0038] Adhesives [0039] In the preferred embodiment as described above, the adhesive 116 comprises diagonal line or cross section of body-adhesive tape, for example Hollywood Fashion Tape®, foam fashion tape, magnetic glue with micro magnets or a similar adhesive tape which is situated on the inner adhesive surface area 120 at the top end 101 and Vshape rear 114 but more preferably 100% acrylic or silicon adhesive to be used. This adhesive has been proven to releasably attach to skin with no, or minimal residue left on the skin after removal. The adhesive tape is also hypoallergenic and shown to cause no damage or minimal damage to the user’s skin. This adhesive tape has the properties that is remains attached even in the presence of sweat and does not detach itself from the wearer. The tape also provides for flexibility of movement when adhering material to skin.
[0040] Other adhesives that may be used in the genital patch of the invention include 3M® adhesives for attaching to skin, including, 3M™ 2477P DoubleCoated TPE Silicone Acrylate Medical Tape, which is a breathable, hypoallergenic silicone-based adhesive for skin contact (and no rubber latex making it suitable for sensitive skin). 3M™ Kind Removal Silicone Tape may also be used with in the invention as it is also hypoallergenic, breathable, solvent free, and designed to minimise skin damage for wearers with fragile skin during wear and when adhesive is being removed.
[0041] Bamboo [0042] Naturally sourced bamboo is considered a ‘soft touch’ fibre and has beneficial attributes including its ability to control odour, which is assisted by micro-sized gaps between fibres. No chemical treatments are required to smoothen bamboo, and it is grown without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. One reason that pesticides are not commonly required is that bamboo is known to contain an anti-microbial substance called bamboo-kun which provides the plant a natural resistance to pest and fungi infestation, and can assist in reducing bacterial growth on the patch of the invention and avoid the associated odour.
[0043] The use of bamboo in the patch of the invention provides the user with a lower exposure to chemicals than when compared to other materials including standard cotton or nylon, and is more hygienic for the user with reduced odour and opportunity for bacterial and fungal growth.
[0044] Environmental benefits from using bamboo also include that the used product is completely biodegradable, and compostable. Moreover, no pesticide or fertilizer is required to grow the bamboo. In contrast, standard cotton accounts for approximately 24% of the world’s insecticide market and 11% of the sale of pesticides globally. A bamboo shoot, for example, of Moso bamboo which is commonly used to manufacture clothing, can reach full height in approximately 8-10 weeks, and it regenerates after being cut like other grass family members without the need for replanting. Its yield per hectare is approximately 3 times that of most tree species, and approximately 30 times that of cotton. Bamboo plants minimise CO2 generating more than a third more oxygen than equivalent stands of trees and have twice the water-efficiency of most trees.
[0045] Corn [0046] Corn fibres may be used in the patch of the invention which provides softness and therefore added comfort for the wearer. The corn fibres can be mixed with the bamboo which provides the additional softness characteristics and further reduces the potential for allergic reaction or associated itching, redness, or rash, with use. Corn fibres are biodegradable, and if incinerated, they are carbonised releasing no odour.
[0047] Banana Fibre [0048] Banana fibres may also be used in the patch of the invention. Extracted from the stem of a banana tree, banana fibre is traditionally discarded during the process of harvesting bananas. However, it is a very soft fibre to touch and is allergy free making it beneficial for use within the invention.
[0049] Banana fibre uses six times less water than in the production of cotton. Banana palms are already grown throughout the year for the fruit and thus extracting the fibre at the same time means no additional environmental effect, at minimal cost. Banana fibre is compostable and biodegrades in soil.
[0050] Organic Cotton [0051] Organic cotton may also be used in the patch of the invention. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and herbicides and thus produces less impact on the environment than non-organic grown cotton. It can provide additional softness for the invention where it contacts the user. While production of the organic cotton uses greater amounts of water than the other materials described herein, the organic cotton will biodegrade or be burnt without release of dioxin after disposal.
[0052] Activated Charcoal [0053] Activated charcoal may be used within the invention to assist with reducing odour and anti-bacterial properties, and is non-damaging on the environment if the invention is composted after disposal.
[0054] Baking soda [0055] Baking soda may be incorporated into the patch of the invention to assist with additional odour control.
[0056] Bioplastics [0057] Bioplastics may be used in the patch of the invention and in the packaging. As one example, Mater-Bi™ bioplastic is a completely biodegradable and compostable bioplastic comprising starch (non-genetically modified corn starch) and plant oil (from non-genetically modified corn starch), and no soya or palm oil.
[0058] An individual patch of the invention may also be wrapped in bioplastic for maintaining sterility, with a number of bioplastic-wrapped patches contained in a box or other packaging for consumer purchase.
2019101037 10 Sep 2019 [0059] The patch outer surface 202 may be in a variety of colours and patterns more preferably the standard colours to be readily available to the consumer are black, brown and nude. For example of available choices, a user may select a paper or cotton mixed with spandex backing in a skin tone colour or in a colour 5 to match clothing, for example, a skirt or dress, amongst others, to make the genital patch discreet in case of ‘accidental flashing’. However, as these surfaces do not rest against the body of the user, any likelihood of colour transfer to the skin of the user is minimised.
[0060] Release Paper [0061] Glassine Paper is a translucent, smooth glossy paper that is air, water and grease resistant. It is light weight and completely recyclable and biodegradable. The paper can be printed on to include colour or images with natural dyes that are non-toxic to humans. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, glassine paper is used in the packaging of patches of the invention, for example, instructions, company, and other information which may be contained within the box. It may also be used as backing paper which the patch may be attached to in the packaging and which the patch may be peeled from when it is to be used. Silicon Release paper can also be used for the outer surface of the patch.
[0062] Cardboard [0063] In a preferred embodiment, the product packaging, for example, box, for holding one or more patches of the invention for consumer purchase, is constructed from recyclable cardboard.
[0064] Individual genital patch may also be individually wrapped with, for 25 example, 100% recyclable paper or plastics. When the user unwraps the genital patch this will expose the patch inner surface and be ready for attachment by the user.
[0065] Materials that should be avoided in the construction of the genital patch inner surface of the invention include wood pulp, as dioxins can be produced 30 when bleaching wood pulps in their production which are highly toxic and can
2019101037 10 Sep 2019 produce reproductive and developmental problems, damage the immune system, interfere with hormones, and also cause cancer.
[0066] The genital patch in the preferred embodiment is for single use for the wearer and can be replaced at their discretion. It is constructed from materials 5 that cannot release chlorine compounds, and oxygen bleaching using hydrogen peroxide is used to remove any bacteria prior to packaging and use.
[0067] Embodiments of Different Combinations of Materials [0068] In a first embodiment of materials, the genital patch of the invention, comprises a sandwich of between approximately two and eight layers of com 10 fibres and bamboo fibres. The inner surface102 comprise com fibre and bamboo fibre which is naturally breathable, allergy free, and soft on the skin. The patch outer surface 202 comprises com starch-based bioplastic, for example, Mater-bi™ bioplastic with a sheet of glassine paper on top which can comprise colours and shapes or cotton mixed with minimal spandex for the 15 ability of stretching.
[0069] In a second embodiment of materials, the genital patch of the invention is similarly constructed to the first embodiment, except the sandwich of between approximately two and eight layers comprises banana fibres which are very soft to touch and allergy free.
[0070] In a third embodiment of materials, the genital patch of the invention is similarly constructed to the first embodiment, except the sandwich of between approximately two and eight layers comprises: (i) two to three layers of com fibre and bamboo fibre, (ii) a middle layer of activated charcoal for natural odour control, and (iii) two to three layers of com fibre and bamboo fibre.
[0071] In a fourth embodiment of materials, the genital patch of the invention is similarly constructed to the first embodiment, except the sandwich of between approximately two and eight layers comprises: (i) two to three layers of com fibre and bamboo fibre, (ii) a middle layer of baking soda for natural odour control, and (iii) two to three layers of com fibre and bamboo fibre.
2019101037 10 Sep 2019 [0072] In a fifth embodiment of materials, the genital patch of the invention is similarly constructed to the first embodiment, except the sandwich of between approximately two and eight layers comprises organic cotton.
[0073] In a sixth embodiment of materials, the genital patch of the invention is similarly constructed to the first embodiment, except the sandwich of between approximately two and eight layers comprises: (i) two to three layers of organic cotton, (ii) a middle layer of activated charcoal for natural odour control, and (iii) two to three layers of organic cotton.
[0074] In a seventh embodiment of materials, the genital patch of the invention 10 is similarly constructed to the first embodiment, except the sandwich of between approximately two and eight layers comprises: (i) two to three layers of organic cotton, (ii) a middle layer of baking soda for natural odour control, and (iii) two to three layers of organic cotton.
[0075] For the embodiments of materials comprising activated charcoal or 15 baking soda, the middle layer of activated charcoal/baking soda does not preferably extend to the edges of the layers of the patch inner surface as it is not desirable for activated charcoal to escape the patch and discolour the clothing or skin of the user. Instead, the activated charcoal/baking soda is located towards the centre of the inner surface, or just located in the centre 20 region of the inner surface 102. Alternatively, the activated charcoal/baking soda may be contained within a sachet or bag of material that is included between the other layers for ease of construction. The sachet or bag may be square, rectangular, obround, oval or another shape, amongst some examples.
[0076] In a preferred embodiment, the dimensions of the genital patch include: 25 40-190 mm distance from top end 101 to nearest edge of the long sides 110;
width of patch 100 is 40-190mm; length of inner surface 102 is 140-230mm; the distance from rear end 114 to rear of inner surface 108 is 50-130 mm; Overall patch length shall be between 200-300mm.
