Abstract
3. Abstract A wearable safety device that allows the wearer to remotely trigger an emergency stop function on an elevated work platform. Should the wearer identify a hazard or potential hazard and use this device, serious injuries or death may be prevented. The wearer pushes a button that is mounted on a watch or similar wearable device. This device transmits a wireless signal that is received by an emergency stop device mounted to an elevated work platform. The emergency stop device breaks the elevated work platform's electrical circuit, effectively stopping it from moving or conducting further operations. The emergency stop device can be reset when the hazard or potential hazard is removed and work can continue safely.
Description
Accidents happen on workplaces, sometimes causing death or serious injury. Despite years of improvements in regulations, equipment and training, we are still unable to prevent serious accidents from occurring.
This invention has been devised to assist in the ongoing effort to reduce preventable deaths and injuries in the workplace. It is the first invention to combine consumer and industrial grade electronics, wireless technology and wearable devices to create a means by which power can be cut to lift equipment in the event of an imminent accident.
Almost all elevated work platforms already have at least one emergency stop button that is physically attached to the platform. These buttons are typically attached to the base and/or the work platform itself. This hardwired and physically immovable design limits the ability of other people on site, who may be best placed to spot a potential hazard, to trigger the emergency stop function.
This invention has two primary components:
1.1 Wearable device (transmitter)
This is a device (such as a watch) that is worn on a person in a non-intrusive fashion. The device contains a button that, when pressed, triggers electronics in the device that transmits a wireless signal to the receiver. This wireless signal is a licensed signal using the appropriate band for Australian safety devices.
The image of a watch (Fig. 1) is intended to be illustrative only. This technology can be housed in a variety of wearable devices including but not limited to:
- Watches
- Keyrings
- Handheld or lanyard mounted switch.
1.2 Emergency stop device (receiver)
The emergency stop device is attached to the electrical circuit of an elevated work platform. An elevated work platform includes but is not limited to:
- Scissor lifts
- Boom lifts (including knuckle booms, straight booms and trailer mounted booms)
- Vertical lifts

- Spider lifts
- Telehandlers
- Personnel lifts
The emergency stop device appears as a small box, housed in an industrial strength plastic shell. It will connect to the same circuit that existing emergency stop buttons are connected to. The emergency stop device contains a wireless receiver that is synched with the wearable device.
1.3 Method of operation
The wearable device or multiple wearable devices are to be worn by a person or persons on a work site in proximity of where elevated work platforms are in operation.
Upon spotting a hazard or potential hazard, the person wearing the device will push the device's button. This triggers a wireless signal that is transmitted to the emergency stop device.
The emergency stop device will break the circuit of the elevated work platform, stopping it from being moved or operated.
Once the hazard or potential hazard is no longer a risk, the emergency stop device can be reset and the elevated work platform may continue to be used.
Person on the ground (Fig. 2,1) spots a potential hazard (Fig. 2,2) and pushes the button on their wearable device. This triggers a wireless signal (Fig. 2,3) that is sent to the emergency stop device(s) mounted on the elevated work platform, thereby avoiding injury or death.
