Description

P1255AUII 1 QUALIFICATION TRACKING FIELD This invention relates to tracking qualifications. BACKGROUND 5 There is a wide range of parameters that may characterise an individual's suitability for a particular task. By way of example, employers may consider a potential employee's length of work experience, type of work experience, courses completed, training certificates obtained and "tickets" etc. In Australia, tradesmen must obtain specific "tickets" for the various specific aspects of their work, e.g. there are separate tickets for 10 working from heights and for specific aspects of electrical wiring. "Qualifications" and similar terms as used herein take in all such parameters relevant to an individual's suitability for particular tasks. Keeping track of one's own qualifications can be difficult. A single tradesman might have as many as 30 tickets. Organising the tickets so that they may be produced when 15 required is a burden. Additionally, many qualifications require periodic action. The action might simply be paying a renewal fee. Some qualifications require periodic retraining such as "refresher courses". Performing a task without the appropriate qualification may result in a significant penalty such as a significant fine. Thus, losing track of one's qualifications can be expensive, 20 e.g. inadvertently allowing a qualification to lapse may lead to a significant fine. From an employer's perspective, these difficulties are compounded by having to track the qualifications of multiple employees. In Australia and elsewhere, employers are P1255AUII 2 responsible for ensuring that their employees are suitably qualified for the tasks that they perform, and again significant penalties may apply. At least preferred forms of various aspects of the invention aim to provide improvements in and for tracking qualifications. 5 It is not admitted that any of the information in this patent specification is common general knowledge, or that the person skilled in the art could be reasonably expected to ascertain or understand it, regard it as relevant or combine it in any way at the priority date. SUMMARY 10 One aspect of the invention provides a computer program configured to cause a mobile user interface (MUI) to guide a user to enter, into the MUI, one or more detail(s) of one or more qualifications of the user. "MUI" and variants of this term as used herein refer to devices capable of two way communication with a user and which are suited to be carried as one's (at least nearly) 15 constant companion. Typical MUIs are also mobile computing devices, although it is contemplated that variants of the invention may relate to devices that merely relay (i.e. do not compute) information. At the time of writing, Apple's T M Phone T M is an example of a popular MUI that is also a mobile computing device. The iPhone TM is an example of a mobile phone. Other mobile 20 phones are also suitable. No doubt, in the years to come new interfaces (potentially in the form of headwear, watches and implantable devices) will become popular. "MUI" and variants of this term as used herein take in such interfaces. Some variants of the program may be storable and executable on the MUI. By way of example, the program might be downloaded from the Internet. Other variants, referred to 25 herein as "remotely based variants", may be stored and executed on a host system P1255AUII 3 remote from the MUI, e.g. on an employer's server. Communication between the host system and the MUI may be via a telecommunications system. For example, one remotely based variant may guide a user to enter their details by sending a Short Message Service message (SMS) to a user, requesting details be sent by return SMS. 5 The communication may be via the Internet. Some remotely based variants might co operate with dedicated complementary software stored on the MUI. Variants of the invention may be stored in tangible, non-transitory form on a computer-readable medium such as a USB key. Preferably the detail(s) include at least one of 10 a date by which an action is required; and information sufficient to calculate the date; and the program is configured to cause the MUI to prompt the user in regard to the date. The program is preferably configured to cause the MUI to make the entered detail(s) electronically available to be remotely received. The making available may be or include 15 sending the detail(s). Some variants of the program are configured to cause the MUI to confirm to the user that the entered detail(s) has/have been authenticated, in response to an authentication signal from a remote source. The program may be configured to cause the MUI to convey to the user one or more details, of one or more qualifications of the user, received from a or the remote source. 20 For example, the MUI may be or include a graphical user interface (GUI), in which case the details may be so conveyed by being displayed. The entering detail(s) may include electronically capturing an image of a hard copy document. The program is preferably configured to cause text of an entered detail to be electronically recognised.
P1255AUII 4 The program may be configured to cause the MUI to convey to the user the entered detail(s). Again, the conveying may be graphically displaying. This aspect of the invention also provides a computer-readable medium carrying the program. A MUI, on which the program is stored and operable, is also provided. 5 Another aspect of the invention provides a method including guiding a user to enter, into a MUI, one or more detail(s) of one or more qualifications of the user. Whilst it is preferred that the guiding is or includes the MUI guiding, other variants are possible. For example the guiding may be guiding by providing a suitable instructional booklet. Preferably the detail(s) include at least one of 10 a date by which an action is required; and information sufficient to calculate the date; and the method includes the MUI prompting the user in regard to the date. The method may include making the entered detail(s) electronically available to be remotely received. 15 The method preferably includes confirming to the user that the entered detail(s) has/have been authenticated, in response to an authentication signal from a remote source. The method may include conveying to the user one or more details, of one or more qualifications of the user, received from a or the remote source. 20 The entering detail(s) preferably includes electronically capturing an image of a hard copy document. The method preferably includes electronically recognising text of an entered detail.
P1255AUII 5 Another aspect of the invention provides a method including a reviewer interface receiving detail(s) from MUI(s); and the reviewer interface conveying the detail(s) to a reviewer; wherein the detail(s) is/are detail(s) of one or more qualification(s) of one or more users; 5 and the detail(s) is/are detail(s) captured by each of the users entering their own of the detail(s) into their own of the MUIs. "Own" as used herein is not limited to the concept of ownership. Rather, the term is used in its broader sense to convey association. By way of example, in an organisation each 10 employee may be provided with their own MUI, albeit that the MUIs are in fact the property of the employer. Preferably the details include at least one of a date by which an action is required; and information sufficient to calculate the date; and 15 the method includes the reviewer interface prompting the reviewer in regard to the date. The method may include the reviewer authenticating one of the detail(s). Some variants of the method may include the reviewer entering, via the reviewer interface, details of a qualification of one of the users; and 20 electronically sending the reviewer-entered details to the MUI.
P1255AUII 6 Preferably the method includes the reviewer interface simultaneously conveying the qualifications of more than one of the users. This simultaneous conveyance may take the form of a graphical display such as a table. Rows of the table may correspond to individual ones of one of a) users and b) qualifications, whilst the columns of the table 5 correspond to individual ones of the other of a) and b). The method may include selecting a subset of the users, the subset being the more than one of the users. The method may include selecting a qualification, and the reviewer interface identifying user(s) having the selected qualification. 10 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS An embodiment of the apparatus will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 to 9 illustrate an employee's mobile user interface operating in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention; 15 Figures 10 to 21 illustrate an employer's mobile user interface operating in accordance with another embodiment of the invention; Figures 22 to 40 illustrate an employee's mobile user interface operating in accordance with another embodiment of the present invention; and Figures 41 to 63 illustrate an employer's mobile user interface operating in accordance 20 with another embodiment of the invention.
P1255AUII 7 DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS The following examples are intended to illustrate the scope of the invention and to enable reproduction and comparison. They are not intended to limit the scope of the disclosure in any way. 5 Figure 1 illustrates a MUI 10 in the form of an iPhone 5 TM including a touch screen 12 and a button 14 via which data may be entered into the MUI. In Figure 1, the MUI 10 is displaying a screen 16 including, in order from top to bottom, a logo 16a, a selectable icon 16b, a "welcome back" message 16c, a selectable icon 16d and editable data fields 16e. 10 To arrive at the display 16, a user of the MUI 10 selects an icon on the MUI's home screen (not shown). That icon graphically conveys, to the user, meaning associated with tracking qualifications, and thus guides the user towards screen 16 when tracking qualifications of interest. The logo 16a serves a dual purpose of branding the qualification tracking application (hereinafter "the app") and confirming to the user that 15 they are en route to tracking qualifications. The icon 16b is labelled "individual wallet" to convey to the user that this corresponds to a location in which the user's information is stored, in much the same way as hard copies of qualifications might be stored in one's physical wallet. Thus the icon 16b provides further guidance towards tracking one's own qualifications. 20 The editable data fields 16e include a field for the user's email address and a separate field for the user's password. If a user is not already logged in to the app, they will be prompted to provide this information when they select the "individual wallet" icon 16b. The icon 16d is labelled "sign in details" and leads to a menu system via which a user may change the email address and password required to log in to the app.
P1255AUII 8 Once a user has logged in, selecting the icon 16b leads to the screen 18. The screen 18 includes, in order from top to bottom, a logo 18a and selectable icons 18b to 18h respectively labelled "capture", "view", "edit", "manage", "email details", "SMS details" and "settings". 5 Selecting the icon 18b leads to data entry screen 20. The icon 18b is labelled "capture" to guide a user, interested in entering data, to select the icon 18b and in turn to the screen 20. The screen 20 includes, in order from top to bottom, logo 20a, selectable icon 20b, image field 20c, text field 20d and selectable icon 20e. Selectable icons 20f, 20g sit at the bottom of the screen. 10 Touching the icon 20b activates the MUI's camera and causes the screen 12 to display the output of that camera, along with a button. In a manner familiar to the person skilled in the art, in this camera mode the MUI may be manipulated to take in an image of a hard copy document detailing a qualification, then once the document is suitably framed, the button depressed to capture the image. Other image capturing modes are possible. 15 The icon 20b is labelled "capture new document/card", thus guiding the user towards the camera mode so that the details present in the hard copy qualification may be entered through the described mode of data capture. In the camera mode, pressing the button to capture the image returns the user to a modified variant of the screen 20 (not shown) in which the illustrated camera icon in the image field is replaced by a thumbnail image of 20 the captured qualification. At the same time, the text field 20d displays selected details of the qualification. In this case, the following details are displayed: * document / card title * name on document/card * date of issue 25 e date of expiry * supplier name e document identifier P1255AUII 9 * additional information * folder name (drop down box). The app creates an electronic filing system in which files are stored in folders. The folders may include: 5 1. "personal/private" for storing data that is not exportable or otherwise accessible to third parties; 2. "cards/tickets"; 3. "qualifications/certificates" 4. "resume"; 10 5. "work history"; 6. "employment cover letter"; and 7. "archive for storing expired cards and qualifications etc." It is contemplated that folders 2 and 3 would typically be used to store information captured via the icon 20b. On the other hand folders 4, 5 and 6 would typically be used 15 to store uploaded data files, e.g. MS Word files. These fields are populated by the MUI electronically recognising the characters in the captured image of the hard copy document, in combination with searching for preselected features within the image and/or electronically recognised text. The process of electronically recognising text is sometimes referred to as optical character 20 recognition (OCR) and will be familiar to the non-inventive app developer. The features searched for may be or include keywords, strings of keywords and/or graphic features. Preferred forms of the app are pre-programmed to recognise common hard copy qualification documents to aid in this electronic recognition process.
P1255AUII 10 Within the field 20d, the above details are displayed under the heading "translation of text", reflecting that the text of the hard copy document has been translated into a more ordered form. Preferred variants of the app are capable of electronically recognising multiple languages and translating into a single language. For example, if a particular 5 employee has three qualifications in French, English and German respectively, the app may be configured (via the "settings" icon 18h) so that the display field 20d is in English for all three qualifications. Once the details of the qualification have been entered in this way, the user reviews the field 20d for any data capture errors. If any errors are identified, they may be corrected 10 by touching the "edit translation of text" icon 20e. The icons 20f, 20g are respectively labelled "email details" and "SMS details" and are actuable to allow the user to quickly and easily send the entered details to any remote reviewer(s) of the information. The app stores 1) the captured image of the qualification and 2) the corrected details in the field 20d. 15 The described variant of the app, in contrast to other data entry facilitating programs, guides a user to enter the details of their qualifications. More specifically, users are so guided by the presentation of a series of appropriately labelled icons. Of course, labeling is not essential - other forms of guidance are possible. By way of example, the described labelled icons may be replaced by suitable unlabelled icons that include an 20 image sufficient to guide a user toward entering their details. On the other hand, iconless variants are also possible. By way of example, a user might be guided by a series of questions, e.g. in the simple SMS-based variant of the invention already mentioned. The app is also configured to cause the MUI 10 to display a keyboard, on its touch 25 screen 12, via which a user may key in details of their qualifications. The icon 18c is labelled "view" and leads to the screen 22. The screen 22 includes a logo 22a and user-selectable icons 22b to 22k. Icons 22c to 22k are respectively P1255AUII 11 labelled "licences", "cards", "viewer approvals", "due to expire", "certificates", "resume", "personal", "planned renewals" and "other". Pressing any one of these icons causes that icon to be selected. The selection of an icon is preferably conveyed to the user via the screen 22, e.g. by the icon changing colour. For example, if the licences icon 22c is 5 pressed, it may change colour relative to the other icons to confirm that it has been selected. Until one or more of the icons 22c to 22k have been selected, touching the icon 22b has no effect. Once a selection has been made, touching the "view" icon 22b causes details corresponding to the selection to be displayed, e.g. if the "licences" icon 22c is selected 10 the "view" icon 22b leads to a list (not shown) of all of the user's licences. Preferably each item in the list is selectable to lead to further detail of each licence in a format similar to the field 20d. Icons 22e, 22f and 22j (when followed by icon 22b) lead to a list of "viewer approvals", qualifications "due to expire" and "planned renewals". "Viewer approvals" is a list of entities (e.g. individuals) who may view the user's qualifications. 15 Potentially the viewer approvals also includes provisions for some entities to be given restricted access to the user's qualifications, i.e. access to only a selected some of the user's qualification details. The "due to expire" and "planned renewal" displays assist with managing one's qualifications and planning for expenses in the near future. Of course there may be a relevant distinction between the two lists if the user plans to allow 20 a qualification to expire. "Expire" is used herein to refer to a qualification ceasing to be in force, albeit that various qualification-issuing authorities may use other terms such as lapsing and ceasing etc. Icons 18d, 18e, 18f and 18g respectively lead to screens 24, 26, 28, 30. These screens operate in a manner akin to the screen 22 to enable a user to edit, manage, email and 25 SMS details of their qualifications. For example, screen 28 may be used to email details (including an image of a hard copy) of a qualification to a regulator when the user is required to demonstrate compliance with a training requirement. The app thus streamlines the necessary production of evidence.
P1255AUII 12 The icon 18h leads to the screen 32 via which background settings within the app may be controlled. By way of example, the period of time prior to an expiration deadline in which a qualification is considered due to expire may be varied. By way of example, the app may be configured to list qualifications as due to expire within any one of three, six 5 and 12 months of the qualifications' expiration dates. The app also provides a reminder function to remind users of a date by when action is required. These dates might be user-entered, e.g. if the hard copy of the qualification listed an expiration date or if a user simply types in the date. On the other hand, by way of example, a user might enter the issue date of a qualification in the same way and that 10 information may be sufficient to calculate an expiration date if the term of the qualification (i.e. the period between issuance and expiration) is known to the app. The term of a qualification might be entered by the user, although preferred forms of the app include pre-loaded terms for various qualifications. This reminder function serves to prompt the user in relation to the required action. 15 Preferably that prompting is in advance of a deadline. In this variant of the app, the warning period (i.e. how far in advance of the deadline a reminder is issued) is user adjustable via the settings option. The prompt from the reminder function may take a variety of forms, and the form of the reminder is preferably user-selectable. By way of example, an email may be sent to the 20 user and/or an SMS message. As noted, remotely based variants of the invention are possible although the described variant is stored and operates on the MUI 10. This minimises the need for communication with external devices and thus improves the operation of the device in remote areas where telecommunication is not possible or is intermittent. 25 Figure 10 illustrates a MUI 34, again in the form of an iPhone 5TM, operating in accordance with an app in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
P1255AUII 13 This app is for use by a reviewer, such as an employer or other manager interested in reviewing the details of qualifications of multiple MUI users. This app presents the reviewer with a screen 36 akin to the screen 16 and including (in place of icon 16b) icon 36a labelled "company wallet". The "company wallet" icon 36a 5 leads the reviewer to screen 38. This screen 38 includes logo 38a and icons 38b to 38k respectively labelled "add department/site", "add employee", "authorise access", "capture", "view", "edit", "manage", "email details", "SMS details" and "settings". The "add department/site" icon 38b leads to the screen 40. The screen 40 includes a logo 40a, and a title field 40b "add department/site" and selectable icons 40c to 40e. 10 The icon 40c is a text field displaying details of the site. Selecting the icon leads to a text entry facility via which the reviewer may type in details of the new site. These details may include a list of employees to be assigned to that site. The icons 40d, 40e allow details of the new site to be conveniently emailed or sent by SMS to other members of the organisation, which other members may be employee 15 users (e.g. to alert the users that they have been assigned to a new site) and/or other reviewers. The "add employee" icon 38c leads to the screen 42 via which details of new employees may be added. This screen 42 is similar to the screen 40 but also includes a "take employee photo" icon 42a selectable to engage the camera function of the MUI 34 to 20 take the photo of a new employee. The "authorised access" icon 38d leads to the screen 44 via which the access of employees to files, including the information within various company and individual wallets, may be accessed. The "capture" icon 38e leads to the screen 46 enabling a reviewer to enter details of an 25 employee's qualification(s). The screen 46 is akin to the screen 20 but also includes an P1255AUII 14 "upload a file to an employee" icon 46a selectable to transfer the reviewer-entered details to a user's individual wallet. This transference may take a variety of forms. Wireless communication is possible. The MUIs 10, 34 may directly communicate, for example by establishing a Bluetooth connection. Alternatively the wireless connection 5 may entail an intermediate telecommunications system. Wired communication is also possible. By way of example, company policy may dictate that employees periodically dock their MUIs, say at the start of each shift, to ensure that their individual wallets are updated. Preferred forms of the user MUI apps acknowledge receipt of the reviewer-entered 10 details. The screen 46 includes a display portion 46b to convey to the reviewer once this confirmation has been received. In the described variant of the app, this conveyance takes the form of an icon 46b which appears greyed out until the confirmation is received. The icon 46b is labelled "confirm addition to employee file". The "view" icon 38f leads to a screen 48 via which various details of various 15 qualifications may be viewed by the reviewer. Screen 48 is akin to the screen 22 and includes items 48a to 48k akin to items 22a to 22k. The icons 48c to 48k are respectively labelled "employee", "site", "view approvals", "due to expire", "department", "company docs", "expired", "planned renewals" and "other". Selecting the "employee" icon 48c (followed by the view icon 48b) leads the reviewer to 20 a screen via which the individual's qualifications can be reviewed. That other screen (not shown) is identical to the screen 22 save that the personal icon 22i is not selectable and is indicated as such by being greyed out. The screen 48 also allows selected subsets of the users to be selected via the "site" and "department" icons 48d, 48g. The "site" icon 48d leads the reviewer to a table in which 25 each row corresponds to an employee assigned to that site and each row corresponds to a respective qualification. In this way the reviewer quickly and easily gains an understanding of the qualifications available on that site. Of course the rows and columns could be reversed. This table enables the reviewer to efficiently assign P1255AUII 15 employees to the necessary tasks and also helps to quickly identify any missing qualifications so that training needs can be quickly identified and/or additional employees brought in if required. It is also contemplated that a table listing the employees actually present on the day be made available, allowing the reviewer to 5 better manage their workforce in the face of absenteeism. Potentially the presence of a worker on the site may be determined electronically by the presence of their MUI 10. This may entail activation of the MUI 10's geo-location functions and the MUI's location being made available to the MUI 34. The details of the user's qualifications conveyed to the screen 48 are retrieved from the 10 user MUIs 10. As in the communication discussed in respect of screen 46, various modes of communication are contemplated. The MUIs 10 may actively send the information to the MUI 34. Alternatively it may simply be available for retrieval when requested by the MUI 34. According to preferred variants of the reviewer app, the MUI 34 may be configured to 15 send to the MUI 10 a request specifically identifying the information sought by the reviewer. Preferred versions of the user app cause the MUI 10 to identify to the user the information that has been requested and to give the user the option of sending the requested information by making a simple user input without the user having to retrieve the requested information. By way of example the request may be presented to the user 20 as a list of requested information along with an icon that may be pressed (or swiped etc.) to release the requested information. It's also contemplated that the list items may be selectable (e.g. via pressing a check box icon next to each list item) whereby a user can select and/or deselect to control which information is released to the reviewer. It will be appreciated that the described app and method provide users with a convenient 25 means of tracking their individual qualifications and that the described reviewer app and method co-operates with the user MUIs 10 to enable reviewers to conveniently track the qualifications of multiple users. This has significant administration advantages for both the users and the reviewers, not the least of which is the avoidance of duplicated effort P1255AUII 16 because information entered by the users is made conveniently available to the reviewers. The described preferred forms of the invention also provide a convenient means by which evidence of qualification requirements may be provided to regulators, recruiters and/or prospective employers, e.g. via the described email functions. The 5 reviewer may be a regulator, a recruiter and/or a prospective employer. It is also contemplated that the training providers may provide apps in accordance with variants of the invention to employers (or other reviewers). By such training organisations having access to an organisation's company wallet, the trainer can proactively tailor their offerings to the organisation to the mutual benefit of the organisation and the training 10 provider. Variants of the invention are particularly suited to the occupational health and safety training market. The user MUI app may also have other functions added such as safety alerts, helpful hints, safe work method statements and log book inspection reports. Figures 22 to 63 illustrate further embodiments of the invention referred to herein as the 15 "V2 versions".
