Abstract

UNIKONNECTORtm: A Nylon composite moulded universal CONNECTION, LOCKING and ANCHORING device designed to assemble and allow for simple dis-assembly of LIGHT GAUGE STEEL structural members frames ground anchors and the like.

Description

EDITORIAL NOTE 2014203604 - The last page of the Description is blank, however all the figures have been accounted for in the body Original Complete specification 5 Applicant : David Upfal Title: UNIKONNECTOR TM A universal connection/locking and release device for light gauge steel structural members as it pertains (but not exclusively) to the modular construction industry. .0 Address for service: Hall and Thompson Lawyers : Suite 8 233 Cardigan St Carlton Victoria Australia 3053 Melbourne DX 366 Melbourne .5 Telephone +61 3 9670 0867 Facsimile +61 3 9670 4318 Email d 0 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best methods of performing it known to me/us Field of invention The present invention relates to a connection system for light gauge structural members for 25 example 'C' channels such that two facing channels are transformed into boxed columns or beams as particularly used in the construction industry. And as it particularly relates to the ease of disassembly most notably in the modular construction industry. However other applications in related fields such as office/shop fit-outs where significant strength enhancement and plaster replacement with the use of remove - able wall cassettes are 30 possible. Partial offsite construction modularity is also indicated as a potential application. The technical problem it solves relates to the issue of disassembly. Where light gauge steel is indicated as a preferred structural system modularity is enhanced if the panelised modules; either walls floors, roof systems or built up buildings can be disassembled and then reassembled with relative ease. This invention achieves that goal via the use of a nut and bolt fastening system. Background Art 5 There is a wide spectrum of junctional devices in use both metallic and non metallic in the construction industry. The range is more limited as they pertain to light gauge steel ( LGS). None are known to the inventor that achieve the claimed structural relationships in the way they are claimed. Summary of invention .0 This invention adds value to an established construction technology - cold formed light gauge steel structural members. C channels whether formerly used as purlins or joists can now be transformed into boxed sections of far higher tensile and compressive values. When panelised or in a variety of single or multi use configurations. The invention is shaped in a " X" or half "X" configuration (refer Fig 13) and is composed .5 of high strength lightweight nylon fibreglass or similar composite material. It is shaped to allow multiple connection points to the light gauge steel channels and once connected provides six (M8) screw bolt points of attachment for external members wall panels footing anchors other beams columns and the like. Spacing of devices is at 450mm centres or as directed by structural engineer. .0 Each face of the device is arched to provide maximum compressive force to the edge of the flange/web junction of the c channel when under tension to ensure a flush connection. Nuts can be inserted as shown (fig 7.2) to ensure full bolt tensioning capability. A half section version of the device can be situated in an opposing position of another member so that the two create a locking effect thus simulating the properties of an I beam. 25 Half and quarter versions provide anchor points for doors windows and miscellaneous inserts. Thus as can be appreciated there is a wide range of possible configurations or half (refer Fig 14 ) and full size versions in all three XY and Z axes whether 'boxed ' or in I beam variations. (refer Fig 10, 11,12) The dimensions of the device are indicative to 90mm C LGS channels but work equally well 30 with larger and smaller sections by enlargement or reduction of the device size in order to accommodate said section. The key attribute relates to the ease of release via a 13mm socket and therefore the particular application of this connection system to the modular building industry where issues of disassembly are paramount. 35 Brief description of dwgs: Fig 1-8 shows a typical embodiment where the device is connected to two C channels although as stated there are a variety of single double paired and non paired configurations. 5 Fig 9 shows a stand alone full version from multiple points of view including section views Description of preferred embodiments. The following detailed description of the invention refers to the accompanying dwgs (NOTE FIG AND SPECIFIC ARROW NUMBERS ARE WRITTEN AS FOLLOW: figl.2 THE .0 LATER NUMBER REFERS TO ARROW FOR THAT FIG.) Although the description includes exemplary embodiments other embodiments are possible as referred to above and changes may be made to the embodiments described without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Fig 1- 8 Show two preferred embodiments as follows: .5 Fig 1 shows direction or pathway of an M8 bolt Fig 2 shows a paired or boxed arrangement from above - this indicates the enlarged access point for insertion and tightening. Other access points can programmed in during manufacture of the LGS. Fig 3.7 shows dimpling to allow for flush surface to the connected LGS. 1O Fig 4 Refer above Fig3.7 Fig 5/6.3,4,5,6 show the egress points AND pathways for the M8 bolts. Fig 7.2 shows nut insert point Fig 8.6,9,10 shows M8 bolt pathways. Fig 9 shows a stand alone full version from multiple points of view including section views. 25 30 5 .0
