Abstract

AN AIRSTREAM DIVERTER FOR A GLAZING ASSEMBLY A glazing assembly (10) including a generally horizontal extending sill (11) that supports a horizontally movable panel (glass) (15), and a fixed panel (20). A diverter (19) is attached to the panel (15) to divert air and/or water back against the panel (20).

Description

AN AIRSTREAM DIVERTER FOR A GLAZING ASSEMBLY
FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to glazing assemblies and more particularly but not exclusively to glazing assemblies that use a sliding panel, such as a sliding door or window.
BACKGROUND
[0002] When sliding doors or windows are subjected to heavy wind loads, air can blow up through the sill and enter the interior of the building. A disadvantage of this is that this airstream can carry with it water that can overflow the sill causing product failure.
OBJECT
[0003] It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
SUMMARY
[0004] There is disclosed herein in combination: a glazing assembly including a sill, a first upwardly oriented panel fixed to the sill, the panel having an upwardly extending edge face, a second upwardly oriented panel, the second panel being mounted in the sill for movement longitudinally relative to the sill; and an airstream diverter secured to the upwardly extending edge face of the second panel and located in the sill, the diverter directing air and water, emerging from adjacent the second panel and sill, towards the first panel.
[0005] There is further disclosed herein an airstream diverter for a glazing assembly, the assembly including a sill with a profile providing a track along which the diverter moves, the diverter including: a generally upwardly extending end wall; a generally horizontally extending top wall; a generally upwardly extending side wall; a cavity at least partly surrounded by the end, top and side walls; and wherein the end wall has slots to accommodate the profde of a sill along which the diverter is to move, and the cavity has a first open end face opposite the end wall, and a second open end face opposite the side wall so that water entering the cavity via the first open face will exit the cavity via the second open face.
[0006] Preferably, the diverter includes a passage providing for a threaded fastener to pass through the diverter to provide for securing of the diverter to a generally upwardly oriented section of a sliding panel.
[0007] Preferably, the passage passes through the end wall.
[0008] Preferably, the diverter includes an open bottom face opposite the top wall to provide for entry of water through the bottom face, with the water also to exit via the second open face.
[0009] There is further disclosed herein in combination, a glazing assembly including: a generally horizontally oriented sill providing a longitudinally extending track; a panel slidably mounted in the track, the panel including a generally upwardly oriented section, a generally horizontally oriented section extending from a lower portion of the upwardly oriented section, a glass sheet fitted to the two sections; and the diverter described above, secured to the upwardly oriented section adjacent the horizontally oriented section and extending inwardly of the track.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS
[0010] Preferred forms of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: [0011] Figure 1 is a schematic isometric view of glazing assembly; [0012] Figure 2 is a further schematic isometric view of the glazing assembly of Figure 1; and [0013] Figure 3 is a still further isometric view of the glazing assembly of Figure 1.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
[0014] In the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a glazing assembly 10. In this embodiment the glazing assembly 10 is a “sliding” window assembly. However the assembly 10 may also be a door.
[0015] The assembly 10 includes a generally horizontally extending sill 11 that is supported on a generally horizontal surface (floor surface) 12. The sill 11 includes a horizontally extending track portion 13 providing a longitudinally extending track (slot) 14 within which there is movably mounted a panel 15. The panel 15 may be a window and would include a generally rectangular glass sheet 16 provided with a surrounding frame. The frame includes a pair of generally upwardly oriented sections 17 and a pair of horizontally oriented sections 18, the sections 17 and 18 provide a generally rectangular frame within which the glass sheet 16 is supported. The panel 15 slides horizontally along the track 14, and may include rollers 32 that support the panel 15.
[0016] Fixed to the lower end extremity of the section 17 (edge face), adjacent the junction of the section 17 with the section 18 is a diverter 19. The diverter 19 engages air emerging from the track 14, together with any water carried thereby back against the fixed panel 20. This inhibits water leaving the track 14.
[0017] The diverter 19 includes an end wall 21, a side wall 22, and a top wall 23. The end wall 21 is generally upwardly oriented, the side wall 22 generally upwardly oriented, and the top wall 23 generally horizontally oriented. The walls 21, 22 and 23 at least partly surround a cavity 24 into which the airstream (and with water) enters via an open face 25 of the diverter 19. The face 25 faces the section 17. The air (and any water therewith) exits via an open face 26 adjacent the section 27 of the panel 20. The face 25 is open and is opposite the wall 21.
[0018] The diverter 19 also includes an open bottom face 28 that extends from the end wall 21 and side wall 22, with the face 26 extending between the bottom face 28, side wall 22 and end wall 21. The face 25 extends between the bottom face 28, the top wall 23 and the end wall 21. The open bottom face 29 is opposite the top wall 23 and provides for entry of air and water through the bottom face again to exit via the face 26.
[0019] The end wall 21 has slots 29 that accommodate longitudinally extending flanges 30 of the track 14.
[0020] Preferably, the diverter 19 is moulded from plastics material. Preferably, the diverter 19 has a passage extending through the wall 21 to provide for a threaded fastener to engage the section 17. The passage (and threaded fastener) would be hidden via a cap 31 snap engaged with the wall 21.
[0021] The end wall 21 extends generally transverse relative to the longitudinal direction of extension of the track 14, the side wall 22 extends generally parallel to the longitudinal direction of extension of the track 14 while the top wall 23 is located in a plane generally parallel to the longitudinal direction of extension of the track 14, while having its major direction of extension transverse relative to the longitudinal direction of extension of the track 14. The face 26 is generally upwardly oriented and parallel to the longitudinal direction of extension of the track 14. The face 25 extends generally transverse relative to the longitudinal direction of extension of the track 14, while the bottom face 28 is located in the track 14.
