Fig. 6 A rear perspective view of a top box of a gaming machine fitted with the third embodiment of the peripheral display. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS 15 The present invention relates generally to a peripheral display for a gaming machine cabinet. As exemplified in Fig. 1, the cabinet 10 of a gaming machine (shown in full with dashed lines) typically has a top box 14 with a central display 12 for displaying, for example, gaming information or animations. In some cases there may be a topper device 16 that is on top of the top box 14 of the cabinet 10, and may act as an 20 advertisement for the game or games offered by the gaming machine. The peripheral display according to the present invention comprises (a) a display element extending beyond an outer surface of the cabinet, and (b) mounting means for mounting the display element on the cabinet, wherein the display element includes at least one side display portion extending beyond a side surface of the cabinet. 25 In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the display element includes two side display portions 18a and 18b, each extending beyond their respective side surfaces 20a and 20b of the cabinet. The side display portions may each be in the form of a display 5 panel. The mounting means include side brackets 22a and 22b, which mount the side display portions 18a and 18b, respectively, on the top box 14 of the cabinet 10. In another embodiment as shown in Fig. 2, the display element may include a top display portion 24 extending beyond the top surface 26 of the cabinet 10. As shown, 5 the top display portion 24 may be formed integrally with the side display portions 18a and 18b, forming a single display panel. The display element may be shaped and/or sized to fit at least partially around the top box 14. This embodiment may be suitable for installation on a gaming machine without a topper device. In another embodiment as shown in Fig. 3, the display element may include more than 10 one top display portion extending beyond the top surface 26 of the cabinet 10. In this embodiment, there are two display portions 24a and 24b. As shown, the top display portion 24a may be formed integrally with the side display portion 18a, forming a left display panel. Similarly the top display portion 24b may be formed integrally with side display portion 18b, forming a right display panel. The left and right display 15 panels may be separate for accommodating a narrow space between the topper device 16 and the top surface 26, or accommodating a support stand for supporting the topper device 16. The display element may be shaped and/or sized to fit at least partially around both the top box 14 and at least partially around the topper device 16. This embodiment may be suitable for installation on a gaming machine with a topper 20 device 16. As mentioned the display element may be in the form of one or more display panels. Ideally the display panels are backlit by light emitting diodes (hereinafter LED-backlit display panels). The use of LED-backlit display panels presents several advantages in comparison with other lighting technologies. The light weight and compactness of 25 LED-backlit display panels may mean less stringent requirements for mounting the display element on the cabinet. By taking up less footprint, LED-backlit display panels may also allow the peripheral display to make use of the limited space between neighbouring gaming machines in a bank of laterally spaced gaming machines, which is an arrangement typically found in a gaming establishment. 30 The display element is ideally shaped and/or sized such that it can be mounted on the cabinet of each of a bank of laterally spaced gaming machines. Fig. 4 illustrates a 6 partial view of a bank of three laterally spaced gaming machines, each fitted with the embodiment of the peripheral display shown in Fig. 3. The display elements are shaped and sized to avoid overlapping of the peripheral displays between neighbouring machines. In a gaming establishment, a bank of gaming machines are 5 typically spaced at approximately 30% of the width of the gaming machine cabinet. Therefore, in a bank of gaming machines each fitted with a peripheral display having two side display portions (one left and one right), the two side display portions should extend beyond the side surface of the cabinet by a maximum of approximately 15% of the width of the cabinet. Similarly, in a bank of gaming machines each fitted with a 10 peripheral display having only one side display portion (either left or right), the side display portion should extend beyond the side surface of the cabinet by a maximum of approximately 30% of the width of the cabinet. In another embodiment as shown in Fig. 5, the periphery display is similar to that shown in Fig. 2, except that the top edge 30 of the top display portion 28 at least 15 partially follows the contour or the shape of a topper device 16 in Fig. 3. The embodiment of peripheral display in Fig. 5 may be suitable for installation on a gaming machine whose neighbouring gaming machines are fitted with a topper device 16 and a peripheral display as shown in Fig. 3. This creates uniformity among a bank of gaming machines where only some gaming machines are fitted with a topper 20 device. Ideally the display element extends in a substantially vertical plane for attracting the attention of patrons. In all the embodiments described above, the display element extends substantially perpendicularly to the outer surface of the cabinet. This is made possible by use of right-angled brackets as the mounting means. As shown in Fig. 6, 25 the side bracket 22b is formed by a first portion 32 for supporting one of the side display portions 18b on the bracket 22b and a second portion 34 for supporting the bracket 22b on the cabinet. Any suitable fastening means (such as adhesives or screws) may be used to secure the display element on the mounting means and to secure the mounting means on the cabinet. 30 In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, the first portion 32 and the second portion 34 portion together form a right angled bracket 22b, which is strengthened by webs or gussets 36. As shown the first portion 32 supports a rear surface of the display 7 element, thereby concealing a substantial part of the bracket 22b when the display element is viewed from its front surface. A top bracket 38, in the form of a right angled bracket, may also be present for supporting the top portions 24a and 24b. The peripheral display may be shaped and/or sized to allow opening of the cabinet 5 having a service access panel hingedly opened with a horizontal axis. Now that several embodiments have been described, it should be apparent that the peripheral display according to the present invention has the following advantages: " The inclusion of side display portion creates a visual impact of the gaming machine, and attracts the attention of patrons. 10 e The peripheral display of different embodiments can be fitted on gaming machines with or without a topper device. " The use of LED-backlit display panels allows utilising the space between neighbouring gaming machines in a bank of laterally spaced gaming machines. It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or 15 modifications may be made to the invention as shown in the specific embodiments without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as broadly described. For example, the peripheral display may be shaped to be fitted on gaming machines with a non-rectangular-like top box. The top display portion or portions may fit substantially around the topper device, if any. The spacing between neighbouring gaming machines 20 in the bank of gaming machine may not necessary be approximately 30% and may vary, for example, between 25% and 35%, or even 20% and 40%, depending on factors such as floor space and layout, aesthetics or gaming regulations. Furthermore the side display portion may extend beyond the side surface of a cabinet by a corresponding amount to avoid overlapping of the peripheral displays between 25 neighbouring machines. The present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.
