Description

tP Australa 9 9 FEB 2004 Australia Patents Act 1990 Complete Specification for Standard Patent A personal alarm clock Associated Provisional Application 2002953180 The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me.
Applicant: Bernard McCormick Complete Specification for Standard Patent Associated Provisional Application 2002953180 Page 1 Background O Cycles of sleep follow regular predictable patterns.
ci The personal alarm clock utilizes the physical and physiological cues occurring during sleep to identify the best time to awaken a sleeper with regard to their sleep pattern. The personal alarm clock has applications ranging from shift workers to jetlag and for anyone wishing to maximize the 00 efficiency of their sleep and sleeping patterns. Research indicates that the REM state is the closest to that of waking consciousness and to be woken after REM (when a sleeper is briefly awake) is the easiest transition from _sleep to wakefulness, especially compared to waking from deep sleep.
Description The Personal alarm clock is defined as a device which estimates sleep state according to peaks in pulse rate and corresponding or coinciding peripheral body movement. This body movement occurs after the temporary muscular paralysis during REM sleep and is detected in order to awaken a sleeper after a REM stage of sleep.
As outlined in the accompanying drawing: The personal alarm clock consists of a unit containing: A clock. (Figure 1-E, Figure 3.) An alarm which is both audible and vibrating (as per a mobile phone).
A pulse rate monitor on the wrist to measure instantaneous pulse rate and peaks and troughs over time. (Figurel-A, Figure 2-D.) An accelerometer or similar motion-detecting device contained in the unit to measure peripheral body movement. (Figurel-F.) A central processing unit to co-ordinate the above functions to pinpoint the completion of a REM cycle. (Figure 1-B.) The alarm is set for an effective range of approximately 90 minutes (equivalent to one average sleep cycle). If the alarm is not activated during this predetermined period then the alarm will sound at the later of the two preset alarm times. (Figure 1-C).
