Radioemlgiangseinriehtung.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 8 vereinigt die Vorteile der Fig. 4 und 7.

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
EMI6.1
frequenz"bandes vorherrscht.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
EMI7.1

Radio equipment.
The invention relates to high frequency coupling systems (radio frequency coupling systems), in particular transformers, which are used in a high frequency amplifier (radio frequency amplifier) at
EMI1.1
effectively receive different frequency bands or wavelength bands.
To this end, the invention uses coupling transformers which have a multiple number of windings which are interrelated such that the various primary coils as a single primary coil and the various secondary coils as a single one
Secondary coils act over a given frequency band, but over another given frequency band only some of the primary and secondary coils act like a single transformer. Another feature of the invention is an improved frequency gain characteristic. which is achieved in that predetermined or calculated reactions are provided between the various coils.
Up to now, mostly three ways have been used to receive two or more widely spaced frequency bands or wavelength bands. The first and most obvious way is to use as many separate receivers or amplifiers as there are different bands to be received. The second way is to use a special transformer. which is specially designed for each particular frequency band, the various transformers being equipped with plug clips or plugs which, when plugged into a suitable plug board or socket, automatically make the desired electrical connections with the associated one. Manufacture apparatus.
The third way is to always arrange as many structurally separate transformers as there are different frequency bands to be received, and to switch the connections between the transformers and the associated apparatus using a suitable multi-way switch.
The main objection that can be raised against the former method is evidently that it is economically unfeasible since it requires the duplication of the equipment. The second and third methods have therefore been proposed in order to overcome this disadvantage of the first method.
The second arrangement, although satisfactory from an electrical point of view, is cumbersome and disadvantageous from the standpoint of handling because a transition from one frequency band to another requires opening the receiver box, removing one coil and engaging another coil. This handling is particularly undesirable when the arrangement is used in a multi-stage receiver, since in this case it is necessary to change or exchange a number of transformers, which operation results in a considerable delay in tuning. It is also common in this arrangement. that the reserve transformers, d. s. those transformers which are not currently used in the receiver are damaged or lost.
Finally, the construction and duplication of such "plug contact" transformers is necessarily expensive.
In the case of the third method, the use of two or more complete sets of transformers in the receiver is because of the extra space required and because of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
detrimental to the increased costs. Furthermore, all the holders proposed so far for such a device are complicated, expensive and subject to both electrical and mechanical malfunctions or errors. With multi-stage amplifiers, where high levels of amplification are required, these
EMI2.1
result in flowable feedback (regeneration) or vibrations.
The present invention not only deals with the design of high efficiency transformers whereby high gain can be achieved, but it also employs an electrical and mechanical structure that is simpler than has previously been the case for receiving a number of frequency bands was. A further advantage of the invention results from the design of the transformers by providing a uniform or approximately uniform gain over one or more
Frequency bands is achieved as desired.
The invention eliminates all the discussed disadvantages of the previous arrangements by providing a single transformer structure which can be permanently housed in the receiver or amplifier, but which contains at least as many groups of turns as there are frequency bands to be received, the transition from one frequency band to one others by short-circuiting one or more of the unused coils in each transformer or by opening this short-circuit, which z. B. at the
Secondary coil can happen, in which case the primary coils always remain switched on in their circuit.
Before the invention is described in more detail with the aid of the drawing, it should be pointed out that the invention is not restricted to use in tuned amplifier circuits, but can also be used with good success in non-tuned amplifiers. The invention can be applied not only to the use of the ordinary three-electrode tube, but also to the use of the four-electrode tube, which is commonly known as "protective or screen grid tube".
(The particular type of tube used is in no particular relation to the invention.) In the same way, the invention can be used as a coupling device in amplifiers which operate with or without neutralization, and it can also serve to couple an amplifier to an antenna Coupling of an electron tube with another. "Neutralization" means the neutralization of the capacitive coupling between two elements or electrodes of the vacuum tube including those of the connected wires; this neutralization reduces or eliminates the tendency to generate vibrations.
Fig. 1 of the drawing shows a simple, non-neutralized high frequency amplifier circuit (radio frequency amplifier circuit) which contains a coupling system according to the invention between electron tubes. Fig. 2 illustrates a similar, but slightly modified, circuit to Fig. 1. The arrangement of Fig. 3 is similar to that of Fig. 1, but differs in the addition of a "parallel anode feed" arrangement; this ensures that the anode current does not flow through the primary winding of the coupling transformer. FIG. 4 corresponds to FIG. 1 with the addition of an anode circuit neutralization; d. H. a third circuit is provided to neutralize the grid and anode coupling capacitance of the tube.
FIG. 5 corresponds to the modified embodiment of FIG. 2, but with the addition of an anode circuit neutralization. The arrangement of FIG. 6 is derived from that of FIGS. 4 and 5, but the anode circle neutralization of these figures is replaced by a grid circle neutralization. The circuit of FIG. 7 is a modification of that of FIG. 1 by which the gain-frequency curve is flattened. FIG. 7a approximately illustrates the gain-frequency curve achieved by the arrangement of FIG. Fig. 8 combines the advantages of Figs. 4 and 7. Fig. 9 corresponds to Fig. 4, but contains a different type of transition from one frequency band to another. Fig. 10 is a modification of Fig. 8 and includes a double switch

different frequency bands.
Fig. 12 shows a high frequency amplifier similar to one of Fig. 4. ' which is coupled to an amplifier system by a special system. Fig. 13 corresponds to Fig. 12 except for the fact that the antenna coupling system is more in line with the coupling system between electron tubes described above. Figure 14 illustrates the approximate frequency characteristics u of the antenna system of Figures 12 and 13 within the particular two frequency bands under consideration.
The circuit diagram of Fig. 1 represents a tuned high-frequency amplifier (radio

In their effect, these four windings form two transformers, the first of which, Li, Lg, is wound for a relatively lower inductance in order to cover a frequency band of higher frequency ("high frequency" band).

7 illustrates further modifications of FIG. 1, the "low frequency" primary winding L2 being deliberately loaded either by means of the distributed winding capacitance or by means of a capacitor connected to the winding so that the whole thing is at a predetermined value between the two Tuning frequency bands lying frequency is resonant.
(For the purposes of the present discussion, it may be assumed that the connection drawn in the figure above the capacitor C5 in dashed lines connects the anode battery B to the lower terminal of the inductance L2, i.e. that the additional resonant circuit C5, L5 is not connected.) The purpose of this modification is to provide an approximately horizontal gain-frequency curve within the high frequency tuning band. This result is achieved in that the individual coils of the entire transformer structure are arranged in such a way that the #Low frequency "primary winding L2 has a certain coupling with the #High frequency" secondary coil L3.
Since the coil L; ; has more turns than the coil L, the former can have a considerable electromagnetic coupling with the

frequency "band be resonant, for example at 450 kilocycles. The desired coupling states will then be such that the coupling between L1 and La at the higher frequencies of the

It goes without saying that it should be noted that the secondary coil L4 'is to be assumed to be short-circuited if the above states exist.
The graphical representation of the way in which these relationships change is shown in Fig. 7-11, which shows the gain-frequency curves in the following cases: when only coil L1 in the primary circuit acts (curve 1); if only L; and O2 act (curve 11); and when both coils cooperate in the improved manner (curve III). The upper curve III, which is practically a horizontal line between 500 and 1500 kilocycles (i.e. the "high frequency" band), shows that an almost constant gain (overall gain) is achieved over the entire range.
The above description of the operation of the circuit of FIG. 7 relates only to the "high frequency" band because the undesirable characteristics of amplifiers and coupling systems, as is well known, are usually more evident at the higher frequencies. If, however, it is desired that the "low frequency" band should also have an approximately horizontal, i.e. frequency-independent, gain in the overall range (overall gain), then the same principles can be applied.
To illustrate this, the primary coil Ls and the capacitor C5 connected to it have been added to the figure, and for the purposes of the explanation given here it will be assumed that they are connected to one another in the anode circuit of the amplifier tube Rai, which is the primary circuit of the coupling system , are turned on. It is assumed here that the dashed connection drawn above the capacitor Os in the figure has been omitted. To operate in the #low frequency band, switch S1 is opened. The inductance of coil L5 is made much larger than that of L2, and capacitance C5 has such a value that circuit C5. Ls is resonant at a frequency which is less than 150 kilograms, e.g.
B. at a frequency of 100 kilocycles. The coil Lg is then placed with respect to the coil L4 so that the coupling between Ls and L4 prevails at the lower frequencies of the "low frequency" band, whereas the coupling between L2 and L4 prevails at the higher frequencies of the #low frequency "band.
Although Fig. 7a is drawn in such a way that it only reproduces the relationships for the high frequency band, it can just as well be viewed as a representation of the type of amplification in the low frequency band just described, since the typical amplification-frequency characteristics of the two bands will be virtually identical if designed as described above.
It is clear that if more than two frequency bands are to be received, additional circles, corresponding to circles 05, L5, can be added so that the additional frequency bands produce uniform gain characteristics in the same way.

advantageous when used to couple tubes of the four-electrode or screen grid type. In this case, the size of the circuit (s) require some modification, depending on the internal impedance of the tubes used.
A further improvement in the gain characteristics of any of the switching arrangements discussed here can thereby be obtained. that a "parallel feed" of the type shown in FIG. 3 is used. This result, which leads approximately to the "overall range" characteristics of FIG. 7a, is achieved when the inductance and distributed capacitance of the Impedance Lx of Fig. 3 and the capacitance of the coupling or blocking capacitor Cs are dimensioned accordingly, all of which is explained in greater detail in British patent specification No. 273639.
The arrangement of this parallel feed circuit intended for the anode direct current creates various insulation problems, which would otherwise complicate the design of the coupling transformer, by keeping the anode direct current and voltage away from the coupling transformers. This eliminates the possibility of electrical breakdown or electrical disturbance, and the insulation need only be chosen in the design with regard to the spatial distance to be provided, which, as already stated, is of considerable importance to the present invention.
Fig. 8 is basically a repetition of Fig. 7, but with the difference that an anode circle neutralization of the grid-anode capacitance of the tube jdi has been added. In this example, however, the circuit C5, Ls in FIG. 7 has been omitted, and the "physical" capacitor O2 in FIG. 7 is replaced by the natural capacitance, which results in particular from the presence of the additional neutralization windings N1, N2 been.
It has already been stated. that in tuned high frequency amplifiers it is desirable, if not essential. that the grid-anode capacitance of the amplifier tubes is neutralized in order to ensure the stability of the direction. So far, however, the addition of the necessary neutralization weight has often increased; Brought caustic distributed capacities in the coupling transformer with it, which were themselves harmful again.
The interstage coupling transformers as provided in the embodiment of FIG. 8, however, are designed in such a way that the additional capacitance added by the neutralization voltage is used to advantage in that this capacitance replaces the added capacitance C2 of FIG. 7 and thereby the Gain characteristic of the amplifier improved in the manner described in the discussion of FIG. The capacitance C2 shown in broken lines in FIG. 8
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>

Bring connecting leads and the inherent anode-cathode capacitance of the vacuum tube, including the capacitance of the tube base.
The capacitance C3 indicated by the dashed lines is the effective capacitance resulting from the distributed capacitance between the primary winding Li, L2 and the neutralization winding N1, N2; it supplements C2 and consists mainly between the primary winding L2 and the neutralization winding N2. It is particularly advantageous to improve the gain characteristics of the "high frequency" band, because the gain within this band naturally decreases rapidly as the frequency decreases.
9 shows a modification of the circuit diagram of FIG. 4, in which, if operation within the "high frequency" band is desired, switch S1 is closed, whereby coil Lg is connected in parallel to coil L4. so that the inductance of the secondary system is reduced. These
The arrangement necessarily requires that the coil L4 have a greater inductance than in the arrangement in FIG. 4, since this coil must provide all the desired inductance when working within the low frequency band. The coil L3 can with may or may not be coupled to coil L4, and therefore its polarity may or may not be opposite with respect to L.
The circuit according to FIG. 10 is similar to that according to FIG. 4, except that the coils A'i and N2 are arranged reversed in the neutralization circuit and that the switch 81 short-circuits the neutralization circuit N2 and the secondary winding L4 at the same time. The effect of the short-circuit switch is therefore more complete than in the previous figures, where only the "low-frequency" secondary coil was short-circuited.
The purpose is of course, the primary winding L2, the neutral
EMI7.2
To achieve the desired short-circuiting of L2 and N2, but the switch SI can also be of simple mechanical and electrical construction because the switching arm is at ground potential.
This embodiment can advantageously be incorporated into any of the circuits where neutralizing coils are used, for example the circuit of Figs.
A favorable structural design of a coupling transformer designed according to the invention is shown in FIG. 11, which shows a section. From this figure it can be seen that the device contains an insulating tube 1 on which the various windings already described are wound and by which they are carried. The tube J 'has an outside diameter of approximately 32 mm and a length of approximately 89 mm.
In this construction, the "high-frequency" secondary winding La is wound in one layer on the upper part of the insulating tube, while the relatively smaller number of turns of the #high-frequency "neutralization winding N1 in one

wisely made of celluloid about 0'25 mm thick. These three windings thus form a complete "high frequency" transformer.
The low-frequency transformer is wound over it and is carried by the same insulating tube 1 in the lower part of the same. The low-frequency transformer also contains three turns, but here the neutralization winding is wound in one layer on the insulating tube, while the primary winding L2 is directly over the Neutralization winding

surrounds. As shown in Fig. 11, this "jug" can be shaped such that it is approximately equidistant from the windings of both transformers; d. H. the outline of the can can generally follow the average outline of the transformer windings. although the electrical effect does not change much if a constant diameter of the jug is chosen. The transformer structure can be fastened to the can by means of suitably arranged machine screws or rivets 6 and held at the necessary distance by spacers 3.
If necessary, similar screws and spacers can be provided at the upper end of the transformer, although they have not been shown in the figure. In order to constantly connect the various windings of the transformer with their associated circuits, clamping lugs 2 are provided around the inside of the insulating tube 1; The figure shows three pieces of these clamps.
To fix the entire transformer structure including the jug rigidly on a load-bearing switchboard or the like, is a flange anyway or a row of feet, in the drawing with? designated, provided. If the reception of more than two frequency or wavelength bands is required, additional windings (see Fig. 7) similar to those that have already been explained and described can be provided, in which case the insulating tube 1 is somewhat longer than in the drawing would be.
The particular transformer structure illustrated in FIG. 11 and described here as a mere exemplary embodiment of the invention was designed for use in a circuit according to FIGS. 4, 12 and 13 and was extremely useful in a coupling system which was tunable within the two frequency bands mentioned at the beginning successfully.
The transformers, when used in conjunction with a vacuum tube of 4 # 5 F grid anode capacity and a mutual conductance of 1000 milli-mhos, had the following sizes:

The circuit arrangement of Fig. 12 is similar to the arrangement of Fig. 4 as far as it relates to the coupling system between the tubes 11 and 12. In the case of Fig. 12, however, an antenna system with the first #high frequency " amplifier tube A1 (as in a Radio receiver) coupled by a coupling system which is based on the principle of the antenna coupling system, which is described in the American patent application series No. 3515 of May 16, 929.
This antenna coupling system is designed with a relatively loose coupling between the primary side L6 and the secondary side L7, so that a change in the antenna capacitance only has a negligible effect on the first tuned input circuit, so that a simultaneous setting of the various tuning capacitors is possible; moreover, the antenna coupling system has a gain curve, the slope of which is essentially the opposite of that of the curve of the coupling system between the tubes. For this purpose the antenna inductance L6 must have such a value that with the usual antenna capacitance the reactance will always be inductive within the "high frequency" band.
In the present case, for example

in a fixed antenna circuit to which an amplifier is connected which covers two different frequency bands is particularly advantageous because the antenna circuit can be designed for a resonant frequency. which lies between the two bands, but is not contained in either of the two bands, so that the gain in both bands is maintained at a consistently high value. The operation of this circuit will be discussed further in connection with FIG.
The circuit arrangement of FIG. 13 is similar to the arrangement of FIG. 12 with regard to the coupling system between the tubes, but differs from it with regard to the antenna coupling system.
In Figure 13, the antenna coupling system is more in accordance with the coupling system provided between the tubes. In contrast to the antenna circuit of FIG. 12, this is the present one

from. The arrangement therefore does not lead to the characteristics of the antenna coupling system of FIG. 12, but generally to the characteristics valid in the "low frequency" band of the arrangement according to FIG. 12. In other words: the "low frequency" band curve of FIG FIG. 13 is a good representation of the curves of both bands in the antenna coupling system of FIG.
If, for some reason, such a characteristic is not desired, the final or overall characteristic can be changed by combining the corrective measures described above in connection with FIGS. 3, 7 and 8. In Fig. 13, a short-circuit switch S "for the #Low Frequency" primary winding L9 is provided, since the impedance of this coil is im. The high-frequency band could be too high to be effectively short-circuited by closing the secondary switch S '. It should be noted that the switches provided in the circuit of FIGS. 12 and 13 can be constructed in a structurally simple and electrically effective manner - for example in Fig. 10- because all switch arms are at ground potential.
The curves of FIG. 14 illustrate in particular the approximate gain-frequency characteristics of the antenna coupling system of FIG. 12, and the like. Between curve IV for the low frequency band, curve V for the high frequency band. Since the antenna circuit is resonant at a frequency between 300 and 500 kilocycles, the highest points of the two gain curves correspond to these two operating frequencies which are closest to the resonance frequency of the antenna circuit.
The two gain curves have their lowest points at 150 and 1500 kilocycles. the operating frequencies furthest away from the resonance frequency of the antenna circuit, but the gain at all frequencies within the two operating frequency bands is still sufficiently large.
This latter result is achieved very well by the antenna circuit of FIG.
