본 발명은, 복수 개의 배터리 셀을 포함하는 복수 개의 배터리 모듈; 상기 복수 개의 배터리 모듈을 수용하도록 구성되는 수용 공간이 형성되는 팩 케이스; 상기 배터리 모듈과 상기 팩 케이스 사이에 구비되며, 상기 배터리 셀로부터 배출되는 벤팅 가스가 통과하도록 관통홀이 형성된 커버 부재; 및 상기 커버 부재에 장착되어 상기 커버 부재와 상기 팩 케이스 사이의 간격을 유지시키도록 구성되는 스페이서를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩에 관한 것이다.

Description

배터리 팩 및 이를 포함하는 자동차
본 발명은 배터리 팩 및 이를 포함하는 자동차에 관한 것이다.
본 출원은, 2024년07월17일자로 출원된 한국 특허출원 번호 제 10-2024-0094381호에 대한 우선권주장출원으로서, 해당 출원의 명세서 및 도면에 개시된 모든 내용은 인용에 의해 본 출원에 원용된다.
제품 군에 따른 적용 용이성이 높고, 높은 에너지 밀도 등의 전기적 특성을 가지는 이차 전지는 휴대용 기기뿐만 아니라 전기적 구동원에 의하여 구동하는 전기차량(EV, Electric Vehicle) 또는 하이브리드 차량(HEV, Hybrid Electric Vehicle) 등에 보편적으로 응용되고 있다. 이러한 이차 전지는 화석 연료의 사용을 획기적으로 감소시킬 수 있다는 일차적인 장점뿐만 아니라 에너지의 사용에 따른 부산물이 전혀 발생되지 않는다는 점에서 친환경 및 에너지 효율성 제고를 위한 새로운 에너지원으로 주목받고 있다.
현재 널리 사용되는 이차 전지의 종류에는 리튬 이온 전지, 리튬 폴리머 전지, 니켈 카드뮴 전지, 니켈 수소 전지, 니켈 아연 전지 등이 있다. 이러한 단위 이차 전지 셀, 즉, 단위 배터리 셀의 작동 전압은 약 2.5V ~ 4.5V이다. 따라서, 이보다 더 높은 출력 전압이 요구될 경우, 복수 개의 배터리 셀을 직렬로 연결하여 배터리 팩을 구성하기도 한다. 또한, 배터리 팩에 요구되는 충방전 용량에 따라 다수의 배터리 셀을 병렬 연결하여 배터리 팩을 구성하기도 한다. 따라서, 상기 배터리 팩에 포함되는 배터리 셀의 개수는 요구되는 출력 전압 또는 충방전 용량에 따라 다양하게 설정될 수 있다.
한편, 복수 개의 배터리 셀을 직렬/병렬로 연결하여 배터리 팩을 구성할 경우, 적어도 하나의 배터리 셀을 포함하는 배터리 모듈을 먼저 구성하고, 이러한 적어도 하나의 배터리 모듈을 이용하여 기타 구성요소를 추가하여 배터리 팩이나 배터리 랙을 구성하는 방법이 일반적이다. 또는, 최근에는, 복수 개의 배터리 셀을 모듈화하지 않고, 팩 하우징 등에 직접 수납하는 셀투팩(Cell To Pack) 형태의 배터리 팩도 제조되고 있다.
한편, 배터리 셀은 충방전 시 화학 반응을 수반하기 때문에 적정 온도보다 높은 환경에서 사용되는 경우 성능이 저하될 수 있고, 적정 온도로 열제어가 되지 못할 경우 예기치 못하게 발화나 폭발 가능성이 상존한다. 따라서, 배터리 팩 내부에서 열 폭주(thermal runaway)와 같은 열적 이벤트가 발생하는 경우, 내부에 포함된 배터리 셀에서 분출되는 고온의 가스나 화염 등이 인접한 배터리 셀들로 전이되어 연쇄적인 배터리 셀의 폭발을 초래할 수 있기 때문에 매우 위험하다.
특히, 배터리 팩 내부에서 열 폭주(thermal runaway)와 같은 열적 이벤트가 발생하는 경우, 내부에 포함된 배터리 셀에서 가스가 분출될 수 있으며, 이러한 가스에는 화염 등이 포함될 수 있다.
또한, 일반적으로 배터리 셀에서 가스가 분출될 때에 배터리 셀 내부의 전극판 조각이나 활물질 조각 등이 고온으로 가열된 상태에서 외부로 배출될 수 있는데, 이러한 고온의 파티클은 스파크(spark)와 같은 형태로 나타날 수 있다.
이때, 스파크가 가스와 함께 노출되면 산소와 반응하여, 배터리 팩 내부 또는 외부에서 화염이 생성되거나 화재로 발달될 수 있다. 더욱이, 특정 배터리 팩에서 화염이나 화재 등이 발생하면, 이는 인접한 다른 배터리 팩이나 해당 배터리 팩이 장착된 장치로 화재 등이 확산되어, 보다 큰 문제를 야기할 수 있다.
따라서, 배터리 셀의 열 폭주 발생 시, 스파크나 화염 등이 사방으로 향하는 것을 방지하여 배터리 팩에서 화염이나 화재가 발생 내지 확산되는 것을 억제하기 위한 기술의 필요성이 있다.
또한, 배터리 셀의 열 폭주 발생 시, 배터리 셀에서 발생된 고온의 가스를 분산 배출시켜 배터리 팩 내부의 열 축적을 방지할 수 있는 구조가 개발될 필요성이 있다.
따라서, 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는, 배터리 셀의 열 폭주 발생 시, 인접하는 배터리 셀이 받는 열 에너지를 최소화함으로써 배터리 셀 간 열 폭주 전파를 방지 내지 억제하여 안전성과 신뢰성이 향상된 배터리 팩을 제공하는 것이다.
또한, 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 또 다른 과제는, 이러한 배터리 팩을 포함하는 자동차를 제공하는 것이다.
다만, 본 발명이 해결하고자 하는 과제는 상술한 과제에 제한되지 않으며, 언급되지 않은 다른 과제들은 아래에 기재된 발명의 설명으로부터 당업자에게 명확하게 이해될 수 있을 것이다.
상기 과제를 해결하기 위해, 본 발명은, 복수 개의 배터리 셀을 포함하는 복수 개의 배터리 모듈; 상기 복수 개의 배터리 모듈을 수용하도록 구성되는 수용 공간이 형성되는 팩 케이스; 상기 배터리 모듈과 상기 팩 케이스 사이에 구비되며, 상기 배터리 셀로부터 배출되는 벤팅 가스가 통과하도록 관통홀이 형성된 커버 부재; 및 상기 커버 부재에 장착되어 상기 커버 부재와 상기 팩 케이스 사이의 간격을 유지시키도록 구성되는 스페이서를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩을 제공한다.
상기 커버 부재는 상기 배터리 모듈의 상부를 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다.
상기 팩 케이스는 복수 개의 수용 공간을 구비하고, 상기 커버 부재는 적어도 일부의 수용 공간을 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다.
상기 커버 부재는 복수 개 구비되어 상기 복수 개의 수용 공간 중 적어도 일부에 개별적으로 구비될 수 있다.
상기 팩 케이스는 상기 복수 개의 배터리 모듈을 구획하도록 구성되는 크로스 빔을 구비하고, 상기 커버 부재는 상기 크로스 빔에 안착되도록 구성될 수 있다.
상기 관통홀은 복수 개 구비되어 소정 간격으로 이격되어 배치될 수 있다.
상기 스페이서는 복수 개의 상기 관통홀 중 적어도 일부에 삽입되도록 구성될 수 있다.
상기 배터리 모듈은 상기 복수 개의 배터리 셀을 그룹핑하도록 구성되고, 일측면에 상기 벤팅 가스를 외부로 배출시키도록 구성되는 벤팅홀이 형성되는 모듈 케이스를 포함할 수 있다.
상기 스페이서는 상기 벤팅홀과 엇갈리는 위치에 구비될 수 있다.
상기 스페이서는 상기 커버 부재와 상기 팩 케이스 사이에 구비되는 제1 부분을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 스페이서는 상기 커버 부재와 상기 배터리 셀 사이에 구비되는 제2 부분을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 스페이서는 상기 관통홀의 크기보다 크게 구성될 수 있다.
그리고, 본 발명은, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 팩을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 자동차를 제공한다.
본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 배터리 셀의 이상 상황 시 생성되는 스파크가 사방으로 향하는 것을 방지하여 안전성과 신뢰성을 보장할 수 있다.
더욱이, 본 발명의 일 측면에 의하면, 배터리 팩에서 화염 발달 억제를 통해, 팩 단위 열 전파(Thermal Propagation) 방지 성능이 효과적으로 확보될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 배터리 셀과 커버 부재 사이의 공간이 확보되어 고온의 가스나 화염 등을 신속하게 배터리 팩의 외부로 배출시킬 수 있으므로, 배터리 팩 내부의 열 축적이 해소될 수 있다. 이로써, 배터리 셀 간 열 폭주 전파가 효과적으로 방지되거나 지연될 수 있다.
특히, 본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 배터리 셀의 이상 상황 시 배터리 셀에서 생성되는 고온의 가스나 화염 등이 분산 배출되어 배터리 팩의 특정 부분에 열이 집중되는 것이 억제될 수 있다.
이로써, 본 발명의 일 측면에 따르면, 배터리 팩이 장착된 장치의 열 폭주 현상에 따른 이벤트, 이를테면 화재나 폭발 등을 방지하거나 지연시킬 수 있다.
이 밖에도 본 발명은 여러 다른 효과를 가질 수 있으며, 이에 대해서는 각 실시 구성에서 설명하거나, 당업자가 용이하게 유추할 수 있는 효과 등에 대해서는 해당 설명을 생략하도록 한다.
본 명세서에 첨부되는 다음의 도면들은 본 발명의 바람직한 실시예를 예시하는 것이며, 후술되는 발명의 상세한 설명과 함께 본 발명의 기술사상을 더욱 이해시키는 역할을 하는 것이므로, 본 발명은 그러한 도면에 기재된 사항에만 한정되어 해석되어서는 아니된다.

예를 들어, 본 발명의 실시예에서, 도면에 도시된 X축 방향은 전후 방향, Y축 방향은 X축 방향과 수평면(X-Y 평면)상에서 수직된 좌우 방향, Z축 방향은 X축 방향 및 Y축 방향에 대해 모두 수직된 상하 방향(수직 방향)을 의미할 수 있다.

도 1 내지 도 4를 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩(10)은 배터리 모듈(100), 팩 케이스(200), 커버 부재(300) 및 스페이서(400)를 포함할 수 있다.
먼저, 배터리 모듈(100)은 배터리 셀(110)을 포함할 수 있다. 배터리 셀(110)은 전극 조립체와, 상기 전극 조립체를 수용하는 셀 케이스 및 전극 조립체와 연결되며 셀 케이스의 외측으로 인출되어 전극 단자로 기능하는 전극 리드를 포함할 수 있다. 이때, 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110)은 상호 전기적으로 연결될 수 있다.
한편, 본 발명은 이러한 배터리 셀(110)의 구체적인 종류나 형태에 의해 제한되지 않으며, 본 발명의 출원 시점에 공지된 다양한 배터리 셀(110)이 본 발명의 배터리 팩(10)을 구성하는데 채용될 수 있다. 본 실시예에서는 도면과 같이 에너지 밀도가 높고 적층이 용이한 파우치 타입 이차전지를 대상으로 하나, 원통형 또는 각형 이차전지가 배터리 셀(110)로 적용될 수 있음은 물론이다.
배터리 셀(110)은 배터리 모듈(100)에 복수 개 포함될 수 있다. 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110)은, 수직 방향(Z축 방향)으로 세워진 상태에서 전후 방향(X축 방향)으로 나란하게 배치될 수 있다. 즉, 배터리 모듈(100)은 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110)의 집합체를 의미할 수 있다.
팩 케이스(200)는 배터리 모듈(100)을 수용하도록 구성될 수 있다. 팩 케이스(200)는 배터리 모듈(100)이 수용되도록 구성되는 수용 공간(S)이 형성될 수 있다. 수용 공간(S)은 빈 공간으로서, 배터리 모듈(100)을 내부에 수용 가능한 형상으로 구비될 수 있다.
이때, 수용 공간(S)은 복수 개 구비될 수 있다. 또한, 배터리 모듈(100)은 복수 개로 구비될 수 있다. 복수 개의 배터리 모듈(100)은 팩 케이스(200) 내부의 수용 공간(S)에서, 다수의 열을 따라 적어도 일 방향으로 인접 배치될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 3에 도시된 바와 같이, 복수 개의 배터리 모듈(100)은 전후 방향(X축 방향)을 따라 4열로 구비되고, 좌우 방향(Y축 방향)을 따라 2열로 구비될 수 있다.
팩 케이스(200)는 내부에 수용된 배터리 모듈(100) 등을 안전하게 보호하기 위하여, 스틸이나 SUS와 같은 금속 내지 플라스틱과 같이 기계적 강성이 확보될 수 있는 재질로 이루어지거나 이러한 재질을 포함할 수 있다.
커버 부재(300)는 배터리 모듈(100)의 외측에 구비될 수 있다. 특히, 배터리 모듈(100)과 팩 케이스(200) 사이에 구비될 수 있다. 커버 부재(300)는 배터리 셀(110)로부터 배출되는 벤팅 가스가 통과하도록 구성될 수 있다. 구체적인 예로서, 커버 부재(300)에는 관통홀(CH)이 형성될 수 있다. 커버 부재(300)는 예를 들어 타공판 내지 메쉬 형상으로 구성될 수 있다. 커버 부재(300)는 복수 개의 관통홀(CH)이 조밀하게 형성될 수 있다. 이때, 관통홀(CH)의 크기는 모두 같을 수도 있고, 부분적으로 차이가 있을 수도 있다.
이러한 커버 부재(300)는 열전도성이 낮고, 내열 및/또는 내화 성능이 우수한 소재가 포함된 재질로 이루어질 수 있다. 일례로, 커버 부재(300)는 난연성의 마이카(mica) 소재로 제작될 수도 있다. 또는, 커버 부재(300)는 강성과 내열성을 가진 금속 소재로 구성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 관통홀(CH)이 형성됨에 따라 배터리 모듈(100)에서 열적 이벤트 발생 시 생성되는 벤팅 가스가 여러 방향으로 분산 배출될 수 있다(도 4의 실선 화살표 참조). 벤팅 가스가 한꺼번에 한 방향으로 배출되는 경우, 열이 집중되어 폭발 내지 화재가 발생할 수 있는데, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 이러한 현상이 억제될 수 있다. 또한, 인접하는 배터리 모듈(100)로 전달되는 단위 면적 당 열에너지가 감소될 수 있으므로, 배터리 모듈(100) 간 열 전파가 억제 내지 지연될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 커버 부재(300)에 의해 배터리 모듈(100)에서 열적 이벤트 발생 시 생성되는 벤팅 가스의 흐름에 저항을 주어 벤팅 가스의 유속이 저하될 수 있다. 이에 따라, 인접하는 배터리 모듈(100)에 전파되는 단위시간 당 열에너지가 감소될 수 있으므로, 배터리 모듈(100) 간 열 전파가 억제 내지 지연될 수 있다.
더욱이, 커버 부재(300)는 벤팅 가스와 함께 배출되는 화염이나 스파크 등이 커버 부재(300)의 외측으로 배출되는 것을 억제하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이때, 관통홀(CH)은 배터리 모듈(100)에서 발생한 화염이나 스파크가 관통홀(CH)을 통해 외부로 노출되지 않을 정도의 크기로 한정되는 것이 바람직하다.
직진성이 강한 스파크나 화염 등은 배터리 셀(100)에서 배출되어 팩 케이스(200)의 내부 구조물에 부딪히며 팩 케이스(200)에 열이 집중될 수 있는데, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 스파크나 화염 등은 커버 부재(300)에 의해 흐름 방향이 절곡될 수 있다(도 4의 점선 화살표 참조).
이에 따라, 스파크가 팩 케이스(200)의 외부로 배출되는 것이 억제될 수 있으므로, 팩 케이스(200)의 외부에서 스파크와 산소가 반응하여 화염이 발생되는 것이 억제될 수 있다. 그러므로, 본 발명의 상기 측면에 의하면, 배터리 팩(10)의 안전성과 신뢰성이 보장될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 일 실시 구성에 의하면, 배터리 셀(100)에서 생성되는 스파크는 커버 부재(300)에 의해 차단될 수 있으며, 그와 동시에 벤팅 가스는 관통홀(CH)로 원활하게 배출될 수 있다. 이로써, 배터리 셀(100)의 이상 상황 발생시, 벤팅 가스를 신속하게 팩 케이스(200)의 외부로 배출시켜 팩 케이스(200) 내부의 내압이 상승되는 것이 방지되고, 다른 배터리 셀(100)들의 추가 연쇄 발화를 방지할 수 있다.
커버 부재(300)와 팩 케이스(200)는 소정 간격 이격됨으로써, 상기 이격된 공간으로 벤팅 가스나 화염 등이 이동할 수 있다. 이때, 스페이서(400)는 커버 부재(300)와 팩 케이스(200) 사이의 간격(D1)을 유지하도록 구성될 수 있다. 스페이서(400)는 커버 부재(300)에 장착될 수 있다. 스페이서(400)는 커버 부재(300)의 외측에 구비될 수 있다.
한편, 도 5는 비교예로서, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩에 포함되는 스페이서가 구비되지 않는 경우를 도시한 것이다.
만약, 비교예인 도 5에 도시된 바와 같이 스페이서(400)가 구비되지 않는다면, 배터리 모듈(100) 내 열 폭주 발생 시, 배터리 셀(110)에서 토출되는 가스의 압력 및/또는 분진이나 화염 등의 높은 열에 의해 팩 케이스(200)의 형상이 변형될 수 있다. 이를테면, 팩 케이스(200)의 상부면의 일 부분은 상방으로 부풀어 오르고, 인접하는 부분은 반대로 하방으로 꺼질 수 있다. 이로써, 팩 케이스(200)의 상부면이 하방으로 꺼진 부분에서 팩 케이스(200)와 커버 부재(300) 사이의 간격(D1)이 줄어들어 벤팅 가스가 이동하는 경로가 확보되지 못할 수 있다.
그러나, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 의하면, 스페이서(400)가 팩 케이스(200)에 결합됨에 따라 팩 케이스(200)가 벤팅 가스 등의 압력 및/또는 열에 의해 휘거나 변형되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
이에 따라, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 케이스(200)와 커버 부재(300) 사이의 간격(D1)이 유지될 수 있다. 이로써, 벤팅 가스가 배터리 팩(10)의 외부로 원활하게 배출되어 배터리 모듈(100) 간 열 폭주가 억제되거나 방지될 수 있다. 이에 따라, 배터리 팩(10)의 안전성과 신뢰성이 보장될 수 있다.
스페이서(400)는 강성체로 구비될 수 있다. 여기서 강성체란 탄성체와 대비되는 의미이고, 이를테면, 스페이서(400)는 SUS 등 금속 내지 강화 섬유 플라스틱 등의 소재로 마련될 수 있다. 이로써, 스페이서(400)의 기계적 강성이 증가되고, 탄성 병형은 거의 되지 않음에 따라, 외부에서 충격이 가해지더라도 팩 케이스(200)와 커버 부재(300) 사이의 간격(D1)을 일정하게 유지시킬 수 있다.
또한, 스페이서(400)는 내화 및/또는 내열 성능을 가지는 소재로 이루어질 수 있다. 이를테면, 스페이서(400)는 난연 플라스틱 내지 마이카(Mica)와 같은 재질로 구성될 수 있다. 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 화염 등의 높은 열에 의해 스페이서(400)가 녹거나 소실되는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 따라서, 화염이 발생되는 상황이 되더라도 스페이서(400)에 의한 팩 케이스(200)와 커버 부재(300) 사이의 간격(D1) 유지 기능이 담보된다. 다만, 스페이서(400)의 재질은 이에 한정되는 것은 아니다.
한편, 도 3 및 도 4를 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 모듈(100)은 모듈 케이스(120)를 구비할 수 있다. 모듈 케이스(120)는 내부에 빈 공간이 형성되어, 내부 공간에 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110) 중 적어도 일부를 수용하도록 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 모듈 케이스(120)는 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110)을 여러 개의 배터리 모듈(100)로 그룹핑하며, 각 배터리 모듈(100)의 내부 공간을 물리적으로 한정하는 경계가 될 수 있다.
한편, 본 실시예에서는 모듈 케이스(120)가 구비되었으나, 본 실시예와 달리 복수 개의 배터리 모듈(100)은 모듈 케이스(120)가 구비되지 않아 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110) 간의 물리적 경계가 한정되지 않을 수도 있다.
모듈 케이스(120)에는 벤팅홀(VH)이 형성될 수 있다. 벤팅홀(VH)은 모듈 케이스(120)의 내부에 수납된 배터리 셀(110)에서 생성된 벤팅 가스가 모듈 케이스(120)의 외부로 배출되도록 구성될 수 있다.
구체적으로, 벤팅홀(VH)은 특정 방향으로의 디렉셔널 벤팅이 가능하도록 할 수 있다. 일례로, 도 3 및 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이, 모듈 케이스(120)의 상부면에 벤팅홀(VH)이 형성되고, 벤팅홀(VH)을 통해 배터리 모듈(100)의 상방으로의 디렉셔널 벤팅이 가능할 수 있다. 벤팅홀(VH)은 복수 개로 구비될 수 있으며, 수평 방향(X축, Y축 방향)으로 상호 간 일정 간격마다 마련될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 배터리 셀(110)들 중 어느 하나의 배터리 셀(110)이 열 폭주하여 가스 등이 발생한 상황에서, 신속하게 가스 등을 모듈 케이스(120)에서 특정 방향으로 디렉셔널 벤팅시킬 수 있다.
또한, 도면에는 도시되어 있지 않지만, 배터리 모듈(100)은 내부에 수용된 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110)들과 전기적으로 연결된 버스바 어셈블리를 포함할 수 있다.
커버 부재(300)는 모듈 케이스(120)에서 벤팅홀(VH)이 형성된 외측면을 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이를테면, 도 3에 도시된 실시예와 같이, 벤팅홀(VH)이 모듈 케이스(120)의 상부에 형성되는 경우, 커버 부재(300)는 배터리 모듈(100)의 상부를 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다. 커버 부재(300)는 모듈 케이스(120)의 상부면을 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다.
도 4를 참조하면, 커버 부재(300)는 배터리 모듈(100)과 소정 거리 이격되게 배치될 수 있다. 이를테면, 커버 부재(300)는 모듈 케이스(120)의 상부면을 외측에서 커버하도록 구성되어 모듈 케이스(120)의 상부면과 소정 거리 이격되게 구비될 수 있다.
이때, 벤팅홀(VH)은 커버 부재(300)의 관통홀(CH)과 연통되도록 구성될 수 있다. 이에 따라, 배터리 셀(110)에서 생성된 벤팅 가스는 벤팅홀(VH)을 통해 배터리 모듈(100)의 외측으로 배출되어 관통홀(CH)을 통해 커버 부재(300)의 외측으로 이동할 수 있다.
도 6은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩에 포함되는 커버 부재를 설명하기 위한 도면이다.
커버 부재(300)는 복수 개의 수용 공간(S) 중 적어도 일부의 수용 공간(S)을 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 커버 부재(300)는 복수 개의 배터리 모듈(100) 중 적어도 일부의 상부를 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이를테면, 커버 부재(300)는 일 방향으로 배치된 배터리 모듈(100)들의 전체를 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다. 도 6에 도시된 실시예와 같이, 커버 부재(300)는 배터리 모듈(100)의 전부를 커버하도록 하나의 플레이트 형태로 구성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 커버 부재(300)가 하나의 플레이트로 구성됨으로써, 커버 부재(300)는 배터리 모듈(100)이 수용되는 팩 케이스(200)의 수용 공간(S)과 그 외측 공간을 확실하게 분리할 수 있다. 이로써, 커버 부재(300)의 외측으로 배출된 벤팅 가스 등이 인접하는 다른 배터리 모듈(100)에 영향을 미치지 않도록 할 수 있다.
도 7은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩에 포함되는 커버 부재를 설명하기 위한 도면이다.
다른 실시예로서, 커버 부재(300)는 복수 개 구비될 수 있다. 커버 부재(300)는 복수 개의 수용 공간(S) 중 적어도 일부에 개별적으로 구비될 수 있다. 이를테면, 도 7에 도시된 실시예와 같이, 커버 부재(300)는 배터리 모듈(100)의 상부면을 각각 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 수용 공간(S)에 커버 부재(300)가 개별적으로 구비됨으로써, 필요한 구역에만 커버 부재(300)를 선택적으로 배치시킬 수 있으므로, 안전성을 보다 개선하면서 배터리 팩(10)의 에너지 효율을 향상시킬 수 있다.
한편, 도 2, 도 6 및 도 7을 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 팩 케이스(200)는 베이스 프레임(210)과 사이드 프레임(220)을 포함할 수 있다.
베이스 프레임(210)은 팩 케이스(200)의 하부면을 형성할 수 있으며, 사각판 형태로 구비될 수 있다. 그리고, 베이스 프레임(210)은 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110)이 상부 표면에 안착되도록 구성될 수 있다. 더욱이, 베이스 프레임(210)은 평평한 상부 표면을 구비하여, 복수 개의 배터리 모듈(100)이 안정적으로 안착되도록 마련될 수 있다.
사이드 프레임(220)은 베이스 프레임(210)의 각 모서리에서 상방으로 연장될 수 있다. 사이드 프레임(220)은 다수의 단위 벽체를 구비하여, 복수 개의 배터리 셀(110) 또는 배터리 모듈(10)을 둘러싸도록 구비될 수 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 다수의 사이드 프레임(220)은 각각 베이스 프레임(210)의 +Y 방향 측 단부에 위치하는 우측 벽체, +X 방향 측 단부에 위치하는 후방 벽체, -Y 방향 측 단부에 위치하는 좌측 벽체 및 -X 방향 측 단부에 위치하는 전방 벽체로 구비되어 팩 케이스(200)의 측면을 형성할 수 있다.
팩 리드(240)는 복수 개의 배터리 모듈(100)의 상부를 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다. 팩 리드(240)는 팩 케이스(200)의 개방된 상부를 커버하도록 구성될 수 있다. 팩 리드(240)는 사이드 프레임(220)에 결합될 수 있다. 팩 리드(240)는 배터리 모듈(100)과 같은 팩 케이스(200)의 내부에 수납된 구성요소들을 보호하고, 이러한 배터리 모듈(100)에서 배출된 배출물이 팩 케이스(200)의 외부, 특히 상부로 배출되는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
또한, 팩 케이스(200)는 벤팅부(250)를 구비할 수 있다. 벤팅부(250)는 배터리 모듈(100)에서 생성되는 배출물을 팩 케이스(200)의 외부로 배출하도록 구성될 수 있다. 벤팅부(250)는 팩 케이스(200)의 내부와 외부 사이를 관통하는 홀의 형태로 구비될 수 있다. 또는, 벤팅부(250)는 팩 케이스(200)의 홀에 장착 가능하도록 구성되어 팩 케이스(200) 내부에서 배출물이 발생되는 경우 작동되는 벤팅 디바이스의 형태로 구비될 수 있다.
벤팅부(250)는 팩 케이스(200)의 측면, 즉 사이드 프레임(220)에 구비될 수 있다. 벤팅부(250)는 복수 개 구비될 수 있다. 벤팅부(250)는 사이드 프레임(220)의 여러 단위 벽체 중 적어도 일부 단위 벽체에 위치할 수 있다. 또한, 벤팅부(250)는 둘 이상의 단위 벽체에 각각 별도로 형성될 수도 있고, 하나의 단위 벽체에 둘 이상 형성될 수도 있다. 예를 들어, 도 2에 도시된 바를 참조하면, 벤팅부(250)는 전방 벽체와 후방 벽체에, 각각 복수 개 구비될 수 있다. 또한, 복수 개의 벤팅부(250)는 사이드 프레임(220)의 중심축을 기준으로 서로 대칭되도록 구비될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 배터리 셀(110)의 이상 상황 시, 고온의 가스 등이 팩 케이스(200)의 양방향으로 배출될 수 있으므로, 가스를 보다 신속하게 상기 팩 케이스(200)의 외부로 배출하기에 용이하다.
한편, 도 2의 실시예 등을 기준으로 설명된 벤팅부(250)의 설치 개수나 위치 등은 일례에 불과하며, 여러 다른 개수나 위치 등으로 변경될 수 있음은 물론이다.
또한, 팩 케이스(200)는 크로스 빔(230)을 구비할 수 있다. 크로스 빔(230)은 배터리 모듈(100) 사이를 구획하도록 구성될 수 있다. 크로스 빔(230)은 배터리 모듈(100) 보다 상방으로 돌출되도록 구비될 수 있다.
이러한 경우, 커버 부재(300)는 크로스 빔(230)에 안착되도록 구성될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 커버 부재(300)는 크로스 빔(230)에 안착되고, 커버 부재(300)의 상부에서 볼트 등 결합 부재에 의해 커버 부재(300) 및 크로스 빔(230)이 서로 결합되어 고정될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 간단한 구조로 커버 부재(300)와 팩 케이스(200) 사이의 결합 고정 구성이 달성될 수 있다. 이로써, 배터리 팩(10)의 조립성이 향상될 수 있다.
더욱이, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 커버 부재(300)가 크로스 빔(230)과 팩 리드(250) 사이에 안정적으로 고정될 수 있으므로 배터리 팩(10)의 강성이 더욱 확보될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 커버 부재(300)와 배터리 모듈(100)은 소정 거리 이격되게 구비될 수 있다. 이에 따라, 커버 부재(300)가 배터리 모듈(100)의 수용 공간(S)과 그 외측 공간을 더욱 확실하게 구획 분리시킬 수 있다. 이로써, 어떤 배터리 모듈(100)에서 벤팅 가스나 화염 등이 배출되는 경우에도 인접하는 다른 배터리 모듈(100)에 열 전파되는 것이 억제될 수 있다.
도 8은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩의 주요 부분의 확대 사시도이다.
한편, 관통홀(CH)은 복수 개 구비될 수 있다. 이러한 복수 개의 관통홀(CH)은 소정 간격으로 이격되어 배치될 수 있다. 스페이서(400)는 복수 개 구비될 수 있다. 스페이서(400)는 서로 이격되도록 배치될 수 있다. 스페이서(400)는 아일랜드 타입으로 구성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 스페이서(400)가 긴 빔 형상으로 구비되지 않고 아일랜드 형상으로 구비됨에 따라, 스페이서(400)의 위치를 자유롭게 설정할 수 있다. 이로써, 설계 자유도가 증가하여 생산성이 향상될 수 있다.
스페이서(400)는 관통홀(CH)에 결합될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 도 8에 도시된 실시예와 같이, 스페이서(400)는 관통홀(CH)에 삽입되도록 구성될 수 있다. 스페이서(400)는 복수 개의 관통홀(CH) 중 적어도 일부에 삽입되도록 구성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 간단한 구조로 스페이서(400)를 커버 부재(300)에 결합할 수 있으므로, 조립성이 향상될 수 있다. 또한, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 커버 부재(300)에 스페이서(400)를 결합하기 위한 홀이나 접착 부재 등 다른 결합 구조가 필요 없으므로, 생산성이 향상될 수 있다.
또한, 스페이서(400)의 단면적은 인접하는 관통홀(CH) 사이의 공간의 면적보다 작게 구성될 수 있다. 이로써, 스페이서(400)는 관통홀(CH)을 차폐하지 않으므로, 관통홀(CH)을 통해 벤팅 가스나 화염이 배출되는 것을 방해하지 않을 수 있다.
도 9는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩에 포함되는 스페이서의 배치를 설명하기 위한 도면이다.
스페이서(400)는 벤팅홀(VH) 사이에 배치될 수 있다. 즉, 스페이서(400)는 벤팅홀(VH)과 엇갈리는 위치에 구비될 수 있다.
상술한 바와 같이, 벤팅홀(VH)은 복수 개로 구비될 수 있으며, 수평 방향(X축, Y축 방향)으로 상호 간 일정 간격마다 마련될 수 있다. 도 9에 도시된 실시예와 같이, 스페이서(400)는 배터리 셀(110)의 길이 방향(도 9의 Y축 방향)을 따라 일렬로 배치되는 벤팅홀(VH) 중 인접하는 벤팅홀(VH)들 사이에 구비될 수 있다. 또한, 스페이서(400)는 벤팅홀(VH)의 외측 부분인 모듈 케이스(120)의 모서리 측에도 구비될 수 있다.
또한, 스페이서(400)의 단면적은 인접하는 벤팅홀(VH) 사이의 공간의 면적보다 작게 구비될 수 있다. 이로써, 스페이서(400)는 벤팅홀(VH)을 차폐하지 않을 수 있으므로, 벤팅홀(VH)을 통해 벤팅 가스가 배출되는 것을 방해하지 않을 수 있다.
이로써, 스페이서(400)가 모듈 케이스(120)의 국소적인 영역에 구비됨에 따라, 도 9에 도시된 화살표와 같이, 벤팅 가스 등이 스페이서(400) 사이로 이동할 수 있다. 즉, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 스페이서(400) 사이에 벤팅 가스의 벤팅 유로가 확보되어 배터리 모듈(100) 간 열 폭주 전파가 효과적으로 방지되거나 지연될 수 있다.
한편, 스페이서(400)가 커버 부재(300)의 관통홀(CH)에 체결되는 밀도(체결 밀도)는 벤팅홀(VH)이 형성되는 위치에 따라 다르게 구성될 수 있다. 여기서, 체결 밀도는 커버 부재(300) 단위 면적당 스페이서(400)의 개수 혹은 스페이서(400)가 차지하는 면적을 가리킬 수 있다. 벤팅홀(VH)의 면적이나 개수 등에 따라 스페이서(400)의 면적이나 개수 등이 자유롭게 조절될 수 있다.

스페이서(400)는 팩 케이스(200)와 커버 부재(300) 사이의 이격 거리(D1)를 제한하도록 구성될 수 있다. 스페이서(400)는 팩 케이스(200)의 하부 방향 이동을 억제하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이를 위해, 스페이서(400)는 커버 부재(300)와 팩 케이스(200) 사이에 구비될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 도 10을 참조하면, 스페이서(400)는 커버 부재(300)와 팩 케이스(200) 사이에 구비되는 제1 부분(410)을 포함할 수 있다. 즉, 제1 부분(410)은 커버 부재(300)의 외측에 구비될 수 있다.
스페이서(400)는 팩 케이스(200)의 내측면에 접촉되도록 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 제1 부분(410)은 팩 리드(240)의 내측면에 접촉되도록 구성될 수 있다. 제1 부분(410)의 상부면은 팩 리드(240)의 내측면에 접촉되고, 제1 부분(410)의 하부면은 커버 부재(300)의 외측면과 대면하도록 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 제1 부분(410)의 높이는 대략 팩 리드(240)와 커버 부재(300)의 이격된 거리(D1)만큼 구성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 스페이서(400)는 배터리 셀(110)의 열적 이벤트가 발생하여 팩 리드(240)가 하방으로 처지려고 할 때, 스토퍼 역할을 하도록 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 스페이서(400)가 팩 리드(240)를 구조적으로 지지함에 따라 팩 리드(240)가 중력에 의해 처지는 것이 억제될 수 있다.
따라서, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 팩 리드(240)와 커버 부재(300)의 이격된 거리(D1)가 유지됨에 따라, 배터리 모듈(100)의 이상 상황 시 배터리 셀(110)에서 생성되는 고온의 가스나 화염 등이 배터리 팩(10)의 외부로 배출되는 경로가 확보될 수 있다. 이로써, 배터리 팩(10) 내부의 열 폭주 전파가 효과적으로 방지되거나 지연되어 배터리 팩(10)의 안전성과 신뢰성이 보장될 수 있다.
더욱이, 스페이서(400)는 배터리 모듈(100)과 커버 부재(300) 사이의 이격 거리(D2)를 제한하도록 구성될 수 있다. 스페이서(400)는 모듈 케이스(120)의 상부 방향 이동을 억제하도록 구성될 수 있다. 이를 위해, 스페이서(400)는 커버 부재(300)와 모듈 케이스(120) 사이에 구비될 수 있다. 구체적으로, 도 10을 참조하면, 스페이서(400)는 커버 부재(300)와 모듈 케이스(120) 사이에 구비되는 제2 부분(420)을 포함할 수 있다. 즉, 제2 부분(420)은 커버 부재(300)의 내측에 구비될 수 있다.
구체적으로, 스페이서(400)는 배터리 모듈(100)의 상부에 안착되어 구비될 수 있다. 즉, 제2 부분(420)의 높이는 대략 커버 부재(300)와 배터리 모듈(100)의 이격된 거리(D2)만큼 구비될 수 있다.
배터리 모듈(100) 내부에서 열적 이벤트 발생 시, 배터리 모듈(100) 내부의 압력이 높아짐에 따라 모듈 케이스(120)의 상부면이 팽창할 수 있다. 이러한 경우, 모듈 케이스(120)의 상부면과 배터리 셀(110) 사이의 공간이 일정하지 않게 되어 벤팅홀(VH)을 통한 디렉셔널 벤팅이 원활하게 되지 않을 수 있다.
그러나, 본 발명의 상기 실시예에 따르면, 배터리 모듈(100)과 커버 부재(300) 사이에 스페이서(400)가 구비됨에 따라, 스페이서(400)가 배터리 모듈(100)의 상부에서 배터리 모듈(100)을 가압하여 고정시킬 수 있다. 이로써, 배터리 모듈(100)이 상부로 팽창되는 것을 방지할 수 있으므로, 배터리 모듈(100) 내부의 배출물이 벤팅홀(VH)을 통해 외부로 원활하게 디렉셔널 벤팅될 수 있다.
본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 스페이서(400)가 커버 부재(300)를 구조적으로 지지함에 따라 커버 부재(300)가 중력에 의해 쳐지는 것이 방지될 수 있다. 또한, 모듈 케이스(120)가 들뜨는 것을 더욱 확실하게 방지할 수 있다. 이에 따라, 커버 부재(300)와 배터리 모듈(100)의 이격된 거리(D2)가 유지될 수 있다.
특히, 스페이서(400)는 모듈 케이스(120)가 들뜨기 쉬운 부분에 더욱 밀집하여 구비될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 스페이서(400)는 벤팅홀(VH)에 인접하는 부분에 구비될 수 있다.
벤팅홀(VH)에서 벤팅 가스나 화염 등이 배출될 때, 벤팅 가스나 화염 등의 열에 의해 벤팅홀(VH)과 인접하는 부분이 부풀어 오를 가능성이 높다. 따라서, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성과 같이, 스페이서(400)가 벤팅홀(VH)에 인접하는 부분에 구비됨으로써, 벤팅홀(VH)이 구비된 모듈 케이스(120)가 부풀어 오르는 것을 더욱 효과적으로 억제할 수 있다.
한편, 도 10을 참조하면, 제1 부분(410)의 면적과 제2 부분(420)의 면적은 대략 동일하게 구비될 수 있다. 또한, 스페이서(400)의 단면적은 관통홀(CH)과 대략 동일하게 구성될 수 있다. 이러한 경우, 스페이서(400)는 관통홀(CH)에 억지 끼움 결합되어 관통홀(CH)에 고정될 수 있다.
도 11은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩에 포함되는 스페이서의 구조를 설명하기 위한 도면이다.
한편, 도 11에 도시된 실시예와 같이, 스페이서(400)는 관통홀(CH)의 크기보다 크게 구성될 수 있다. 즉, 스페이서(400)가 커버 부재(300)에 투영되는 면적이 관통홀(CH)의 크기보다 크게 구성될 수 있다.
이를 테면, 스페이서(400)의 제1 부분(410)이 관통홀(CH)의 단면적보다 크게 구성될 수 있다. 또한, 스페이서(400)의 제2 부분(420)이 관통홀(CH)이 단면적보다 크게 구성될 수 있다.
스페이서(400)가 관통홀(CH)에 결합되는 경우, 배터리 셀(110)로부터 생성되는 벤팅 가스나 화염 등의 높은 압력에 의해 스페이서(400)가 관통홀(CH)에서 분리될 위험이 있는데, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 스페이서(400)가 관통홀(CH)에서 분리되는 것이 방지될 수 있다. 이에 따라, 배터리 모듈(100)과 커버 부재(300) 사이의 공간이 안정적으로 확보될 수 있다.
또한, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 스페이서(400)가 팩 리드(240)와 배터리 모듈(100) 간의 접촉 면적이 더욱 확보될 수 있으므로, 스페이서(400)는 팩 리드(240)와 배터리 모듈(100) 사이의 공간에서 커버 부재(300)를 안정적으로 고정시킬 수 있다. 이에 따라, 커버 부재(300)가 높은 열 등에 의해 형상이 변형되는 것이 방지될 수 있다.
또한, 이러한 경우, 제1 부분(410)과 제2 부분(420)은 각각 관통홀(CH)을 중심으로 관통홀(CH)의 외측에서 관통홀(CH)을 향해 이동하여 서로 끼움 결합될 수 있다. 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 스페이서(400)의 조립성이 더욱 확보될 수 있다. 또한, 본 발명의 상기 실시 구성에 의하면, 관통홀(CH)의 크기와 상관없이 스페이서(400)의 크기가 더 크면 관통홀(CH)에 결합될 수 있으므로 배터리 팩(10) 제조 시 생산성이 향상될 수 있다.
도 12는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩이 포함되는 자동차의 개략적인 사시도이다.
도 12를 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 자동차(30)는, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩(10)을 하나 이상 포함할 수 있다. 본 발명에 따른 자동차(30)는, 예를 들어 전기 자동차, 하이브리드 자동차 또는 플러그인 하이브리드 자동차일 수 있다. 상기 자동차(30)는, 4륜 자동차 및 2륜 자동차를 포함한다. 상기 자동차(30)는, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 팩(10)으로부터 전력을 공급받아 동작한다.
이상에서 본 발명은 비록 한정된 실시예와 도면에 의해 설명되었으나, 본 발명은 이것에 의해 한정되지 않으며 본 발명이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에 의해 본 발명의 기술사상과 아래에 기재될 청구범위의 균등범위 내에서 다양한 수정 및 변형이 가능함은 물론이다.

Claims (13)

  1. 복수 개의 배터리 셀을 포함하는 복수 개의 배터리 모듈;
    상기 복수 개의 배터리 모듈을 수용하도록 구성되는 수용 공간이 형성되는 팩 케이스;
    상기 배터리 모듈과 상기 팩 케이스 사이에 구비되며, 상기 배터리 셀로부터 배출되는 벤팅 가스가 통과하도록 관통홀이 형성된 커버 부재; 및
    상기 커버 부재에 장착되어 상기 커버 부재와 상기 팩 케이스 사이의 간격을 유지시키도록 구성되는 스페이서를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  2. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 커버 부재는 상기 배터리 모듈의 상부를 커버하도록 구성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  3. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 팩 케이스는 복수 개의 수용 공간을 구비하고,
    상기 커버 부재는 적어도 일부의 수용 공간을 커버하도록 구성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  4. 제3항에 있어서,
    상기 커버 부재는 복수 개 구비되어 상기 복수 개의 수용 공간 중 적어도 일부에 개별적으로 구비되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  5. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 팩 케이스는 상기 복수 개의 배터리 모듈을 구획하도록 구성되는 크로스 빔을 구비하고,
    상기 커버 부재는 상기 크로스 빔에 안착되도록 구성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  6. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 관통홀은 복수 개 구비되어 소정 간격으로 이격되어 배치되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  7. 제6항에 있어서,
    상기 스페이서는 복수 개의 상기 관통홀 중 적어도 일부에 삽입되도록 구성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  8. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 배터리 모듈은
    상기 복수 개의 배터리 셀을 그룹핑하도록 구성되고, 일측면에 상기 벤팅 가스를 외부로 배출시키도록 구성되는 벤팅홀이 형성되는 모듈 케이스를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  9. 제8항에 있어서,
    상기 스페이서는 상기 벤팅홀과 엇갈리는 위치에 구비되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  10. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 스페이서는
    상기 커버 부재와 상기 팩 케이스 사이에 구비되는 제1 부분을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  11. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 스페이서는
    상기 커버 부재와 상기 배터리 셀 사이에 구비되는 제2 부분을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  12. 제1항에 있어서,
    상기 스페이서는 상기 관통홀의 크기보다 크게 구성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 팩.
  13. 제1항 내지 제12항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 배터리 팩을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 자동차.
