- thermoelectric conversion functionality Devices that can convert thermal energy into electrical energy, or electrical energy into thermal energy, are known.
- An example of a device with such thermoelectric conversion functionality is the heat flow sensor.
- Heat flow sensors are expected to be used in applications such as high-speed temperature control of home appliances and automotive equipment, green building construction to detect thermal energy loss in walls, and in the medical field for deep temperature measurement and exhaled breath temperature monitoring.
- heat flow sensors that utilize the anomalous Nernst effect, a thermoelectric effect that occurs in magnetic materials are easier to fabricate than conventional heat flow sensors, and are devices that can easily be made large-area and flexible. They are expected to be new sensors that solve the problems of conventional heat flow sensors that utilize the Seebeck effect.
- the anomalous Nernst effect is a thermoelectric phenomenon in which, when a temperature gradient (heat flow) is applied to a magnetic material, an electric field is generated in a direction perpendicular to the magnetization and temperature gradient.
- Heat flow sensors that utilize the anomalous Nernst effect have a structure in which thin films of linear magnetic material M1, processed into fine lines on the order of ⁇ m on a thin-film substrate or flexible sheet that serves as the base material, are connected in series in the in-plane direction of the base material by non-magnetic material N or another magnetic material M2.
- this type of structure will be simply referred to as ⁇ M1/N(M2)>.
- a necessary condition for measuring heat flow quantitatively is that a uniform, constant heat flow be generated in the direction perpendicular to the surface of the substrate.
- heat non-uniformity will occur during use.
- a constant heat flow will be generated not only in the direction perpendicular to the surface but also in the in-plane direction.
- the voltage due to the Seebeck effect generated in the magnetic material of the thin wire and the non-magnetic material connecting it will be superimposed as an offset voltage on the voltage due to the anomalous Nernst effect.
- This offset voltage can be significant compared to the voltage due to the anomalous Nernst effect, and may result in a large error in the detected heat flux value.

This is a state in which no thermal non-uniformity occurs.
- Figure 1(b) shows a state in which thermal non-uniformity occurs, heat flow occurs in the direction of ⁇ Ty, and the voltage due to the Seebeck effect is superimposed on the voltage due to the anomalous Nernst effect as an offset voltage.
- magnetic materials M1 and M2 are magnetic materials but have different Seebeck coefficients, resulting in the Seebeck effect.
- a heat flow occurs in the direction of ⁇ Ty, and the Seebeck effect voltage, the Seebeck electric field E M1 of M1, and the Seebeck electric field E M2 of M2, are superimposed on the voltage due to the anomalous Nernst effect as an offset voltage.
- the electric field E M1 ⁇ the electric field E M2 the difference between the Seebeck electric fields of M1 and M2 caused by ⁇ Ty is E M1 - E M2 ⁇ 0, resulting in an offset voltage due to the Seebeck effect.
- Patent Document 2 claims that by combining materials such that the difference in Seebeck coefficients is extremely small to create ⁇ M1/N>, it is possible to cancel offset voltages due to the Seebeck effect even when thermal non-uniformity occurs. However, even if the Seebeck coefficients are nearly equal at a certain temperature, the difference in the Seebeck coefficients changes as the operating temperature changes, and as a result, when thermal non-uniformity occurs, offset voltages due to the Seebeck effect are generated.
- thermoelectric devices As mentioned above, it is difficult to cancel the offset voltage due to the Seebeck effect over a wide temperature range in ⁇ M1/N> and ⁇ M1/M2> type thermoelectric devices.

- a structure can be created in which only magnetic materials M1 with the same component composition, crystal structure, electrical properties, thermoelectric properties, and magnetic properties are connected in series (magnetic material M1/magnetic material M1; magnetic materials M1 and M1 are the same magnetic material), even if an in-plane heat flow occurs, a Seebeck voltage will not be generated and the sensor can be completely canceled out.
- the first linear body is magnetic material M1, and multiple pieces are deposited parallel to each other on an insulating substrate. Between these magnetic materials M1, second linear bodies are deposited to electrically connect adjacent magnetic materials M1 in series.
- thermoelectric device configuration comprising an insulating substrate 11, first linear bodies M1 formed of a magnetic material and arranged in parallel on the insulating substrate 11, and second linear bodies M1 formed of a magnetic material that electrically connects adjacent magnetic materials in series, wherein the magnetic material of the first linear bodies M1 and the magnetic material of the second linear bodies M1 are materials having the exact same component composition, crystal structure, electrical properties, thermoelectric properties, and magnetic properties.
- the same material is sufficient as long as it has at least the same component composition, crystal structure, and thermoelectric properties.
- the anomalous Nernst voltage will be canceled out and the output will be zero.
- an external magnetic field is applied to align the magnetization direction, and then the second linear body (M1-b) is formed under exactly the same process conditions as the M1-a line.
- thermoelectric device configuration characterized by controlling the magnetization states of the first linear body and the second linear body, with the magnetization direction of the first linear body being aligned and the magnetization direction of the second linear body not being aligned.
- the Seebeck coefficient shown below differs in a sensor in which thin wires of magnetic material M1 and non-magnetic material N are alternately connected in series ( ⁇ M1/N> type heat flow sensor), or in a sensor in which two types of magnetic materials M1 and M2 with thermoelectric powers of the anomalous Nernst effect having opposite signs are alternately connected in series ( ⁇ M1/M2> type heat flow sensor).
- all the thin wires in the anomalous Nernst heat flow sensor 10 are made of magnetic material M1, which has the exact same component composition, crystal structure, electrical properties, thermoelectric properties, and magnetic properties, so that the offset voltage is theoretically zero even when an in-plane heat flow occurs (all wires are M1-type heat flow sensors). That is, the following equation is realized.
- M1-a After patterning M1-a, an external magnetic field sufficient to align the magnetization of M1-a is applied. Even when the external magnetic field is reduced to zero, the magnetization remains as residual magnetization. Then, to connect the M1-a wires, a film of the same magnetic material M1 is formed and patterned to form M1-b. As shown in Figure 4, immediately after film formation, the residual magnetization is zero, so the anomalous Nernst voltage generated in M1-b is zero. Therefore, M1-b plays a role similar to the non-magnetic material N in an ⁇ M1/N> type heat flow sensor, and at the same time, it has the dual role of canceling out the Seebeck voltage generated in M1-a when an in-plane heat flow occurs.
- this embodiment has the advantage of only outputting a voltage for heat flows that flow purely in the perpendicular direction. This makes it possible to detect the average heat flow density in the perpendicular direction without error, without being affected by the temperature gradient in the in-plane direction, even when heat flows in the in-plane direction, which is unavoidable in the usage environment. This makes it possible to apply this to a wide range of applications, even for measurement objects that are prone to non-uniform heat flows.
- a heat flow sensor was fabricated using an SmCo (samarium cobalt) amorphous magnetic material, with all wires made of SmCo.

- the initial wire pattern was formed using a lift-off process. First, a pattern was formed on a thermally oxidized silicon substrate using photolithography. The substrate was then placed in a sputtering device, and a 150 nm thick SmCo amorphous thin film was deposited.
- the M1-b wire which connects the M1-a wire in series, was formed using the exact same process, using lithography, sputter deposition, and lift-off processes.
- an ⁇ M1-a/M1-b> type heat flow sensor was completed, with the entire wire made of SmCo.
- an ⁇ SmCo/Au> type heat flow sensor was also completed as an ⁇ M1/N> type heat flow sensor, in which the wires connected in series were made of Au.

This is equivalent to the anomalous Nernst voltage output when a vertical heat flow of 1000 W/ m2 is applied, indicating the possibility of Seebeck offset, which can cause significant errors in the measurement of vertical heat flow.
