  • the aerosol generating material having the permittivity increases in temperature, and the permittivity of the aerosol generating material increases further due to the temperature increase.
  • the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) increases more than c2, which is the electrostatic capacitance value immediately after the aerosol generating article (605) is inserted.
  • the p3 section is the smoking section after preheating is complete.
  • the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) may repeatedly rise and fall due to the influence of the user's puff.
  • the reason why the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) repeatedly rises and falls in the p3 section is that the temperature of the receiving portion (610i) may change when the user's puff is generated, and the amount of an aerosol generating substance having a dielectric constant inserted into the receiving portion may change as it is inhaled by the user.
  • the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) changes depending on whether an aerosol generating article (605) is inserted. Therefore, by comparing the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) with a reference value, it is possible to determine whether an aerosol generating article (605) is inserted.

  • FIG. 12a illustrates a state in which, after the user has finished smoking the aerosol generating article (605), the aerosol generating article (605) has been removed from the receiving portion (610i), and some of the aerosol remains in the receiving portion (610i) in the form of droplets (dr).
  • the receiving portion (610i) may be configured in a cylindrical shape including a side surface (610a) and a bottom surface (610b). Aerosol is generated from the aerosol generating article through heating by the heater (650) and is mostly inhaled by the user. However, some of the aerosol generated from the aerosol generating article may not be inhaled by the user, but may remain in the form of droplets (dr) on the side surface (610a) or the bottom surface (610b) of the receiving portion (610i). Since the droplets (dr) have a relatively high permittivity compared to the permittivity of air, they may affect the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i).
  • Fig. 12b illustrates a state in which an aerosol generating article (605) is inserted into the receiving portion (610i) following the state of 12a.
  • the aerosol generating article (605) is inserted into the receiving portion (610i)
  • the droplets (dr) remaining on the side surface (610a) or the bottom surface (610b) of the receiving portion (610i) are absorbed by the aerosol generating article (605), and thus the position of the droplets (dr) may move from the side surface (610a) of the receiving portion (610i) toward the center of the receiving portion (610i).
  • the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) may be affected not only by the permittivity of the droplets (dr), but also by the distance between the droplets (dr) and the sensor (620). Accordingly, when the droplet (dr) remaining on the side (610a) or bottom surface (610b) of the receiving portion (610i) moves to the aerosol generating article (605) inserted into the receiving portion (610i) and is absorbed, a change in the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) may occur due to a change in the distance between the droplet (dr) and the sensor (620).
  • graph 1120 unlike graph 1110, has a downward convex graph shape in the p2 section. Specifically, the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) gradually decreases in the p21 section and then increases again in the p22 section. In the p2 section, the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) has a minimum value at the third time point (t3) and has a value of “c2-d” that is d smaller than c2.
  • the reason for the decrease in the electrostatic capacity of the receiving portion (610i) in the p21 section is presumed to be that, as described in Fig. 12b, the droplets (dr) remaining on the side (610a) or bottom surface (610b) of the receiving portion (610i) are absorbed and moved to the aerosol generating article (605) inserted into the receiving portion (610i), thereby changing the distance between the droplets (dr) and the sensor (620).
  • the reason why the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) increases again in the p22 section is presumed to be because the droplets (dr) remaining in the receiving portion (610i) are vaporized and removed as the heater (650) performs the preheating operation, or the droplets (dr) absorbed in the aerosol generating article (605) are vaporized and removed.
  • the aerosol generating article (605) is heated by the preheating heater (650), the temperature of the aerosol generating material having a dielectric constant increases, and the dielectric constant of the aerosol generating material increases further due to the temperature increase.
  • the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) in the latter half of the p22 section increases more than c2, which is the electrostatic capacitance value immediately after the aerosol generating article (605) is inserted.
  • the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) when the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) is smaller than the second reference value (th2), it can be determined that the aerosol generating article (605) has been removed from the receiving portion (610i). However, as seen in graph 1120, due to the influence of the droplets (dr) remaining in the receiving portion (610i), the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) has a pattern (a downward convex pattern) in which it decreases and then increases again in the p2 section.
  • the processor (640) can adjust the reference value for determining that the aerosol generating article (605) has been removed from the receiving portion (610i) in the preheating section. Specifically, the processor (640) determines that the aerosol generating article (605) has been removed from the receiving portion if the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) in the preheating section is less than a third reference value (th3) obtained by subtracting the w value from the second reference value (th2). In contrast, in the smoking section, the processor (640) can determine that the aerosol generating article (605) has been removed from the receiving portion if the electrostatic capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) is less than the second reference value (th2).
  • the third reference value (th3) cannot be lowered below the second reference value (th2) without a lower limit.
  • the reference value for determining the insertion of the aerosol-generating article (605) be set differently from the reference value for determining the removal of the aerosol-generating article (605). Therefore, it is preferable that the second reference value (th2) be set to a value at least higher than the first reference value (th1). That is, it is preferable that the w value be set to be greater than 0 and smaller than the difference (th2-th1) between the first reference value (th1) and the second reference value (th2).
  • the value of w may be determined in response to the amount (d) of the drop in the capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) in the p2 section. In one embodiment, the value of w may be determined in proportion to the amount (d) of the drop in the capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) in the p2 section. In another embodiment, the value of w may be determined to be the same value as the amount (d) of the drop in the capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) in the p2 section.
  • the amount (d) of the drop in the capacitance of the receiving portion (610i) in the p2 section may be proportional to the amount of droplets (dr) remaining in the receiving portion (610i) before the aerosol generating article (605) is inserted into the receiving portion (610i). Consequently, the value of w may be set based on the amount of droplets (dr) remaining in the receiving portion (610i) before the aerosol generating article (605) is inserted into the receiving portion (610i).
  • the processor (640) may set the value w in proportion to the time between the last puff time for another aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before the aerosol-generating article (605) is inserted, and the end of heating time for another aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before. This is because the longer the time between the last puff time for another aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before the aerosol-generating article (605) is inserted, and the end of heating time for another aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before the aerosol-generating article (605) is, the greater the amount of droplets (dr) remaining in the receiving portion (610i).
  • the other aerosol-generating article 605 is referred to to distinguish it from the aerosol-generating article (605) inserted at the present time, and refers to the previous aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before the current aerosol-generating article (605) is inserted.
  • the processor (640) may set the value of w inversely proportional to the total number of puffs for another aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before the aerosol-generating article (605) is inserted. This is because when the total number of puffs for another aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before the aerosol-generating article (605) is large, most of the aerosol generated from the other aerosol-generating article (605) is inhaled by the user, and the amount left in the form of droplets (dr) in the receiving portion (610i) may be relatively small.
  • the processor (640) may set the value of w inversely proportional to the time between the end of heating for another aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before the aerosol-generating article (605) is inserted and the time when the aerosol-generating article (605) is inserted. This is because the longer the time between the end of heating for another aerosol-generating article (605) inserted immediately before the aerosol-generating article (605) is inserted and the time when the aerosol-generating article (605) is inserted, the more likely it is that most of the droplets (dr) remaining in the receiving portion (610i) will be vaporized and removed.
