Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for extracting lignin contained in herbs, as well as a composition containing isolated lignin derived from herbs and a method for producing the same.
- Lignin is a polymeric compound formed by the enzymatic oxidative polymerization of lignin monomers called monolignols, and is one of the main components that make up plant cell walls.
- lignin has been attracting attention as a renewable resource, it is difficult to separate lignin contained in plants because it forms a strong composite material with polysaccharides (cellulose, hemicellulose) in plant cell walls (Non-Patent Documents 1 and 2).
- Patent Document 1 Methods that have been discovered so far for separating (extracting) lignin contained in herbs include a method that uses black liquor discharged during paper pulp production (Patent Document 1), and a method that involves enzymatically saccharifying lignocellulosic raw materials and then heating them in a specific solvent to obtain a lignin decomposition product (Patent Document 2).
- the inventors have discovered that it is possible to feed herbaceous plants to termites that consume herbaceous plants, and that lignin contained in herbaceous plants can be extracted by a method that includes feeding herbaceous plants to termites that consume herbaceous plants.
- the present invention is based on this novel finding, and aims to provide a method for extracting lignin contained in herbaceous plants, as well as a composition containing isolated lignin derived from herbaceous plants and a method for producing the same.
- One aspect of the present invention relates to a method for extracting lignin from herbs, which involves feeding herbs to termites that eat herbs.
- the inventors' research has revealed that it is possible to cause food-eating termites to eat herbaceous plants. It has also been discovered that by causing food-eating termites to eat herbaceous plants, lignin can be concentrated and separated as excrement (feces) from the termites. In this way, lignin contained in herbaceous plants can be extracted by a method that includes causing food-eating termites to eat herbaceous plants.
- Another aspect of the present invention relates to a method for producing a composition containing isolated lignin derived from herbaceous plants, which comprises feeding herbaceous plants to termites that feed on herbaceous plants.
- Yet another aspect of the present invention relates to a composition containing isolated lignin derived from herbs.
- the present invention provides a method for extracting lignin from herbs, as well as a composition containing isolated lignin derived from herbs and a method for producing the composition.
- 1 is a graph showing the results of a rearing experiment of formosan termites using artificial bait.
- isolated lignin means that the lignin is in a state different from that of lignin in plants such as herbs. More specifically, in plants, lignin is tightly combined with polysaccharides (cellulose, hemicellulose), and when lignin is at least partially separated from these polysaccharides, it is referred to as “isolated” lignin.
- a method for extracting lignin contained in herbs includes feeding the herbs to termites that eat the herbs.
- Food-eating termites are termites whose main food source is woody plants, and are not known to feed on herbaceous plants.
- Termites can break down and absorb the polysaccharides in the complex of polysaccharides and lignin, and as a result, excrete the separated lignin derived from the herbaceous plants as excrement (feces). Therefore, by feeding food-eating termites on herbaceous plants, the lignin contained in the complex with polysaccharides in the herbaceous plants can be extracted into the excrement of the food-eating termites.
- the method used to separate lignin contained in herbs involves treating the herbs with acid or alkali at high temperature and pressure, and extracting the decomposed lignin in an acid or alkali liquid.
- the lignin recovered in this way is soluble in acid or alkali at least under high temperature or pressure conditions, and is highly decomposed and broken down into smaller molecules.
- lignin is separated by termites selectively consuming the polysaccharides in the complex of lignin and polysaccharides in herbs. Therefore, according to the method according to this embodiment, lignin can be extracted without decomposition and with minimal chemical denaturation.
- the method according to this embodiment uses the digestive function of termites and does not require high-temperature and high-pressure processing, making it possible to extract lignin at low cost and with low energy.

- Giant termites prefer rotten wood, and in nature they only live in deep forests with high precipitation, and they rarely cause damage to wooden buildings. Furthermore, they have a large body size and eat a lot per individual. For this reason, giant termites are particularly suitable as food-use termites in one embodiment. Abstract
