Description

MIRROR ASSEMBLY FOR A VEHICLE HAVING A CAMERA SYSTEM
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The invention relates generally to a mirror assembly for an automotive vehicle.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Side-view mirrors, which grant a driver of a motor vehicle a view toward the exterior sides of the vehicle, are ubiquitous in motor vehicles. In the future, it is intended for the customary side-view mirrors to be substituted by or supplemented with camera monitor systems. In this way, a view toward the sides and vehicle surroundings is granted in that images recorded by cameras are displayed on monitors to a driver of a motor vehicle.
[0003] Side-view mirrors are arranged on a housing typically mounted to the vehicle at or near the A-pil!ars. The mirror housings are commonly moveable between extended and folded positions. The folded positions can be used to protect the mirrors in various situations, such as car washes. The folded positions can also be used to reduce the exterior width of the vehicle, e.g. for parking in tight spaces.
[0004] For an arrangement of cameras of camera-based mirror substitute/supplementai systems on vehicles, in particular as a substitute/supplement for exterior mirrors or side mirrors, cameras may be mounted to the side of the vehicle on the mirror housing itself. However, the field of view of the camera will change whenever the mirror housing is folded. [000S] The background description provided herein is for the purpose of generally presenting the context of the disclosure. Work of the presently named inventors, to the extent it is described in this background section, as well as aspects of the description that may not otherwise qualify as prior art at the time of filing, are neither expressly nor impliedly admitted as prior art against the present disclosure.

[0025] The camera 122, 122a is secured to the mirror mounting element 148 such that the camera field of view does not rotate/move whether the mirror housing 144 is in the first position 145a or the second position 145b.
[0026] In the embodiment shown the camera adjustment mechanisms 148 comprise arched slots 147a, 147b defined by the mirror mounting element 146 and fasteners 149a, 149b which extend through the slot and are secured to a camera mounting element 126 mainly located within the mirror mounting element 146. The camera 122, 122a is fixably secured to the camera mounting element 126. Fiowever, the camera mounting element 126 is rotatable relative to the mirror mounting element 146 allowing adjustment as illustrate by the arrows shown in FIG. 5.
[0027] Alternatively, the camera mounting element 126 may be fixably secured to the mirror mounting element 146 and the camera 122, 122a may be rotated within the camera mounting element 126 via adjustment mechanisms 148.
[0028] In a further embodiment, an image recorded by the camera(s) 122, 122a-122b may be shown on a display 136 to facilitate adjustment of the camera field of view. The display 136 may also be part of an external device configured with the camera(s) 122, 122a-122b such that the image can be seen by a person external to the vehicle 100. [0031] A further embodiment of mirror assembly 140 proposed here additionally comprises at least one sensor. The at least one sensor used can for example to make additional functionality of the mirror assembly 140 possible, for example by virtue of a distance sensor. For example, at least one ultrasonic sensor may be arranged in the mirror assembly 140, 140a and the mirror housing 144 may be moved to the first position 145a by the control unit 132 if an obstacle which may collide with the mirror housing 144 is detected.
[0032] In a further embodiment, the second camera/device comprises the additional devices, such as radio antenna, position light, heating elements, etc.
[0033] Referring to FIG. 6, a field of view of a camera of a mirror assembly for a vehicle may be calibrated using an image from the camera. Flow chart 800 dispiays the steps undertaken by the calibration process. At step 610, an image of a field of view of a camera is shown on a display. Next at step 620, the camera field of view is rotated with at least one camera adjustment mechanism to rotate an orientation of the field of view. At step 630, an orientation of the image on the display is adjusted with a camera calibration system,
