Description

AN ABDUCTION APPARATUS
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an abduction apparatus adjustable according to the patient's height and weight to keep the hip abducted after hip replacement.
Background of the Invention
Today, in parallel with the increase in musculoskeletal problems due to the prolongation of life expectancy, the number of total hip replacement (THR) surgeries is gradually increasing. Total hip replacement surgery is the replacement of a severely damaged hip with an artificial joint. It is a surgical treatment method applied for degenerative joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis, advanced ages of developmental hip dislocation and femoral neck fracture. The main purpose of the application of surgical treatment is to increase the functional level and quality of life by means of reducing pain and increasing stabilization and movement capacity.
In extreme movements that exceed the limits of the prosthesis, dislocation may occur in the prosthesis. Therefore, care should be taken against the signs of dislocation of the prosthesis. The stability/continuity of the femoral part in the acetabular socket is quite important to prevent the prosthesis dislocation. Physicians and nurses help prevent the dislocation of the prosthesis by training the patient on how to abduct the leg. In addition, a pad is placed between the legs of the patients to keep the hip in abduction after total hip replacement applications. Pads used for this purpose in clinics are generally simple. For this purpose, position pads with different features for the problem have also been developed over the years. Although the developed position pads are more effective than other pads in the hip abduction process, they do not fully meet the needs due to their lack of individual-based adjustment feature, not being easy to use, and not being ergonomic.
In the state of the art, the apparatus and pads used today after total hip replacement surgery are not adjustable according to the patient's height and weight in order to provide a gap between the lower extremities. The disadvantage of these products is that they are not formed according to a certain standard. They cannot be specifically adjusted for each individual. Since it is not adjustable according to the height and weight of the patient, difficulties are encountered in the process of use. The pads that are used are especially large for short patients and insufficient for tall patients. It is a disadvantage that hip opening cannot be achieved at the recommended 15°-20° angle. Due to this disadvantage, this product, length and width of which can be adjusted according to height and weight, is needed. In addition, pads used in clinical areas do not have the feature of being adjustable according to individual’s characteristics, adjusting the degree between the legs, standing use and movable side leg sections for standing use.
The products used today are standard and cannot be adjusted according to the height and weight of the patient. In addition, it cannot provide the recommended opening during standing and walking, in other words, it does not allow the patient's movement. In this case, the recommended 15°-20° extremity opening cannot be achieved and maintained. Failure to provide proper extremity opening after total hip replacement surgeries causes dislocation of the prosthesis, resulting in failure to achieve the expected result from the surgery, maybe a second surgery, an increase in the cost of care, longer occupation of hospital beds, and increased morbidity and mortality.
The Problems Solved with the Invention The objective of the present invention is to provide an abduction apparatus to keep the patient's lower extremity opening fixed after hip replacement surgery.
The objective of the present invention is to provide an abduction apparatus which can be adjusted according to the height and weight of the patient in order to adjust the lower extremity opening after hip replacement.
The objective of the present invention is to provide an abduction apparatus which allows the patient to walk without disrupting the lower extremity opening after hip replacement.
