Abstract

The present invention relates to the harvesting of natural rubber latex more particularly is directed to a device of simple construction which can accurately and uniformly cut the rubber tree bark to exude the latex. The invention further relates to a method of operating the device on the rubber tree. The device (100) for harvesting natural rubber latex and the said device comprises a primary housing unit (101), secondary housing unit (102), wheel assembly unit (103), gear box housing unit (104), motor assembly unit (105) and at least one handle (106).

Description

Title: Device for Harvesting Natural Rubber Latex and Method thereof CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
[0001] The present application claims priority from the Provisional Application No. 201841015515 filed on April 24, 2018; the full disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference herein.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The present invention relates to the harvesting of natural rubber latex more particularly is directed to a device of simple construction which can accurately and uniformly cut the rubber tree bark to exude the latex. The invention further relates to a method of operating the device on the rubber tree.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] Rubber trees are primarily cultivated at plantations in the tropics and subtropics, especially in Southeast Asia and Western Africa which are the major source of Natural Rubber. Asia continues to dominate the world supply of natural rubber, providing for 92% of total world production. Rubber Trees typically reach 20-30 meter in height on rubber plantations, and are capable of producing commercial quantities of latex when they are about 7 years of age, depending on climate and location of the plantation. Economical life span of a rubber tree is between 15 to 20 years, but may extend past 25 years in the hands of a skilled laborer. [0004] The signs of shortage of skilled laborers in the rubber sector are a cause of concern for the planters of small landholdings as this would lead to shortage of natural rubber due to non-extraction. At present the extraction of latex is done by skilled labor using a special knife. This requires a special skill and considerable experience, further it is a very tedious job. The manual process also affects the health of the person engaged in the rubber tapping. Additionally, finding skilled laborers may be burdensome and may require higher compensation.
[0005] While there are numerous tools available in the market to reduce the amount of labor and time required for tapping and collecting rubber, none of them is effective. Hence, there remains a need in the art to develop a device which should be inexpensive to manufacture, and should tap latex from rubber trees automatically and efficiently. The present invention satisfies these needs, as well as others, and generally overcomes the deficiencies found in the background art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [0006] The present invention discloses a device (100) for harvesting natural rubber latex and the said device comprises a primary housing unit (101), secondary housing unit (102), wheel assembly unit (103), gear box housing unit (104), motor assembly unit (105) and at least one handle (106).
[0007] Another aspect of the invention relates to the method of harvesting the latex from the rubber tree using the device (100) comprising the steps of: a. holding at least one handle of the device; b. positioning the primary cutter unit near the rubber tree bark; c. switching ON the device; d. cutting the bark tree using primary cutter by moving the device along the tree bark using means and guide wheel; and the rotational mechanism of the primary cutter is facilitated by motor in motor assembly unit and gear system in gear box housing unit e. optionally, repeating the above step d. at various portions of the rubber tree; f. switching OFF the device; g. cutting front and back portion of rubber tree bark, using secondary cutter by releasing lever manually and operating using secondary cutter guide rail and spring assembly ; h. manually closing the lever; and
1 collecting the rubber latex [0008] The device can be used by skilled or unskilled persons to perform the activity of tapping on the rubber tree. The device can facilitate in resolving the issue of shortage of skilled laborers and lead to more productivity.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The combinations of features illustrated provide representative embodiments for typical applications. Those of ordinary skill in the art may recognize similar applications or implementations consistent with the present disclosure, e.g., ones in which components or processes are arranged in a slightly different order than shown in the embodiments in the Figures. Those of ordinary skill in the art will recognize that the teachings of the present disclosure may be applied to other applications or implementations.

[0013] Referring to illustrative fig. 1, Device (100) comprises a Primary housing unit (101), Secondary housing unit (102), Wheel assembly unit (103), Gear box housing unit
(104), Motor assembly unit (105) and at least one handle (106).
[0014] Referring again to illustrative fig. 1, the primary housing unit (101) is mounted with a primary cutter unit (1), a disc (2), and a means (3).
[0015] Referring to illustrative fig. 1, 2, 3, and 4, the secondary housing unit (102) located on the upper portion of the primary housing unit and is arranged with secondary cutter (4), secondary cutter guide rail (5), spring assembly (6) and a lever (7).
[0016] Referring to illustrative fig. 1 and 3, the wheel assembly unit (103) is attached to the main housing unit, and comprises guide wheel (8), guide wheel holder (9), spring assembly (10) and a wheel holder guide rail (11). [0017] Referring to illustrative fig. 1, the gear box housing unit (104) is attached to the main housing unit, preferably below the main housing unit and the gear box housing comprises gear system with components such as gear(s), shaft(s), and bearings and the gear box housing is provided to house these components.
[0018] Referring to again to illustrative fig. 1, the motor assembly unit (105) is attached to the primary housing unit and the gear box housing unit and comprises motor.
[0019] Referring to illustrative fig. 1 and 4, the primary cutter unit mounted in the primary housing unit, is provided with a cutter holder (12) and at least three cutter blades (13), and the primary cutter unit is provided in such a way so as to perform tapping by making a cut in the bark of rubber tree to harvest the latex. The blades are shaped and positioned to cut the rubber tree bark horizontally without much manual effort to the person operating the device.
[0020] In an embodiment, referring to 1 and 5, the primary housing unit (101) is provided with primary housing unit lid (14) [0021] In an embodiment, referring to fig. 1 and 5, the disc (2) mounted in the primary housing unit, is positioned in such a way to facilitate or provide smooth movement of the primary cutter unit over rubber tree bark and to prevent the blades not to cut deep into the trees. The disc is clamped to cutter holder using disc clamping bush (15). [0022] In an embodiment, the means (3) arranged in the primary housing unit, guides the primary cutter unit while cutting the tree bark, provided and positioned in such a way to adjust and align the cutter blades according to thickness of the tree bark and diameter of the rubber tree.
[0023] In an embodiment, the means (3) is a provided with a spring mechanism and usually includes a spring and a spring holder.
[0024] In an embodiment, the secondary cutter (4) arranged in the secondary housing unit (102), allows the person harvesting rubber latex to cut the front and back portion of the rubber tree bark which is not tapped by using the primary cutter unit. The movement of the secondary cutter is operated by secondary cutter guide rail (5), and a spring assembly (6), arranged in the secondary housing unit. The secondary cutter operation is initiated manually by the person operating the device, with the release of the lever (7) mounted to the secondary housing unit, and when initiated the movement of secondary cutter is facilitated by secondary cutter guide rail, and spring assembly.
[0025] In an embodiment, the guide wheel (8) assembled to the wheel assembly unit, positioned and provided to support the device while cutting the bark of the rubber tree. The guide wheel also helps in balancing the tapping device during the cutting/tapping process. The guide wheel is mounted to a guide wheel holder (9), the guide wheel holder facilitates in adjusting the movement of the wheel according to the thickness of the tree as well as curves in the tree. The movement of the guide wheel holder is provided by spring assembly (10) and wheel holder guide rail (11). The whole function of the wheel assembly unit is to cut the bark of the rubber tree with required standard measurement which can be in the range of 1.6 to 2.5mm depth.
[0026] In an embodiment, referring to fig. 1 and 5, the gear box housing unit is provided with a gear box unit lid (16) and attached preferably below the primary housing unit via the lid (14). The gear box housing comprises gear system with components such as gear(s), shaft(s), and bearings and the gear box housing is provided to house these components. The gear box housing provides mechanical support for the moving components, also protects the components from dust and other impurities. The gear box housing unit generally has a fluid-tight container for holding the lubricant that bathes the components. [0027] In an embodiment, the gear system is provided with six gears. The gear system is provided to manage the torque of the main cutter, while cutting the rubber tree bark.
[0028] In an embodiment, referring to fig. 1 and 4, the motor assembly unit is attached to the primary housing unit and the gear box housing unit and comprises motor such as a 12 DC motor having higher RPM. The motor assembly unit is provided with a motor cover (17) for protecting the motor which is inside the motor assembly unit. The closing cover is provided in such a way that it can be removed, to facilitate in evacuating any excess heat produced while running the motor.
[0029] In an embodiment, the motor is run by external electric source or external battery system or external rechargeable battery pack such as a 5000 mah 12 V. The externally battery source is connected via wire to the motor. The motor along with the gear system facilitates driving of the primary cutter unit.
[0030] In an embodiment, referring to fig. 2, the device is provided with a switch (18) to on or off the motor or the driving mechanism of the device.
[0031] Referring to an illustrative fig 1, 2 and 3, the device is provided with at least one handle (106), to hold the device and facilitates smooth movement of the device over the tree bark. The device is further provided with one or more additional handles, preferably one more handle, more preferably two more handles (107) and (108) which further makes the person operating the device to hold the device firmly, properly and thereby achieving the right balance of the device. [0032] In certain embodiments, the material of the device is selected from nylon, aluminum, stainless steel and plastic or any such suitable material.
[0033] Another aspect of the invention relates to a method of harvesting natural rubber latex from rubber tree using the device (100) comprising the steps of: a. holding at least one handle of the device; b. positioning the primary cutter unit near the rubber tree bark; c. switching ON the device d. cutting the bark tree using primary cutter by moving the device along the tree bark using means and guide wheel; and the rotational mechanism of the primary cutter is facilitated by motor in motor assembly unit and gear system in gear box housing unit; e. optionally, repeating the above step d at various portions of the rubber tree; f. switching OFF the device; g. cutting front and back portion of rubber tree bark, using secondary cutter by releasing lever manually and operating using secondary cutter guide rail and spring assembly; h. manually closing the lever ; i. collecting the rubber latex [0034] Few advantages of aforementioned invention are provided below:
• Highly- skilled rubber tapping can be easily done with the help of the device
• Usage of the device will increase life of the Rubber Tree by 20%
• Reduce effects of tiring manual tapping job, which affects the health of the laborer by 80 % · Increase the yield of the latex of the rubber tree.

Claims

Claims:
1. A Device for harvesting natural rubber latex comprising
a primary housing unit comprises a primary cutter unit;
a secondary housing unit comprises a secondary cutter;
a wheel assembly unit comprises a guide wheel;
a gear box housing unit comprises a gear system;
a motor assembly unit comprises a motor; and
at least one handle.
2. The device according to claim 1, wherein the primary housing unit further comprises a disc, and a means.
3. The device according to claim 1, wherein the secondary housing unit further comprises a secondary cutter guide rail, a spring assembly and a lever.
4. The device according to claim 1, wherein the wheel assembly unit further comprises a guide wheel holder, a spring assembly and a wheel holder guide rail.
5. The device according to claim 1, wherein the primary cutter unit includes a cutter holder and at least three cutter blades and the primary cutter unit is provided to make a cut in the bark of the rubber tree to harvest the latex.
6. The device according to claim 2, wherein the disc facilitates smooth movement of the primary cutter unit over rubber tree bark.
7. The device according to claim 2, wherein the means is provided to guide the primary cutter unit while cutting the tree bark, positioned to adjust and align the cutter blades according to thickness of the tree bark and diameter of the rubber tree.
8. The device according to claims 1 and 3, wherein the secondary cutter allows the person operating the device to cut the front and back portion of the rubber tree bark which is not tapped by using the primary cutter unit; the movement of the secondary cutter is operated by secondary cutter guide rail, and a spring assembly; and the secondary cutter operation is initiated manually by releasing lever mounted to the secondary cutter unit.

The device according to claim 1 and 4, wherein the guide wheel is positioned and provided to support the device while cutting the bark of the rubber tree; the guide wheel holder facilitates in adjusting the movement of the wheel according to the thickness of the tree as well as curves in the tree to uniformly cut the bark with required standard measurement of depth; and the movement of the guide wheel holder is provided by spring assembly and wheel holder guide rail.
10. The device according to claim 1, wherein the motor is 12 V DC motor along with the gear system facilitates driving of the primary cutter unit.

The device according to claim 1, wherein, the handle facilitates for smooth movement of the device over the tree bark, further the device is provided with two more handles to help the person operating the device to hold the device firmly, properly and thereby achieving the right balance of the device.
12. A method of harvesting natural rubber latex from rubber tree using the device comprising the steps of: a. holding at least one handle of the device; b. positioning the primary cutter unit near the rubber tree bark; c. switching ON the device; d. cutting the bark tree using primary cutter by moving the device along the tree bark using means and guide wheel; and the rotational mechanism of the primary cutter is facilitated by motor in motor assembly unit and gear system in gear box housing unit; e. optionally, repeating the above step d at various portions of the rubber tree; f. switching OFF the device; g. cutting front and back portion of rubber tree bark, using secondary cutter by releasing lever manually and operating using secondary cutter guide rail and spring assembly; h. manually closing the lever; and i. collecting the rubber latex.
