Abstract
Pharmacist in hospital may require to make extemporaneous preparation from tablet into liquid medication especially for patient that having trouble to swallow tablet or children. Conventionally, mortar and pestle are used in extemporaneous preparation. However, this method is not efficient as there are losses during preparation. This will result in significant waste of medication in the long run. It also takes a longer time to prepare the medication using this method as it involves manual process. According to the present invention there is a tablet grinding and mixing device (10) comprising: a grinding device (20) with a grinding mechanism (21) and grinding container (22); a mixing device (30) with a mixing mechanism (31) and a mixing container (32) connected to said grinding device (20) wherein said mixing container (32) having a top with an opening (36).
Description
The present invention relates generally to a tablet grinding and mixing device, more particularly to a tablet grinding and mixing device for extemporaneous preparation.
Pharmacists in clinical settings such as a hospital and pharmacy are required to make extemporaneous preparations from tablet into liquid medication, especially for patients that are unable or have difficulty in swallowing medications in tablet or capsule form. Conventionally, mortar and pestle have been used for the past century in extemporaneous preparation. However, this method is not efficient as it takes a long time to prepare the medication using this method as it involves manual process. Furthermore, this manual process yields inconsistent results as it depends on the technique of the personnel involved in the preparation, usually resulting in a loss of drug during the grinding process.
US20150283034A1 discloses a portable tablet crushing and mixing device for extemporaneous preparation. However, this device may take a significant amount of time for the mixture to be prepared since the tablet and the fluid is crushed and mixed in the same container.
Therefore, there is a need for a tablet grinding and mixing device that can maximize the crushed tablet with minimal losses and prepare the medicine in a shorter time period.
According to the present invention there is a tablet grinding and mixing device comprising: a grinding device with a grinding mechanism and grinding container; a mixing device with a mixing mechanism and a mixing container connected to said grinding device wherein said mixing container having a top with an opening; characterized in that a connector on the external portion of said grinding container configured to attach to said opening of said mixing container; and an aperture on the bottom of said grinding container forming a passage from said grinding container to said mixing container.
Preferably, said grinding container is generally a cylindrical shape.
Preferably, a funnel on the lower portion of said grinding container.
Preferably, said connector and said opening is secured by a turn locking mechanism.
Preferably, said grinding mechanism includes a shaft and spring connected to a grinder.
Preferably, said spring is secured by a spring support.
Preferably, said shaft is secured to said grinding container by a wing screw.
Preferably, said shaft having a sweeper blade.
Preferably, said mixing device having a speed controller.
Preferably, said mixing container is generally a cylindrical shape.
The above and other aspects, features, and advantages of certain embodiments of the present disclosure will be more apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an example of a prior art of a tablet crushing and mixing device that is used in extemporaneous preparation.
Figure 2 shows the complete assembly of the tablet grinding and mixing device 10 as in the present invention which primarily comprises of a grinding device 20 and mixing device 30. It is preferable that the grinding device 20 is located on top of mixing device 30 since the present invention uses gravity principle that allowing the grinded tablet to fall into mixing device 30.
The grinding device 20 has a grinding mechanism 21 and a grinding container 22 that is preferably a cylindrical shape container that is made of transparent material such as glass or plastic. The grinding container 22 is also detachably connected to the grinding mechanism 21 and it is preferably located under grinding mechanism 21.
The mixing device 30 that has a mixing mechanism 31 and a mixing container 32. The mixing container 32 is preferably a cylindrical shape container that is transparent which can be made of plastic or glass. The mixing container 32 is also detachably connected to the mixing mechanism 31 and it is preferably located above mixing mechanism 31.
Figure 3 depicts the grinding mechanism 21 comprises a grinding motor 21a which is powered by an external power supply via a first power inlet 23 or by internal energy storage (not shown). A switch 21b is located on the top portion of the grinding mechanism 21. A voltage controller board 21c is connected to the motor 21a, switch 21b and first power inlet 23. This voltage controller board 21c will provide appropriate supply to motor 21a. In the present invention, a 6V DC motor is used in the grinding mechanism 21. A speed variable mechanism 21d is connected to motor 21a and deliver the rotation power to a shaft socket 21e.
Figure 4 shows the grinding container 22 which has a shaft 24 having one end connected to the shaft socket 21e and another end to a male grinder 25. Shaft 24 is secured to grinding container 22 by a wing screw 25c that is located below the male grinder 25. In another embodiment of the invention, a wing screw 25c is used to secure the end of shaft 24 that has male grinder 25 and female grinder 25a. This is to allow easy maintenance of the shaft 24 and male grinder 25 since wing screw 25c can be easily unfastened without using a screw driver.
In order to ensure that the tablet inserted into the grinding container 22 is grinded optimally by male grinder 25, a spring 26 is installed having one end connected to male grinder 25. Another end of spring 26 is hold by a spring support 26a that is secured to the grinding container 22. During grinding process, the spring 26 will push down male grinder 25 so that the tablet will be grinded faster. It is preferably that spring 26 has the optimum stiffness so that male grinder 25 could grind the tablet to the desired effect.
At one end of the grinding container 22 that is near male grinder 25, there is a funnel 27 which is for directing tablets in grinding container 22 to the male grinder 25. A sweeper blade 28 is installed perpendicular to shaft 24 and above spring support 26a. The sweeper blade 28 will rotate with shaft 24 and sweep tablets residue on the sidewall of funnel 27.
The bottom portion of the grinding container 22 also has a connector 29 for connecting grinding device 20 and mixing device 30. In the present invention, the size of connector 29 is fit to be same as mixing container 32.
In the present invention, there is a small gap 25b that is located between the lower end of male grinder 25 and female grinder 25a. This gap 25b will allow the grinded tablet in the grinding container 22 to fall into the mixing device 30.
Figure 5 shows the mixing device 30 that comprises of a mixing mechanism 31 and a mixing container 32. Mixing mechanism 31 is powered by an external power supply via a second power inlet 33. The speed of the mixing motor 31a in the mixing mechanism 31 is controlled by a speed controller 34. This speed controller 34 also function as a switch. A speed controller board 31b is connected to the motor 31a, second power inlet 33 and speed controller 34.
A mixing blade 35 for mixing the grinded tablet and liquid is located inside the mixing container 32. When mixing mechanism 31 and a mixing container 32 is connected, a motor clutch 31c that is connected to mixing motor 31a and a blade clutch 35a that is connected to mixing blade 35 are also joined together.
The top of the mixing container 32 has an opening 36 for filling and pouring out liquid medicine. Connector 29 at the bottom portion of grinding container 22 is attachable to opening 36 to connect grinding device 20 and mixing device 30. In the present invention, it is preferably that connector 29 is secured to the opening 36 by using a turn locking mechanism.
When the extemporaneous preparation of the medicine using the tablet grinding and mixing device 10 as in the present invention, firstly the base liquid such as syrup with certain flavor or no flavor is poured into mixing container 32. Then the mixing device 30 is started and the motor speed is set to the desired rate of mixture. After that, tablets are filled inside the grinding container and the grinding device 20 is started. The grinded tablets slowly fall into the mixing container 32 through gap 25b.
A comparison has been made between the conventional method of using mortar and pestle and the present invention. The preparation time using mortar and pestle took more than 15 minutes while the present invention only took less than 5 minutes. The shorter preparation time means that the waiting time for dispensing the medicine to the patient also been reduced. The wasted medicine using the present invention also has been determined to be less than 1% compared to more than 3% using mortar and pestle. Therefore, the present invention is faster in extemporaneous preparation and less waste of the medicine.
The tablet grinding and mixing device 10 described herein can advantageously be used for enteral delivery. Other specific uses of the device could include, but would not be limited to, improving the general process of medication grinding, mixing and administering to children or patient who cannot swallow tablets or who might prefer a flavored suspension. The device could also be beneficial for the administration of medication to animals as it is often difficult to get animals to swallow medications.
Further, although generally referred to hereinabove as a medication grinding apparatus or a method of grinding a medication, it is to be understood that vitamins, supplements, and other pills/tablets can be used with the device. It is also to be understood that the terms “pill” or “tablet” can be used interchangeably.
It will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that the embodiments described herein are exemplary of inventions that may have greater scope than any of the singular descriptions presented. There may be alterations made in these examples without departing from the scope of the invention disclosed. For example, any aspect of the above described method and device for simplified crushing, liquefying, and preparation of medications may have components with different shapes or designs within different embodiments. For instance, the shape or dimensions of the grinder burrs may change and may vary in design from one embodiment to another, but not overall function. These or other features may change in different embodiments.
Claims (10)
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) comprising a grinding device (20) with a grinding mechanism (21) and grinding container (22); a mixing device (30) with a mixing mechanism (31) and a mixing container (32) connected to said grinding device 20 wherein said mixing container (32) having a top with an opening (36); characterized in that a connector (29) on the external portion of said grinding container (22) configured to attach to said opening (36) of said mixing container (32); and a gap (25b) on the bottom of said grinding container (22) forming a passage from said grinding container (22) to said mixing container (32).
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said grinding container (22) is generally a cylindrical shape.
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein a funnel (27) on the lower portion of said grinding container (22).
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said connector (29) and said opening (36) is secured by a turn locking mechanism.
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said grinding mechanism (21) includes a shaft (24) and spring (26) connected to a male grinder (25) and female grinder (25a).
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 5, wherein said spring (26) is secured by a spring support (26a).
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 5, wherein said shaft (24) is secured to said grinding container (22) by a wing screw (25c).
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 7, wherein said shaft having a sweeper blade (28).
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said mixing device (30) having a speed controller (34).
- A tablet grinding and mixing device (10) as claimed in claim 1, wherein said mixing container (32) is generally a cylindrical shape.
