Definitions
- the invention relates to the oil and gas industry and can find application in stimulating an underground formation using hydraulic fracturing operations, in particular, during temporary isolation of hydraulic fracturing, repeated hydraulic fracturing, and also when killing wells.
- multizone stimulation of the oil reservoir is used, which means placing several perforation intervals in the cased well bore and creating several fractures as a result of hydraulic fracturing.
- some hydraulic fractures lose their effectiveness and there is a need for temporary isolation of the perforation interval for the duration of repeated hydraulic fracturing (refrac) or other repair work (temporary killing of the well).
- particles and fibers from degradable material are not always available in sufficient quantities or the dispersed composition of particles (size distribution) does not allow temporarily isolate cracks and perforations in the well.
- inert particles used for temporary isolation during borehole operations in the form of milled minerals or salts partially damage the oil reservoir when injected into the well, then there is a mudding of the formation by small particles having a size close to the size of the pores.
- formation damage effect is meant the infiltration of small inert particles into the pore space of a fracture (in particular, into the pores between proppant granules) or into the pores of the surrounding rock. Since such inert particles are not soluble in the well fluid or reservoir oil, the permeability of the surrounding rock and the fractured fracture is irreversibly reduced, which eliminates the effect of stimulation of the well.
- isolation of an interval, perforation, or crack in a rock is understood to mean a significant decrease (5 or more times) in the influx of processing fluid through the isolation object after placement of the insulating suspension in the form of a filter layer. At the same time, part of the liquid continues to be filtered through the filter layer.
- a measure of interval isolation is the pressure difference across the isolation object ( ⁇ in bars).
- the killing operation it is necessary to compensate for the pore pressure of the rock by hydrostatic pressure of the killing fluid, but at the same time to avoid fluid flow between the formation and the borehole. To do this, the permeability of fractured rock intervals or artificial fracturing is reduced. After jamming and repair work, it is necessary to restore the permeability of the bottomhole rock in order to resume the production of oil-containing fluid.
- One of the methods for killing a well is to use additives or block compositions based on finely divided solid phase (particles). So, in practice, the REABLOCK TM block composition (M-1 SWACO, a Schlumberger Company, USA) is used. This blocking composition for jamming is based on a mixture of carbonate particles of various disperse composition.
- Such particles clog permeable rock and prevent absorption of the working fluid.
- it is necessary to restore the permeability of the formation, which is achieved by acid treatment of the plugged zone. But even acid treatment does not completely restore permeability, which reduces well productivity after killing.
- a method for temporarily isolating a well interval begins with the injection of a first suspension into the well, which contains a viscous carrier fluid, degraded particles and degraded fibers until the formation of the first filter layer.
- a second suspension containing a viscous carrier fluid, non-degradable particles and degradable fibers is pumped into the well until a second filter layer is formed.
- the first and second suspensions do not mix and the volume of the first suspension refers to the volume of the second suspension in a ratio of 1: 5 to 2: 1.
- a second filter layer on top of the first filter layer creates a double insulating layer that reliably isolates (plugs) the borehole intervals with high fluid loss.
- the method consists of pumping a first suspension into a well containing a viscous carrier fluid, degraded particles and degraded fibers until a first filter layer is formed. Then, a second suspension containing a viscous carrier fluid, non-degradable particles and degraded fibers is pumped into the well until a second filter layer is formed.
- the first and second the suspensions do not mix and the volume of the first suspension refers to the volume of the second suspension in a proportion of 1: 5 to 2: 1.
- the pressure in the well is increased to a level higher than the hydraulic fracture pressure and hydraulic fracturing is performed in a new place or repeated hydraulic fracturing for the selected hydraulic fracture.
- the first and second suspensions do not mix and the volume of the first suspension refers to the volume of the second suspension in a ratio of 1: 5 to 2: 1.
- the formed double filter layer creates a reliable, but gentle insulation for the selected interval of the wellbore, which allows to reduce the pressure in the wellbore (well killing).
- Figure 1 shows a graph comparing the effectiveness of the operations of insulation of hydraulic fractures using various insulating compositions delivered to the place of isolation.
- the proposed methods are based on pumping suspensions of particles and fibers into the intervals of the well where temporary isolation is necessary (to reduce the flow of fluid from the wellbore into the rock). Pumping a portion of the suspension through the porous rock leads to the creation of a filter cake, which self-compacts over time.
- the composition of the formed filter layer determines the strength and stability of the filter layer.
- double filter layer and “insulating layer” should be understood in the framework of this description as equivalent concepts.
- the term “gentle insulation” in the framework of this disclosure means that over time the material of the filter layer degrades and the conductivity of the rock (or hydraulic fractures) is restored.
- the term “killing a well” means stopping the production of oil fluid or inflow of formation fluid into the wellbore using various measures and differs from the operation of suspension of the well by closing the valves at the wellhead (when high pressure is maintained).
- a method for temporarily isolating a well interval comprises the steps of:
- the first and second suspensions are pumped sequentially.
- the first and second suspensions do not mix and the volume of the first suspension refers to the volume of the second suspension in a ratio of 1: 5 to 2: 1.
- the formed second filter layer on top of the first filter layer creates a double insulating layer that reliably isolates (plugs) the borehole intervals with high fluid loss.
- an aqueous solution of a thickening polymer is selected as a viscous carrier fluid.
- a viscous carrier fluid acts as a carrier for particles of the first and second suspensions.
- degraded particles and degraded fibers are selected from the class of degradable polymers, for example, polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, and other degradable polyesters.
- the second filter layer has great stability in an aqueous medium, and, for example, calcium carbonate, silicon oxide, aluminosilicates, and bauxites are selected as non-degradable particles for the second suspension.
- the first suspension has a concentration of degradable particles from 8 to 90 kg / m 3 and a concentration of degradable fibers from 2 to 12 kg / m 3 .
- the second suspension has a concentration of non-degradable particles from 15 to 100 kg / m 3 and a concentration of degradable fibers in the range from 1 to 4 kg / m 3 .
- a higher concentration of particles in suspensions leads to difficulties in the operation of pumping and mixing equipment (particle clogging of bottlenecks in the equipment).
- degradable fibers In the first suspension, degradable fibers have a length of 3 to 10 mm.
- degradable particles In the first suspension, degradable particles have a size in the range from 0.01 to 5 mm.
- non-degradable particles In the second suspension (injected to create a second filter layer), non-degradable particles have a size in the range from 0.01 to 1 mm.
- the first and second suspension do not mix when fed to the wellhead. Additionally, portions of the first and second suspension can be separated by an additional portion of a viscous liquid (aqueous thickening polymer solution).
- a viscous liquid aqueous thickening polymer solution
- the first and second suspensions do not mix (the second suspension is pumped after the first) and the volume of the first suspension refers to the volume of the second suspension in a ratio of 1: 5 to 2: 1.
- the pressure in the well is increased to a level higher than the hydraulic fracture pressure and hydraulic fracturing is performed in a new location (or repeated hydraulic fracturing for the selected hydraulic fracture).
- a new (or expanded crack) is filled with a suspension of proppant (for example, coarse sand) and the pressure is reduced to close the wedged crack.
- a new hydraulic fracture (or extended old hydraulic fracture) increases the stimulation zone of the formation.
- Degradable particles and degradable fibers are selected from the class of degradable polymers, for example, polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid and other degradable polyesters.
- non-degradable particles for the second suspension for example, calcium carbonate, silica, aluminosilicates, bauxites are selected.
- the degradable fibers in the first suspension have a length of 3 to 10 mm.
- degradable particles In the first suspension, degradable particles have a size in the range from 0.01 to 5 mm.
- non-degradable particles have a size in the range from 0.01 to 1 mm.
- the first and second suspension do not mix when fed to the wellhead. Additionally, portions of the first and second suspension can be separated by an additional portion of a viscous liquid (aqueous thickening polymer solution).
- a viscous liquid aqueous thickening polymer solution
- the first suspension of degradable fibers dispersed in the carrier fluid is pumped into the jamming zone.
- the first filter layer filter cake
- the permeability of the first (base) filter layer is about 1 Darcy, which is not enough to kill the well, but enough to pump a second suspension of particles that will go into the zone with a high rate of loss of the processing fluid.
- a second suspension based on a carrier fluid is pumped into the jamming zone, in which finely dispersed (inert) particles are dispersed.
- the second stage is carried out immediately after the first, while the first and second suspensions do not mix when pumped. This allows you to create a second filter layer on top of the first, and such a double layer creates a strong filter cake with low permeability.
- degraded particles and degraded fibers are selected from the class of degradable polymers, for example, polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid and other degradable polyesters.
- Time decomposition depends on the temperature in the well and on the choice of degraded material. For example, there are suspensions of degradable material under the BroadBand Sequence TM trademark (Schlumberger) for low, medium, and high temperatures in a well fluid.
- the second filter layer has great stability in an aqueous medium, for example, calcium carbonate, silica, aluminosilicates, bauxites are selected as non-degradable particles for the second suspension.
- the first suspension has a concentration of degradable particles from 8 to 90 kg / m 3 .
- the second suspension has a concentration of non-degradable particles from 15 to 100 kg / m 3 .
- repair work can be carried out.
- the resulting double filter cake is removed by creating a depression in the wellbore (leaching the filter cake by the influx of formation fluid) or by moderate acid treatment (decomposition of calcium carbonate particles in an acidic environment). Since small inert particles from the second suspension did not penetrate into the rock, but were deposited on top of the first filter layer, the permeability of the rock is restored to its original level. Such well killing is classified as gentle killing.
- Example 1 The applicability of a double portion of the suspension to isolate hydraulic fractures.
- a repeated hydraulic fracturing operation was performed on a horizontal well at a depth of 2400 meters drilled in the oil and gas reservoir.
- the well was completed with a multi-stage hydraulic fracturing arrangement with swellable packers.
- the arrangement allows sequentially pumping the insulating pack into hydraulic fractures with numbers 1,2, 3 (through hydraulic fracturing couplings 1, 2, 3).
- MDOZ instantaneous injection stop pressure
- Figure 1 shows the measurement of the instantaneous change in the injection stop (stability of the filter layer) for various pumping options for filter suspensions.
- a thickening agent 3.6 kg / m 3 guar
- the viscosity of the carrier fluid does not allow solid particles and fibers to delaminate when pumped (homogeneous suspension).
- the insulating properties of the double pack of suspensions were tested in comparison with the suspensions supplied to the test unit separately.
- particles of polylactic acid (PMA) were selected.
- the length of the fibers from PMC in the range from 2 to 5 mm.
- the fibers are fully dispersed in a viscous aqueous solution. Particles are added to the suspension with fibers.
- non-degradable (inert) particles for the second suspension particles of various sizes from ground calcium carbonate (CaCO3) were selected.
- Inert particles can also be selected from the group of silicon oxide, aluminosilicates, bauxites with the desired size (in the range from 0.01 to 1 mm).
- a double pack of the first and second suspension also proved to be more effective than a simple mixture of the first and second suspension - in the latter case, the mixture of fibers and particles is not pumped into the test channel (delivery problem).
- Table 4 shows the composition of the suspensions and the combination of two suspensions for temporary isolation of a narrow vertical channel (analogue of a narrow hydraulic fracture), carried out at the installation for testing plugging compositions.
- An example shows that when pumping two suspensions that have good transport properties (pumpability), gentle (without mudding) insulation of the fractured rock is created.
- test results showed that a combination of two filter layers is more effective. Non-degradable particles of the second suspension do not penetrate the first filter layer.
- Killing was performed by sequentially pumping two packs (two suspensions): a 5 m 3 pack based on a fibrous additive (first suspension) followed by pumping a pack (10 m 3 ) of REABLOCK.
- the composition of each suspension is presented in table 6 and 7.
- the block composition is placed under pressure, which indicates the formation of a filter layer (filter cake) on the wall of the well.
- the combined pack turned out to be much more effective than the REABLOCK block composition.
