Description
The present invention relates to a system and method for dynamically adjusting energy consumption of electrical appliances, such as dish washers, TVs, refrigerators and laundry washing machines, based on the unit pricing of electricity.
It is well-known that users have to pay high electricity bills if they have high electricity consumption during peak hours. Increasing the unit price of electricity at peaks hours is a pricing method used worldwide in order to reduce electricity consumption at peak hours and ensure that electricity is supplied reliably.
Among others, a prior art publication in the technical field of the invention may be referred to as KR101600287, which discloses a low power smart video device for varying operation modes according to the energy level of a battery. The device comprises an energy harvesting unit for collecting energy from surrounding environment, a battery for charging and discharging energy transmitted from the energy harvesting unit and a system board. The device enables energy harvesting in situations where the low power smart video device is installed in a region where it is hard to construct power infrastructure or where the low power smart video device needs to be operated with low power, and promotes continuous operations by varying operation modes according to the energy level. Other prior art publications may be referred to as JP2005027690, CN105115241 and US2016205322.
The present invention, on the other hand, addresses the situation where the energy consumption of electrical appliances, such as dish washers, TVs, refrigerators and laundry washing machines can be dynamically controlled and adjusted in order to reduce the user’s electricity bill.
To this end, the present invention provides a system and method whereby electrical appliances operate in low energy mode during peak energy consumption hours whereby electricity bills will be lowered.
The present invention provides a system and method for dynamically adjusting energy consumption of electrical appliances based on pricing as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method for dynamically adjusting energy consumption of electrical appliances, such as dish washers, TVs, refrigerators and laundry washing machines, based on the unit pricing of electricity.
The present invention proposes an electrical household appliance and particularly an image display device, a refrigerator or a laundry machine/dishwasher, having an electronic control unit automatically activating saving mode during electricity peak demand hours. The image display device is preconfigured to activate electrical energy saving mode during predetermined time periods by adjusting screen backlighting to be dimmed in saving mode. The refrigerator activates an alternative low power profile ancillary compressor in saving mode during said predetermined time periods and said laundry machine/dishwasher displays a warning when the appliance is operated during said predetermined time periods.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system for adjusting energy consumption, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the Claims, nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said Claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a simplified general block diagram representation of a system for adjusting energy consumption for a refrigerator according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a simplified general block diagram representation of a system for adjusting energy consumption for a laundry washing machine/dish washer according to the present invention.
Fig. 3 demonstrates a simplified general block diagram representation of a system for adjusting energy consumption for a TV according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an electrical household appliance and particularly an image display device according to a preferred embodiment of the invention.
An image display device operated according to the invention is preconfigured to activate saving mode during predetermined time periods. Activation of saving mode can typically be configured during the initial setup of the TV set or when desired using the setup menu. Alternatively, the TV set can be preconfigured to retrieve the required information and settings from a dedicated server over the Internet upon user confirmation.
Time data is retrieved from the broadcast service provider or teletext and when the preconfigured time period data for the saving mode to be activated is received, a message pops up on the TV screen asking the user whether they want the saving mode to be activated. Depending on the answer the saving mode is activated. If automatic activation of saving mode was selected during the setup process, saving mode is activated without asking for the user’s input at the predetermined time.
In preferred aspects of the present embodiment, saving mode for the image display device entails control of screen backlighting to be dimmed in saving mode as screen backlighting can use a large amount of energy. Saving mode for the image display device further entails automatic setting of turn-off timer to 1 hour in case no input is given to the TV via remote control or other input devices for 1 hour. Therefore, the image display counts down to turns off automatically.
Further, in case of no signal, the system counts down from 1 minute and TV is turned off. As a further alternative or feature to be activated in combination with the earlier saving mode features, maximum sound level is automatically lowered. Typically, when the designated saving mode time period is over, the TV can continue to operate in normal mode.
The present invention further proposes an electrical household appliance and particularly a refrigerator according to a second preferred embodiment of the invention.
In this variation, the user enters the time and date data (time/day/month/year) and the time periods in the day during when unit price of electricity (energy consumption) is highest, lowest and standard during the initial setup process of the refrigerator so that the operation characteristics of the appliance can be determined. Based on the data, the refrigerator adjusts its intensive operation period to fall into the time period when the unit price of electricity is lowest. In addition to the pricing schedule manually entered during setup, unit pricing data (kW/h) can be pulled using the smart home system as explained in line with the first embodiment, i.e. as in the case of the image display device connecting to a remote server to dynamically retrieve the required information.
An ancillary compressor storage (tank) (energy storage apparatus) placed in the refrigerator is filled during the time period when the unit price of electricity is lowest. The stored energy is used during the time period when the unit price of electricity is highest, minimizing the operation of the motor during peak hours. Additionally, the refrigerator will inform the user by displaying a warning when the door is opened during peak hours to minimize refrigerator usage during these periods. For example, during non-peak hours, the refrigerator will warn the user by a sound within 1 minute whereas during peak hours the warning will be issued within 30 seconds and additionally by turning the inside light of the refrigerator on and off to increase the user’s awareness.
The present invention further proposes an electrical household appliance and particularly a laundry washing machine/dish washer according to a third preferred embodiment of the invention.
In this variation, again the user enters the time and date data (time/day/month/year) and the time periods in the day during when unit price of electricity (energy consumption) is highest, lowest and standard during the initial setup process of laundry machines and dish washers so that the operation characteristics of the appliance can be determined. The information can also be pulled from a server over the internet.
Based on this data, the appliance will inform the user by displaying a warning when they want to use the appliance during time periods where the unit price of electricity is highest. If the user wants to operate the appliance regardless, washing operation will be started. Additionally, the user will be informed in case they set up the automatic washing timer during the day and direct the user to use the appliance during time periods where the unit price of electricity is lowest.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes an electrical household appliance preconfigured to activate electrical energy saving mode during predetermined time periods.
In one embodiment of the present invention, said electrical household appliance is an image display device having an electronic control unit automatically controlling screen backlighting to be dimmed in saving mode during said predetermined time periods.
