Abstract

An absorbent article having lateral waist cuffs (2), is disclosed. The absorbent article, preferably a disposable diaper (1) has a top region and a bottom region when the diaper (1) is in flat position. The diaper (1) may have a topsheet (6), backsheet (12) and absorbent core (10) disposed between the topsheet (6) and backsheet (12); a pair of longitudinal side edges, a pair of longitudinally extending leg cuffs (3) attached to that side edges and a pair of laterally extending waist cuffs (2) attached to waist opening edges. One of the laterally extending waist cuff is attached on topsheet (6), is placed in the front waist region. The other one of the laterally extending barrier cuff is attached on topsheet (6), is placed in back waist region. The lateral waist cuffs (2) are made up of a liquid impermeable nonwoven web structure and can separately be attached on top region of the absorbent article. These attached lateral waist cuffs (2) prevent leakage of urine and faeces from the front and back portions of the diaper (1) in use.

Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an absorbent article and a method of manufacturing the article such as; but not limited to, disposable diaper, incontinence diaper, pant, pull up diaper; having liquid impervious lateral waist cuffs perpendicular to the longitudinal leg cuffs to prevent leakage of body waste.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Disposable absorbent articles having waist cuffs, have been issued in the prior art documents.
EP2410966B1 discloses an absorbent article having a waist opening and a pair of leg openings in cooperation with the waist opening. The article includes a first and second waist regions having waist cuff, laying in lateral direction of chasis.
In this article the waist cuff is provided with an elastic sheet that makes the waist cuff more closer to the topsheet surface of the absorbent article that will prevent passing the body leakage into the cuff. Since the waist cuff made up of an elastic sheet may not behave like a pocket to collect leakage of urine or feces. As a consequence, the cuff may not be very effective about collection of leakage. There may be leakage from the upper side of the middle regioned waist cuff pocket.
JP3315993B2 discloses a pant type diaper and a method of manufacturing of the pant. According to the application, the diaper includes both leg openings and waist openings comprising waist elastic members attached along the peripery of the waist opening.
In this diaper the waist cuff is left free from the diaper chasis. Waist cuffs are extending from the waist openings and provided with additional elastic members which means again the peripery of the diaper is surrounded with elastic members to define the pocket.
In this diaper, the body waste can be stored in any part of the waist cuff that turns all peripery of the diaper. It may become disturbing after filled with body exudates.
Additionally, this method of forming a pant having waist cuff is not an economical way to attach the waist cuff at all peripery of the diaper.
EP1 199058A1 discloses a pant type diaper that comprises a liquid impervious leak barrier cuff associated with a waist opening lying on an outer surface of said topsheet and said leak barrier cuff having a fixed end portion lying adjacent one longitudinal end portion of said article. In this diaper, a free end portion extending from said fixed end portion toward the crotch region and an elastic member being stretchable is attached in transverse direction, that again lying on the surface of said topsheet.
In this diaper there might be regions that can be effected from leakages of leg cuffs. Because the leg cuffs are remained under the waist cuff barriers.
In the state of the art, absorbent articles formed with waist cuffs are not efficient about preventing leakage. The body waste is not captured by the waist cuffs properly and can leak out from the waist edges of the diaper.
The waist pockets are formed by two different applications in the state of the art such as;
1 - using elastic web sheets as cuff material and,
2- using elastic member at the end portion of the cuff opening.
Diapers prepared with the first method have problems with regard to the waist cuffs being easily deformed because of using elastically stretchable web materials.
Diapers prepared with the second method have problems with regard to the waist cuffs since the elastic members are attached in a high stretched state that prevents restraining the body leakage because of presence of the cuff opening very close to the topsheet surface. In these diapers said waist cuff is attached at all peripery of the diaper, that will not be comfortable for the users.
The waist cuffs of these diapers are attached on the topsheet surface by covering the leg cuffs. The shape again causes the leakage from the attached side parts of the waist cuffs. Moreover the structure causes skin problems since; the attachments of side parts of the waist cuffs lying on the leg cuffs causes irritation; such as rash or eczema of the wearer.
There is a need to overcome above mentioned problems about waist cuffs.
The present absorbent article is designed to overcome mentioned problems above.
The object of the present invention is preventing skin irritation from the attaching sides of the waist cuff barriers and preventing leakages from side regions of waist cuffs, by positioning the waist cuffs under leg barrier cuffs.
