Description

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING MULTIMEDIA CONTENT
BASED ON ACTIVITY
The present invention relates to a system and method for providing multimedia content based on the activity of the user.
It is well-known that users may want to watch and/or listen to different multimedia content while going through different daily activities. It is time consuming to set up different multimedia content before or during an activity and the user is required to perform this task manually. It would be advantageous to have a system and method that automatically plays the multimedia content based on user activity. Among others, a prior art publication in the technical field of the invention may be referred to as EP2357804A1, which discloses a method for generating a channel recommendation list by modeling a prediction algorithm for IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) applications. The algorithms are based on clustering users according to present and past experiences in a given time interval and the channel preferences and watching behavior of the user. The model is used to predict user's future preferences and create a successful channel recommendation list. Other examples in the prior art may be referred to as WO0191458A2 and US2012096018A1. The present invention, on the other hand, addresses the situation where multimedia content or content lists previously chosen by the user can be played automatically by a multimedia device based on signals by remote devices used as indicators of the predetermined physical activities by the user. In this manner, the user does not need to manually change the content played by the multimedia device when changing to a different activity. It is advantageous and time-saving to be able to automatically access predetermined content during an activity. The present invention provides a system and method for providing multimedia content based on the activity of the user, as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system consisting of remote sensors in signal communication with a multimedia content player such as an image display device so as to effectuate selection of predetermined multimedia content based on predetermined activities.
The present invention proposes a multimedia device such as a TV set playing music contents such as playlists. The multimedia device remotely communicates with at least one remote sensor node such as a network (LAN) node, the latter being coupled to or in signal communication with a remote device or a plurality of remote devices. In accordance with the invention, actively operated state of any electrical domestic device is associated with a certain physical activity of a user and this information is communicated to the multimedia device by said remote sensor node.
The multimedia device comprises an electronic control unit performing multimedia content selection if a certain electrical home appliance is operated. The current activity of the user as associated with the specific device is optionally verified by a heart rate monitor monitoring real-time heart rate of the user. The heart rate information is advantageously used to further characterize the multimedia content's tempo in beats per minute (bpm). Further, the multimedia device generates and stores a history pattern of different multimedia contents and lists in association with remote devices on the basis of time of operation and heart rate information. This is particularly advantageous in that the multimedia device automatically effectuates selection of more refined multimedia content thanks to the history pattern data even if heart rate information is missing.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method for providing multimedia content, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the Claims, nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said Claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates an exemplary general block diagram representation of individual components in a multimedia selection system according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 demonstrates an exemplary general flow diagram of the multimedia selection system according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes a multimedia selection system by which users can watch and/or listen to different multimedia content while going through different daily activities without manually setting up different multimedia content before or during an activity. Therefore, the user is not required to repeatedly perform the same task manually on a daily basis. Multimedia content or content lists such as playlists previously played or set by the user are automatically played by a multimedia device such as a music player, i.e. a hi-fi system or an image display device, i.e. a TV set. According to the present invention, a predetermined multimedia content is playable upon detection of a corresponding remote signal from a predetermined device. More particularly, a predetermined device communicates with the multimedia device so that a predetermined multimedia content list containing at least one multimedia content is played depending on the user activity in association with said predetermined device.
Hardware of the multimedia device is designed to be able to use at least one wired or wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, etc.) communication platform. Typically, an activate/deactivate feature is added to a user interface/remote controller designed for the multimedia device to be directly in communication with the user so that the user can turn on the feature only when desired.
Conventionally, a software module of the internal software of the multimedia device is used by the user to generate content/content lists designated for different activities from different platforms (content providers such as YouTube, Spotify, etc.) or storage devices (USB flash drives, external hard drives, cloud based storage, etc.).
According to the present invention, the multimedia device in the form of a music player or an image display device communicates with at least one remote device so as to recognize signals coming from different electrical/electronical devices (coffee maker, treadmill, smartwatch, etc.) in order to detect user activity.
Typically, the user determines which signal coming from which device corresponds to a certain activity and which content/content list is to be played by the multimedia device during said activity via the user interface. When the designated signal is received by the multimedia device, said multimedia device plays the predetermined content and/or content lists.
According to the present invention, remote devices such as kettle, coffee maker or treadmill are provided with a sensor node detecting operation of the remote device and remotely communicating this information to the multimedia device. The multimedia device then plays the associated content based on the operated remote device.
In a variation of the invention, the multimedia device further communicates with a heart rate monitor measuring the user's heart rate. This information is used to automatically specify one of the previously determined multimedia contents or content lists. A smartwatch also serves to the purpose of monitoring heart rate and communicating the retrieved information.
More particularly, according to this variation of the invention, the multimedia device of the invention automatically selects one of the predetermined multimedia contents or content lists based on the heart rate information. A certain multimedia content or content list among a number of multimedia contents or content lists is selected based on the heart rate information such that the selected multimedia content's tempo corresponds to the current activity of the user. More precisely, if the user reads a book before going to bed, the heart rate information may reveal that the user is in a very calm state of mind. Alternatively, if the user is running on a treadmill, then the tempo of the played multimedia content will have a corresponding tempo. The tempo of a played content or music is typically the speed or pace of a given piece of music and is indicated in beats per minute (bpm). Therefore, the multimedia device determines the multimedia content or content lists based on the activity of the user, which can also alternatively be revealed or advantageously more precisely verified by the heart rate information. According to this latter alternative embodiment, the heart rate information and the operated device information are used in combination to determine the content(s) to be played. For instance, if the multimedia device is communicated that a kettle is currently operated, this information is used together with heart rate information to verify whether the user is currently having breakfast. The multimedia device stores a look-up table containing a list of activities as associated with predefined heart rate ranges. A certain time interval is further optionally determined as the possible time interval for carrying out a specific activity such as having breakfast. Further alternatively, the multimedia device generates and stores a pattern of various multimedia contents and lists in association with each and every remote device on the basis of time of operation and optionally heart rate information so that multimedia contents and lists in association with a specified device are filtered out according to the pattern data and also based on the current data set provided to the multimedia device. More precisely, if the time of operation information of the kettle or optionally additionally heart rate information reveals that the current data set corresponds to stored pattern data, the multimedia device plays one of the predetermined multimedia contents and plays a selection of contents corresponding to the activity of the user. If the heart rate information is also used, the played contents have corresponding tempo. If the heart rate information is not used, the selection of content is made based on predetermined content associated with the operated device and time of use information, which together corresponds to a certain activity according to the previously generated activity pattern data. In a more precise manner, if the user runs on the treadmill every day at a certain time with similar heart rate values, this provides a large number of data sets forming a data pattern. Therefore, the multimedia device automatically effectuates selection of accurate multimedia content even if certain parameter values such as heart rate information are missing.
In one embodiment of the present invention, a multimedia device for playing multimedia contents or content lists is proposed, said multimedia device communicating with at least one remote sensor node coupled to or in signal communication with a remote device in the manner that operated state of said remote device is communicated to said multimedia device by said remote sensor node. In a further embodiment of the present invention, said multimedia device comprises an electronic control unit effecting selection of a multimedia content or content list based on the currently operated remote device among a plurality of predetermined multimedia contents or content lists in association with different remote devices in the manner that one of the predetermined multimedia contents or content lists is playable concurrently starting with the initiation of the operation of said remote device.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said multimedia device communicates with a heart rate monitor monitoring real-time heart rate of a user in the manner that said electronic control unit effects selection of a multimedia content or content list whose tempo in beats per minute corresponds to the current activity of the user based on the heart rate information. In a further embodiment of the present invention, said heart rate monitor is a smartwatch.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the information as to the operated device is used together with heart rate information to verify whether the user is currently engaged in a certain predetermined activity.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the multimedia device stores a look-up table containing a list of activities and remote devices as associated with predefined heart rate ranges.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the multimedia device stores a look-up table with specified activities associated with a certain time interval for carrying out said specific activity.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the multimedia device generates and stores a history pattern of different multimedia contents and lists in association with said remote devices on the basis of time of operation and heart rate information.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, multimedia contents and lists in association with a specified device are filtered out according to the pattern data and based on the current data set including time of operation and heart rate information provided to the multimedia device.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said multimedia device is an image display device or a music player system.
Therefore, the user does not need to manually change the content played by the multimedia device when changing to a different activity. It is advantageous and time-saving to be able to automatically access predetermined content during a certain activity in dependence therewith. The embodiments of the present invention are generally advantageous in that users are provided with multimedia content whose speed or pace corresponds to their current activities. This relationship between activities and pace of the played music can be established by monitoring heart rates of the users. Additionally, certain activities are associated with certain heart rates and therefore music tempo in the manner that use of different domestic devices indicates the current activity even in the absence of heart rate information thanks to generated and stored history pattern data.
