Description
Sub-frame for a superstructure of a vehicle
The invention relates to a sub-frame for a
superstructure of a vehicle, particularly for a
superstructure of a trailer.
Trucks, particularly tractors with a trailer, are usually provided with a superstructure which is
substantially beam-shaped. This has the advantage that an optimal space is obtained in the superstructure and that this space can be loaded with cargo, for instance pallets with boxes, in simple manner.
The drawback of this beam shape of the superstructure is however that a lot of turbulence, which increases the drag of the truck and has an adverse effect on fuel
consumption, is created behind the truck during travel.
It is known from the prior art to have the rear side of the superstructure taper to a wedge shape, whereby the drag is reduced. US 6286894 thus shows a trailer wherein the superstructure of the trailer can be converted from a block shape to a superstructure wherein the rear side is wedge- shaped. It is hereby possible to preserve the beam shape and the corresponding volume when the trailer is fully loaded, so that optimal use can be made of the superstructure. When part of the cargo has been unloaded and the rear part of the superstructure is empty, the form of the superstructure can be adjusted so that a wedge shape is created and whereby the drag can be reduced for the remaining journey.
From an economic viewpoint, such prior art
superstructures can only be applied in newly built trailers. Converting an existing trailer will entail a lot of time and costs, while the trailer cannot be used for transporting cargo during the conversion.
It is now an object of the invention to reduce or even
obviate the above stated drawbacks.
This object is achieved according to the invention with a sub-frame for a superstructure of a vehicle, particularly for a superstructure of a trailer, which sub-frame
comprises:
- a first U-shaped frame;
- a second U-shaped frame, arranged parallel to and at a distance from the first U-shaped frame;
- two uprights, each arranged between a free end of a leg of the first U-shaped frame and a free end of a leg of the second U-shaped frame; and
- two wall parts, each arranged pivotally on an upright and displaceable between a first position, wherein the wall part is parallel to the legs of the first and second U- shaped frame, and a second position, wherein the wall parts are each pivoted with a free edge parallel to the uprights toward each other, for instance lie against each other and form a V-shape as seen in longitudinal direction of the uprights .
Providing a sub-frame according to the invention makes it possible to construct the sub-frame irrespective of the presence of the superstructure. The placing of the sub-frame in the superstructure of a vehicle can then take place quickly. The trailer can be driven up, the two sides of the rear part of the superstructure can be sawn away, after which the sub-frame can be placed in the resulting opening and can be secured.
With the sub-frame according to the invention such a conversion of an existing superstructure can usually take place within half a day, whereby the period during which the trailer cannot be used will remain limited to a minimum.
With the sub-frame according to the invention, arranged in a superstructure of a trailer or other vehicle, it is now
possible to give the superstructure either a block shape for a maximum capacity for transporting cargo, or to make the rear side wedge-shaped, whereby the drag of the
superstructure is reduced. This is achieved by placing the wall parts in line with the other walls of the
superstructure in the first position, or by placing the wall parts in a wedge shape in the second position, which reduces the drag.
In a highly preferred embodiment of the sub-frame according to the invention the difference between the angle in the first position and the second position of each wall part lies between 5° and 10°, preferably 7°.
A preferred embodiment of the sub-frame according to the invention further comprises two doors, each arranged pivotally on the free edge of one of the wall parts.
With the two doors the superstructure can be closed in simple manner when the wall parts are in the first position and the superstructure has a block shape. It is of course also possible to close the superstructure by means of a tarpaulin. It is also possible to use one of the two doors to close the rear side when the wall parts are positioned in a partial V-shape.
In a further embodiment of the sub-frame according to the invention a door is arranged with at least one hinge on the free edge of the wall part, wherein the hinge comprises at least two parallel pivot shafts arranged at a mutual distance .
By providing the hinge with at least two parallel pivot shafts, the door can be moved both against the one side of the wall part and against the other side of the wall part.
It is thus possible to open the doors outward during loading and unloading, and the doors can be rotated inward when the wall parts are brought into the second position.
In a highly preferred embodiment of the sub-frame according to the invention the legs of the first and second U-shaped frame are girders with a C-shaped cross-section for gripping round frame beams of a trailer, and wherein the open side of the C-shaped cross-section of two girders of the first or the second frame are directed toward each other .
By providing the legs of U-shaped frames as girders with C-shaped cross-section, the sub-frame can be pushed around the beams of the frame of the superstructure after a part of the superstructure of a vehicle has been removed. There is thus immediately a strong connection between the sub-frame and the superstructure.
In yet another embodiment of the sub-frame according to the invention an espagnolette is arranged in the free edge of each of the wall parts, which espagnolette locks the wall part in both the first and the second position by engaging on both the base part of the first U-shaped frame and on the base part of the second U-shaped frame.
With the espagnolette the wall parts can be locked to both the first U-shaped frame and the second U-shaped frame in simple manner by pulling a lever.
Each espagnolette preferably comprises a bearing, such as a wheel, for mounting the wall part on the first U-shaped frame in unlocked position of the espagnolette.
A wheel or other bearing can be moved out of the wall part by pulling the lever of the espagnolette, whereby the wall part is supported by the wheel when shifting between the first position and the second position and whereby little force is required for the displacement of the wall parts .
The invention further relates to a combination of a sub-frame according to the invention and a superstructure of
a trailer, which superstructure comprises:
- a rectangular base frame;
- a rectangular upper frame arranged parallel to and at a distance from the base frame;
wherein the sub-frame is arranged between the base frame and the upper frame.
The girders of the first U-shaped frame preferably grip round the base frame and the girders of the second U-shaped frame grip round the upper frame.
These and other features of the invention are further elucidated with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows an embodiment of the sub-frame according to the invention.
Figures 2A and 2B show the sub-frame according to figure 1 in two positions.
Figures 3A-3C show the steps of arranging a sub-frame according to figure 1 in a superstructure of a vehicle.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a sub-frame 1 according to the invention. This sub-frame 1 has a first U- shaped frame with a base part 2 and two parallel legs 3, 4. Arranged parallel to the first U-shaped frame 2, 3, 4 is a second U-shaped frame with a base part 5 and two parallel legs 6, 7. Legs 3, 4, 6, 7 are girders with a C-shaped cross-section .
Uprights 8, 9 are provided between the free outer ends of legs 3, 4, 6, 7. A wall part 10, 11 is arranged pivotally on each of these uprights 8, 9. These wall parts 10, 11 can be placed in a wedge shape, as shown in figure 1, or can be placed in a position in which wall parts 10, 11 are parallel to each other, as shown in figure 2A. Wall parts 10, 11 can be locked in a desired position by integrated espagnolettes , which can be operated with levers 15, 16 and engage on holes 17 in base parts 2, 5.
Two doors 12, 13 are further arranged via hinges 14 on the free edges of wall parts 10, 11. Hinges 14 are provided with double pivot shafts, whereby doors 12, 13 can be folded against the inner side of wall parts 10, 11, as shown in figure 1, or can be folded outward, as shown in figure 2B.
Figure 3A shows a superstructure 20 of a vehicle. The form of superstructure 20 is here block-shaped.
In order to arrange sub-frame 1 a part is sawn out of superstructure 20, whereby only a base frame 21 and an upper frame 22 remain (see figure 3B) .
Because legs 3, 4, 6, 7 of the two U-shaped frames 3-7 are formed by C-shaped girders 3, 4, 6, 7, wherein the openings of the girders are directed toward each other, these girders 3, 4, 6, 7 can be pushed around the edges of base frame 21 and upper frame 22 in order to thus mount sub- frame 1 on superstructure 20 (see figure 3C) .
