Abstract
A differential (1) is disclosed, in which a casing (290, 390, 90) of the differential (1) is configured so that a crown wheel assembly (10, 40, 80) can be introduced into the casing (290, 390, 90) in a sideways motion to assemble moving parts of the differential (1) within the casing (290, 390, 90). The structural casing (90) is preferably a single body. The crown wheel assembly (10, 40, 80) is preferably supported in the casing (290, 390, 90) by a single crown wheel bearing (180). The crown wheel assembly (10, 40, 80) is configured so as to have a short axial length, to fit through a relatively small crown wheel assembly opening (910, 91) of the casing (290, 390, 90). A non-structural cover (1200, 1500) may be provided to cover (1200, 1500) the crown wheel assembly opening (910, 91).
