Abstract
The present invention relates to a polyphase electrical household appliance (1) for use in a three-phase electric power system. The household appliance (1) comprises load circuits (2), a power source unit (3) which has an input means that includes four or five terminals for respectively connecting the protective earth line (PE), the neutral line (N) and two phase lines (L1, L2) or three phase lines (L1, L2, L3) of the mains and an output means for outputting electric power via a plurality of output lines (L1', L2', L3', N') to the load circuits (3). The household appliance (1) of the present invention comprises: a protection unit (4) which detects the relative phases of the lines that are connected to the terminals of said input means assigned to the phase lines (L1, L2, L3) of the mains, and controls said output means in accordance with the detection result.
Description
The present invention relates to a polyphase electrical household appliance, in particular to a cooking appliance.
Electrical household appliances such as cooking appliances require more energy with increasing cooking capacities. Accordingly, the type of the electrical connection required for the cooking appliance may depend on its rate of energy consumption as well as on the electric power system in that region. Cooking appliances are commonly known. For instance a cooking appliance generally comprises a power source unit which has an input means that includes two terminals for respectively connecting the protective earth line PE and the neutral line N and an additional terminal for connecting a single phase line L1, or two additional terminals for respectively connecting two phase lines L1, L2 or three additional terminals for respectively connecting three phase lines L1, L2, L3 of the mains of the three-phase electric power system. In the first mentioned case, the cooking appliance allows only a mono phase electrical connection. In the second mentioned case the cooking appliance allows a two-phase electrical connection usually with the option of making a mono phase electrical connection by shunting the respective terminals. In the third mentioned case, the cooking appliance allows a three-phase electrical connection usually with the option of making a mono phase electrical connection or alternatively a two-phase electrical connection again by shunting the respective terminals.
The customers are generally advised to consult a professional electrician for the installation of their electrical household appliances. The professional electrician will correctly decide for the type of the electrical connection to be made by considering the capacity of the wiring in the customer’s house and the wattage of the electrical household appliance to be installed. However, some customers try to connect their electrical household appliances to the three-phase AC mains by themselves. In such instances, there is a risk that the appliance is not correctly connected to the mains and thus, the electric wiring in the house and/or the appliance may get damaged. Such damages may cause fire and/or an electric shock during the operation of the household appliance.
An objective of the present invention is to provide a polyphase electrical household appliance and a control method which overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks of the prior art in a cost effective way and which enables an improved safety.
This objective has been achieved by the household as defined in claim 1, and the method for controlling the household appliance as defined in claim 7. Further achievements have been attained by the subject-matters respectively defined in the dependent claims.
The household appliance of the present invention comprises a protection unit which detects the relative phases of the lines that are connected to the terminals of its input means assigned to the phase lines of the three-phase AC mains, and controls the output means of the power source unit in accordance with the detection result.
With the present invention, the household appliance can be prevented from being incorrectly connected to the three-phase mains in particular when a two-phase electrical connection or a three-phase electrical connection to the mains is mandatorily prescribed by the manufacturer. Thereby, the risk of damaging the electric wiring in the house and/or the appliance can be eliminated or reduced as much as possible. With the present invention, the safety of the polyphase electrical household appliance has been improved. Thereby, the consumer satisfaction can be increased.
In an embodiment, the relative phases of the lines are detected by way of monitoring the zero-crossings of the corresponding signals. Of course, the present invention is not limited to the zero-crossing method. Other phase-angle measurement methods known to those skilled in the art can be alternatively used.
In another embodiment, the output of electric power is inhibited to at least some of the load circuits of the appliance unless the detected relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees. Thereby, the user can be prevented from taking the household appliance into operation when the electrical connection is incorrect. The normal operation of the appliance is permitted when the detected relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees.
In another embodiment, the output of electric power is inhibited by interrupting the neutral output line. In a version of this embodiment, the interruption is implemented through an electrically operable switch, in particular a relay which inhibits operation when it is closed and permits operation when it is opened.
In other alternative embodiments, the user is visually and/or audibly warned through the display and/or the loudspeaker of the appliance when the electrical connection is detected as incorrect.
The present invention can be particularly applied to polyphase electrical household appliances which have comparatively high energy consumptions. The present invention can be more particularly applied to electrical cooking appliances which perform cooking by radiative heat transfer and/or convective heat transfer and/or electromagnetic induction.
In another embodiment, the present invention is applied to an induction cooking appliance. In this embodiment, some of the load circuits which are subjected to the inhibition have induction coils which are normally operable in accordance with user inputs through an interface only when the electrical connection is detected as correct.
Additional advantages of the household appliance of the present invention and the method for controlling the household appliance of the present invention will become more apparent with the detailed description of the embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 – is a schematic view of an induction cooking appliance which has five terminals for electrical connection to the three-phase AC mains according to an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 – is a schematic view of a protection unit of the induction cooking appliance according to an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 3 – is a flowchart showing the steps of a method for controlling a polyphase electrical household appliance according to an embodiment of the present invention.

The polyphase electrical household appliance (1) is suitable for use in a three-phase AC electric power system (Fig. 1 to 2).
The polyphase electrical household appliance (1) comprises a plurality of load circuits (2) and a power source unit (3) which comprises an input means that includes either four or five terminals for respectively connecting the protective earth line (PE), the neutral line (N) and either two phase lines (L1, L2) or three phase lines (L1, L2, L3) of the three-phase mains of the three-phase electric power system; and an output means for outputting electric power via a plurality of output lines (L1’, L2’, L3’, N’) to the plurality of load circuits (2) (Fig. 1 to 2).
The household appliance (1) of the present invention, comprises a protection unit (4) which detects the relative phases of the lines that are connected to the terminals of said input means assigned to the phase lines (L1, L2, L3) of the three-phase mains, and controls said output means in accordance with the detection result.
In an embodiment, the protection unit (4) detects the relative phases of said lines by monitoring the zero-crossings of the corresponding signals.
In another embodiment, the protection unit (4) inhibits the output means to output electric power to one or more than one of the load circuits (2) unless the relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees. In this embodiment, the protection unit (4) permits the output means to output electric power to the plurality of load circuits (2) if the relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees.
In another embodiment, the protection unit (4) comprises a switching unit (5) for interrupting the output line (N’) which is assigned to the neutral line (N) and which leads to said one or more than one of the load circuits (2). In this embodiment, the protection unit (4) inhibits or permits the output means to output electric power by way of turning the switching unit (5) off or on respectively.
In another embodiment, the household appliance (1) comprises a display unit (6) for visually outputting information to the user. In this embodiment, the protection unit (4) causes the display unit (6) to display a warning when the output means is inhibited by the protection unit (4).
In another embodiment, the household appliance (1) is provided as an induction cooking appliance (1). In this embodiment, one or more than one of the load circuits (2) each comprise an induction coil and a control circuit for operating the induction coil in accordance with user inputs. The control circuit comprises a rectifier and an inverter for operating the induction coil.
The present invention also provides a method for controlling the household appliance (1). The method of the present invention comprises a step (S1) of detecting the relative phases of the lines which are connected to the terminals of the appliance (1) that are assigned to the phase lines (L1, L2, L3) of the three-phase mains of the three-phase electric power system; and a step (S1-S4) of controlling the electric power which is to be output via a plurality of output lines (L1’, L2’, L3’, N’) to the plurality of load circuits (2) of the appliance (1) in accordance with the detection result obtained in the detection step (S1) (Fig. 3).
In another embodiment, in the detecting step (S1) the relative phases of said lines are detected by monitoring the zero-crossings of the corresponding signals.
In another embodiment, the control step (S1-S4) comprises: a step (S1 to S3) of inhibiting the electric power to be output to one or more than one of the load circuits (2) unless the relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees; and a step (S4) of permitting the electric power to be output to the load circuits (2) if the relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees.
In another embodiment, in the inhibiting step (S1 to S3) the output line (N’) which is assigned to the neutral line (N) and which leads to said one or more than one of the load circuits (2) is interrupted.
In another embodiment, the method comprises a step (S5) of visually and/or audibly warning the user when the electric power to be output to said one or more than one of the load circuits (2) is inhibited in the inhibiting step (S3).
Claims (11)
- A household appliance (1), in particular a cooking appliance for use in a three-phase electric power system, comprising- a plurality of load circuits (2),- a power source unit (3) comprising an input means that includes either four or five terminals for respectively connecting the protective earth line (PE), the neutral line (N) and two phase lines (L1, L2) or three phase lines (L1, L2, L3) of the three-phase mains of the three-phase electric power system and an output means for outputting electric power via a plurality of output lines (L1’, L2’, L3’, N’) to the plurality of load circuits (2),the household appliance (1) being characterized in that- a protection unit (4) which is adapted to detect the relative phases of the lines which are connected to the terminals of said input means that are assigned to the phase lines (L1, L2, L3) of the three-phase mains, and to control said output means in accordance with the detection result.
- The household appliance (1) according to claim 1, characterized in that in the protection unit (4) is adapted to detect the relative phases of said lines by monitoring the zero-crossings of the corresponding signals.
- The household appliance (1) according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the protection unit (4) is adapted to inhibit the output means to output electric power to one or more than one of the load circuits (2) unless the relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees, and to permit the output means to output electric power to the plurality of load circuits (2) if the relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees.
- The household appliance (1) according to claim 3, characterized in that the protection unit (4) comprising a switching unit (5) for interrupting the output line (N’) which is assigned to the neutral line (N) and which leads to said one or more than one of the load circuits (2), wherein the protection unit (4) is adapted to inhibit or permit the output means to output electric power by way of turning the switching unit (5) off or on respectively.
- The household appliance (1) according to claim 3 or 4, characterized in that a display unit (6) for visually outputting information to the user, wherein the protection unit (4) is adapted to cause the display unit (6) to display a warning when the output means is inhibited by the protection unit (4).
- The household appliance (1) according to any one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the household appliance (1) is provided as an induction cooking appliance (1), wherein one or more than one of the load circuits (2) each comprise an induction coil and a control circuit for operating the induction coil in accordance with user inputs.
- A method for controlling a household appliance (1), in particular a cooking appliance for use in a three-phase electric power system, characterized in that:- a step (S1) of detecting the relative phases of the lines which are connected to the terminals of the appliance (1) that are assigned to the phase lines (L1, L2, L3) of the three-phase mains of the three-phase electric power system and- steps (S1 to S4) of controlling the electric power which is to be output via a plurality of output lines (L1’, L2’, L3’, N’) to the plurality of load circuits (2) of the appliance (1) in accordance with the detection result obtained in the detection step (S1).
- The method according to claim 7, characterized in that in the detecting step (S1) the relative phases of said lines are detected by monitoring the zero-crossings of the corresponding signals.
- The method according to claim 7 or 8, characterized in that the control steps (S1 to S4) comprising the steps (S1 to S3) of inhibiting the electric power to be output to one or more than one of the load circuits (2) unless the relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees and the steps (S2, S4) of permitting the electric power to be output to the load circuits (2) if the relative phase differences are successively 120 degrees.
- The method according to claim 9, characterized in that in the inhibiting step (S1 to S3) the output line (N’) which is assigned to the neutral line (N) and which leads to said one or more than one of the load circuits (2) is interrupted.
- The method according to claim 9 or 10, characterized in that a step (S5) of visually and/or audibly warning the user when the electric power to be output to said one or more than one of the load circuits (2) is inhibited in the inhibiting steps (S1 to S3).
