Reduktionsverfahren und Elektrolysesystem zur elektrochemischen Kohlenstoffdioxid-Verwertung
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren und ein Elektrolysesystem zur elektrochemischen Kohlenstoffdioxid- Verwertung. Kohlenstoffdioxid wird in eine Elektrolysezelle eingeleitet und an einer Kathode reduziert.
Stand der Technik
Aktuell wird ca. 80 % des weltweiten Energiebedarfs durch die Verbrennung von fossilen Brennstoffen gedeckt, deren Verbren- nungsprozesse eine weltweite Emission von etwa 34000 Millio¬ nen Tonnen Kohlenstoffdioxid in die Atmosphäre pro Jahr ver¬ ursacht. Durch diese Freisetzung in die Atmosphäre wird der Großteil an Kohlenstoffdioxid entsorgt, was z.B. bei einem Braunkohlekraftwerk bis zu 50000 Tonnen pro Tag betragen kann. Kohlenstoffdioxid gehört zu den sogenannten Treibhaus¬ gasen, deren negative Auswirkungen auf die Atmosphäre und das Klima diskutiert werden. Da Kohlenstoffdioxid thermodynamisch sehr niedrig liegt, kann es nur schwierig zu wiederverwertbaren Produkten reduziert werden, was die tatsächliche Wieder- Verwertung von Kohlenstoffdioxid bisher in der Theorie bezie¬ hungsweise in der akademischen Welt belassen hat.
Ein natürlicher Kohlenstoffdioxid-Abbau erfolgt beispielswei¬ se durch Fotosynthese. Dabei werden in einem zeitlich und auf molekularer Ebene räumlich in viele Teilschritte aufgeglie¬ derten Prozess Kohlenstoffdioxid zu Kohlehydraten umgesetzt. Dieser Prozess ist so nicht einfach großtechnisch
adaptierbar. Eine Kopie des natürlichen Fotosyntheseprozesses mit großtechnischer Fotokatalyse ist bisher nicht ausreichend effizient.
Eine Alternative stellt die elektrochemische Reduktion des Kohlenstoffdioxids dar. Systematische Untersuchungen der
elektrochemischen Reduktion von Kohlenstoffdioxid sind noch ein relativ junges Entwicklungsfeld. Erst seit wenigen Jahren gibt es Bemühungen, ein elektrochemisches System zu entwickeln, das eine akzeptable Kohlenstoffdioxidmenge reduzieren kann. Forschungen im Labormaßstab haben gezeigt, dass zur

89-189, sind Faraday Effizienzen an unterschiedlichen Metallkathoden zu entnehmen, siehe Tabelle 1 . Wird Kohlenstoffdio¬ xid beispielsweise an Silber-, Gold-, Zink-, Palladium- und Galliumkathoden nahezu ausschließlich zu Kohlenstoffmonoxid reduziert, entstehen an einer Kupferkathode, eine Vielzahl an Kohlenwasserstoffen als Reaktionsprodukte.
So würden beispielsweise an einer Silberkathode überwiegend Kohlenmonoxid und wenig Wasserstoff entstehen. Die Reaktionen an Anode und Kathode können mit folgenden Reaktionsgleichungen dargestellt werden:

Von besonderem wirtschaftlichem Interesse ist beispielsweise die elektrochemische Erzeugung von Kohlenstoffmonoxid, Methan oder Ethen. Dabei handelt es sich um energetisch höherwertige Produkte als Kohlenstoffdioxid .

In der Tabelle sind Faraday Effizienzen [%] von Produkten angegeben, die bei der Kohlenstoffdioxid-Reduktion an verschiedenen Metallelektroden entstehen. Die angegebenen Werte gelten für eine 0,1 M Kaliumhydrogencarbonatlösung als Elektrolyten .
Zur Begünstigung oder Beschleunigung von Reduktionsreaktionen von Kohlenstoffdioxid sind aus dem Stand der Technik Kataly¬ satoren, wie beispielsweise Übergangsmetall-Komplexe sowie Übergangsmetall-Hydrido-Komplexe bekannt, wie sie etwa in der Veröffentlichung „Catalytic CO2 Activation Assisted by Rheni¬ um Hydride/B (C6F5) 3 Frustrated Lewis Pairs - Metal Hydrides Functioning as FLP Bases" von Y. Jiang, 0. Blacque, T. Fox und H. Berke beschrieben werden, erschienen in J. Am. Chem. Soc, 2013, 135 (20), Seiten 7751-7760.
Zu deren Funktionsweise ist in der Figur 5 ein beispielhafter Ablauf für einen Katalysekreislauf gezeigt. Ein Komplex, all¬ gemein aufgebaut aus einem Zentralatom und einem oder mehreren Liganden kann verschiedene Oxidationsstufen durchlaufen, dabei Kationen, Elektronen, OH- oder CO-Gruppen in Lösung geben oder daraus wieder aufnehmen. Ein Beispiel für eine kata- lytische Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktion zu Kohlenstoffmonoxid mittels einem Rhenium-Komplex ist auch aus der Veröffentli¬ chung „Elucidation of the Selectivity of Proton-Dependent Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction by fac-Re (bpy) (CO) 3CI" von J.
A. Keith, K. A. Grice, C. P. Kubiak und E. A. Carter bekannt, erschienen in J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2013, 135, Seiten
15823-15829. Hierbei sei anzumerken, dass nicht anhand der Reaktionsbedingungen vorhersagbar ist, ob dabei am Ende ein inaktiver Rhenium-Komplex entsteht und somit der katalyti- schen Wirkung ein Ende gesetzt ist oder ein Reaktionskreis¬ lauf gebildet wird. Jegliche Aussagen dazu aus dem Stand der Technik sind spekulativ. Gerade in der Veröffentlichung von J.A. Keith et al . wird ein theoretischer Mechanismus be- schrieben, bei dem die Hydrido-Spezies sogar den Katalysator inaktiviert .
Anders als bei der weiter erforschten und bereits industriell einsetzbaren Wasserelektrolyse sind für die Kohlenstoff- dioxidreduktion bisher stets kostspielige Elektrodenlösungen ausgewählt worden, welche zum Teil gleichermaßen als Elektro¬ de sowie auch als Katalysator wirken. Darüber hinaus muss bei der Elektrodenwahl für ein industriell nutzbares Vorgehen zur Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktion auch an deren Stabilität in der Elektrolytumgebung gedacht werden.
Zum einen ist nicht jede Kombination von Elektrodenoberflä- chenmaterial , Elektrolyt und Katalysator geeignet, Kohlen¬ stoffdioxid effizient zu reduzieren, denn der Ladungsübertrag von der Elektrode auf den Katalysator ist ein zu berücksichtigender limitierender Faktor.
Außerdem unterliegen die bisher im Stand der Technik für die elektrochemische Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktion eingesetzten überwiegend reinen Metallelektroden einer zeitlichen Veränderung, z.B. ihrer Morphologie, etwa durch Korrosion. Solche Veränderungen werden überwiegend in wässrigen Elektrolyten hervorgerufen. Jedoch ist eine Abkehr von wässrigen Elektrolyten aus ökonomischer Sicht von Nachteil für die Katalyse.
Folglich stellt es sich als technisch erforderlich dar, eine verbesserte Lösung für die elektrochemische Kohlenstoffdio- xid-Verwertung vorzuschlagen, welche die aus dem Stand der Technik bekannten Nachteile vermeidet. Insbesondere soll die vorzuschlagende Lösung nicht nur einen effektiven Kohlenstoffdioxidabbau ermöglichen sondern auch eine ökonomische, langzeitstabile Verwertung angeben. Es ist Aufgabe der Erfin¬ dung, ein verbessertes Reduktionsverfahren und Elektrolyse¬ system zur Kohlenstoffdioxid-Verwertung anzugeben.
Diese der vorliegenden Erfindung zugrundeliegenden Aufgaben werden durch ein Verfahren gemäß dem Patentanspruch 1 sowie durch ein Elektrolysesystem gemäß dem Patentanspruch 10 gelöst. Vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen der Erfindung sind Gegenstand der Unteransprüche. Beschreibung der Erfindung
Bei dem erfindungsgemäßen Reduktionsverfahren zur Kohlenstoffdioxid-Verwertung mittels eines Elektrolysesystems wird Kohlenstoffdioxid durch einen Kathodenraum geführt und in Kontakt mit einer Kathode gebracht, zumindest ein erstes Ma¬ terial im Kathodenraum bereitgestellt oder in diesen einge¬ führt, mittels welchem eine Reduktionsreaktion von Kohlenstoffdioxid zu wenigstens einer Kohlenstoffwasserverbindung oder zu Kohlenstoffmonoxid katalysierbar ist und zumindest ein vom ersten Material verschiedenes zweites Material in den Kathodenraum eingeführt, mittels welchem die Reduktionsreaktion co-katalysierbar ist, in dem dieses einen Ladungstransfer von der Kathode auf das erste Material begünstigt. Typi-
scherweise fungiert der Kathodenraum einer Elektrolysezelle dabei als Reaktionsraum für die Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktion, die Kathode fungiert als Elektronenquelle. Neben dem Kohlen¬ stoffdioxid als Reduktionsedukt kann im System des Weiteren eine Elektrolytlösung vorliegen. Als Elektrolyt wird bei¬ spielsweise eingesetzt: ein salzhaltiger wässriger Elektro¬ lyt, ein salzhaltiges organisches Lösungsmittel, eine ioni¬ sche Flüssigkeit und es ist auch superkritisches Kohlenstoff¬ dioxid als Elektrolyt einsetzbar. Für Elektrolyte auf Wasser- basis werden bevorzugt Kalium-Hydrogen-Karbonat KHC O 3 oder Kalium-Bromid KBr, Kalium-Sulfat K2 SO4 oder Kalium-Phosphat K3 P O 4 als Salze eingesetzt. Ebenso sind gut lösliche Salze anderer Kationen einsetzbar. Das erste Material wird entweder im Elektrolyten gelöst und dementsprechend im Elektrolytkreislauf geführt oder separat vom Elektrolyten zur Reaktion in den Kathodenraum eingeführt, oder bevorzugt direkt im Kathodenraum bereitgestellt, bei¬ spielsweise immobilisiert auf einer Innenfläche des Kathoden- raums oder insbesondere auf der Elektroden-, d.h. der Katho¬ denoberfläche .
Das zweite Material kann zusammen mit dem Elektrolyten oder einem Edukt-Elektrolyt-Gemisch in den Kathodenraum eingeführt werden, oder separat von diesem in den Kathodenraum
eindosiert werden. Das beschriebene Verfahren hat den Vor¬ teil, eine hohe Stromdichte und entsprechend hohe Ausbeute bei der Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktion zu gewährleisten, als auch energetisch günstig und somit konkurrenzfähig zu anderen Energiespeichern für volatile Energiequellen zu sein.
Das erste Material ist beispielsweise ein Komplex, typischer¬ weise ein Metall-Komplex in einer niedrigen Oxidationsstufe, an den ein Wasserstoffatom als Ligand koordiniert werden kann. Bevorzugt werden Komplexe eingesetzt, die den Wasser¬ stoff durch Protonierung koordinieren. Dieser koordinierte Wasserstoff hat dann oft hydridischen Charakter und kann da-
her Reduktionsreaktionen eingehen. Die Protonenquelle stellt dabei das zweite Material des Reduktionssystems dar:
Typischerweise wird in dem Reduktionsverfahren als zweites Material ein protisches Lösungsmittel eingesetzt. Von einem protischen Lösungsmittel spricht man, wenn aus Molekülen leicht Protonen abgespalten werden können, diese als
Protonendonatoren fungieren. Beispiele protischer Lösungsmittel sind Wasser, Alkohole, insbesondere Methanol und Ethanol, Mineralsäuren oder Carbonsäuren sowie primäre und sekundäre Amine. Bevorzugt werden in dem beschriebenen Reduktionsverfahren als zweites Material Wasser, Methanol, Ethanol oder ein anderer Alkohol eingesetzt. Die so entstehenden Hydride des ersten Materials sind Co-Katalysatoren im Sinne der Er- findung. Alternativ wird als zweites Material z.B. ein
Hydrido-Komplex eingesetzt.
Das in dem Reduktionsverfahren eingesetzte erste Material ist insbesondere ein Metall-Komplex. Unter einem Komplex ist da- bei eine chemische Verbindung zu verstehen, die aus einem oder mehreren Zentralteilchen sowie einem oder mehreren Liganden aufgebaut ist. Bevorzugt wird für das beschriebene Re¬ duktionsverfahren als erstes Material ein Metall-Komplex mit niederer Oxidationsstufe verwendet, was heißt, dass dieser ein elektronenreiches Zentrum aufweist, wie etwa bei ver¬ schiedenen Übergangsmetall-Komplexen, beispielsweise mit Eisen oder Cobalt als Zentralatom. Besonders bevorzugt sind Übergangsmetall-Komplexe mit einem schweren Übergangsmetall als Zentralatom, wie beispielsweise Molybdän oder Rhenium. Von einem schweren Übergangsmetall spricht man zwischen einer Ordnungszahl von zwischen 42 und 104.
Alternativ kann als erstes Material zur Reduktionskatalyse auch ein Metallcarbonyl oder Metallcarbonylat eingesetzt wer- den. Metallcarbonyle sind Komplexverbindungen von Übergangs¬ metallen mit mindestens einem Kohlenstoffmonoxidliganden .
Bei dem beschriebenen Reduktionsverfahren werden typischerweise zweites und erstes Material so gewählt, dass diese als Precursor in-situ miteinander reagieren und innerhalb des Elektrolysesystems, respektive dem Kathodenraum, Hydrido- Metallkomplexe oder Metall-Carbonylhydride bilden. Mittels der so entstandenen Hydrido-Metallkomplexe oder Metall- Carbonylhydride wird der katalytische Zyklus der Reduktion von Kohlenstoffdioxid zu wenigstens einer Kohlenstoffwasser- verbindung oder zu Kohlenstoffmonoxid sehr effizient getrie- ben. Wie bereits beschrieben, ist für die Katalyse der Koh¬ lenstoffdioxidreduktion der Hydrido-Anteil des Katalysators von besonderer Bedeutung, da hierüber besonders effektiver Ladungsaustausch mit der Kathode stattfinden kann. Bevorzugt werden bei dem Verfahren erste und zweite Materialien einge- setzt, die auch in wässriger Umgebung stabil sind. Das sind zum Beispiel viele Rhenium-Verbindungen, wie ReH3 (OH) 3 (H20) ~, ReHg2-, bzw. diejenigen, die sich in-situ bilden. Unter stabil ist zu verstehen, dass erste und zweite Materialien sich nicht in unerwünschte Nebenprodukte aufspalten, die der elektrochemischen Umsetzung von Kohlenstoffdioxid oder beispielsweise der Stabilität des Elektrodensystems entgegenwir¬ ken oder schaden.
Auch kann bei der Materialienwahl darauf geachtet werden, dass die Kathode nicht angegriffen wird: Z.B. können aus der Oberfläche der Elektrode Ionen ausgelöst werden oder diese wird sogar großflächig durch einen Korrosionsangriff in ihrer Morphologie zerstört. Unerwünschte Nebenprodukte können sich z.B. auf der Kathode ablagern und diese dadurch so zusetzen, dass der Ladungsaustausch behindert würde.
Das erfindungsgemäße Elektrolysesystem zur Kohlenstoffdioxid- Verwertung umfasst eine Elektrolysezelle mit einer Anode in einem Anodenraum und mit einer Kathode in einem Kathodenraum. Der Kathodenraum ist dabei so ausgestaltet, dass Kohlenstoff¬ dioxid aufgenommen und in Kontakt mit der Kathode gebracht werden kann. Der Kathodenraum weist dabei ein erstes Material auf, durch welches eine Reduktionsreaktion von Kohlenstoffdi-
oxid zu wenigstens einer Kohlenwasserstoff erbindung oder zu Kohlenstoffmonoxid katalysierbar ist. Des Weiteren weist der Kathodenraum einen Materialzugang mit einer Dosierungseinheit auf, über welchen zumindest ein vom ersten Material verschie- denes zweites Material in den Kathodenraum einführbar ist. Mittels diesem zweitem Material ist die Reduktionsreaktion co-katalysierbar, in dem dieses einen Ladungstransfer von der Kathode auf das erste Material begünstigt. Alternativ weist der Kathodenraum einen zweiten Materialzugang mit einer Do- sierungseinheit für das erste Material auf, oder dieses wird zusammen mit dem Elektrolyten beziehungsweise einem Edukt- Elektrolyt-Gemisch in den Kathodenraum geströmt.
Dieses Elektrolysesystem hat den Vorteil, dass darin mit ei- nem Katalysator und einem präzise zudosierbaren Co-
Katalysator gearbeitet werden kann, wodurch eine hohe Stromdichte und dementsprechend hohe Ausbeute aus dem Kohlenstoff- dioxidreduktionsvorgang zu erzielen ist. Beispielsweise zeichnet sich das beschriebene Elektrolysesys¬ tem zur Kohlenstoffdioxid-Verwertung dadurch aus, dass die Kathodenoberfläche eine Austrittsarbeit aufweist, deren Ener¬ gieniveau einen Ladungsübertrag auf das erste Material zu- lässt bzw. für diesen Ladungsübertrag besonders günstig liegt. Beziehungsweise weist die Kathodenoberfläche chemische Eigenschaften auf, die einen Ladungsübertrag entsprechend be¬ günstigen. Das erste Material liegt dabei beispielsweise im Kathodenraum in gelöster Form z.B. im Elektrolyten vor oder es ist auf der Kathodenoberfläche oder einer anderen Innen- fläche des Kathodenraums immobilisiert. Besonders bevorzugt werden Elektroden eingesetzt, die Platin, Kupfer, Zink, Nickel, Eisen, Titan, Zirkonium, Molybdän, Wolfram oder deren Legierungen enthalten. Dabei kann der Ladungsübertrag auch halbleitertechnisch oder chemisch interpretiert werden.
Vorzugsweise umfasst die Kathode des Elektrolysesystems Kup¬ fer, Kupferoxid, Titandioxid oder ein anderes Metalloxid- Halbleitermaterial auf.
Die Kathode kann beispielsweise auch als Fotokathode ausge¬ staltet sein, womit ein fotoelektrochemischer Reduktionspro- zess für die Verwertung von Kohlenstoffdioxid betrieben wer- den könnte, eine sogenannte Photoassisted C02-Electrolysis . In einer speziellen Ausführungsform kann dieses System auch rein fotokatalytisch arbeiten.
In einer weiteren vorteilhaften Ausführungsform der Erfindung weist die Kathode (K) beispielsweise eine Oberflächenschutz¬ schicht auf. Besonders bevorzugt Halbleiter-Fotokathoden, insbesondere aber auch metallische Kathoden, weisen eine Oberflächenschutzschicht auf. Mit einer Oberflächenschutz¬ schicht ist gemeint, dass eine im Vergleich zur Elektrodenge- samtdicke relativ dünne Schicht die Kathode vom Kathodenraum trennt. Die Oberflächenschutzschicht kann dazu ein Metall, einen Halbleiter oder ein organisches Material umfassen. Besonders bevorzugt im Sinne der Erfindung ist eine Titandio¬ xid-Schutzschicht. Der Schutzeffekt zielt überwiegend dahin, dass die Elektrode nicht vom Elektrolyten oder von im Elekt¬ rolyten gelösten Edukten, Produkten oder Katalysatoren und deren dissoziierten Ionen angegriffen wird und es z.B. zu einer Auslösung von Ionen aus der Elektrode kommt. Gerade hinsichtlich der elektrochemischen Reduktionsverfahren in wäss- rigen Medien oder zumindest in einem Medium, das geringe Wasser- oder Wasserstoffmengen aufweist, ist eine geeignete Oberflächenschutzschicht von großer Bedeutung für die Langle¬ bigkeit und Funktionsstabilität der Elektrode im Prozess. Be¬ reits durch kleine Morphologieänderungen, z.B. durch Korrosi- onsangriffe, können in wässrigen Elektrolyten oder wasseraufweisenden Elektrolytsystemen die Überspannungen von Wasserstoffgas H2 oder Kohlenstoffmonoxidgas CO beeinflusst werden. Die Folge wäre zum einen ein Abfall der Stromdichte und ent¬ sprechend eine sehr geringe Systemeffizienz für die Kohlen- Stoffdioxidumsetzung und zum anderen die mechanische Zerstö¬ rung der Elektrode.
In einer weiteren vorteilhaften Ausgestaltung des Elektrolysesystems weist die Kathode eine Ladungsübertragungsschicht auf, deren Oberfläche eine Austrittsarbeit aufweist, deren Energieniveau einen Ladungsübertrag auf das erste Material zulässt. D.h., dass die Kathode in ihrer überwiegenden Zusammensetzung auf ein beliebiges anderes geeignetes Material zu¬ rückgreifen kann und eine mit ihrer Austrittsarbeit an das erste Material angepasste Ladungsübertragungsschicht ein ge¬ eignetes Interface zwischen Kathode und Elektrolytsystem mit Katalysatormaterial bildet. Dabei liegt der Fokus insbesonde¬ re auf der Ladungsübertragung auf Hydrido-Komplexe . Als La¬ dungsübertragungsschicht von der Kathode in den Elektrolyten bzw. auf die Komplexsysteme sind beispielsweise dünne Edelme- tallbeschichtungen, Halbleiter-Injektionsschichten oder auch organische Injektionsschichten geeignet. Vorzugsweise sind die Funktionen der Ladungsübertragungsschicht und der Ober¬ flächenschutzschicht in einer einzelnen Schicht integriert. D.h. die Ladungsübertragungsschicht ist gleichermaßen für den Oberflächenschutz der Kathode zuständig bzw. ist die Oberflä- chenschutzschicht so gewählt, dass auch der Ladungsübertrag durch diese nicht behindert bzw. sogar begünstigt wird.
Beispiele und Ausführungsformen der vorliegenden Erfindung werden noch in exemplarischer Weise mit Bezug auf die Figuren 1 bis 13 der angehängten Zeichnung beschrieben:

Das in Figur 1 schematisch gezeigte Elektrolysesystem 10 weist zunächst als zentrales Element eine Elektrolysezelle 1 auf, welche hier in einem Zwei-Kammer-Aufbau dargestellt ist. Eine Anode A ist in einem Anodenraum AR, eine Kathode K in einem Kathodenraum KR angeordnet. Anodenraum AR und Kathodenraum KR sind durch eine Membran M voneinander getrennt. Der Anodenraum AR ist mit seinem Elektrolyteinlass und -auslass
an einen Anolytkreislauf AK angebunden. Analog ist der Katho¬ denraum KR mit seinem Elektrolyt- und Elektrolyseedukteinlass und seinem Elektrolyt- und Elektrolyseproduktauslass an einen Katholytkreislauf KK angebunden. Beide Kreisläufe AK, KK wei- sen jeweils zumindest eine Pumpe 11 auf, welche den Elektro¬ lyten und gegebenenfalls darin gelöste oder damit vermischte Edukte und Produkte durch die Elektrolysezelle 1 fördern. Zur Einbringung des Kohlenstoffdioxids CO2 in den Katholytkreis¬ lauf KK umfasst dieser z.B. einen Elektrolytbehälter 130 mit einem Kohlenstoffdioxideinlass 131 sowie einem Kohlenstoffdi- oxidreservoir 132. Mittels diesem Aufbau wird eine Kohlenstoffdioxidsättigung des Elektrolyten gewährleistet. Alterna¬ tiv wird das Kohlenstoffdioxid über eine Gasdiffusionselekt¬ rode GDE in den Elektrolytkreislauf eingebracht. Die Elektro- lytflussrichtungen sind in beiden Kreisläufen AK, KK mittels Pfeilen dargestellt. In Kreislaufrichtung nach dem Kathodenraum KR ist im Katholytkreislauf KK bevorzugt eine weitere Pumpe 11 umfasst, die den mit Elektrolyseprodukten gesättig¬ ten Elektrolyten in einen Behälter zur Gastrennung 140 beför- dert. An diesem ist ein Produktgasbehälter 141 und entsprechend ein Produktgasauslass 142 angeschlossen. Analog ist in den Anolytkreislauf AK ein Behälter zur Gastrennung 160 integriert, über welchen z.B. Sauerstoffgas O2 oder bei chlorid- haltigen Elektrolyten Chlorgas aus dem Elektrolyten separiert wird und über einen Produktgasbehälter 161 und den daran angeschlossenen Produktgasauslass 162 aus dem System entnommen werden kann.
Das Elektrolysesystem 10 kann alternativ zur gezeigten Zwei- Kammer-Elektrolysezelle 1 einen Elektrolysezellenaufbau, wie in einer der folgend beschriebenen Figuren 2 bis 4 aufweisen. Bevorzugt ist der Aufbau des Elektrolysesystems 10 mit einer Gasdiffusionselektrode GDE, wie in Figur 3 gezeigt. Zur Ein¬ bringung des Kohlenstoffdioxids CO2 in den Katholytkreislauf KK umfasst die Gasdiffusionselektrode GDE dann einen Kohlen¬ stoffdioxideinlass 320 und die Kathode K ist für das Kohle¬ stoffdioxid CO2 gasdurchlässig, was den Kohlenstoffdioxidein-
lass 131 mit dem Kohlenstoffdioxidreservoir 132 überflüssig machen würde .
Die in den Figuren 2 bis 4 schematisch dargestellten Aufbauten von Elektrolysezellen 2, 3, 4 werden bevorzugt in einem erfindungsgemäßen Elektrolysesystem 10 eingesetzt: Dabei umfasst jede Ausführungsform der gezeigten Elektrolysezellen 2, 3, 4 wenigstens eine Anode A in einem Anodenraum AR sowie ei¬ ne Kathode K in einem Kathodenraum KR. In jedem der Fälle sind Anodenraum AR und Kathodenraum KR wenigstens durch eine Membran M voneinander getrennt. Dabei kann die Membran eine ionenleitende Membran, zum Beispiel eine Anionen leitende Membran oder eine Kationen leitende Membran sein. Es kann sich bei der Membran um eine poröse Schicht oder ein Dia¬ phragma handeln. Letztlich kann man unter der Membran auch einen räumlichen ionenleitenden Separator verstehen, der Elektrolyte in Anoden- und Kathodenraum AR, KR trennt. Je nach verwendeter Elektrolytlösung wäre auch ein Aufbau ohne Membran M denkbar. Anode A und Kathode K sind jeweils elekt¬ risch mit einer Spannungsversorgung E verbunden. Der Anodenraum AR einer jeden der gezeigten Elektrolysezellen 2, 3, 4 ist jeweils mit einem Elektrolyteinlass 21, 31, 41 ausgestat¬ tet. Ebenso umfasst jeder abgebildete Anodenraum AR einen Elektrolytauslass 23, 33, 43 über den der Elektrolyt sowie an der Anode gebildete Elektrolysenebenprodukte, z.B. Sauer¬ stoffgas O2 aus dem Anodenraum AR ausströmen können. Die jeweiligen Kathodenräume KR weisen jeweils wenigstens einen Elektrolyt- und Produktauslass 24, 34, 44 auf. Dabei kann das Gesamtelektrolyseprodukt aus einer Vielzahl von Elektrolyse¬ produkten zusammengesetzt sein.
Während im Zweikammer-Aufbau 2 Anode A und Kathode K durch Anodenraum AR und Kathodenraum KR von der Membran M getrennt angeordnet sind, liegen die Elektroden in einem sogenannten Polymerelektrolyt-Aufbau ( PEM) 4 mit porösen Elektroden direkt an der Membran M an. Wie in Figur 4 gezeigt, handelt es sich dann um eine poröse Anode A und um eine poröse Kathode K. Im Zweikammer-Aufbau 2 sowie im PEM-Aufbau 4 werden der Elektro-
lyt und das Kohlenstoffdioxid CO2 bevorzugt über einen ge¬ meinsamen Edukteinlass 22, 42 in den Kathodenraum KR eingebracht . Unterschiedlich dazu, wie in Figur 3 gezeigt, wird bei einem sogenannten Drei-Kammer-Aufbau 3, bei dem der Kathodenraum KR einen Elektrolyteinlass 32 aufweist, separat davon das Koh¬ lenstoffdioxid CO2 über die in diesem Fall zwingend porös ausgeführte Kathode K in den Kathodenraum KR eingeströmt. Be- vorzugt ist die poröse Kathode K als Gasdiffusionselektrode GDE, ausgestaltet. Eine Gasdiffusionselektrode GDE ist da¬ durch charakterisiert, dass eine flüssige Komponente, z.B. ein Elektrolyt, sowie eine gasförmige Komponente, z.B. ein Elektrolyseedukt , in einem Porensystem der Elektrode, z.B. der Kathode K, in Kontakt miteinander gebracht werden können. Das Porensystem der Elektrode ist dabei so ausgeführt, dass die flüssige sowie die gasförmige Phase gleichermaßen in das Porensystem eindringen können und darin gleichzeitig vorliegen können. Typischerweise ist dazu ein Reaktionskatalysator porös ausgeführt und übernimmt die Elektrodenfunktion, oder eine poröse Elektrode weist katalytisch wirkende Komponenten auf. Zur Einbringung des Kohlenstoffdioxids CO2 in den
Katholytkreislauf KK umfasst die Gasdiffusionselektrode GDE einen Kohlenstoffdioxideinlass 320.
In der Figur 5 ist ein Reaktionskreislauf gezeigt, wie er aus dem Stand der Technik bekannt ist: Ein Komplex 51, allgemein aufgebaut aus Zentralatom M und einem oder mehreren Liganden L kann verschiedene Oxidationsstufen 52 durchlaufen, dabei ein Kation K+ oder Anion in Lösung geben oder daraus wieder aufnehmen oder an einer anderen Stelle des Komplexes 53 anordnen. Bei Hinzufügen von Kohlenstoffdioxid CO2, in der Fi¬ gur 5 durch einen injizierenden Pfeil angezeigt, kann von diesem ein Sauerstoffmolekül auf den Katalysator-Komplex 56 übergehen. Im Folgenden wird bei der Reaktion des Komplexes 57 zu 58 oder auch bei einem anderen möglichen Zwischenschritt über den Komplex 59 wird dann Wasser H2O frei, bevor der Komplex 510 noch durch Abgabe seiner CO-Gruppe als Koh-
lenstoffmonoxid CO in den ursprünglichen Zustand 53 zurück¬ findet, mittels dem dann erneut Kohlenstoffdioxid CO2 umge¬ setzt werden kann. Die Protonenaufnahme H+ an der einen oder anderen Stelle im Kreislauf sowie die Freisetzung von Wasser H2O kann gemäß dem beschriebenen Reduktionsverfahren vorteilhaft für die Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktion zu Nutze gemacht wer¬ den. In der Figur 5 steht K+ für ein beliebiges Kation, M für das Zentralatom des Komplexes, welches insbesondere ein Me¬ tall bzw. Übergangsmetallatom ist und L für einen Liganden, welcher z.B. ein Bipyridin-Ligand wie in den Figuren 6 bis 9 sein kann. Ob der Komplex im Zustand 53 zum Komplex 56 oder 54 weiter reagiert, ist beispielsweise abhängig von äußeren Bedingungen, wie beispielsweise dem Milieu, in dem sich der Komplex befindet: Der pH-Wert der Umgebung entscheidet, ob der Wasserstoff an den Komplex gebunden oder dissoziiert vor¬ liegt. Ein Komplex 55 liegt tendenziell eher in einer Umge¬ bung mit einer Säurekonstante pKs um 43 vor, ein Komplex 59 eher in einem Milieu einer Säurekonstante pKs um die 28, d.h. in Wasser praktisch nie.
In den Figuren 6 bis 9 sind verschiedene chemische Reaktio¬ nen, die in dem beschriebenen Verwertungsverfahren eine Rolle spielen, dargestellt. In der Figur 6 ist als Beispiel für ein erstes Katalysatormaterial ein Rhenium-Bipyridin-Komplex ge- zeigt Re (tBu-bipy) (CO) 3CL , welches dementsprechend zu Beginn des Verwertungsverfahrens in der Elektrolysezelle 1 als Aus¬ gangsmaterial vorliegen muss oder in diese eingeführt werden muss. Der erste Reaktionsschritt 60 ist die Hydrierung dieses Komplexes, d.h. die Addition von Wasserstoff: Es wird in die- sem Beispiel als protische Spezies Methanol CH3OH zugegeben.
Unter Aufnahme einer negativen elektrischen Ladung e- entstehen die rechts in der Figur 6 gezeigten Hydrido-Komplexe, die über eine Gleichgewichtsreaktion jeweils ineinander übergehen können und somit beide im Elektrolysesystem 10 vorliegen kön- nen.
Alternativ zum gezeigten Rhenium-Komplex könnte das Kürzel Re durch ein beliebiges Metall, bevorzugt als Alternative zum
gezeigten Bipyridin-Liganden könnten auch alternative Liganden eingesetzt werden.
In der Figur 7 ist dann links im Bild die katalysierte Reduk¬ tionsreaktion 7 von Kohlenstoffdioxid CO2 zu Kohlenstoffmono- xid CO gezeigt, bei der es zur Aufnahme eines Sauerstoffs durch den Komplex kommt. Rechts in der Figur 7 gezeigt ist eine weitere Gleichgewichtsreaktion, die einen Kationentrans- fer 70 zeigt. Die für die Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktion notwendige Ladungsübertragung läuft durch die hydridischen Katalysatorkomplexe leichter ab.
Zur einfacheren Darstellung sind in den Figuren 8 und 9 die Komplexe zum Teil ohne die anhängigen Liganden gezeigt. Das
Rhenium-Zentralatom ist wieder ein geeignetes Beispiel, könnte jedoch wieder durch ein beliebiges Metallatom M, vorzugsweise ein anderes Übergangsmetallatom, ersetzt sein. Das Katalysatormaterial ist an dieser Stelle nicht verbraucht, son- dern wird in einem Reaktionskreislauf geführt, d.h. es kehrt wieder zur ursprünglichen Form des Hydrido-Komplexes 6 zurück. Links in der Figur 8 gezeigt ist eine Gleichgewichtsre¬ aktion zwischen zwei Oxidationszuständen des Komplexes 80. In einer Reduktionsreaktion 80 wird eine Wassergruppe gebildet, die in einem weiteren Schritt 81, rechts in der Figur 8 ge¬ zeigt, als Wasser H2O abgespalten werden kann. Wie in Figur 9 gezeigt, gelangt man so bereits zum Ausgangshydridokomplex 6 zurück. Der Schritt der Wasserabspaltung 81 stellt somit eine erneuerbare Wasserstoffquelle im System dar. Durch diese zu- sätzliche Protonenquelle kann die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit der Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktion noch erhöht werden, denn das Wasser H2O kann an der Kathode K zu Wasserstoff H+,H2 umge¬ setzt werden. Der Wasserstoff H+,H2 muss dabei nicht zwangs¬ läufig als Wasserstoffgas H2 im System vorliegen, sondern kann auch physisorbiert sein oder auf einer Oberfläche in der Elektrolysezelle 1 chemisorbiert vorliegen. Dies ermöglicht beispielsweise einen Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktionsvorgang in nicht wässrigen Elektrolyten, denen lediglich ein so geringer
Wasser- bzw. Wasserstoffanteil zugesetzt wird, dass Hydrido- Komplexe entstehen, die die Kohlenstoffdioxidkatalyse trei¬ ben . Die Figur 10 zeigt beispielhaft und schematisch einen Aus¬ schnitt einer Elektrolysezelle 1, nämlich den Kathodenraum KR mit Kathode K und angeschlossener Spannungsversorgung E. Des Weiteren sind stark vereinfacht durch in den Kathodenraum KR hinein weisende und hinausweisende Pfeile der Kohlenstoffdio- xideinlass und Kohlenstoffmonoxidauslass angezeigt, wobei diese in der Regel mit dem Elektrolytein- und -ausgang zusammenliegen. Alternativ zum Kohlenstoffdioxideinlass über den Elektrolyteinlass in die Elektrolysezelle 1 könnte auch hier das Kohlenstoffdioxid CO2 wieder entsprechend einer Aus- führungsform, wie in Figur 3 gezeigt, durch eine Gasdiffusi¬ onselektrode GDE in den Kathodenraum KR eingeführt werden. Bei Anliegen einer Betriebsspannung E an den Elektroden K, A der Elektrolysezelle 1, stellt die Kathodenoberfläche dem Reaktionsraum Elektronen e~ zur Verfügung. Der Ladungsüber- trag von der Kathode K auf den Katalysatorkomplex 110 ist durch einen Pfeil 60 angezeigt, der gleichermaßen für die Hydrierungsreaktion 60 steht, wie sie in Figur 6 ausgeführt ist. Dies soll verdeutlichen, dass der Ladungsübertrag von der Kathode K auf den Katalysatorkomplex 110 nur mit Hilfe der Zugabe einer protischen Spezies 60 effektiv gelingt. Die protische Spezies 60 kann dabei zusammen mit dem Katalysatorkomplex 110 in der Elektrolysezelle 1 vorliegen, über den Elektrolytkreislauf durch diese hindurch befördert werden oder speziell, z.B. über eine gesonderte Dosierungseinheit, in den Kathodenraum zudosiert werden. Der Katalysatorkomplex 110 kann gelöst im Elektrolyten im Kathodenraum KR vorliegen oder insbesondere auf der Kathodenoberfläche immobilisiert sein . In den Figuren 11 bis 13 sind noch Diagramme mit Messergeb¬ nissen gezeigt, die beispielhaft den Effekt des beschriebenen Verfahrens verdeutlichen sollen. In den Figuren 11 und 12 sind jeweils Strom-Spannungs-Diagramme einer Linear Sweep
Voltammetriemessung gezeigt, in denen eine Stromdichte i
[mA/cm2] gegenüber einer Zellspannung E [V] aufgetragen ist. Die an die Elektroden angelegte Spannung E ist in den Diagrammen 11 und 12 jeweils gegen das Ferrocen- Referenzpotential Fc+/Fc aufgetragen, da die für dieses Bei¬ spiel verwendete Elektrolytlösung auf Acetonitril als Lösungsmittel beruht. Bei jeweils einem linearen Durchlauf des angelegten Potentials E sind unterschiedliche Stromverläufe i zu verzeichnen: Bei der ersten Messung, in Figur 11 darge- stellt, liegen jeweils gleiche Bedingungen bezüglich des
Elektrolyten vor, sowie bezüglich des Katalysatorkomplexes 110 und der Anwesenheit einer protischen Spezies 60. In die¬ sem Fall wurde als erstes Material der in den Figuren 6 bis 9 gezeigte Rhenium-Bipyridin-Komplex und als zweites Material Methanol verwendet. Die mit a gekennzeichnete gestrichelte
Kurve der geringeren Stromdichte i wurde ohne Kohlenstoffdio- xid CO2 im System aufgenommen. An dessen Stelle wurde ver¬ suchsweise das Inertgas Argon Ar in die Elektrolysezelle 1 eingeleitet. Die Abwesenheit der Kohlenstoffdioxidreduktions- reaktion vermindert dementsprechend den Stromfluss i über die Kathode K. Die mit b gekennzeichnete gepunktete Kurve, deren Stromdichtewert i auf mehr als das Doppelte der ersten Mes¬ sung a ansteigt, wurde unter Anwesenheit von Kohlenstoffdio- xid CO2 im Kathodenraum KR gemessen.
Für das ansonsten gleiche System wurde in einer äquivalenten Messung der Beitrag des Co-Katalysators Methanol CH40 nachge¬ wiesen, in dem ein linearer Spannungsdurchlauf an der Kathode ohne und mit Methanolzugabe untersucht wurde: Die gestrichel- te Kurve c wurde unter Abwesenheit des Co-Katalysators Metha¬ nol aufgenommen, die gepunktete Kurve d, deren Stromdichte i auf knapp das Vierfache der ersten Messung c ohne
Methanolzugabe ansteigt, wurde bei einer einmolaren Methanol- Konzentration in der Elektrolytlösung registriert, was ein klarer Nachweis für dessen co-katalytische Wirkung ist.
In der Figur 13 ist schließlich noch ein weiteres Beispiel gezeigt, bei dem eine Fotoelektrode zur Kohlenstoffdioxidre-
duktion eingesetzt wird. In Figur 13 ist dementsprechend die gemessene Stromdichte i in Abhängigkeit von der eingestrahl¬ ten Lichtintensität I hv aufgezeigt. Die gestrichelte Kurve e mit der sehr geringen Stromdichte i, die auch schnell in eine Sättigung geht, wurde bei einem Elektrolytsystem ohne Zugabe einer protischen Spezies 60 gemessen, der lineare Anstieg der zweiten gepunkteten Messkurve f wurde bei Zugabe von Methanol CH3OH in einmolarer Konzentration gemessen.
