Description
본 발명은 광 신호의 굴절 및 반사에 의한 경로 변경을 이용하는 양방향 광 전송(bidirectional optical transmission)에 관한 것으로, 보다 구체적으로, 양방향으로 광 신호가 전송되는 주 도파로(main waveguide)와 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로(branch waveguide)의 교차점에 배치되는 반사기(reflector)를 이용함으로써, 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 주 도파로로 진행시키고, 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 가지 도파로로 분리시키는 도파로의 구조에 관한 것이다.
광 신호의 양방향 전송을 위한 기존의 방식으로는 두 개의 광 도파로를 이용함으로써, 양방향 광 신호를 송신 광 도파로 및 수신 광 도파로로 각각 구분하여 전송하는 방식이 있다. 그러나, 이와 같은 기존의 방식은 광 신호 전송 경로 전체에 있어서, 두 개의 광 도파로를 사용해야 하기 때문에, 구조적으로 방대해지는 단점이 있다.
또한, 광 신호의 양방향 전송을 위한 기존의 다른 방식으로는 단일 광 도파로를 사용하되, 송신 광 신호 및 수신 광 신호의 파장 또는 편광을 달리하여 전송하는 방식이 있다. 그러나, 이와 같은 기존의 다른 방식은 광 도파로 상에 광 신호의 파장 또는 편광을 분리하는 기능을 갖는 별도의 광 소자를 구비해야 하기 때문에, 구조적으로 복잡해지는 문제점이 있다.
이에, 본 명세서에서는 별도의 광 소자를 구비하는 대신에, 주 도파로와 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로의 교차점에 배치되는 반사기를 이용함으로써, 유입되는 송신 광 신호 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 각각 다른 형태로 굴절 또는 반사시키는 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 제안한다.
본 발명의 실시예들은 주 도파로와 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로의 교차점에 배치되는 반사기를 이용함으로써, 유입되는 송신 광 신호 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 각각 다른 형태로 굴절 또는 반사시키는 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 제공한다.
구체적으로, 본 발명의 실시예들은 유입되는 송신 광 신호 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 각각 다른 형태로 굴절 또는 반사시킴으로써, 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 주 도파로로 진행시키고, 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 가지 도파로로 분리시키는 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 제공한다.
이 때, 본 발명의 실시예들은 추가적인 에너지 소비 없이, 반사기의 수동적인(passive) 반사 또는 투과 특성을 이용함으로써, 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 주 도파로로 진행시키고, 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 가지 도파로로 분리시키는 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 제공한다.
또한, 본 발명의 실시예들은 유입되는 송신 광 신호 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호가 동일한 파장 및 편광을 갖는 경우에도, 파장 또는 편광을 분리시키는 기능을 갖는 별도의 광 소자를 이용하지 않고, 반사기만을 이용함으로써, 유입되는 송신 광 신호 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 구분하여 처리하는 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 제공한다.
본 발명의 일실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로(main waveguide); 상기 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로(branch waveguide); 및 상기 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나와 상기 가지 도파로가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되고, 상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률과 다른 굴절률을 갖는 반사기(reflector)를 포함하고, 상기 반사기는 유입되는 송신 광 신호 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 각각 다른 형태로 굴절 또는 반사시킴으로써, 상기 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 상기 주 도파로로 진행시키고, 상기 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 상기 가지 도파로로 분리시킨다.
상기 반사기에 포함되는 경계면들(boundaries) 중 적어도 어느 하나의 경계면은 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호 또는 상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(incident angle)이 내부 전반사(total internal reflection)가 발생되는 임계각(critical angle)보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 상기 내부 전반사를 이용하여 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 반사시켜 상기 가지 도파로로 분리시킬 수 있다.
상기 반사기의 굴절률이 상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 작은 경우, 상기 반사기에 포함되는 수신 경계면은 상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호 또는 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각이 상기 임계각보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 내부 전반사시켜 상기 가지 도파로로 분리시키고, 상기 반사기에 포함되고, 상기 수신 경계면과 구별되는 송신 경계면에 의해 내부 굴절(internal refraction)되어 상기 반사기 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호를 외부 굴절(external refraction)시켜 상기 주 도파로로 진행시킬 수 있다.

도 1은 본 발명의 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 1을 참조하면, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로(110), 주 도파로(110)의 양끝단 각각에 연결되는 가지 도파로(120), 주 도파로(110)의 양끝단 각각과 가지 도파로(120)가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되는 상부 반사기(130) 및 하부 반사기(160)를 포함할 수 있다. 이러한 경우, 상부 반사기(130) 측에서 유입되는 송신 광 신호(140)는 하부 반사기(160) 측에 유입되는 수신 광 신호(140)일 수 있고, 상부 반사기(130) 측에 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150)는 하부 반사기(160) 측에 유입되는 송신 광 신호(150)일 수 있다. 그러나, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 이에 제한되거나 한정되지 않고, 하나의 반사기만을 포함하는 구조를 가질 수도 있다.
따라서, 이하, 적어도 하나의 반사기를 참조 부호 130으로 기재하여, 적어도 하나의 반사기(130)를 갖는 경우의 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 설명한다.
본 발명의 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로(110), 주 도파로(110)의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로(120) 및 반사기(130)를 포함한다. 여기서, 주 도파로(110)와 가지 도파로(120)는 Y자 형태를 가질 수 있다.
주 도파로(110)의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나와 가지 도파로(120)가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되는 반사기(130)는 주 도파로(110) 및 가지 도파로(120)와 구별되는 다른 매질로 형성되어, 주 도파로(110)의 굴절률(refractive index) 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률(120)과 다른 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 유입되는 송신 광 신호(140) 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150)를 각각 다른 형태로 굴절 또는 반사시킬 수 있다.
예를 들어, 주 도파로(110) 및 가지 도파로(120)는 반도체 소자로 형성되고, 반사기(130)는 주 도파로(110)의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로(120)의 굴절률과 다른 굴절률을 갖는 불순물이 도핑되어 형성될 수 있다. 다른 예를 들면, 주 도파로(110) 및 가지 도파로(120)는 반도체 소자로 형성되고, 반사기(130)는 주 도파로(110)의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로(120)의 굴절률과 다른 굴절률을 갖도록 결정 결함이 생성된 반도체로 형성될 수 있다.
따라서, 반사기(130)는 유입되는 송신 광 신호(140) 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150)를 각각 다른 형태로 굴절 또는 반사시킴으로써, 유입되는 송신 광 신호(140)를 주 도파로(110)로 진행시키고, 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150)를 가지 도파로(120)로 분리시킨다.
특히, 반사기(130)에 포함되는 경계면들(boundaries) 중 적어도 어느 하나의 경계면(boundary)(131)은 반사기(130)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150) 또는 반사기(130)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(140) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(incident angle)이 내부 전반사(total internal reflection)가 발생되는 임계각(critical angle)보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 내부 전반사를 이용하여 반사기(130)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150)를 반사시켜 가지 도파로(120)로 분리시킬 수 있다.
여기서, 반사기(130)가 이용하는 광학 원리는 다음과 같다. 굴절률이 큰 매질(nh)에서 굴절률이 작은 매질(nl)로 광 신호가 지나갈 때, 경계면에서 광 신호의 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 작을 경우(θi<θc)에는 광 신호는 경계면에서 내부 전반사가 일어나며, 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 클 경우(θi>θc)에는 광 신호의 일부는 내부 굴절(internal refraction)되어 경계면을 통과한다. 이 때, 입사각(θi)은 경계면과 입사 방향 사이의 각도로 정의되고, 임계각(θc)은 내부 전반사가 발생되는 특정 각도로서, 수학식 1과 같이 정의된다.

반면, 광 신호가 굴절률이 작은 매질(nl)에서 굴절률이 큰 매질(nh)로 지나갈 때는 경계면에서 광 신호의 일부가 외부 굴절(external refraction)로 투과되며, 광 신호의 일부는 외부 반사(external reflection)된다. 이러한 경우, 입사각이 90도에 근접하면, 일반적으로 대부분의 광 신호가 경계면에서 내부 굴절 또는 외부 굴절되어 경계면을 투과한다.
이와 같이, 본 발명의 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 반사기(130)의 굴절률을 주 도파로(110)의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로(120)의 굴절률과 다르게 설정하고, 반사기(130)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(140) 또는 반사기(130)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각이 조절되도록 반사기(130)에 포함되는 경계면들 중 적어도 어느 하나의 경계면(131)을 임의의 각도로 형성하여, 반사기(130)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(140) 또는 반사기(130)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150)를 각각 다른 형태로 굴절 또는 반사시킴으로써, 반사기(130)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(140)를 주 도파로(110)로 진행시키고, 반사기(130)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(150)를 가지 도파로(120)로 분리시킨다. 이에 대한 상세한 설명은 아래에서 기재하기로 한다.
도 2는 제1 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 2를 참조하면, 제1 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로, 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로 및 반사기(210)를 포함한다.
주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나와 가지 도파로가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되는 반사기(210)는 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 작은 굴절률을 갖는 매질로 형성될 수 있다.
이러한 경우, 반사기(210)에 포함되는 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(210)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220) 또는 반사기(210)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(240) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(210)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(240)를 내부 전반사시켜 가지 도파로로 분리시킬 수 있다.
또한, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 송신 경계면(a'-b')에 의해 내부 굴절되어 반사기(210) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(230)를 외부 굴절시켜 주 도파로로 진행시킬 수 있다.
여기서, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 반사기(210)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220) 또는 반사기(210)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(240) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(θ'i)이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 반사기(210)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220)를 내부 굴절시켜 반사기(210) 내부로 진행시킬 수 있다.
또한, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 수신 경계면(a-b)보다 큰 굴절률을 갖고, 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 반사기(210)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220)를 내부 굴절시켜 반사기(210) 내부로 진행시킬 수도 있다. 이에 대한 상세한 설명은 도 4를 참조하여 기재하기로 한다.
또한, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 톱니 구조로 형성되어 반사기(210)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220)를 내부 굴절시켜 반사기(210) 내부로 진행시킬 수도 있다. 이에 대한 상세한 설명은 도 6을 참조하여 기재하기로 한다.
이 때, 주 도파로의 굴절률, 가지 도파로의 굴절률, 반사기(210)의 굴절률, 송신 경계면(a'-b')이 형성되는 임의의 각도 또는 수신 경계면(a-b)이 형성되는 임의의 각도 중 적어도 어느 하나는 반사기(210)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220)가 송신 경계면(a'-b') 및 수신 경계면(a-b)를 통과하는 과정에서 내부 전반사되거나, 외부 반사되지 않도록 적응적으로 조절될 수 있다. 따라서, 반사기(210)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220)의 대부분이 반사없이 반사기(210) 내부로 진행되고, 주 도파로로 진행될 수 있다.
여기서, 반사기(210)는 도면에 도시된 바와 같이, 송신 경계면(a'-b')이 수직에 가까운 입사각(θ'i)을 갖도록 형성되고 수신 경계면(a-b)의 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 형성됨으로써, a'-b'-b-a의 사다리 형태로 형성될 수 있지만, 이에 제한되거나 한정되지 않고, 송신 경계면(a'-b')이 수직에 가까운 입사각(θ'i)을 갖도록 형성되고 수신 경계면(a-b)의 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 형성되는 조건 아래, b'이 b에 근접된 직각 삼각형 형태로 형성될 수도 있다.
이와 같은 구조를 갖는 반사기(210)에 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220) 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호(240)는 송신 경계면(a'-b') 및 수신 경계면(a-b)의 다음과 같은 동작에 따라 진행 또는 분리된다.
반사기(210)에 유입되는 송신 광 신호(220)는 송신 경계면(a'-b')에 의해 내부 굴절되어 반사기(210) 내부로 진행되고, 반사기(210) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(230)는 수신 경계면(a-b)에 의해 외부 굴절되어 주 도파로로 진행될 수 있다.
반사기(210)에 유입되는 수신 광 신호(240)는 수신 경계면(a-b)에 의해 내부 전반사되어 가지 도파로로 분리될 수 있다.
도 3은 제2 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 3을 참조하면, 제2 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로, 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로 및 반사기(310)를 포함한다.
주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나와 가지 도파로가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되는 반사기(310)는 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 큰 굴절률을 갖는 매질로 형성될 수 있다.
이러한 경우, 반사기(310)에 포함되는 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 반사기(310)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(320) 또는 반사기(310)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(θ'i)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 수신 경계면(a-b)에 의해 외부 굴절되어 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되는 수신 광 신호(350)를 내부 전반사시켜 사이드 경계면(b'-c)으로 전달할 수 있다.
또한, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 반사기(310)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(320)를 외부 굴절 시켜 반사기(310) 내부로 진행시킬 수 있다.
여기서, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(310)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(320) 또는 상기 반사기(310)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340)에 대한 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(310)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340)를 외부 굴절시켜 반사기(310) 내부로 진행시킬 수 있다.
또한, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(330)를 내부 굴절시켜 주 도파로로 진행시킬 수 있다.
또한, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 송신 경계면(a'-b')보다 작은 굴절률을 갖고, 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 반사기(310)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340)를 외부 굴절 시켜 반사기(310) 내부로 진행시키고, 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(330)를 내부 굴절시켜 주 도파로로 진행시킬 수 있다. 이에 대한 상세한 설명은 도 5를 참조하여 기재하기로 한다.
또한, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 톱니 구조로 형성되어 반사기(310)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340)를 외부 굴절시켜 반사기(310) 내부로 진행시키고, 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(330)를 내부 굴절시켜 주 도파로로 진행시킬 수도 있다. 이에 대한 상세한 설명은 도 6을 참조하여 기재하기로 한다.
사이드 경계면(b'-c)은 전달되는 수신 광 신호(360)에 대한 입사각(θ"i)이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 사이드 경계면(b'-c)은 전달되는 수신 광 신호(360)를 내부 굴절시켜 가지 도파로로 분리시킬 수 있다.
또한, 사이드 경계면(b'-c)은 송신 경계면(a'-b')보다 작은 굴절률을 갖고, 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 전달되는 수신 광 신호(360)를 내부 굴절시켜 가지 도파로로 분리시킬 수도 있다.
이 때, 주 도파로의 굴절률, 가지 도파로의 굴절률, 반사기(310)의 굴절률, 송신 경계면(a'-b')이 형성되는 임의의 각도, 수신 경계면(a-b)이 형성되는 임의의 각도 또는 사이드 경계면(b'-c)이 형성되는 임의의 각도 중 적어도 어느 하나는 반사기(310)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(320)가 송신 경계면(a'-b') 및 수신 경계면(a-b)를 통과하는 과정에서 내부 전반사되거나, 외부 반사되지 않도록 적응적으로 조절되고, 반사기(310)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340)가 수신 경계면(a-b) 및 사이드 경계면(b'-c)를 통과하는 과정에서 내부 전반사되거나, 외부 반사되지 않도록 적응적으로 조절될 수 있다. 따라서, 반사기(310)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(320)의 대부분이 반사없이 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되고, 주 도파로로 진행될 수 있으며, 반사기(310)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340)의 대부분이 수신 경계면(a-b) 및 사이드 경계면(b'-c)에서 반사없이 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되고, 가지 도파로로 분리될 수 있다.
여기서, 반사기(310)는 도면에 도시된 바와 같이, 수신 경계면(a-b)이 수직에 가까운 입사각(θi)을 갖도록 형성되고 송신 경계면(a'-b')의 입사각(θ'i)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 형성되며, 사이드 경계면(b'-c)가 주 도파로 및 가지 도파로 사이의 경계와 평행한 각도로 형성됨으로써, a'-b'-b-a의 사다리 형태로 형성될 수 있지만, 이에 제한되거나 한정되지 않고, 수신 경계면(a-b)이 수직에 가까운 입사각 (θ'i)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 형성되며, 사이드 경계면(b'-c)가 주 도파로 및 가지 도파로 사이의 경계와 평행한 각도로 형성되는 조건 아래, a'이 a에 근접된 직각 삼각형 형태로 형성될 수도 있다.
이와 같은 구조를 갖는 반사기(310)에 유입되는 송신 광 신호(320) 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340)는 송신 경계면(a'-b') 및 수신 경계면(a-b)의 다음과 같은 동작에 따라 진행 또는 분리된다.
반사기(310)에 유입되는 송신 광 신호(320)는 송신 경계면(a'-b')에 의해 외부 굴절되어 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되고, 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(330)는 수신 경계면(a-b)에 의해 내부 굴절되어 주 도파로로 진행될 수 있다.
반사기(310)에 유입되는 수신 광 신호(340)는 수신 경계면(a-b)에 의해 외부 굴절되어 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되고, 반사기(310) 내부로 진행되는 수신 광 신호(350)는 송신 경계면(a'-b')에 의해 내부 전반사되어 사이드 경계면(b'-c)으로 전달된 후, 전달되는 수신 광 신호(360)는 사이드 경계면(b'-c)에 의해 내부 굴절되어 가지 도파로로 분리될 수 있다.
도 4는 제3 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 4를 참조하면, 제3 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로, 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로 및 반사기(410)를 포함한다.
주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나와 가지 도파로가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되는 반사기(410)는 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 작은 굴절률을 갖는 매질로 형성될 수 있다. 다만, 반사기(410)가 도 2에 도시된 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로에 포함되는 반사기와 다른 점은, 반사기(410)의 굴절률이 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 작되, 송신 경계면(a'-b')이 수신 경계면(a-b)보다 큰 굴절률을 갖고, 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 반사기(410)의 굴절률이 송신 경계면(a'-b')으로부터 수신 경계면(a-b)까지 점진적으로 작아진다(411)는 점이다. 이 때, 반사기(410)의 굴절률은 송신 경계면(a'-b')으로부터 수신 경계면(a-b)까지 연속적으로 작아지거나, 복수의 층들에 따라 단계적으로 작아질 수도 있다.
이에, 선명한 계면(abrupt boundary)인 수신 경계면(a-b)의 굴절률 na-b, 흐려진 계면(smeared boundary)인 송신 경계면(a'-b')의 굴절률 na'-
b'및 주 도파로와 가지 도파로의 굴절률 n은 수학식 2와 같은 부등식으로 표현된다.

따라서, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 반사기(410)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(420) 또는 반사기(410)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(440) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(θ'i)이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 필요없이, 굴절률의 변화만으로, 반사기(410)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(420)를 내부 굴절시켜 반사기(410) 내부로 진행시킬 수 있다.
반사기(410)에 포함되는 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(410)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(420) 또는 반사기(410)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(440) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(410)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(440)를 내부 전반사시켜 가지 도파로로 분리시킬 수 있다.
또한, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 송신 경계면(a'-b')에 의해 내부 굴절되어 반사기(410) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(430)를 외부 굴절시켜 주 도파로로 진행시킬 수 있다.
도 5는 제4 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 5를 참조하면, 제4 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로, 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로 및 반사기(510)를 포함한다.
주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나와 가지 도파로가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되는 반사기(510)는 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 큰 굴절률을 갖는 매질로 형성될 수 있다. 다만, 반사기(510)가 도 3에 도시된 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로에 포함되는 반사기와 다른 점은, 반사기(510)의 굴절률이 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 크되, 수신 경계면(a-b)이 송신 경계면(a'-b')보다 작은 굴절률을 갖고, 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 반사기(510)의 굴절률이 수신 경계면(a-b)로부터 송신 경계면(a'-b')까지 점진적으로 커진다(511)는 점이다. 이 때, 반사기(510)의 굴절률은 수신 경계면(a-b)로부터 송신 경계면(a'-b')까지 연속적으로 작아지거나, 복수의 층들에 따라 단계적으로 작아질 수도 있다.

따라서, 수신 경계면(a-b)는 반사기(510)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(520) 또는 반사기(510)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(540)에 대한 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 필요없이, 굴절률의 변화만으로, 반사기(510)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(540)를 외부 굴절시켜 반사기(510) 내부로 진행시킬 수 있고, 반사기(510) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(530)를 내부 굴절시켜 주 도파로로 진행시킬 수 있다.
반사기(510)에 포함되는 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 반사기(510)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(520) 또는 반사기(510)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(540) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 수신 경계면(a-b)에 의해 외부 굴절되어 반사기(510) 내부로 진행되는 수신 광 신호(550)를 내부 전반사시켜 사이드 경계면(b'-c)으로 전달할 수 있다.
또한, 송신 경계면(a'-b')은 반사기(510)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(520)를 외부 굴절 시켜 반사기(510) 내부로 진행시킬 수 있다.
사이드 경계면(b'-c)은 전달되는 수신 광 신호(560)에 대한 입사각(θ'i)이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 사이드 경계면(b'-c)은 전달되는 수신 광 신호(560)를 내부 굴절시켜 가지 도파로로 분리시킬 수 있다.
마찬가지로, 사이드 경계면(b'-c)은 송신 경계면(a'-b')보다 작은 굴절률을 갖고, 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 전달되는 수신 광 신호(560)에 대한 입사각(θ"i)이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 필요없이, 굴절률의 변화만으로, 전달되는 수신 광 신호(360)를 내부 굴절시켜 가지 도파로로 분리시킬 수도 있다.
도 6은 제5 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 6을 참조하면, 제5 실시예에 따른 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로는 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로, 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로 및 반사기(610)를 포함한다.
주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나와 가지 도파로가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되는 반사기(610)는 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 작은 굴절률을 갖는 매질로 형성될 수 있다.
송신 경계면(a'-b')은 반사기(610)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(620) 또는 반사기(610)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(640) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 필요없이, 톱니 구조(611)로 형성됨으로써, 반사기(610)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(620)를 내부 굴절시켜 반사기(610) 내부로 진행시킬 수 있다. 여기서 톱니 구조(611)는 광 신호의 파장 보다 작은 크기의 침상(needle) 또는 삼각뿔이 반복적으로 나열되는 구조로서, 나방 눈(moth eye) 구조를 의미한다. 이와 같은 톱니 구조(611)는 광 신호의 평균 굴절률이 연속적으로 변화하는 효과를 가져오기 때문에, 송신 경계면(a'-b')에 적용되어, 반사기(610)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(620)를 반사없이 반사기(610) 내부로 진행시킬 수 있다.
반사기(610)에 포함되는 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(610)로 유입되는 송신 광 신호(620) 또는 반사기(610)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(640) 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(θi)이 임계각(θc)보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 수 있다. 따라서, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 반사기(610)로 유입되는 수신 광 신호(640)를 내부 전반사시켜 가지 도파로로 분리시킬 수 있다.
또한, 수신 경계면(a-b)은 송신 경계면(a'-b')에 의해 내부 굴절되어 반사기(610) 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호(630)를 외부 굴절시켜 주 도파로로 진행시킬 수 있다.
마찬가지로, 이러한 톱니 구조(611)는 도 5에 도시된 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로에 포함되는 반사기의 수신 경계면(a-b)에 적용되어, 수신 경계면(a-b)이 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호 또는 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각이 임계각(θc)보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성될 필요없이, 톱니 구조(611)로 형성됨으로써, 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 외부 굴절시켜 반사기 내부로 진행시킬 수도 있다.
이상과 같이 실시예들이 비록 한정된 실시예와 도면에 의해 설명되었으나, 해당 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자라면 상기의 기재로부터 다양한 수정 및 변형이 가능하다. 예를 들어, 설명된 기술들이 설명된 방법과 다른 순서로 수행되거나, 및/또는 설명된 시스템, 구조, 장치, 회로 등의 구성요소들이 설명된 방법과 다른 형태로 결합 또는 조합되거나, 다른 구성요소 또는 균등물에 의하여 대치되거나 치환되더라도 적절한 결과가 달성될 수 있다.
그러므로, 다른 구현들, 다른 실시예들 및 특허청구범위와 균등한 것들도 후술하는 특허청구범위의 범위에 속한다.
Claims (16)
- 미리 설정된 방향으로 형성되는 주 도파로(main waveguide);상기 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나에 연결되는 가지 도파로(branch waveguide); 및상기 주 도파로의 양끝단 중 적어도 어느 하나와 상기 가지 도파로가 연결되는 교차점에 배치되고, 상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률과 다른 굴절률을 갖는 반사기(reflector)를 포함하고,상기 반사기는유입되는 송신 광 신호 및 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 각각 다른 형태로 굴절 또는 반사시킴으로써, 상기 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 상기 주 도파로로 진행시키고, 상기 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 상기 가지 도파로로 분리시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 반사기에 포함되는 경계면들(boundaries) 중 적어도 어느 하나의 경계면은상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호 또는 상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각(incident angle)이 내부 전반사(total internal reflection)가 발생되는 임계각(critical angle)보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 상기 내부 전반사를 이용하여 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 반사시켜 상기 가지 도파로로 분리시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제2항에 있어서,상기 반사기의 굴절률이 상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 작은 경우, 상기 반사기에 포함되는 수신 경계면은상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호 또는 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각이 상기 임계각보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 내부 전반사시켜 상기 가지 도파로로 분리시키고,상기 반사기에 포함되고, 상기 수신 경계면과 구별되는 송신 경계면에 의해 내부 굴절(internal refraction)되어 상기 반사기 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호를 외부 굴절(external refraction)시켜 상기 주 도파로로 진행시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제3항에 있어서,상기 송신 경계면은상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호 또는 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각이 상기 임계각보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 내부 굴절시켜 상기 반사기 내부로 진행시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제4항에 있어서,상기 주 도파로의 굴절률, 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률, 상기 반사기의 굴절률, 상기 송신 경계면이 형성되는 임의의 각도 또는 상기 수신 경계면이 형성되는 임의의 각도 중 적어도 어느 하나는상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호가 상기 송신 경계면 및 상기 수신 경계면을 통과하는 과정에서 내부 전반사되거나, 외부 반사(external reflection)되지 않도록 적응적으로 조절되는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제3항에 있어서,상기 송신 경계면은상기 수신 경계면보다 큰 굴절률을 갖고, 상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 내부 굴절시켜 상기 반사기 내부로 진행시키고,상기 반사기는상기 송신 경계면으로부터 상기 수신 경계면까지 점진적으로 작아지는 굴절률을 갖는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제3항에 있어서,상기 송신 경계면은톱니 구조로 형성되어, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 내부 굴절시켜 상기 반사기 내부로 진행시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제2항에 있어서,상기 반사기의 굴절률이 상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률보다 큰 경우, 상기 반사기에 포함되는 송신 경계면은상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호 또는 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각이 상기 임계각보다 작도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호를 외부 굴절시켜 상기 반사기 내부로 진행시키고,상기 반사기에 포함되고, 상기 송신 경계면과 구별되는 수신 경계면에 의해 외부 굴절되어 상기 반사기 내부로 진행되는 수신 광 신호를 내부 전반사시켜 상기 반사기에 포함되고, 상기 송신 경계면 및 상기 수신 경계면과 구별되어 상기 가지 도파로가 배치되는 방향에 위치하는 사이드 경계면으로 전달하는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제8항에 있어서,상기 수신 경계면은상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호 또는 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호 중 적어도 어느 하나에 대한 입사각이 상기 임계각보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 외부 굴절시켜 상기 반사기 내부로 진행시키고,상기 반사기 내부로 진행되는 송신 광 신호를 내부 굴절시켜 상기 주 도파로로 진행시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제8항에 있어서,상기 사이드 경계면은상기 전달되는 수신 광 신호에 대한 입사각이 상기 임계각보다 크도록 임의의 각도로 형성되어, 상기 전달되는 수신 광 신호를 내부 굴절시켜 상기 가지 도파로로 분리시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제10항에 있어서,상기 주 도파로의 굴절률, 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률, 상기 반사기의 굴절률, 상기 송신 경계면이 형성되는 임의의 각도, 상기 수신 경계면이 형성되는 임의의 각도 또는 상기 사이드 경계면이 형성되는 임의의 각도 중 적어도 어느 하나는상기 반사기로 유입되는 송신 광 신호가 상기 송신 경계면 및 상기 수신 경계면을 통과하는 과정에서 내부 전반사되거나, 외부 반사되지 않도록 적응적으로 조절되고,상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호가 상기 수신 경계면 및 상기 사이드 경계면을 통과하는 과정에서 내부 전반사 되거나, 외부 반사되지 않도록 적응적으로 조절되는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제8항에 있어서,상기 수신 경계면은상기 송신 경계면보다 작은 굴절률을 갖고, 상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 외부 굴절시켜 상기 반사기 내부로 진행시키고,상기 반사기는상기 수신 경계면으로부터 상기 송신 경계면까지 점진적으로 커지는 굴절률을 갖는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제8항에 있어서,상기 수신 경계면은톱니 구조로 형성되어, 상기 반사기로 유입되는 수신 광 신호를 외부 굴절시켜 상기 반사기 내부로 진행시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제8항에 있어서,상기 사이드 경계면은상기 송신 경계면보다 작은 굴절률을 갖고, 상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률에 미리 설정된 범위 내로 근접한 굴절률을 가짐으로써, 상기 전달되는 수신 광 신호를 내부 굴절시켜 상기 가지 도파로로 분리시키는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제1항에 있어서,상기 주 도파로 및 상기 가지 도파로는반도체 소자로 형성되고,상기 반사기는상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률과 다른 굴절률을 갖도록 불순물 도핑되어 형성되는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
- 제15항에 있어서,상기 반사기는상기 주 도파로의 굴절률 및 상기 가지 도파로의 굴절률과 다른 굴절률을 갖도록 결정 결함이 생성된 반도체로 형성되는, 양방향 광 전송 구조의 도파로.
