FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention generally relates to a conical pleated filter with glue beads to separate the pleats and lock the pleats in a desired shape for use in a conical filter structure.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR ART
[0004] Hot glue beads have been used to maintain spacing for cylindrically shaped filters having pleated filter material. Because the filter material is formed into a cylindrical shape, the pleats have constant (i.e., uniform) spacing from the top end of the filter to the bottom end. Accordingly, a glue bead can be placed at any location from the top to the bottom of the cylinder.
[0005] Maintaining pleat spacing (i.e., avoiding pleat pinching or collapse) is important for effective use of the filter. However, it is difficult to maintain such spacing for configurations with pleats that do not have uniform spacing.
[0006] The present invention is designed to overcome problems associated with prior designs and provide an enhanced non-cylindrically shaped filter.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] The present invention provides a conical shaped filter having a pleated filter material. Because the filter is formed into a conical shape, the pleats have a non-uniform spacing along the outer and inner surface of the filter moving from one end to the other. To help prevent pleats from collapsing, the filter includes one or more hot glue beads extending along an interior surface proximate the top of the conical shape of the filter. Placement of glue beads at this location helps maintain pleat spacing along the length of the filter.
[0008] In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a conical filter with spaced pleating is provided. The conical filter comprises a layer of pleated filter material formed into a conical shape having a hollow interior. The conical shape has a first open end having a first circumference and a second open end having a second circumference wherein the second circumference is larger than the first circumference (while the ends of the conical shape are described in terms of a circumference, any other similar or related measurement, e.g., radius or diameter or circular area, can be used to distinguish the small end of a conical shape from the large end). To maintain even spacing of the pleats throughout the conical shape, a first glue bead is placed on the filter material proximate the first end of the conical end. The first glue bead is approximately 1 inch from the top opening. Preferably, the glue bead is formed along an interior surface of the filter material.
[0009] In addition to the first glue bead the conical filter can include a second glue bead placed on the filter material proximate to the first glue bead. A third (or more) glue bead can be placed on the filter material proximate to the second glue bead (similarly additional glue beads can be applied if necessary depending on the size of the filter). The glue bead can be formed from a hot melt glue.
[0010] The conical filter further comprises a support structure. The support structure can include an expanded metal frame adjacent an interior surface of the filter material. Similarly, the support structure can include an expanded metal frame adjacent to an exterior surface of the filter material.
[0011] In accordance with another aspect of the invention, a filter comprising a filter material having a plurality of vertically extending pleats and formed into a conical shape is provided. The filter includes a first glue bead extending along an interior surface of the filter material proximate a top portion of the filter material. Additionally, the filter can include a second glue bead and a third glue bead extending along the interior surface proximate the top portion of the filter material. [0012] The filter can include a support structure having an outer expanded metal frame (having a plurality of openings ) surrounding an outer surface of the filter material and an inner expanded metal frame surrounding the interior surface of the filter material. The support structure can further include a first end cap connecting the outer expanded metal frame to the inner expanded metal frame at a first end of the filter, and a second end cap connecting the outer expanded metal frame to the inner expanded metal frame at a second end of the filter.
[0013] The filter can include a support structure in the form of a polymeric band around the outer surface. The polymeric band can be glued to the outer tips of the pleats.
Alternatively, the band can be sonically welded to the pleat tips.
[0014] Further aspects of the invention are disclosed in the description of the invention, including the Figures and/or Attachments.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0015] To understand the present invention, it will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
[0016] FIGURE 1 is a partial perspective view of an interior portion of a conical filter with glue beads along an inner circumference in accordance with the present invention;
[0017] FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of a filter material for a conical filter spread out in a fan shape and the completed conical filter;
[0018] FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of filter material in a conical shape; and,
[0019] FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of a conical filter in accordance with the present invention having an outer polymeric band.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0020] While this invention is susceptible of embodiments in many different forms, there is shown in the drawings what will herein be described in detail preferred embodiments of the invention with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplification of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the broad aspect of the invention to the embodiments illustrated. [0021] Figure 3 shows a filter material 10 having a plurality of pleats 12 formed into a generally conical shape 14. The conical shape 14 has a first circular opening 16 at a top end 18 and a second circular opening (not shown) at a bottom end 20 (as used herein, directional terms such as top/bottom are used in connection with the filter or filter material as positioned or oriented in the Figures being referenced and are not intended to limit the invention to such filters of filter material in such positions or orientations). In accord with the conical shape 14 of the filter material 10, the first circular opening 16 is smaller than the second circular opening. The interior of the conical shape 14 is hollow.
[0022] Referring to Figure 2, the pleated filter material 10 is shown lying flat in a fan-like profile before being formed into the conical shape 14. Figure 2 also shows the filter material 10 (in a conical shape) in a filter support structure or cartridge 22. The support structure 22 includes an expanded metal frame having a plurality of openings surrounding an outer surface of the conical shape 14. The support structure 22 also includes a first circular end piece 24 over the first end 18 of the conical shape 14 and a second circular end piece 25 (shown in Figure 4) over the second end of the conical shape 14.
[0023] The separation distance (e.g., the distance from the folded edge of one pleat to the folded edge of an adjacent pleat) of the pleats 12 is not uniform throughout the length of the pleats. As is evident in Figure 3, the separation distance of the pleats 12 of the filter material 10 in the conical shape 14 gradually increases from the top of the conical shape 14 to the bottom of the conical shape 14. This is because the first, top end 18 of the conical shape 14 has a smaller circumference than the second, bottom end 20 of the conical shape 14.
[0024] Figure 1 shows a partial perspective view of an interior portion of a conical filter. As illustrated in Figure 1 , an inner surface 26 of the filter material 10 is supported by an interior expanded metal frame 28 having a plurality of openings. As also illustrated, hot glue beads are applied to the inner surface 26 proximate the top end 18 of the conical shape 14. In particular, the inner surface 26 includes a first hot glue bead 30, a second hot glue bead 32 below the first hot glue bead 30, and a third hot glue bead 34 below the second hot glue bead 32. The number and spacing of the hot glue beads can be changed (increased/decreased) as desired. The hot glue beads 30, 32, 34 maintain uniform pleat spacing from the top end 18 of the conical shape 14 to the bottom end 20 of the conical shape 14. [0025] Preferably the filter should include three or more separate hot glue beads proximate the first end or top portion of the filter. The hot glue used for the beads can include an adhesive and a foam (i.e., a the bead can include a certain percentage of glue and a certain percentage of gas, such as nitrogen - e.g., 50% glue, 50% gas). The hot glue beads can be continuous around the circumference of the fan or can be intermittent (i.e., gaps in the bead). Although described in terms of the circumference, the glue is typically applied from one side of the filter material to the other side before the material is formed into the conical shape.
[0026] Figure 4 shows a band 36 extending around and connected to the periphery of the filter material 10 of a conical filter (a cylindrical filter is pictured next to the conical filter). The band is preferably formed from a polymeric material. The band 36 can be glued to the outer edges or tips of the pleats 12. Alternatively, the band 36 can also be ultrasonically welded to the pleats 12. While one band 36 is shown around a midsection of the filter material 10, additional bands 36 can be positioned at other locations around the filter material 10.
[0027] Many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings. It is, therefore, to be understood within the scope of the appended claims the invention may be protected otherwise than as specifically described.
