Description
The present invention relates to an improved hinge mechanism adapted to be used in a cooling device door and an arrangement as to the installation of power cables between the door and the case of said cooling device.
It is to be noted that consumers increasingly tend to place their cooling devices in large kitchen cabinets such that only doors of the same are exposed to the outside. This provides a more appealing look since the cooling device, i.e. the refrigerator or the freezer may become more in harmony with surrounding kitchen furniture. The cooling device door surface is as such flush with the cabinet front and the cooling device is accordingly fully inserted into the cabinet’s inner space.
A problem associated with this trend can be identified as the unsuitability of the present refrigerator doors for opening and closing within the cabinets when such refrigerator doors are flush with the surrounding cabinet front surface. As a solution, one might consider placing the cooling device in a slightly forwarded position where the door can be freely operated. In other words, the axis of rotation of the cooling device door is displaced by a certain amount by moving the device itself forward. This solution is both space-consuming and undesirable for aesthetic reasons. In brief, a cooling device that is permanently protruding out from the cabinet in which it is installed is unappealing to consumers. To this end, hinge mechanisms ensuring that the device can be fully inserted into a cabinet’s inner space such that its door’s outer surface can lie flush with the cabinet front are designed, said hinge mechanisms offering proper usability of the door without any difficulty.
Power cables extending between the door and the case of the cooling device are generally placed through the inside of a conventional hinge mechanism, i.e. they are extended along the rotation axis of the hinge. This approach, while convenient in use with a conventional hinge mechanism, was still prone to cable damage and associated serious hazards. A special hinge mechanism overcoming the above-identified problems according to the invention also requires a special arrangement for installing power cables between the case and the door of the cooling device due to the hinge mechanism’s extended arms and its multi-axis operation design.
A prior art publication in the technical field of the present invention may be referred to as JP2000329451 among others, the document disclosing an arrangement for the settlement of cables to allow connection with an external power supply.
The present invention provides an arrangement as to the installation of power cables between the door and the case of said cooling device, which is defined by the characterizing features as defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a cooling device door hinge mechanism with a cable installation device by means of which power cables are laid between the cooling device’s door and case.
The present invention proposes a cooling device with a hinge mechanism for effecting opening and closing of the device door, said mechanism operating in cooperation with a cable installation device.
The cable installation device of the invention comprises a plurality of cable guiding means having longitudinal axes in parallel with a hinge mechanism component being secured to the cooling device door. Said hinge mechanism component is a door support bracket having a working space apart from the longitudinal axes of said plurality of cable guiding means.
To this end, it is ensured that power cables are disposed through said cable guiding means in a convenient manner without interfering with the hinge mechanism. Further, said cable installation device provides that power cables are securely laid between the case and the door of the cooling device.
The present invention further provides a cable retaining means in the form of an elastic element which flexibly responds to the altered distance of the door relative to the case during opening. It is advantageous in that its flexible structure compensates for the altered distance, which is originating from the displacement of the axis of rotation of the door due to the special structure of the hinge mechanism.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a cooling device whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.

Door cover (4)
Hinge mechanism (5)
Power cable (6)
Cable retaining means (7)
Cable installation device (8)
Case support bracket (9)
Door support bracket (10)

Second pivot arm (12)
Third pivot arm (13)
Fourth pivot arm (14)

Small openings (17)
The present invention relates to a cooling device (1) comprising a case (2), a door (3), a cable installation device (8) within said door (3) for receiving and guiding a power cable (6) extending in between the case (2) and the door (3) and a hinge mechanism (5) along with a cable installation device (8) for effecting opening and closing of the door (3).
The hinge mechanism (5) comprising a first pivot arm (11), a second pivot arm (12), a third pivot arm (13), a fourth pivot arm (14), a case support bracket (9) secured to the case (2) and a door support bracket (10) secured to the door (3), said case support bracket (9) being pivotally connected to a first pivot arm (11), which is in turn pivotally connected to a second pivot arm (12), said second pivot arm (12) being further pivotally connected to said door support bracket (10). A third pivot arm (13) and a fourth pivot arm (14) connect the second and first pivot arms (12, 11) respectively to said case and door support brackets (9, 10).
Rotation axis of the door (3) during opening thereof is first displaced outwardly in the reverse direction of the cooling device case (2) and then displaced in the direction of the remote end of the door (3) from the hinge mechanism (5) when the door (3) is fully opened. This provides that the door (3) while first moving in the reverse direction of the cooling device case (2), jumps over the corner edge of a neighboring cabinet. The axis of rotation then moves left for a left-side opening door (3). The same analogy equally applies to a right-side opening door as well.
The cooling device (1) of the present invention proposes a cable installation device (8) having a cable guiding means (16) extending on top of the door support bracket (10) of the hinge mechanism (5) and disposed in parallel therewith. Said cable guiding means (16) is a channel longitudinally extending along the upper plane of the cooling device door (3).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the cable guiding means (16) has a plurality of small openings (17) along its longitudinal axis. Said small openings (17) of the cable guiding means (16) provide that heat dissipation is enhanced in the vicinity of the hinge mechanism (5).
Further, it is possible that the cable guiding means (16) is laid beside said hinge mechanism (5) or under the same, extending in parallel with the door support bracket (10) in both cases. These two situations are respectively demonstrated in Fig.9 and Fig.10.
The cable installation device (8) of the present invention with the cable guiding means (16) in the form of a closed channel apart from the working space of the hinge mechanism (5) ensures that the power cable (6) is laid between the case (2) and the door (3) of the cooling device (1), without interfering with the operation of the hinge mechanism (5). The power cable (6) therefore provides electrical power to a display medium provided on the door (3) surface of the cooling device (1). A door cover (4) in the form of a surface plate may be provided to cover the exposed components on the upper surface of the door (3)
The cable installation device (8) of the present invention preferably operates in cooperation with a cable retaining means (7) secured to the roof of the cooling device (1) at a suitable location beside said hinge mechanism (5). Said cable retaining means (7), in the form of a flexible member having a channel whose longitudinal axis coincides with the surface normal of the roof, provides a cable entry into the case (2) of said cooling device (1). The fact that the door (3) of the cooling device (1) is first displaced outwardly in the reverse direction of the cooling device case (2) during opening, due to the operation principle of the hinge mechanism (5), the elastic structure of the cable retaining means (7) compensates for the increased distance between the case (2) and the door (3), compared to the distance in the closed position of the door (3).
According to the present invention, the first pivot arm (11) and the second pivot arm (12) of the hinge mechanism (5) are pivotally connected to each other by means of a positioning pin (15) located simultaneously between longitudinal ends of said first and second pivot arms (11, 12).
The present invention provides a cooling device (1) with a cable installation device (8) ensuring that the power cable (6) is laid between the case (2) and the door (3) of the cooling device, without interfering with the operation of the hinge mechanism (5), the latter ensuring that the cooling device is fully insertable into a cabinet’s inner space such that its door’s (3) outer surface can lie flush with the cabinet front.
