Abstract

An image capturing apparatus includes an illumination member to selectively provide a target reference to guide placement of the target within a field of view of an image capturing m ember. The illumination m ember may illuminate the at least one reference guide pattern in an illumination-on mode. The illumination member may also disable the target reference by not illuminating the at least one reference guide pattern in an illumination-off mode.

The printed patterns may be printed on the surface of the receiving member. The physical guides and the printed patterns m ay guide placem ent of the target into a field of view of the respective im age capturing apparatusto form the image of the target .

[0008] Image capturing apparatuses such as multifunction printing system s m ay capture an image of a target. The im age capturing apparatuses may include a receiving memberto receive the target. The receiving m ember may include physical guides and/or printed patterns. The physical guides m ay extend outward from a surface of the receiving member. Alternatively, the printed patterns m ay be printed on a surface of the receiving member. The physical guides and the printed patterns may guide placement of the target into a field of viewof the respective image capturing apparatus to form the image of the target . P hysical guides extending outward from the surface of the receiving surface, however, m ay obstruct an ability to organize the target on the receiving member and the rem oval of the target the re from . Also , the captured im age of the target m ay include the printed pattern on the receiving member requiring rem oval by an image process resulting in an increased im age processing time .
[0009] In exam pies, an image capturing apparatus may include an im age capturing m ember, a platen, and an illumination mem ber. The im age capturing m em ber may capture an im age of a target. The platen m ay include a receiving mem ber having at least one reference guide pattern . The receiving m ember may receive the target for the im age capturing memberto capture the image thereof . The illum ination m ember may selectively provide a target reference to guide placement of the target within a field of viewof the im age capturing m ember. That is, the illumination mem ber m ay selectively illuminate at least one reference guide pattern in an illum ination-on m ode and disable the target reference by not illuminating the at least one reference guide pattern in an ilium in ation-off mode. For example, the reference guide pattern may be selectively turned off not to appear in the image of the target and not extend outward from a surface of the receiving member. Thus, the reference guide pattern may not obstruct the ability to organiie and remove the target from the receiving mem ber. Additionally, the image processing tim e m ay not increase as the image of the target may include the reference guide pattern which selectively blends into the industrial design of the receiving mem ber at the tim e of im age capture.

[0013] Referring to FIGS.2A-3, in some examples, the image capturing member 10 may capture an image of atarget 25. For exam pie, the im age capturing m ember 10 m ay be a scanner to scan the target 25 to form an im age , a cam era to take a picture of the target 25, and the like. The target 25 maybe a photograph, a document, an object, and the like. The platen 12 may indude a receiving member 13 having at least one reference guide pattern 24a and 24b. At least one reference guide pattern 24a and 24b may be formed of a translucent section 34. For example, the translucent section 34 of the reference guide pattern 24a and 24b may pass and diffuse light provided by an illumination member 15 to provide an illuminated target reference. In some examples, the translucent section 34 may be semi-opaque. Accordingly, in some examples, the reference guide pattern 24a and 24b may blend into the industrial design of the receiving member 13 and/or platen 12 in the
illumination-off mode as illustrated in FIG.2C. The receiving member 13 may receive the target 25 for the im age capturing m ember 10 to capture the im age thereof. For example, the receiving member 13 may be a substantially flat receiving surface. I n some examples, the illumination mem ber 1 5 may be disposed behind the receiving m ember 1 3 and/or in a cavity 36 of the platen 12. Accordingly, at least one reference guide pattern 24a and 24b may be backside ilium inated guides. In an ilium ination-off m ode , the ilium ination member 1 5 may selectively disable the target reference by not illuminating at least one reference guide pattern 24a and 24b. For example, the ilium ination membeM 5 m ay be turned off in the ilium ination-off mode . Alternatively, in some examples, the target reference may be disabled by shielding the illumination m em ber 15 from ilium inating the target reference. In som e examples, the illumination member 1 5 may be a light source such as light bulbs, light em itting diodes, and the like.
[0015] Referring to FI GS . 2A-3, in some examples, the platen 1 2 may also indude a base mem ber 39 , an interm ediate mem ber 37 disposed behind the receiving member 1 3, and a cavity 36 formed between the interm ediate member 37 and the base m ember 39. In som e exam ples, each one of the receiving m ember 1 3, the base member 39, and the intermediate m ember 37 may include an opaque area having a same color. The m ounting member 21 may include a first end 21 a coupled to the im age capturing m ember 1 0 and a second end 21 b coupled to the platen 1 2.
[0016] Referring to FI GS . 2A-3, in some examples, the m ounting member 21 may include an extended state (FIG . 2B) in which the image capturing m ember 1 0 coupled thereto is spaced apart and extended above the receiving m ember 1 3 to capture the image of the target 25 received on the receiving m ember 1 3. The m ounting mem ber 21 may include a retracted state (FIG . 2C) in which the image capturing mem ber 1 0 coupled thereto and the mounting m ember 21 are placed in a m ounting receiving area adjacent to sides of the platen 1 2. In some examples, at least one reference guide pattern 14 may include a plurality of reference guide patterns 24a and 24b. Each one of the reference guide patterns 24a and 24b m ay correspond to a respective target having a different siie. For example, a first target m ay be a 5 by 7 inch photograph and a second target may be an 8 14 by 1 1 inoh sheet of paper.
[0017] Fl G. 4 is a block diagram illustrating a m ultifunction printing system according to an exam ple . Referring to FIG . 4, in some examples, a multifunction printing system 410 includes a printing device 48 and an image capturing apparatus 400 . The printing device 48 may form a printed image on a substrate . For exam pie, the printing device 48 m ay include a print bar, printhead modules, binary ink developers, and the like . In som e exam pies, the im age capturing apparatus 400 m ay indude the image capturing member 10 , the ilium ination member 1 5, the m ounting mem ber 21 , and the platen 12 including the receiving mem ber 1 3 , the base m ember 39, the interm ediate member 37, and the cavity 36 as previously described with respect to FIGS . 1 - 3. The image capturing mem ber 1 0 may capture an im age of a target. The intermediate m ember 37 m ay be disposed behind the receiving mem ber 1 3. The cavity 36 m ay be form ed between the intermediate m ember 37 and the base mem ber 39. The receiving member 1 3 may include a reference guide pattern 14 form ed of a translucent section. The receiving m em ber 13 may receive the target for the image capturing mem ber 10 to capture the im age thereof.
[0018] The m ounting mem ber 21 may m ount the image capturing member 1 0 thereon a distance away from the receiving m ember 1 3. The mounting m ember 21 m ay include an extended state (FIG . 2B) in which the im age capturing m ember 10 coupled thereto is spaced apart and extended above the receiving member 1 3 to capture the image of the target received on the receiving member 1 3. The mounting mem ber 21 may also include a retracted state (FIG . 2C) in which the im age capturing m ember 1 0 coupled thereto and the mounting m em ber 21 are placed in a mounting receiving area adjacent to sides of the platen 1 2 . The ilium ination member 1 5 may selectively provide a target reference to guide placement of the target within a field of viewof the image capturing mem ber 1 0 by illuminating the reference guide pattern 1 4 in an ill urn ination -on mode. The illumination m em ber 1 5 may disable the target reference by not ilium inating the reference guide pattern 14 in an ill urn ination -off mode. Alternatively, in some examples, the target reference may be disabled by shielding the illum ination member 1 5 from illuminating the target reference.
[0019] Fl G. 5 is a flowchart illustrating a m ethod of capturing an im age of a target according to an exam pie . Referring to FIG . 5, in block Ξ510, a target reference to guide placem ent of the target within a field of viewof an im age capturing m ember is provided by ilium inating a reference guide pattern of a receiving m ember of a platen by an illumination mem ber in an ilium ination- on mode . In block Ξ512 , the target is received on the receiving m ember having the reference guide pattern form ed of a translucent section. For example , the translucent section of the reference guide pattern may pass and diffuse light provided by an illumination mem ber to provide an illum inated target reference . In block Ξ51 4, the target reference is disabled by not ilium inating the reference guide pattern by the illum ination member in an illumination-off mode. I n some examples, the target reference is disabled prior to the capturing the image of the target by the image capturing member. In some examples, the target reference may be disabled by turning off the ilium ination member. Alternatively, the target reference may be disabled by shielding the illumination m em ber from ilium inating the target reference . In block Ξ51 6, the im age of the target is captured by the image capturing mem ber. I n some examples, capturing the im age of the target by the im age capturing m ember occurs after providing the target reference to guide placement of the target within the field of view of the image capturing m em ber.

Claims

CLAIMS WH AT IS CLAIME D IS:
1 . A method of capturing an image of a target, the m ethod comprising:
providing a target reference to guide placement of the target within a field of viewof an image capturing mem ber by illuminating a reference guide pattern of a receiving member of a platen by an illumination mem ber in an ilium ination- on m ode;
receiving the target on the receiving mem ber having the reference guide pattern form ed of a translucent section;
disabling the target reference by not illum inating the reference guide pattern by the illumination m ember in an ilium ination-off m ode; and
capturing the im age of the target by the image capturing m ember.
2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the disabling the target reference by not illuminating the reference guide pattern by the ilium ination mem ber in an ilium ination-off m ode occurs prior to the capturing the im age of the target by the image capturing mem ber.
3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the capturing the image of the target by the im age capturing m ember occurs after the providing the target reference to guide placement of the target within the field of viewof the im age capturing member.
4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the platen further comprises:
a base mem ber, an intermediate member disposed behind the receiving mem ber, and a cavity formed between the intermediate mem ber and the base mem ber.
5. The method according to claim 4, wherein each one of the receiving member, the base member, the intermediate mem ber, and the receiving member includes an opaque area having a same color, and wherein the translucent section is semi-opaque.
6. An image capturing apparatus, comprising:
an image capturing mem ber to capture an image of a target;
a platen including a receiving m ember having at least one reference guide pattern , the receiving memberto receive the target for the image capturing m ember to capture the im age thereof; and
an illumination mem ber to selectively provide a target reference to guide placement of the target within a field of view of the image capturing m ember by illum inating the at least one reference guide pattern in an illumination-on mode and disable the target reference by not illuminating the at least one reference guide pattern in an ill urn i nation -off mode.
7. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the at least one reference guide pattern is form ed of a translucent section.
8. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the ilium ination m ember is disposed behind the receiving m ember.
9. The image capturing apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the platen further com prises:
a base mem ber, an intermediate member disposed behind the receiving mem ber, and a cavity formed between the intermediate mem ber and the base mem ber.
10. The im age capturing apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the illum ination m ember is disposed in the cavity.
11 . The im age capturing apparatus according to claim 7, Wierein each one of the receiving m ember, the base m ember, and the intermediate member includes an opaque area having a same color.
12. The im age capturing apparatus according to claim 1 1 , w+ierein the translucent section is semi-opaque.
13. The im age capturing apparatus according to claim 6, further comprising:
a mounting m em ber having a first end coupled to the image capturing mem ber and a second end coupled to the platen .
14. The im age capturing apparatus according to claim 7, Wierein the at least one reference guide pattern includes a plurality of reference guide patterns, each one of the reference guide patterns corresponding to a respective target having a different siie.
15. A multifunction printing system , comprising:
a printing device to form a printed image on a substrate; and
an image capturing apparatus, comprising:
an image capturing m ember to capture an im age of a target;
a platen including a receiving member, a base mem ber, an intermediate mem ber disposed behind the receiving mem ber, and a cavity formed between the interm ediate mem ber and the base mem ber;
the receiving m ember including a reference guide pattern formed of a translucent section, the receiving m ember to receive the target for the image capturing member to capture the image thereof;
a mounting m ember to m ount the im age capturing member thereon a distance away from the receiving member; and an illumination mem ber to selectively provide a target reference to guide placem ent of the target vuthin a field of viewof the im age capturing mem ber by illuminating the reference guide pattern in an illumination-on mode and disable the target reference by not illuminating the reference guide pattern in an illumination-off mode.
