Technical Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a kit for modular structures used as furniture, as stages or as display units. The kit is composed out of a minimum of different kind of parts and allows to build modular structures with aesthetic pleasing outer surfaces without reducing the construction design freedom.
Background Art
The invention disclosed in WO 2012/152096 Al is a kit for modular constructions using 3 kind of parts: a structural panel, a ribpanel and connecting plug. The later has the purpose of physically connecting the structural panels to the ribpanels. A different ribpanel is needed for every different configuration of structural panels leading to at least 12 types of ribpanels. This results in a kit with many different parts and makes constructing a certain modular structure time consuming. A similar story can be told for the invention disclosed in US 2007/0132345 Al, this uses a framework of ribpanels connected by different types of corner elements and the different kind of structural panels are fitted into this framework.
The invention disclosed in DE 2102284 describes a kit where the structural panels have acceptor cavities along the sides. These structural panels can be linked together or to ribpanels via the addition of a connector plug in these cavities. These kits have many different part and/or leave connecting members visible at the outside surface of the finished modular constructions disturbing the aesthetics of the product in use.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention proposes a kit for modular structures suitable for the construction of furniture, stages or display units comprising :
one or more structural panels,
- one or more ribpanels, having the opportunity to connect with the structural panels,
one or more corner elements, having the opportunity to connect with the ribpanels,
and one or more connecting elements, having the opportunity to connect 2 different ribpanels,
characterised in that,
all corner elements have at utmost 2 faces with connecting members on the surface; all connecting elements have at utmost 2 faces with connecting members on the surface.
The present invention also describes a modular structure, using a kit, where all faces of the panels and elements directed to the outside of the modular structure form one smooth continuous surface only interrupted by the seams between the different parts:

The parts of the kit can be connected to each other via a snap fit connection, resulting in a fast and easy way to build complex modular structures.
A method to produce a kit as described in the invention, where the parts can be produced via injection moulding in an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene / polycarbonate mixture.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The invention relates to a construction kit, consisting of a structural panel and ribpanel where each plane can connect at the same level with each other and with a fitting ribpanel able to connect in order to make it a fully closed surface system. An advantage of a construction kit according to the invention is that it gives an easy way a platform fixture or furniture system can be built up, consisting of several interconnected panels according to the invention, on which for instance products can be presented to display.
In this document a structural panel means:
any sheet material used in the construction of furniture and stages;
made out of plastics, wood, metal or a composite material; and,
- at least one surface is finished conforming the aesthetic demands of the outside surface of the piece of furniture or stage.
The short sides of the structural panel refers to the sides of the panel containing the connecting members, the sides not being part of the outer surface of the stage or furniture.
In this document a ribpanel means: rod, joist, bar, beam, allowing the connection of 2 structural panels in a corner connection.
In this document a corner element means any device that can connects (at least visually) 2 ribpanels in a 90 degree angle with each other. In this document a connecting element means any device being able to connect (physically) 2 ribpanels parallel to each other and being part of the outer surface while preforming its function. Technical element is used as a synonym for connecting element.
In this document a Blox refers to a combination of at least structural panels and ribpanels enclosing a cavity.
In this document a connecting members refer to the connecting system used to link parts of the kit to each other. The term refers to the donor element and the acceptor element in the connection.
In this document fastener refers to a system to connect parts that are not part of the kit to the modular structure build by using the kit.
In this document a decorative finishing panel member refers to a sheet material with the single purpose to decorate the modular structure build by using the kit. In this document the demands of the outer surface of the modular structure, is that no visual technical elements or connecting members are present on the surface of a finished modular structure.
The present invention proposes a kit for modular structures suitable for the construction of furniture, stages or display units comprising :
one or more structural panels,
- one or more ribpanels, having the opportunity to connect with the structural panels,
one or more corner elements, having the opportunity to connect with the ribpanels,
and one or more connecting elements, having the opportunity to connect 2 different ribpanels,
characterised in that,
all corner elements have at utmost 2 faces with connecting members on the surface;
all connecting elements have at utmost 2 faces with connecting members on the surface.
In one preferred embodiment, said kit for modular structures can be used for making structures comprising open or closed cavities. In another preferred embodiment, said kit for modular structures can be used for making open structures not containing cavities, such as in a "snake design". In yet another preferred embodiment, said kit for modular structures can be used for making structures comprising both (i) open or closed cavities and (ii) open structures without cavities such as in a "snake design". Preferably, the connection system used in this invention is based on a snap-fit principle, where "male" connecting members (donor bodies) have one or more "snaphooks" on its surface and "female" receiving cavities (connector accepting cavities) locking the "snaphooks" in place, resulting in a tight connection of the 2 parts.
The kit is designed in such a way that with a minimum of different kind of part complex modular structures can be built with a high degree of construction design freedom. The minimum of parts makes building a modular structure easy and fast. The universal nature of the construction kit can be various configurations of podiums in a quick and efficient manner with a minimum work to build. The structural panel is foreseen of connecting elements in such a way that the connecting elements are able to interlock along all the short sides of the structural panels. This then provides the advantage that it is sufficient with standard structural panel and ribpanel, to create various pieces of furniture for different purposes, and to contribute in accordance with a desired three-dimensional configuration.
The structural panel and the different parts, according to the present invention, can be manufactured with the advantage that they are light and yet have sufficient rigidity. Preferably, said structural panel and the different parts are made of plastic. Also preferably, said structural panel is comprised of two parts, which are preferably identical. The various parts are monolithic and in one piece according to a known technique, such as injection moulding.
The enclosed cavity with structural panels, can be used either as furniture, either as a product stage, either as storage space and a decorative finishing panels can be added. Aesthetics of the whole decorative finishing panel can be according to the needs and wishes of the customer with the necessary decoration features. The decorative finishing panel can be connected to the structure by means of a clamp- connection allowing fast and easy addition or removal of the decorative finishing panel. An alternative to this kind of connection can be the use of magnets hidden in the corner elements and magnets on the decorative finishing panel.
The invention described here, with a structural panel giving the possibility to clamp in maximum 2-ways other structural panels or ribpanels, causing the corners of ribpanels and corners to be completely closed and clean surface. The invention as described here uses a composition in which double-panel and double ribpanels are being used for the assembly of multiple volumes.
The present invention also describes a modular structure, using a kit where all faces of the panels and elements directed to the outside of the modular structure form one smooth continuous surface only interrupted by the seams between the different parts:
at utmost one kind of corner element;
at utmost one kind of connecting element;
- at utmost one kind of ribpanel;
not using any lids or other objects to hide connecting members, whereas this kit can be used to build a modular structure containing multiple cavities.
The current invention can be assembled as completely closed sub-assemblies and uses a polar connection that is invisible when in use.
The current invention has the advantage that complete sub-assemblies can be interconnected and as such it is not needed to always start building with separate components.
The current invention describes a solution where all the connecting members are already integrated parts of the panel so very few separate connecting element are needed.
The present invention has the advantage that all the outwardly facing visible surfaces of construction, are fully closed and very aesthetically pleasing. An advantage of the present invention is that compositions are completely closed and there are no technical open elements visible, without that the 3 dimensional degree of construction design freedom is limited in a way.
In another arrangement, the ribpanels are rotated so that the visible closed surfaces of the ribpanel are oriented towards the inside. An advantage of the present invention in this composition is that the inner surfaces are completely closed and there are no technical elements visible.
An advantage of the present invention is that there is a minimum number of parts are required, and a maximum number of possibilities. With only 4 parts being structural panel, ribpanel, corner element and connecting element, a lot of different configurations can be made.
An advantage of the present invention is that with these mentioned few components the user can make completely closed 3-dimensional compositions of different sizes and in which the same identical parts can be used for both rectangular frames as for top lids or for end lids.
An advantage of the present invention is that the structural panel, whether or not in combination with ribpanel or with components as corner element or connecting element can be used together in applications where there is a cavity or no cavity at all being created between the panels, and that the parts can be used both as a 2-dimensional configuration as in a 3-dimensional configuration. An advantage of the present invention is that several types of connections can be used between the sub-assemblies and the components separately, which result in different degree of connection tension between the different parts and assemblies. This way the assembly and disassembly is more controlled. It is easier to separate corner elements and connecting elements than it is to separate ribpanels from a structural plate.
An advantage of the construction kit according to the invention is that they are very thick (preferably a thickness of between 4 and 6 cm). This thickness gives a user experience of high quality. With this thickness the panels can be also used as a single or in a double structural panel to be uses as a 5 or 10 cm wall divider or floor platform for example, without the need of additional components to increase the minimum height needed for this application.
An advantage of a construction kit according to the invention is that the finished product has very well finished visible closed surfaces without any technical elements, though that the invention is also very functional at the same time.
In some constructions with other kits, the structural panels contain technical features on the outer visible surfaces. As a solution for this disadvantage, construction kit as described here will only use connecting element between the corner elements of each assembly of the invention. The structural panels or ribpanels in described invention are not always used to clamp into other outside systems connections. This allows the ribpanel and structural panels to remain completely seamless as no outer connections are needed in this location. Thus, the assembly of the constructions are being made by a combination of panels and ribpanel and the connections between platform products are made with only corner elements.
The corner elements and connecting element can be installed in all orientations, (the corner elements are free to rotate around its own axis or around the axis of the ribpanel and may be still attached). The corner elements can be mechanically attached to each other in every direction. Thus, the corner elements have no mechanical structural properties in the composition of a Blox of its own. The little corner element of 50x50 mm is not necessary needed in the assembly of a Blox. One can clamp or release corner elements without the need to disassemble a Blox! Furthermore, the corner elements can have integrated recessed fasteners which can be, for example, used for the installation of wheels, levelling feet, knobs or hangers.
The construction kit according to the invention is characterized in that the length of the legs or male connecting members on the side of the structural panel are together less long than the total length of the side of the ground plane of the structural panel minus the length of the legs of the adjacent side of the structural panel.
In a preferred embodiment, the construction kit according to the invention is characterized in that male connecting element extending from the panel to make outer connections. This way there are no separate male connecting element needed to connect panels to other panels. This saves a lot of material and time to assemble and this gives a stronger result.
In a preferred embodiment, on the 4 short sides of the structural panel there are male connecting element, so that the ribpanel always is connected on to the structural panel, so this way the corner elements do not have to provide for any mechanical connection between the different ribpanel when assembled as a composition, with the extend that the corner elements can be easily releases into any position or orientation and can be easily be swapped or changed with a connecting element.
Preferably, the basic size of the structure has a base panel whose length and width are substantially the same. This is easier to use and understand for 3D compositions than systems with a panel whose length is longer than the width. The invention is characterized by a structural panel which only has connections in directions which are parallel to the main plane of the structural panel. The invention is characterized by panels that do not have an integrated structure of ribpanel functionality in the structural panel, so not for example puzzle pieces that have no separate ribpanels. One reason to have separate ribpanels and structural panels is that in the construction of furniture, which have an open face, there is always a ribpanel required to produce a fully closed surface structure. With the use of additional ribpanels the assemblies are easier and more readable then systems that not has separate ribpanels.
The structural panel has optional circular cut-out openings in the centre of the panel for the passage of cables or the use of inserts such as tubes, cable covers, LED lights, monitor arms and extensions that can to mount in circular holes.
Preferably, the structural panels are only 30x30 cm so that the total area of the panels with male connector elements fit into the modular dimensions of 40x40 cm, an efficient size for stacking on the euro pallet for transport.
Preferably, the construction kit is been made in a thermoplastic material by injection moulding, and in particular preferably is the construction kit made from a blend of the thermoplastic Polycarbonate / acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC / ABS) or in extend with thermoplastics such as Polyvinylchloride or acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (PVC or ASA) that are the only commercial thermoplastics having standard flame retardant properties and a beautiful appearance. The construction kit as proposed in the present invention does not need to use larger structural panels since it would lose much of its construction design freedom.
The interconnections between the panel and ribpanel are stronger and therefore less easy to disassemble then the connections between ribpanel and connecting element. The connection between ribpanel and connecting element is looser and easier. This simplifies the installation.
In a preferred embodiment, an advantage of a construction kit according to the invention is that they are using 2 identical panels in order to make a very sturdy and aesthetically pleasing result such as a sandwich panel. The structural panels are preferably closed along two sides in order to offer a better quality experience and thus to make furniture that directly has 2 a smooth closed side.
An additional advantage of this feature is that all planes can be closed so the cavity can be used directly to display goods within the aesthetical appealing closed surfaces. Another advantage of panels used as double-sided structures is related to production. If an injection moulded part is to be a single piece of 5cm high the minimum draft angle need to be used to extract the product from the mould and as such the top of the ribs reinforcing the panel will be very thin, and the time to produce it will be very long.
While using the kit for making furniture, an advantage to the present invention described above is that the connecting structure between the ribpanel panels can also be accessible to the user after the furniture has been assembled.
In comparison to other kits where the whole construction need to be disassembled to change the configuration, the invention as described allows that the volume of individual assemblies or as complete linked systems can be used on its own.
The advantage of the invention as described, is that the structural panel has a continuous passage that accommodates a connector for various panels extended over large lengths together. By making use of such a long connector, the required structural stiffness of the horizontal connection between the components can be achieved by making use of the larger dimensions of the connector with respect to the structural panel component. Thus, a line of products can be created for heavy furniture of various kinds with a minimal number of components in a modular interchangeable system.
The emergence of new technologies are often built from an aesthetic and functional point of view It is often difficult to store annoying cables without losing the ability to easily change the cables. A very advantageous feature of this embodiment as described is characterized by the possible round cut-out in the centre of the structural panel to have an optional opening on the side of the cabinet which create these openings and allow a 3-dimensional passage for the passage of cables all over the furniture assembly.
The invention also describes the addition of a decorative finishing panel with the purpose to cover the seams between the parts of the kit and aesthetically covering the whole modular structure. Some parts of the kit are provided with fasteners allowing the attachment of the decorative finishing panel. The decorative finishing panel has preferably the thickness of 0.3 to 1 mm. To obtain the impression of a high quality product, plastics are advisable over paper or cardboard for the material used to create this panel. Thicknesses higher 1 mm lead to a visual seem and disturbed corners when more than one panel is being used. The decorative finishing panel can be decorated according the clients preferences. The decorative finishing panel can be quickly removed and replaced by the use of fasteners. This allows the addition of decorations and patterns to the furniture and results in an aesthetically pleasing finish. The decorative finishing panel has to be made out of the same material as the structural panels, but the addition of prints and design can be done by thermic offset or a printing technique.
The kit according to the invention allows to build units without the need to pay attention to the direction in which the modular structure is build. Examples of embodiments of the invention

Claims

A kit for modular structures suitable for the construction of furniture, stages or display units comprising :
one or more structural panels,
one or more ribpanels, having the opportunity to connect with the structural panels,
one or more corner elements, having the opportunity to connect with the ribpanels,
and one or more connecting elements, having the opportunity to connect 2 different ribpanels,
characterised in that,
all corner elements have at utmost 2 faces with connecting members on the surface;
all connecting elements have at utmost 2 faces with connecting members on the surface.
A kit for modular structures according to claim 1, characterised in that the structural panel has connecting members along the sides.
A kit for modular structures according to preceding claims, characterised in that the ribpanels are beam shaped structures with :
2 opposite faces comprising a connecting member;
2 abreast faces comprising a connecting member;
the 2 remaining abreast faces are having a surface finished according to the demands of the outside surface of the modular structure.
A kit for modular structures according to preceding claims, characterised in that the corner elements are beam shaped structures with :
2 faces comprising a connecting member;
3 or more faces are having a surface finished according to the demands of the outside surface of the modular structure.
A kit for modular structures according to preceding claims, characterised in that the connecting elements are beam shaped structures with :
2 faces comprising a connecting member;
2 or more faces are having a surface finished according to the demands of the outside surface of the modular structure.
A kit for modular structures according to preceding claims, characterised in that the different part of the kit connect to each other via a "snap-fit" principal.
A kit for modular structures according to preceding claims, characterised in that the individual parts are made out of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene.
8. A kit for modular structures according to preceding claims, characterised in that the corner elements are provided with fasteners to connect elements not contained in the kit for modular structure.
9. A modular structure, using a kit according to claim 1 to 8, where all faces of the panels and elements directed to the outside of the modular structure form one smooth continuous surface only interrupted by the seams between the different parts, and using :
o at utmost one kind of corner element;
o at utmost one kind of connecting element;
o at utmost one kind of ribpanel;
o not using any lids or other objects to hide connecting members, whereas this kit can be used to build a modular structure containing multiple cavities.
10. A modular structure according to claim 9, with a decorative finishing panel added via fasteners in the corner elements.
11. Method for the production of a kit for modular structures according to preceding claims, via injection moulding.
