Description
DUSTLESS PICK-UP HEAD AND GUTTER BROOM APPARATUS
RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001] This application is a non-provisional application claiming priority from United States
Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61/543,779 filed on October 5, 2011, which is herein incorporated by reference.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The present invention relates to pick-up heads and gutter brooms on surface cleaning vehicles, and more particularly to pick-up heads and gutter brooms on surface cleaning vehicles.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] In prior art surface cleaning vehicles having at least one gutter broom with a gutter broom housing surrounding the gutter broom, it is known to connect the gutter broom housing in fluid communication with the main suctioning main fan such that the main fan suctions dust-laden air from the gutter broom housing. An air suctioning duct is connected at its inlet end in fluid communication with the gutter broom housing and is connected at its outlet end in fluid communication with the large conduit that leads from the pick-up head to the main suctioning main fan.
[0004] There is a significant problem with this particular arrangement. Since air is suctioned off the large conduit(debris suction tube) that leads from the pick-up head to hopper under vacuum from the main suctioning main fan, suction power is decreased. The negative vacuum pressure is decreased beyond this suction loss which is actually at or near the surface where pickup of all harvested debris is performed and any loss of performance here results in debris left behind because it is past final point of pickup. This is highly undesirable as it allows for some material to remain on the surface and can cause fugitive dust emissions to escape the pick-up head.
[0005] It is an object of the present invention to provide a dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus wherein suction power within the area of pick-up is unaffected.
[0006] It is another object of the present invention to provide a dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus that allows for the complete removal of material from the surface being swept.
[0007] It is another object of the present invention to provide a dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus that precludes the escape of fugitive dust emissions from the pick-up head.
[0008] It is another object of the present invention to provide a dustless pickup head and gutter broom apparatus that docs not require the use of an independent dustless system for suctioning dust-laden air from the gutter broom(s).
[0009] It is another object of the present invention to provide a dustless pickup head and gutter broom apparatus that utilizes the same air suctioned from the pick-up head to suction dust-laden air from
the gutter broom(s) without impacting the negative pressure in the area where the pickup of harvested debris occurs.

[00016] Figure 2 is a top plan view of the second preferred embodiment of the dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus according to the present invention.
[00017] Figure 3 is a top plan view of the third preferred embodiment of the dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus according to the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[00018] Referring to Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings, it will be noted that Figure 1 illustrates a first preferred embodiment of the dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus according to the present invention, Figure 2 illustrates a second preferred embodiment of the dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus according to the present invention and Figure 3 illustrates a third preferred embodiment of the dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus according to the present invention.
[00019] Reference will now be made to Figure 1, which shows a first preferred embodiment of the dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus according to the present invention, as indicated by the general reference numeral 100. The first preferred embodiment dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus 100 comprises an air suctioning main fan 102 mounted on a surface cleaning vehicle 1 4. A pick-up head 110 has a first end 111 and a second end 112, a front face 114, a suctioning bottom opening 116, a debris-laden air egress 118, and a gutter broom suctioning inlet 119. A conduit 106 connects the main fan 102 in air suctioning relation with the pick-up head 110 to thereby provide a vacuum or recirculating type pick-up head 110.
[00020] A gutter broom 120 is operatively mounted on the surface cleaning vehicle 104 by means of a gutter broom arm 122 for rotation by a hydraulic motor 124. A gutter broom housing 126 generally surrounds the gutter broom 120 with a debris receiving opening 128 in the gutter broom housing 126 to permit debris to be engaged by the gutter broom 120. An air egress 129 permits the suctioning of debris- laden air from the gutter broom housing 126.
[00021] There is a gutter broom connector conduit 130 that has an inlet 132 and an outlet 134.
The inlet 132 of the gutter broom connector conduit 130 is connected in air receiving relation to the air egress 129 of the gutter broom housing 126 and the air outlet is connected in air delivery relation to the
gutter broom suctioning inlet 119 in the pick-up head 110. The gutter broom suctioning inlet 119 is disposed adjacent the first end 111 of the pick-up head 110, and is horizontally offset with respect to the air egress 129. In the first preferred embodiment, as illustrated, the gutter broom suctioning inlet 119 is laterally offset with respect to the air egress 129. Preferably, there is also a maximum amount of distance between the debris-laden air egress 118 and the gutter broom suctioning inlet 119.
[00022] Reference will now be made to Figure 2, which shows a second preferred embodiment of the dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus according to tire present invention, as indicated by the general reference numeral 200. The second preferred embodiment dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus 200 is similar to the first preferred embodiment dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus 100 except that the gutter broom suctioning inlet 219 is elongate and is disposed adjacent the front face 214 of the pick-up head 210.
Reference will now be made to Figure 3, which shows a third preferred embodiment of the dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus according to the present invention, as indicated by the general reference numeral 300. The third preferred embodiment dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus 300 is similar to the first preferred embodiment dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus 100 except that the pick-up head 310 does not have separate debris receiving openings at the first end 311 and second end 312. Instead, a front debris receiving opening 314 spanning the width "W" of the pick-up head 310. The gutter broom suctioning inlet 319 and the front debris receiving opening 314 are concurrent one with the other, and are forwardly offset with respect to said air egress 318.
[00023] It can readily be seen that in both embodiments of the present invention, as discussed above, the air flow from the gutter broom housing also travels fully through the pick-up head, and is therefore used on the surface being cleaned, unlike in the prior art.
[00024] As can be understood from the above description and from the accompanying drawings, the present invention provides a dustless pick-up head and gutter broom apparatus wherein the air suctioned from the gutter broom housing is also used to suction up dust and debris from the surface being cleaned, all of which features are unknown in the prior art.
[00025] Other variations of the above principles will be apparent to those who are knowledgeable in the field of the invention, and such variations are considered to be within the scope of the present invention. Further, other modifications and alterations may be used in the design and manufacture of the pick-up head for a mobile sweeper of the present invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the accompanying claims.
