Abstract

The present invention relates to a flywheel and its large and heavy supporting base, which are constructed at the point of use with specific tools and a material that is easy to transport, such as a suitable concrete. The flywheel pivots about a vertical axis on a stationary base by way of an air cushion. The flywheel is mounted on one or more concentric circular permanent magnet rotors. The supporting base is equipped with corresponding stators. The device, operating as a motor, powered by various sources of optionally renewable electrical energy, drives the flywheel which, in its generating phase, converts its kinetic energy into electrical power. The power stored in this way falls within a very wide range of powers, ranging from less than 100 kilowatts to more than 2 megawatts. The power captured may have very different characteristics and be converted to meet mains standards or adapted to specific needs. The kinetic energy is either released slowly over a long period of time or released very quickly over a short period of time, for example to rapidly recharge storage batteries. In addition, the present invention relates to the possibility of rotating the flywheel with torque supplied by a rotating shaft.
