Definitions

  • the present invention relates generally to physical therapy and, more particularly, to systems and methods for movement therapy.
  • Prolonged immobility, inactivity or bed rest can have severe physical and psychological consequences for a patient.
  • a patient that is immobile for a prolonged period of time may experience complications to major organ systems, including the skin and musculoskeletal systems, the cardiopulmonary system, and the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems.
  • Complications to the skin and musculoskeletal system of an immobile patient may include pressure sores, muscle weakness, atrophy, and deceased bone density. These complications can lead to disability and dysfunction and, in the case of decreased bone density, can predispose a patient to fractures when the patient is mobilized.
  • Complications to the cardiopulmonary system may include cardiovascular deconditioning, hypostatic hypotension, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and atelectasis.
  • Complications to the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems may include a predisposition to constipation, fecal impaction, urinary tract stones and infection, and fecal and urinary tract incontinence.
  • the psychological consequences for a patient that is immobile for a prolonged period of time may include depression, sensory deprivation from a lack of environmental stimulation, and, in some cases, deliriousness.
  • a physical therapist is required to help a patient complete movement therapy by assisting the lifting and lowering of a patient's limbs or moving portions of a patient's torso.
  • a physical therapist may also apply massage or other touch-related therapy to a patient in connection with or instead of other movement therapy, in any event, the work of a physical therapist can be physically strenuous.
  • a physical therapist may be subject to occupational injury or decreased productivity if the work proves too taxing.
  • the assistance provided by physical therapists may vary by the individual physical therapist, leading to confusion or displeasure on the part of the patient, SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Description

DESCRIPTION
MOVEMENT THERAPY SYSTEM
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0001 ] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61/581,482, filed December 29, 2011 incorporated by reference herein.
BACKGROUND
[0002] The present invention relates generally to physical therapy and, more particularly, to systems and methods for movement therapy.
[0003] Prolonged immobility, inactivity or bed rest can have severe physical and psychological consequences for a patient. For example, a patient that is immobile for a prolonged period of time may experience complications to major organ systems, including the skin and musculoskeletal systems, the cardiopulmonary system, and the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems. Complications to the skin and musculoskeletal system of an immobile patient may include pressure sores, muscle weakness, atrophy, and deceased bone density. These complications can lead to disability and dysfunction and, in the case of decreased bone density, can predispose a patient to fractures when the patient is mobilized. Complications to the cardiopulmonary system may include cardiovascular deconditioning, hypostatic hypotension, deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and atelectasis. Complications to the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems may include a predisposition to constipation, fecal impaction, urinary tract stones and infection, and fecal and urinary tract incontinence. The psychological consequences for a patient that is immobile for a prolonged period of time may include depression, sensory deprivation from a lack of environmental stimulation, and, in some cases, deliriousness.
[0004] To avoid such complications, patients may undergo movement therapy, traditionally conducted with the aid of a physical therapist. In many cases, a physical therapist is required to help a patient complete movement therapy by assisting the lifting and lowering of a patient's limbs or moving portions of a patient's torso. In some cases, a physical therapist may also apply massage or other touch-related therapy to a patient in connection with or instead of other movement therapy, in any event, the work of a physical therapist can be physically strenuous. As a result, a physical therapist may be subject to occupational injury or decreased productivity if the work proves too taxing. In addition, the assistance provided by physical therapists may vary by the individual physical therapist, leading to confusion or displeasure on the part of the patient, SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a movement therapy system may include an overlay mattress with movable sections, panels or panes. In one embodiment, a movement therapy system may include an overlay mattress with inflatable chambers. In one embodiment, a movement therapy system may include therapy modules that may vibrate, massage, compress, warm, and/or cool in order to, for example, stimulate blood flow and/or movement in a portion of a patient's body. In one embodiment, a movement therapy system may include therapy slings, structured slings and/or enhanced therapy slings. The therapy slings, structured slings, and/or enhanced therapy slings may be used in connection with a lifting mechanism to move portions of a patient's body. Such movement may include raising and lowering portions of a patient's body. The structured slings may limit the amplitude, angles, acceleration, velocity, and/or speed of movement of a patient's body. The enhanced therapy slings may supply vibration, massage, compression, heat, and/or cold to a portion of a patient's body at the same time that the portion of the patient's body is being moved. In one embodiment, a movement therapy system may include a programmable means for controlling movements of one or more of the components of the movement therapy system. For example, a programmable controller may control the height, amplitude, speed, velocity, acceleration, number of repetitions, and/or sequencing of movements of one or more of the components of the movement therapy system.
[0006] Therefore, it can be appreciated that there is a significant need for a movement therapy system configured as an overlay mattress. It can further be appreciated that there is a significant need for a movement therapy system capable of moving portions of a patient's body. It can further be appreciated that there is a significant need for a movement therapy system that may vibrate, massage, compress, warm, and/or cool in order to, for example, stimulate blood flow and/or movement in a portion of a patient's body. It can further be appreciated that there is a significant need for a movement therapy system that may supply vi bration, massage, compression, heat, and/or cold to a portion of a patient's body at the same time that the portion of the patient's body is being moved by the movement therapy system. It can further be appreciated that there is a significant need for a movement therapy system that may include a programmable means for controlling movements of one or more of the components of the movement therapy system. Embodiments of the present invention can provide these and other advantages, as will be apparent from the following detailed description and accompanying figures,

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0026] In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a movement therapy system may include an overlay mattress with movable sections, panels or panes. In one embodiment, a movement therapy system may include slings, stmctured slings and/or therapy slings. The slings, stmctured slings, and/or therapy slings may be used in connection with a lifting mechanism to move portions of a patient's body. Such movement may include raising and lowering portions of a patient's body. The stmctured slings may limit the amplitude, angles, acceleration, velocity, and/or speed of movement of a patient's body. The therapy slings may supply vibration, massage, compression, heat, and/or cold to a portion of a patient's body at the same time that the portion of the patient's body is being moved.
[0027] Reference is now made to FIG. 1 which shows examples of movement therapy sequences that may be implemented in one embodiment of the present invention. Movement therapy may induce movement of various joints of a patient 100. For example, movement therapy may induce movement of a patient's neck 101, shoulders 103, elbows 104, wrists 105, hips 106, knees 107, ankles 108, and multiple points of a patient's spine 102. Movement therapy sequences may include raising and lowering the arms 109-1 10 and legs 111-1 1 of a patient in multiple positions and directions. Movement therapy sequences may include movement of a patient's torso 1 13-114.
[0028] Reference is now made to FIG. 2 which shows a perspective view of one embodiment of an overlay mattress 200 of the present invention. In this embodiment, the overlay mattress 200 is shown to be rectangular in shape and includes an upper surface 209. In other embodiments, the overlay mattress 200 may include of other shapes, sizes, and configurations capable of supporting a person such as, for example, a bed, mattress, pad, mat, cot, or stretcher. In one embodiment, the overlay mattress 200 may be configured to overlay the upper surface of a mattress. For example, the overlay mattress 200 may be placed on top of the mattress of a bed prior to use and removed from the top of the mattress of a bed after use. In one embodiment, the overlay mattress 200 may mount or attach to a bed to, for example, firmly position the overlay mattress 200 on the bed.
[0029] in this embodiment, the overlay mattress 200 is shown to be partitioned into eight different sections. For example, the overlay mattress 200 is shown to include a headrest section 201, a right-arm section 202, a torso section 203, a left-arm section 204, a right-leg section 205, a left-leg section 206, a right- foot section 207, and a left-foot section 208. In one embodiment, one or more of the sections may move. In one embodiment, one or more of the sections may move in sequence, in series or independently of one another. In other embodiments, the sections of the overlay mattress 200 may include other shapes, sizes, and configurations capable of moving such as, for example, panels, panes, plates or sheets. In one embodiment, one or more sections may be raised, recessed and/or framed within the upper surface of the overlay mattress 200.
[0030] In one embedment, the outer surfaces of the sections may rest in the same plane to create a single level surface to support a patient. It can be appreciated by one of ordinary skill in the art that the sections described herein as being a left or right section may function in connection with the limbs of a patient on the right or left side of a patient depending on whether the patient is prone or supine to the overlay mattress 200. In one embodiment, for example, the right-leg section 205 may move a patient's right leg when the patient is in a supine position with respect to the overlay mattress 200 but may move a patient's left leg when the patient is in a prone position with respect to the overlay mattress 200.
[0031] Reference is now made to FIG. 3 which shows a perspective view of one embodiment of an overlay mattress 200 of the present invention with subsurface movement. In this embodiment, various sections of the overlay mattress 200 have been raised and other sections are in a lowered position. For example, the headrest section 201, the right-arm section 202, the left-arm section 204, the left-leg section 206, and the right- foot section 207 have each been raised or elevated. On the other hand, the torso section 203, the right-leg section 205, and the left foot section 208 are in a lowered position. In this embodiment, the raised sections are shown to have rotated so that one end of each section has been raised higher than the other end of the section. For example, the distal end 300 of the right-foot section 207 may be raised but the proximal end 301 of the right- foot section 207 may remain lowered at the same level as the surface of the sections of the overlay mattress 200 that are in a lowered position. In this way, the upper surface of the right-foot section 207 may tilt as the right-foot section 207 is raised. The tilt of the right-foot section 207 may, for example, flex the right foot of a patient to stretch the patient's right calf muscle. In one embodiment, the angle and direction of tilt of one or more sections may be adjusted or varied.
[0032] In one embodiment, one or more sections may include a top that forms a portion of the upper surface 209 of the overlay mattress 200 when the section is in a lowered position. A section may also include multiple sides. In one embodiment, the multiple sides may only be exposed when a portion of the section is raised or elevated. For example, the left-leg section 206 may include a top 302, a front side 303, a left side 304, and a right side (not shown). [0033] In one embodiment, the height that one or more sections may be raised or lowered may be adjusted or varied. In one embodiment, the speed, velocity or acceleration that one or more sections may be moved may be adjusted or varied. In one embodiment, the overlay mattress 200 may be configured with a programmable controller that may control the height, amplitude, velocity, acceleration, tilt, number of repetitions, and/or sequencing of movements of one or more of the sections. In one embodiment, the overlay mattress 200 may include a user interface. The user interface may allow a caregiver and/or a patient to dictate various functions of the overlay mattress 200 such as the height, amplitude, velocity, acceleration, tilt, number of repetitions, and/or sequencing of movements of one or more of the sections. [0034] Reference is now made to FIG. 4 which shows a perspective view of one embodiment of an overlay mattress 200 of the present invention in use with a patient 400. In this embodiment, various sections of the overlay mattress 200 have been raised and other sections are in a lowered position. For example, the headrest section 201, the right-arm section 202, and the left-leg section 206 have each been raised. On the other hand, the torso section 203 (not shown), the left-arm section 204, the right-leg section 205, the left foot section 208, and the right-foot section 207 are in a lowered position. In this embodiment, the overlay mattress 200 is shown to be resting on the upper surface of a hospital-bed mattress 401. One end 401a of the hospital-bed mattress 401 has been raised. The overlay mattress 200 may be configured to overlay a mattress that may adjust into different configurations. In one embodiment, the overlay mattress 200 may be comprised of flexible materials that may- bend or may be folded.
[0035] In one embodiment, a spring 402 may move one or more sections of the overlay mattress 200.
