구동 상태에서 RC 영역을 투과한 신호와 LC 영역을 투과한 신호는 서로 상이한 편광 상태를 가질 수 있다.

편광 안경에 포함되는 편광자는, 3D 장치에 포함되는 편광판과 같이 소정 방향으로 형성된 흡수축과 상기 흡수축의 방향과는 수직하는 방향으로 투과축을 가지는 광학 소자일 수 있다.

예를 들면, 상기 위상차층으로는 중합성 액정 화합물을 중합시켜서 얻어질 수 있는 액정층, 일축 또는 이축 연신 등의 공정에 의해 위상차가 부여된 고분자 필름 또는 상기 액정층과 상기 고분자 필름의 적층 필름 등을 사용할 수 있다.
상기에서 액정층은, 예를 들면, 인접하는 배향층에 의해 배향된 상태로 중합되어 있는 중합성 액정 화합물을 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들면, 적절한 기재상에 배향층을 형성하고, 그 배향층상에 중합성 액정 화합물을 포함하는 액정 조성물을 코팅한 후에 배향 및 중합시키는 방식으로 상기 액정층을 형성할 수 있다. 상기에서 기재로는, 위상차가 없는 등방성의 기재를 사용하거나, 필요에 따라서는 적절한 파장 분산 특성의 구현을 위하여 적절한 위상차를 가지는 기재를 사용할 수 있다. 상기에서 배향층으로는, 이 분야에서 공지된 통상의 배향층으로서, 예를 들면, 직선 편광된 광의 조사에 의하여 유도되는 이성화(cis-trans isomerization), 프리즈 재배열(fries rearrangement) 또는 이량화(dimerization) 반응에 의하여 배향이 결정되고, 결정된 배향에 의하여 인접하는 액정층에 배향을 유도할 수 있는 광배향층, 러빙 처리된 폴리이미드층과 같은 고분자층 또는 복수의 홈 영역이 패터닝되어 형성되어 있는 아크릴 경화형 수지층 등이 예시될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 배향층상에 코팅되는 중합성 액정 화합물의 종류도 특별히 제한되지 않으며, 예를 들면, 머크(Merk)사의 RM(Reactive Mesogen) 또는 BASF사의 LC242 등과 같은 공지의 화합물을 사용할 수 있다.
또한, 상기에서 일축 또는 이축 연신에 의해 위상차를 부여한 고분자 필름으로는, 예를 들면, PMMA(poly(methyl methacrylate) 등의 아크릴 필름이나, PNB(polynorbornene) 등과 같은 COP(cycloolefin polymer) 필름 등이 예시될 수 있으나, 이에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
상기 위상차층은, 또한 상기와 같은 고분자 필름을 2장 이상 적층하거나, 하나 이상의 상기 액정층과 하나 이상의 상기 고분자 필름을 서로 적층하여 구성할 수도 있다.
본 출원은 또한 편광 안경, 예를 들면, 입체 영상을 관찰하기 위한 편광 안경에 대한 것이다.
상기 편광 안경은, 예를 들면, 영상 신호를 생성할 수 있는 표시부; 및 표시부에서 생성된 영상 신호를 서로 편광 상태가 상이한 2종 이상의 신호로 분할할 수 있는 제 1 및 제 2 영역을 포함하며, 상기 제 1 및 제 2 영역은 위상차층을 각각 가지는 필터부를 포함하고, 필요에 따라서 상기 표시부와 필터부의 사이에 제 1 편광판을 또한 포함하는 3D 장치로부터의 영상을 관찰하는 편광 안경일 수 있다. 하나의 예시에서 상기 3D 장치는, 본 명세서의 상기 항목에서 기술한 3D 장치일 수 있고, 이러한 경우, 이미 기술한 3D 장치 및 편광 안경에 대한 설명이 상기 편광 안경에 대한 부분에도 동일하게 적용될 수 있다.
하나의 예시에서 상기 편광 안경은, 상기 3D 장치의 항목에서 설명한 것과 같은 편광 안경일 수 있다. 따라서, 상기 편광 안경은, GR 영역 및 GL 영역을 포함하며, 상기 GR 및 GL 영역은, 위상차층 및 편광자를 각각 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 상기 편광 안경을 착용하고, 상기 3D 장치로부터의 영상을 관찰하는 경우의 크로스토크 비율, 명 상태 및 암 상태의 영상 신호의 CIE 색공간의 삼색 자극값의 X값 및 Y값은, 상기 3D 장치에서 기술한 것과 동일한 범위를 가질 수 있다.
상기를 위하여 상기 편광 안경의 GR 및 GL 영역의 편광자의 흡수축 및 위상차층의 광축의 필터부의 위상차층의 광축에 대한 관계는 상기 3D 장치의 항목에서 기술한 바와 같이 설정될 수 있다.
또한, 필요에 따라서 편광 안경의 위상차층 및 필터부의 위상차층은, N 특성, F 특성 또는 R 특성을 가질 수 있다. 이러한 경우에 상기 N, F 및 R 특성의 각각의 구체적인 내용이나 편광 안경의 위상차층과 필터부의 위상차층에서의 각 특성의 조합은 상기 3D 장치에서 기술한 내용이 동일하게 적용될 수 있다.
본 출원의 3D 장치 및 편광 안경에 의하면, 우수한 크로스토크 비율을 가지고 또한 색 특성이 우수한 입체 영상을 관찰할 수 있다.

이하, 실시예 및 비교예를 통하여 상기 3D 장치와 편광 안경을 상세히 설명하지만, 상기 장치와 안경의 범위가 하기의 실시예에 제한되는 것은 아니다.
이하 본 실시예에서 각 물성은 하기와 같은 방식으로 평가할 수 있다.
1. 위상차층의 위상차값
위상차층의 위상차값은 16개의 뮬러 매트릭스(Muller Matrix)를 측정할 수 있는 장비인 Axoscan(Axomatrics사제)을 사용하여 측정하였다. 구체적으로는, 상기 장비를 사용하여 제조사의 매뉴얼에 따라서 위상차층의 16개의 뮬러 매트릭스를 구하고, 이를 통해 위상차값을 추출하였다.
2. 크로스토크 비율의 평가 방법
3D 장치의 크로스토크 비율은, 하기 방식으로 측정할 수 있다. 우선 3D 장치의 통상의 관측 지점에 편광 안경을 위치시킨다. 상기에서 통상의 관측 지점은, 3D 장치의 중심으로부터 상기 3D 장치의 수평 방향의 길이의 3/2배에 해당하는 거리만큼 떨어진 지점이고, 이러한 위치에서 상기 안경은 관찰자가 3D 장치의 중심을 향하여 관찰하는 것을 가정하여, 위치시킨다. 상기 3D 장치의 수평 방향 길이는, 관찰자가 입체 영상을 관찰하는 상태를 가정할 때, 상기 관찰자를 기준으로 한 수평 방향의 길이, 예를 들면, 3D 장치의 가로의 길이일 수 있다. 상기 배치에서 3D 장치가 L 신호를 출력하도록 한 상태에서 편광 안경의 GL 및 GR 영역의 배면에 휘도계(장비명: SR-UL2 Spectrometer)를 배치하고, 각각의 경우의 휘도를 측정한다. 상기에서 GL 영역의 배면에서 측정되는 휘도는 명 상태의 휘도이며, GR 영역의 배면에서 측정되는 휘도는 암 상태의 휘도이다. 각 휘도를 측정한 후에, 명 상태의 휘도에 대한 암 상태의 휘도의 비율([암 상태의 휘도]/[명 상태의 휘도])을 구하여, 그 백분율을 크로스토크 비율로 규정할 수 있다. 또한, 크로스토크 비율은 상기와 동일한 방식으로 측정하되, 3D 장치가 R 신호를 출력하고 있는 상태에서 명 및 암 상태에서의 휘도를 구하여 측정할 수 있다. 이 경우, GL 영역의 배면에서 측정되는 휘도는 암 상태의 휘도이며, GR 영역의 배면에서 측정되는 휘도는 명 상태의 휘도이다. 동일하게 그 비율([암 상태의 휘도/명 상태의 휘도])의 백분율을 크로스토크 비율로 규정할 수 있다.
3. CIE 색공간의 X값 및 Y값의 측정
CIE 색공간의 X값 및 Y값은 하기의 방식으로 측정하였다. 3D 장치의 통상의 관측 지점에 편광 안경을 위치시킨다. 상기에서 통상의 관측 지점은, 크로스토크 비율의 측정 시에 기술한 지점과 같다. 상기 배치에서 3D 장치가 L 신호를 출력하도록 한 상태에서 편광 안경의 GL 및 GR 영역의 배면에 휘도계(장비명: SR-UL2 Spectrometer)를 배치시키고, 각 경우의 파장에 따른 스펙트럼을 측정한 후에 이를 기초로 X값 및 Y값을 도출할 수 있다. 상기에서 GL 영역의 배면에서 측정되는 스펙트럼으로부터 명 상태의 X값 및 Y값을 측정할 수 있으며, GR 영역의 배면에서 측정되는 스펙트럼으로부터 암 상태의 X값 및 Y값을 측정할 수 있다. 상기 X값 및 Y값은, 또한, 3D 장치가 R 신호를 출력하도록 한 상태에서 스펙트럼을 측정하여 구할 수도 있다. R 신호가 출력되는 경우에는, GL 영역의 배면에서 측정되는 스펙트럼으로부터 암 상태의 X값 및 Y값을 측정하며, GR 영역의 배면에서 측정되는 스펙트럼으로부터 명 상태의 X값 및 Y값을 구할 수 있다.
실시예 1 내지 9.
도 1에 나타난 바와 같은 구조를 가지되, 표시부(103)의 RS 및 LS 영역은 도 2와 같이 배치되고, 필터부(105)의 RC 영역과 LC 영역은 도 4와 같은 형태로 배치된 3D 장치(10)를 구성하였다. 상기 장치(10)에서 필터부의 RC 영역에는 제 1 편광판(104)의 흡수축과 반시계 방향으로 45도를 이루는 방향으로 지상축이 형성된 위상차층을 위치시키고, LC 영역에는 제 1 편광판(104)의 흡수축과 시계 방향으로 45도를 이루는 방향으로 지상축이 형성된 위상차층을 위치시켰다. 상기 장치(10)에서 제 1 편광판(104)의 흡수축은 장치(10)의 세로 방향과 수평을 이루도록 하고, 제 2 편광판(102)의 흡수축은 제 1 편광판(104)의 흡수축과 수직을 이루도록 하였다. 상기와 같은 3D 장치로부터 출사되는 영상을 도 7과 같이 GL 및 GR 영역을 포함하는 편광 안경을 착용하고 관찰하면서 크로스토크 비율 등을 평가하였다. 상기 편광 안경에서 각 편광자(702L, 702R)는, 각 흡수축이 서로 평행한 방향으로 형성되고, 또한 GL 영역의 중심과 GR 영역의 중심을 연결하는 가상의 선(도 8에 나타난 가상의 선(CL))이 3D 장치의 LC 및 RC 영역의 경계와 수직이 되도록 편광 안경을 위치시킨 경우에 제 1 편광판(104)의 흡수축과 GL 및 GR 영역의 편광자의 흡수축이 수직을 이루도록 배치하였다. 또한, GL 영역의 위상차층(701L)으로는, 편광 안경의 편광자의 흡수축과 제 1 편광판(104)의 흡수축이 수직을 이루도록 편광 안경을 배치한 경우에 LC 영역의 위상차층과 실질적으로 동일한 방향으로 광축이 형성된 위상차층을 사용하였고, GR 영역의 위상차층(701R)으로는, 편광 안경의 편광자의 흡수축과 제 1 편광판(104)의 흡수축이 수직을 이루도록 편광 안경을 배치한 경우에 RC 영역의 위상차층과 실질적으로 동일한 방향으로 광축이 형성된 위상차층을 사용하였다. 상기 3D 장치에서 LC 및 RC 영역의 위상차층과 GL 및 GR 영역의 위상차층의 종류를 하기 표 1과 같이 각각 변경하여 각각의 경우의 크로스토크 비율과 CIE 색공간에서의 X 및 Y값을 각각 측정하고, 그 결과를 하기 표 2에 기재하였다.

표 2의 결과로부터 알 수 있는 바와 같이, 필터부의 위상차층과 편광 안경의 위상차층의 파장 분산 특성을 조절함으로써, 입체 영상의 관찰 시에 크로스토크 비율과 명 및 암 상태에서의 색특성을 조절할 수 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
표 2의 결과에서는, 필터부의 위상차층과 편광 안경의 위상차층의 파장 분산 특성이 서로 동일하면 암 상태의 색특성의 개선에 유리하고, 반대로 상기 파장 분산 특성이 서로 상이하면 명 상태의 색특성의 개선에 유리한 것으로 나타났다. 특히 필터부의 위상차층과 편광 안경의 위상차층으로서 모두 R 특성의 위상차층을 사용하면, 크로스토크 비율, 명 및 암 상태에서의 색특성의 모든 측면에서 우수한 결과가 확인되었다.

Claims (20)

  1. 우안용 영역 및 좌안용 영역을 포함하고, 상기 우안용 및 좌안용 영역이 위상차층과 편광자를 각각 포함하는 편광 안경을 착용하고 영상을 관찰하는 입체 영상 표시 장치이고,
    영상 신호를 생성할 수 있는 표시부; 및 표시부에서 생성된 영상 신호를 서로 편광 상태가 상이한 2종 이상의 신호로 분할할 수 있는 제 1 및 제 2 영역을 포함하며, 상기 제 1 및 제 2 영역은 위상차층을 각각 가지는 필터부를 포함하고,
    상기 편광 안경을 착용하고 관찰하는 영상의 크로스토크 비율이 6% 이하이며, 명 상태의 영상 신호의 CIE 색공간의 삼색 자극값의 X값 및 Y값이 각각 0.322 내지 0.344 및 0.316 내지 0.350이고, 암 상태의 영상 신호의 CIE 색공간의 삼색 자극값의 X값 및 Y값이 각각 0.223 내지 0.443 및 0.078 내지 0.589인 입체 영상 표시 장치.
