Description

A PERSONAL VIDEO RECORDER
The present invention relates to a personal video recorder.
In personal video recorders, due to both the costly hard disks and the ability to store only limited data, the need for recording the image to be recorded in an external memory increases. The image data to be recorded into the external memory is required to be legally protected against copying. Furthermore, decoding and encoding operations are also applied to the image data. All these operations make it difficult to write the image data into the external memory. The state of the art embodiments to solve this problem require high processing power and memory and since they do not give precise results, they do not meet the needs of the user completely.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a personal video recorder which can record into the external memory in a fast and secure manner.
The personal video recorder realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises a control unit which provides the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded to be encrypted by means of an encryptor without applying any decoding and encoding operations and the encrypted TS packets to be recorded into the external memory.
The demux filter records the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded into the memory unit. After reading and encrypting the TS packets recorded in the memory unit, the encryptor records the encrypted TS packets into the memory unit. The portable media driver reads the encrypted TS packets recorded in the memory unit and records them into the external memory.
In an embodiment of the present invention, TS packets containing voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded are recorded into and read from a dedicated first memory area in the memory unit by the demux filter, encryptor and portable media driver simultaneously.
The personal video recorder of the present invention is suitable for being used as a television or receiver.
By means of the present invention, the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded are recorded into the external memory without applying any decoding and encoding operations.
The personal video recorder of the present invention records the images in the broadcast signals, multangular images in 3D broadcasts, voices (the voice data containing more than one language, music etc. for the same channel), subtitles (can be in multiple languages), channel/broadcast data packets (teletext, electronic program guide etc.) that belong to the channel to be recorded into the external memory as TS packets and can play the recorded TS packets.
The personal video recorder realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figure, where:

K1: The channel to be recorded
K2: The channel to be watched
Pr: The TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1)
Pe: The encrypted TS packets
Pw: The TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be watched (K2)
F1: A first memory area dedicated for recording the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr)
F2: A second memory area dedicated for recording the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be watched (K1) (Pw)
The personal video recorder (1) of the present invention comprises a receiver (2) which receives the digital broadcast signals, a demodulator (3) which converts the broadcast signals received from the receiver (2) into TS (transport stream) packets, a demux filter (4) which selects the TS packets received from the demodulator (3), a memory unit (5), a decoder (6) which decodes the TS packets into voice and image signals, an encryptor (7), an output means (8) to which the voice and image signals received from the decoder (6) are directed, a portable media driver (9) which records the broadcast signals into an external memory according to the preferences of the user and a control unit (10) (Figure 1).
When the user desires to record a channel (K1) from the digital broadcast signals received by the receiver (2), the control unit (10) provides the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr) to be encrypted by means of the encryptor (7) without applying any decoding and encoding operations and the encrypted TS packets (Pe) to be recorded into the external memory.
When the user desires to record a channel (K1) from the digital broadcast signals reaching the personal video recorder (1) and received by the receiver (2), he/she transmits the data of channel to be recorded (K1) to the control unit (10) by means of an interface (not shown in the figure). The data of channel to be recorded (K1) is transmitted to the demux filter (4) by means of the control unit (10). The demux filter (4) rules out the incoming TS packets according to their headers and records the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr) into the memory unit (5). After reading and encrypting the TS packets (Pr) recorded in the memory unit (5), the encryptor (7) records the encrypted TS packets (Pe) into the memory unit (5). The portable media driver (9) reads the encrypted TS packets (Pe) recorded in the memory unit (5) and records them into the external memory.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the broadcast signals received by the personal video recorder (1) are in DVB format.
Since the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) are recorded as TS packets, no decoding and encoding operation is applied. Thus, losses occurring in accordance with the decoding and encoding operations are eliminated and the broadcast signals can be recorded into the external memory quickly immediately after passing through the demux filter (4).
When the images recorded in the external memory are desired to be watched, the encrypted TS packets (Pe) read from the external memory by means of the portable media driver (9) are decrypted by the encryptor (7) and recorded into the memory unit (5). The TS packets (Pr) recorded in the memory unit (5) are read by the decoder (6) and converted to a suitable format in order to be supplied to the output means (8).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the encrypted TS packets (Pe) recorded in the external memory and containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) can only be watched in the personal video recorder (1) wherein the recording operation is performed.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the memory unit (5) comprises a first memory area dedicated for recording the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr) (F1). The TS packets that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr)are recorded successively one after the other into the first memory area (F1) by means of the demux filter (4). Simultaneously, the encryptor (7) receives the TS packets that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr) from the first memory area (F1) and after encrypting them, writes the encrypted TS packets (Pe) again into the first memory field (F1) successively. Simultaneously with the demux filter (4) and the encryptor (7), the portable media driver (9) receives the encrypted TS packets (Pe) from the first memory area (F1) and records them into the external memory. The operations of reading the voice and image signals, which belong to the channel to be recorded (K1), by the demux filter (4), encryptor (7) and portable media driver (9) simultaneously from the first memory area (F1) and recording them are directed by means of the control unit (10).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the memory unit (5) is a RAM (Random Access Memory).
In another embodiment of the present invention, the personal video recorder (1) is a digital television.
In a variation of this embodiment, when a selection of the channel to be watched (K2) is transmitted to the control unit (10) by the user by means of an interface (not shown in the figure), the data of channel to be watched (K2) is transmitted to the demux filter (4) by means of the control unit (10). The demux filter (4) rules out the incoming TS packets according to their headers and records the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr) and the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be watched (K2) (Pw) into the memory unit (5). The TS packets (Pw) which are recorded in the memory unit (5) and which belong to the channel to be watched (K2) are read by the decoder (6) and converted to a suitable format in order to be supplied to the output means (8).
In a variation of this embodiment, the memory unit (5) comprises a second memory area (F2) which is different than the first memory area dedicated for recording the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr) (F1), and wherein the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be watched (K2) (Pw) are recorded.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the personal video recorder (1) is a set-top-box.
In the personal video recorder (1) of the present invention, since the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) are recorded by means of the control unit (10) without changing the TS packet that is the format of the broadcasted signals, a hard disk is not required and hence, they are recorded into the external memory. No decoding and encoding operation is applied to the TS packets containing the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) (Pr). Since the voice and image signals that belong to the channel to be recorded (K1) are read and recorded simultaneously by the demux filter (4), the encryptor (7) and the portable media driver (9), the capacity in the memory unit (5) needed for the recording operation is reduced.
It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited by the embodiments disclosed above and a person skilled in the art can easily introduce different embodiments. These should be considered within the scope of the protection postulated by the claims of the present invention.
