Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a device for operating a gas discharge lamp 1. The gas discharge lamp 1 is operated with an alternating voltage, and a DC component of the current flowing through the gas discharge lamp 1 can be adjusted. For this purpose, a direct or indirect measurement of the DC component is carried out, and the DC component is changed on the basis of the measurement. The change of the DC component can be implemented by adjusting the amplitude and/or the polarity of an asymmetry of duty cycles d1, d2 of two digital control signals 2a, 2b for two inverter 3 semiconductor circuit breakers 3a, 3b that are connected to a half bridge in series, said inverter supplying the gas discharge lamp 1 with alternating voltage. The DC component can be changed dependent on the set dimming level, the lamp type, the ambient temperature, or other operating parameters, or the DC component can be adjusted to a reference value. The reference value can be determined from a reference curve and can be adjusted on the basis of one or more curve sets that describe the DC component at least dependent on the dimming level and the amplitude and/or polarity of the asymmetry.
